A word from Bar Gitano
Bar Gitano, a Spanish Tasca located in the Condado beach district in the heart of San Juan, is the latest project from Chef Roberto Treviño and business partner Francisco De Juan of Out of this World Restaurants.

With its ample bar, al fresco Terrace and magnificent dining room, the duo created a space that seems plucked out of a traditional Spanish city. Its rustic décor of brick, wood and artwork depicting castanets and bullfighters lends a truth of Spanish culture.

The menu consists of 21 authentic & original Spanish tapas, an assortment of Spanish cheeses & cold cuts, Cocas, which are small pizzetas, all accented by a variety of Paellas.

  • "Seems like a good place to chill and have a drink.... The ambience was nice. The food was not that great. We left after a few bites of 4 or 5 fairly yucky tasting tapas and went to Red Coral Lounge at the Marriott (we are not big eaters but could not even finish the tapas so we were still hungry). Red coral lounge has a cool vibe and the food was MUCH BETTER!!"

  • "In town for only two days, were looking for different local eats . Tapas was a great idea for lunch. The white sangria was very enjoyable. We ordered three tapas. I recommend the shrimp and noodles. I do recommend this place, especially for lunch on a Sunday. I look forward to returning. Worth the money and not cheap."

  • "We were a party of 10 people and will really appreciate if you can congratulate all the staff, specially the manager Zayvette and the waitress that unfortunately I don’t remember the name. They were all wonderful, the service was A+ and the food was incredible. The waitress was really great and very attentive, she even gave my mother a dessert for her birthday. I am so proud to see great puertorrican people work as great as they did. We are really looking forward to visit the restaurant again. Thanks and keep up the great work"

  • "Our requested outdoor table was not ready when we arrived. We sat at the bar and had a couple of drinks. Once seated we ordered 4 different appetizers. The Chorizo, patatas bravas, and pinchos pollo were all delivered at once and were quite tasty. After we finished all that it took quite a while to locate our server and ask about our short ribs (Costillas de Cerdo). She said they should be right out. A good 10 minutes later they showed up and were pretty much uneatable. Half fat and half gristle. While waiting for our food no less than 3 times did servers bring us dishes we didn't order. We told our waitress about the ribs and she basically said-that's unusual, they're usually tender. That's it-end of story."

  • "Although reservations were available trough Open Table and tables were available. This restaurant didn't accepted our reservation because they had reservations made trough telephone. They should be removed from Open Table since making reservations this way are not taken into consideration. Poor customer service. I am not going back. I visited Bar Gitano many times in the past and they lost a customer and his friends as clients. Nice way to do bussines in todays economy..."

  • "Avoiding paella because of some negative reviews, we went to Bar Gitano specifically for the tapas. That was a good move. A lot of interesting selections to choose from. The key is choosing well. Unfortunately preparations are not really described so we ended up with several fried heavier items than we intended. While they were all good, nothing really stood out. Very good service should be noted, although I had bad luck with wines in Condado (different restaurants two nights in a row were out of my first selection). Nice outdoor seating on busy Ashford Avenue - get there early or you'll have to wait at the bar for an outside table."

  • "The first thing to remember is that this is first, a bar, and secondly, a bar that serves food. This is not a restaurant with a bar. On a positive note, the tapas at this bar are very good and the staff is very friendly and very helpful in helping you to pick the tapas you might be interested in eating. The place was bit too noisy for me but I would not rule out a return visit knowing what I know now."

  • "Everything we had was very good. We sampled many of the small plates and shared 2 of the larger plates. The pulpo was quite good and better than any I've had. Tender and prepared nicely. The atmosphere is a little off; not what I was expecting and dining al fresco is really just sitting outside looking at a busy street. Go for the food, the drinks and the company your with and don't worry so much about the atmoshere and ambience. You'll enjoy it."

  • "We visited twice during our stay. First night was a group of 18 and second time a group of 8. Food was exceptional both times. Preferred the meat paella to the seafood version, but fish tacos, coconut shrimp, grilled octopus, sautéed mushrooms, jerk chicken skewers, and chorizo were all outstanding!! First night, reservation was for 12 and as more people joined us, they were able to accommodate. They also have a nicely stocked bar and the servers were great! Location right accross from Marriott hotel was a bonus!"

  • "Bar Gitano is a bonafide tapas event. The place was semi-busy, but not so busy that the service should have been slow....it was. But once we finally got our food and beverage ordered, the food was delivered pronto. The Sangria (red) was good and not too sweet. Everything was great, especially the potatoes . (I think they were called Papas Bravas). Our server said the paella was the most popular dish but we did not have that. It was very LOUD the night we dined inside, so if you want to talk to your dining partner, you'll probably have to do it before or after or ask for an outside table. But if you just want to eat and drink with occasional exclamations of delight, go for it. If you map it, be careful; call to confirm location."

