Bar TartineTry as many things as possibleBar Tartine makes a fascinating array of stuff for a small restaurant, including the best bread in the city, its own pickled and dried ingredients, house-made sodas, and on and on. We had 6 different items at this meal and the best single bite was a curried carrot, served as one ingredient on a small piece of rye bread (smorebrot). You don't know what's going to be most delicious so try as many tastes as you can.6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMPotato Flatbread was YummyFour of us went for Sunday brunch and shared. The poached eggs served on top of broccoli and lamb sausage on a biscuit got mixed reviews. The eggs were poached perfectly. One thought that the broccoli was cooked well and one thought that the broccoli was too crunchy. One liked the lamb sausage but one did not. No one liked the biscuit. One of us had the potato flatbread with cheese and one had the potato flatbread with cheese and fried eggs. Everyone agreed that both were yummy. We'd order this again. The coffee was good. The portions were large and the price was reasonable for the quality and amount of food. I don't see this as a destination place coming from the East Bay but if I were in the area I'd definitely return.6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMBar Tartine is always a favorite!Bar Tartine is always a favorite! In addition to the stellar food they have a fabulous beer list and the servers are quite knowledgeable about beer and food pairings.6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful experienceThe menu is not extensive, but all the items we chose were cooked with care and it showed. The service could not have been better and we left with that warm glow asoociated with the best restaurants.6/6/2013 12:00:00 AMPushing the Edge in a Good Way!I've been to Bar Tartine many times now, and I swear the whole thing is getting better and better. One thing I'm appreciating is how the menu changes often with the seasons- the food is incredibly high quality and the preparations are functional, creative and work outstandingly well. Tartine isn't afraid to push the edge and get you out of a comfort zone and get you into a new and refreshing exploration.
I brought a first-timer, and she was stunned and blown away by the multi-dimensional expertise of the presentation. That why I brought her there, and enjoy turning my friends on to this rare gem.6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMBar TartineWe shared small plates and two entrees among three people, thereby sampling much of the menu. The food was creative, delicious, but extremely rich--despite small portions given the fact we split everything three ways, one felt quite overfull quite quickly. We also filled up on the bread which was as expected sublime. The poundcake desert was disappointing--rhubarb jam much better than the cake itself.
I cannot fault the food, or the service--but I have to say that this is not the way I prefer to eat--too much cream, yogurt sauces, too rich for my taste.6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMi want to try everything on menu.creative, complex, fresh. can't wait for the cookbook to come out.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMIt's in the details ...Went with a friend and had a flatbread to start and we each had one of their sandwiches. The food is awesome! I felt fat and satisfied and the drink menu was real nice. Living in the bay, there's so much good food, that it can be hard to get too excited about one meal, but I had high expectations and was still quite impressed by the quality of the ingredients, the menu and the aesthetic.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMgood, not great food, noisy, good, not great food, noisy, tables very close together. Worth return.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMVery creative with simple foodWhat they do with simple food is amazing. Potatoes with garlic, Roasted chicken... everything starts with very basic ingredients, but the complexity they achieve is impressive.
I'm not a fan of pickled food, so I will avoid that next time. I have it a try but it wasn't for me.
I will definitely go back!6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent food nicely presented.Excellent food nicely presented. Efficient and knowledgeable service. Exceeded our expectations.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of a kind menuIt takes a chef with confidence to offer a total menu with combinations and flavors off the grid - including the wine. We enjoyed a kale salad with amazing yogurt made in-house , excellent perogies with tasty red cabbage, and a wine from Slovenia. Although we tried 4 plates, I regret these didn't include the picked dishes. I think the real question for me is if I like this kind of food - and it could take another trip to Bar Tartine to help me decide.5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMLived up to the buzzI'd read about Bar Tartine for a while, but not found myself in the Mission for dinner until ACT staged "Black Watch" in the Armory. The food included a number of tricky preparations, such as a cucumber sauce with a cold salmon appetizer and smoked potatoes with raps aioli. For our mains, we had "cheese dumplings" and spaetzle served with an egg-based sauce. Everything was excellent and satisfying. Dessert of pound cake with fresh berries topped with a tangy creme was honestly the best strawberry shortcake I've ever had. Our server was careful to make sure that we got out of the restaurant in time for the 8pm curtain. I'm looking forward to dining at Bar Tartine again, perhaps for lunch of a sandwich on their delicious bread.5/21/2013 12:00:00 AMPerfect experience!Loved this restaurant, amazing exciting food - very good service and wonderful atmosphere! Can't wait to return!5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMInteresting and tasty foodBar Tartine is a gem. The food is not the usual California Cuisine. It borrows from central European flavors and styles. The roasted potatoes were fabulous, as was the Fisherman's Stew. We liked the Kale, but wondered if it was our favorite way to eat Kale - so many options. And don't forget the bread - in a city with many choices, the best in my opinion. Service was very friendly. Can't wait to go back.5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMInnovative and NourishingLove the mason jar presentation of pickled vegetables - curried cauliflower was our favorite. Enjoyed the horseradish with asparagus, especially b/c the horseradish didn't destroy our tastebuds. Moved on to share the amazing roasted kale w/innovative dehydrated yogurt (!) crumbs and other goodies - I need to figure out how to make this at home. Salmon presentation was beautiful and the spaeztle was hearty without being overfilling, all delicious. Was expecting more of a Tartine Bakery dessert so ended up skipping that. Great friendly service.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful meal - truly specialThe menu is varied and a refreshing view on "vegetarian-friendly" (they happily opt out of injecting dishes with pseudo-meats), with dishes that celebrate kale, tahini, and cheeses. The service was spectacular and honest (when the desert menu came and we nervously whispered to one another that we'd prefer just popping over to Bi-Rite Creamery, our waitress - unable to help overhearing - supported our decision and noted that she would do the same) and the ambiance was lively without being deafening.5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent food! The ChineseExcellent food! The Chinese chicken salad sandwich is a must...4/28/2013 12:00:00 AMAmazing food, needs affordable wineBar Tartine is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. The menu is mostly made up of small plates that are very interesting and delicious and remarkably reasonably priced for the quality and ambiance. I particularly love the potato flatbread and smoked potatoes. The one disappointment is the wine list is really overpriced compared to the menu. The least expensive bottle of red is about $50 and is not very good. If the wine list had a couple of bottles in the $30 range, I would eagerly return to Bar Tartine many more times. Otherwise, it's a drag to feel like I cannot get wine I can enjoy for a price that fits the bill.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMLovely! My husband and I visited Bar Tartine while in San Fran on our honeymoon. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The food was incredible. Delicate flavors, well balanced, beautifully presented. We were so full after dinner that we could not order dessert. However, the waiter brought us two complementary glasses of sparking wine to celebrate our marriage. Friendly, delicious, and pleasing to every sense. If this restaurant is on your list, we highly recommend you try it.4/24/2013 12:00:00 AMI was eating dinner with aI was eating dinner with a friend from out of town and my sister, so I wanted a restaurant that was cozy and intimate. Luckily I was able to snag a reservation!
The descriptions on the menu never do justice for the food that comes out of the kitchen at Bar Tartine. Just delicious.4/23/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent brunch spotExcellent food, fresh ingredients and innovative preparation.
Highly recommend for brunch.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMI absolutely LOVE this place!I absolutely LOVE this place! The food was amazing, the service outstanding, the best beer I've ever tasted, even the valet parking person was a joy to deal with. My entire experience at Bar Tartine was exceptional. I would definitely be back. I highly recommend this place!4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMWow!!! Amazing!!!This place is awesome! I went for brunch and I was not blown away at all of the options on the menu but I quickly changed my tune! Even if you don't like whats on this menu you will love this place. I had the strawberry flatbread and the potato flatbread with the fried egg on top!! AMAZING!!!! We also had the reuben.....fantastic! Everything that came out of the kitchen looked amazing. Service was great too!! Go to this place you will not be disappointed!!!4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMAs always, Tartine did notAs always, Tartine did not fail to perform for this evening's feast, a seven course extravaganza that left us breathless! It was my first time for the marrow/asparagus half sandwich, which was truly outstanding. The tripe dish that I had for the main was one of the best things I've ever tasted. Tartine scores very high on all esoteric scales, and for me once I experienced the quality of what goes on here at every level, other places in SF seem very shallow and low quality.
Thanks for another great evening!4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMFoodies dreamWe ate at Bar tartine as part of a west coast food finding expedition. The food was unlike any we have eaten in a long time (we are in the business-have two restaurants on the east coast.) The menu at a glance seemed simple enough, the execution blew us away. Cannot say enough about the food ~the server was informed, unpretentious and truly excited about what Tartine had to offer. A highlight of our trip which began in Portland Oregon.4/16/2013 12:00:00 AMLifestyle BloggerBest restaurant I've tried in San Francisco. The menu is simple but the flavors are complex and unexpected. Staff was very knowledgeable and contributed to the atmosphere and overall dining experience.4/15/2013 12:00:00 AMHelen our server made someHelen our server made some excellent recommendations. The food was delicious.4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMthankfully beyond the flatthankfully beyond the flat suburbian americana that most farm-to-table, well-sourced restaurants have become. we both have int'l backgrounds and very much appreciated the draw of ingredients and compositions beyond europe. we just wish we tried some of the fermented drinks (guava? + whey soda).4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMUnforgettably deliciousFor brunch, two of us ordered the Reuben sandwich and two ordered the potato flat bread with fried egg, garlic and cheese. The Reuben was surprisingly spicy and good, but the potato flat bread was sublime. The lucky two who ordered this tasty treat moaned in gastronomic delight while simultaneously fighting off the forks of the two who didn't. We will be going back soon to order four potato flat breads with fried egg, garlic and cheese.4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMOInnovative, delicious food at a great price. Excellent and low key service.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMVery good meal held a fewVery good meal held a few nice and different surprises.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMGood sandwichesI came here for a fast sandwich as I was nearby. The service was very nice and fast and the food was great. They have an iced tea with ginger that is really good.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMI was a little skeptical aboutI was a little skeptical about the eastern European cuisine, but was delighted by the various dishes we tried. Everything was incredibly flavorful and fresh.