  • "We stayed over in San Juan after a cruise and went to Bar Gitano after seeing the chef on the Food Network. The paella was featured. We started with several tapas, which were quite good. The chorizo, pulpo, and potatoes were specially good. We shared the seafood paella but were disappointed to find 3 shrimp(skimpy and hard to split in 2) a piece of chorizo and several tiny overdone mussels. No scallops, no squid, no pulpo- all of which I would expect in a seafood paella in a restaurant that features most of those items on the menu. Also a very small portion for $34. No reason to go back."

  • "Across from the Marriott in the Condado area, we timed our reservation to have dinner prior to the 9pm flamenco performance on Thursday. The dancer, singer, musicians all talented! Enjoyed a variety of tapas, and attentive service. If you are staying at the Renaissance or Condado Plaza Hilton on Ashford Ave, this is walkable (albeit breezy, no full skirts!!). Memorable evening."

  • "My wife and I had dinner at Bar Gitano while staying at the La Concha resort in Condado. We ordered several of the tapas and they were all good. The service was quick and friendly. We ate outside, but there are some downsides to that: smoking is allowed on the patio and the people at the table next to ours smoked a lot. Also, the trash collection point is right in front of the patio. While we were eating theile of trash grew. Some from the Bar Giatno, some from other places that placed the trash there. Not a good experience. Inside may be a better option, but it was quite cold inside."

The tourist crowd brings down the average in the dress code department... Parking is a hassle and there was no valet (although the profile said so...). If you can avoid driving, I highly recommend Bar Gitano."

  • "Right across the street from our hotel! Convenient location close to many hotels on Ashford in Condado. The tapas were excellent, and our group of 6 all agreed that the sangria was the best. We finished the night with paella. Our waitress provided timely service which can be tricky when serving tapas. She was constantly checking back to make sure we had what we needed and were enjoying our food. Our water glasses were never empty. We were there on a Saturday night, and it was packed. Make a reservation."

  • "Third time here. Made res. in advance w/Jennifer who ended up being our wonderful server. She was super--explained food choices and questions, & was very attentive. Our food experience was great as usual. The papas bravas were our favorite--spicy sauce over perfect, soft, tasty potatoes. Also loved the sausage in thick sherry sauce. Much of the fun of a tapas restaurant is in the tasting of many different things and passing the plates around, which we did, a lot. We were able to talk to one another without any problem--seated in the back, along the banquette. They also arranged a special low-cal dish for one of our diners. Service was great, food was great...what else can you ask for? Will definitely return; an easy choice!"

  • "Looking for a local Tapas bar, we found Bar Gitano. Ambience was good....liked the décor. Service was good, but was very disappointed in the food. We ordered paella, and while the dish was ok, the sausage was so overcooked it tasted like ash. The dessert seemed like is was nuked too long in a microwave. Not a bad place to catch a drink, but wouldn't recommend the food."

However, me and my wife felt that it was advertised and marketed as a very upscale, chic restaurant more along the lines of a four to five star when instead it really was more of a nice neighborhood spot more reminiscent of a Chicago Lakeview or Wicker Park "style" restaurant to eat at prior to going to many of the bars or clubs in the area. Location is great relative to the night life in San Juan."

  • "All I can say is Wow!!! Our waiter Ronnie was the best, all the food he recommended was right on! You must try the potatoes (patatas bravas) and the meat Paella, they were superb!!! I had the bread with tomato and Serrano ham and I also had the red wine sangria, just amazing . I had the date tart for dessert and I loved it. The atmosphere is really good. My party and I arrived around. 7:30 and its was quiet and intimate , then it started getting crowded , at 9 pm they have live flamenco music and dancers as well as a belly dancer, very fun!! We can't wait to go back!"

The bar scene was exactly what I was looking for. People in my age range, very good looking and fashionable. I even met a movie/TV star while I was there! It was an amazing night.   • "we were in town for a bachelorette and were all craving some fun and shareable cuisine. there were a couple foodies in the bunch and a vegetarian and everyone had plenty to choose from. our waiter suggested amazing bottles of wine that were right in our "not too expensive" price range and we each took turns ordering tapas and everyone of them was extremely tasty. we all recommended this restaurant to other guests we met at our resort - so if you are in the area definitely check it out. we were only disappointed when we found out the flamenco dancers were not scheduled for that night."