Portion sizes are modest (even the entree portions). Between the two of us we split 2 small plates and 2 entrees and that was the perfect amount of food (for those with smaller appetites probably 2 + 1 would be fine). I wish they had more CA wines in their selection, as the Croatian wines were just so-so and it made it difficult to chose a wine to accompany the meal.4/11/2013 12:00:00 AMBar Tartine is such a phenomenalBar Tartine is such a phenomenal place to eat. The dishes are made with so much creativity. The food looks and tastes amazing!4/9/2013 12:00:00 AMAlways GreatAnother great meal here. Get to try new things each time. Best to go w group and order family style so can try as many things as possible. Had smoked potato, fishermans stew, chopped salad, blood sausage and carrot pickles. More than enough for 2 as most things quite rich.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMMy mom was in town and I tookMy mom was in town and I took her here for lunch for her birthday. It was great! We shared the little gems salad, dill pickled carrots & turnips and the goat cheese sandwich...all highly recommended. It was a wonderful atmosphere and the wait staff was extremely friendly. Overall an awesome experience!4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMThis is an excellent restaurant. This is an excellent restaurant. Great service, menu fit for foodies. Really interesting food combinations. And just a really welcoming vibe. Awesome bread served too4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMGood times, good foodI've recently been exploring SF restaurants and this is my favorite so far. Its interior is warm and yet spacious, the servers are casual yet attentive, the food is flat out amazing. We were all impressed with the blend of flavors -- we enjoyed every bite. The only criticism I can come up with was the wine list was short and way too expensive. We stuck with beer. I would come back to this restaurant, which is not something I say lightly because I know the many I haven't tried still are waiting to be tried! The Mission District has come alive for the evening, so stroll down Valencia further & catch an after-dinner drink at a local bar. It's happenin'!4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMService and food were exceptional.Service and food were exceptional. While I wouldn't say the restaurant was kid friendly, everyone was incredibly accommodating with regard to our sleeping baby in carseat.4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMHungarianoid CuisineThis spot in the Mission Dolores area is buzzing and energetic. The smoked potatoes were unique and delicious as was the house-baked bread. Other dishes (e.g. blood sausage) were well-done, but not exceptional. A pleasant experience and a nice spot for a casual meal.4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMIf you're looking for greatIf you're looking for great Eastern European fare to be shared with the whole table for a very intimate food sharing experience - family style... this is the spot!! Very simple place with no photos but definitely adds to the ambience. The details are in the food & ingredients.3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMThis modern interpretationThis modern interpretation of Central European food never fails. Super-delicious dishes like chicken paprikas and - yum! - spatzle. The best spatzle ever - even better than my mom's. Unusual wines served by knowledgeable servers. It's not cozy, but it's great.3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat place. Great food.Great place. Great food. Great people. Definitely worth the time and cost.3/27/2013 12:00:00 AMExceptional Quality, AlwaysThe food is exceptional at Bar Tartine, starting with their phenomenal bread and ending with their innovative deserts. You must try their homemade pickles -- the beets with buttermilk dressing were delicious. If the carob mousse is on the menu---don't pass it up. What shines thru in all the dishes here is the purity of the ingredients and the attention to detail.3/25/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful food and service!Wonderful food and service! The bread - from Tartine Bakery - is delightful. The lamb meatballs were divine. The roasted kale with yogurt was the highlight of the evening. Enjoy!3/24/2013 12:00:00 AMA Roaring SuccessReally a lovely experience from top to bottom. The service was excellent, The food was delicious, creative and of the highest quality, AND, importantly, the price is extremely reasonable given the previous and as compared to comparable spots. Go and enjoy!3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMBuy a ticket, take the ride! For a rather unpretentious appearing restaurant, the brunch food was extraordinarily good, the prices reasonable, the ambiance and service very pleasant, all in all a really exceptional meal. The bakery's breads anchor the flavors in many of the brunch dishes, the Danish rye being especially delicious. Highly recommended.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMFirst Visit, not the LastThis was a first visit - another couple and I were intrigued by the description of the menu being Eastern European. They had lived in Hungary for several years and were eager to try it. Finding the restaurant was challenging as parking is difficult (as you know), and there was NO sign in front. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, not pretentious - liked the walnut tables! My first reaction in looking at the menu was that nothing looked familiar, ingredients were strange, and I even suggested we might want to go somewhere else. Our waiter was more than helpful, though, and explained the order things were listed in, how dishes were served, and that plates were shared with all at the table. We took a chance and were so glad we did. Delicious!3/17/2013 12:00:00 AMThe trio of open faced sandwichesThe trio of open faced sandwiches at Sunday brunch was so good I groaned!3/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
