Diner Reviews
  • "We ordered everything from olives to short ribs. Everything was nicely plated, temps were perfect. Timing between dishes was very well timed. Waitress was friendly and answered many of our questions with ease. Outdoors was nice, the weather was beautiful, but being next to another restaurant and sharing the outdoor area it was quite loud at times, also a lot of random people walking thru the area with pets and such, seemed a little odd. Other than that a very nice night, and menu choices. We will go back."

  • "We had a nice dinner at Bar Ferdinand. The food was a bit over oiled. So it felt a bit heavy in the stomach later in the night. Our server was super friendly, but slow. Our tapas came out one dish at a time over 1 1/2 hours. Our server was very descriptive of what dish was being dropped off, but another server stepped in to help her and dropped our cheese plate off without telling us anything about the plate. The wine was fantastic. I don't know that I would go back. But it was a pleasant evening."

  • "Unattentive, random service and got seated much later than our reservation. Took away from enjoying the decent food."

  • "Bar F's got the tapas scene right - excellent food, fair prices, attentive service that's not rushed despite the frenzy all around. It feels right, too. Great crudo, fine paella, robust chorizo, hot & smoky peppers etc plus OK sangria, a fine list of Spanish wines & a few good & well priced sherries (the $8/gl manzanilla was excellent). Even with empty tables, it's rather loud if you want to communicate with anyone at your table (at least at 9 on a Saturday nite). But this all feels like any of the nicer tapas bars & restaurants in Spain & around the world (Tapas Brindisa, London; Cinco Jotas, Madrid). It's not Albora or Estado Puro, but it doesn't pretend to be & it's a lot less expensive. If you can't enjoy yourself here, you're a grinch."

  • "I always enjoy the food at Bar Ferdinand - everything is very well prepared and delicious. However, at this most recent visit it was nearly impossible for our group of 4 to have a conversation due to the incredible noise level. The baseline problem of crowd noise is compounded by the music being too loud. Our waitress was nice, but it was nearly impossible to hear anything that she was saying to us. I'd go back for the food, but I think I'll wait until warmer weather and outdoor seating so that I can hear my companions."

  • "We got a selection of tapas and they were good but for the size a bit pricy. It was a nice, if expensive, experience and definitely worth trying."

  • "Excellent food and drinks, service was outstanding. Noise was overwhleming at times making conversation a little challenging. The pan catalan was an interesting interpretation."

  • "We had to wait over half of an hour from our reservation timebefore being seated. The noise level was so incrediably loud, we could not hear our waitress or each other. We ordered several small plates, one of which never arrived. The food was decent, but certainly not worth the wait, or noise level."

  • "Price was good. Food was great. There's almost nothing more to say but if you need more. We went during the weekend on a date. The scene was upbeat but not too much. Music at a normal level to still hold a conversation. Our server was very knowledgable. They were attentive but not overwhelming. Every dish we ordered was full of flavor and good portions for tapas. If you are into trying something new this is the spot. You'll enjoy evey moment...we did."

  • "Definitely expensive, but always an amazing place to eat. If you want to taste many different foods and share them with a group, this is the place to go. Also, the wine selection is fantastic. Great "special occasion" restaurant for me."

  • "Not much to say, really. Great tastes overall, some some over salting. Nice ambiance. But by the time the place got 3/4 full the noise level became painfully loud. Everyone had to shout in order to converse. Won't return for that very reason: Why try to have a lovely and intriguing menu, well executed, when you and your guests cannot even talk."

  • "Loved the variety of dishes and options on the menu. Tostas were delicious. We sat and ate at the bar. Service was great. Atmosphere was lively, definitely a trendy/hipster vibe, but still a fairly diverse group of diners."

  • "We had the Valentine's Day price fixe. Scallop, mushrooms, frisée salad then the awesome paella. Almond cake was lovely, the chocolate torte a little tired. Overall including the great cocktails—a delicious dinner. We enjoyed this restaurant, a happy, exuberant place."

  • "Went for brunch on a Sunday. Great menu, and very reasonable. Service was very good as well. Street parking was no problem. They have music on the first Friday of the month-will have to go back then."

  • "We did the chef's tasting with the wine pairing. It was ok. Half the courses were good and half were absolutely not good. I have been there many times and always loved everything that I ordered. I figured with such a solid menu that I could trust a good tasting menu. I will go back but I think I'll stick with the permanent menu!"

  • "Not exactly our style, but a fun place to spend a family 50th birthday."

  • "The food was good but the portion size for the price wasn't much. I have been to other tapas places with similar high quality food but you got a little more for your money."

  • "Two things stood out to me: the tasty food and the super friendly staff. They were really good at anticipating when we wanted to order another drink or another delicious bite off the menu. The tapas was a fun way to get a taste many different artistically crafted dishes. Bottom lined - I can dig it. Will so go back."

  • "Food was very good, service extremely helpful, lighting was ambient, comfortable booth, but it was almost impossible to hear ourselves speak - sound absorbers needed. Music was a little too loud too."

  • ""¡Este es el lugar para estar!" (trans.) This is the place to be; friendly servers; impeccable ambience. I initially came for the tapas and I highly recommend the gambas ajillo. I came back for one of the brunches and had great food as well."

  • "I have wanted to come here for years. When trying to make a reservation for 4 on a Saturday night I couldn't get anything in Center City and then remembered Bar Ferdinand. No problem making a reservation. The place is warm, inviting, good energy. Thevservice was attentive. They sat me right away even though everyone else was parking. Love that! The sangria was fair, and the food meh, not bad but nothing memorable or delicious. And with 4 of us we tried a bunch of things. In the future it's Amada for tapas-just need to reserve in advance!"

  • "The food was pretty good. However, the service was a little lacking. We had a reservation via open table and we had to wait at least 25 minutes for our table. I was annoyed because a group clearly came in after us and was seated before us. Luckily, we did get a good table and enjoyed our night out with friends. The first impression was not superb, not sure if we'll be back."

  • "So loud I had trouble hearing my boyfriend speak. We sat for about 10 minutes and finally asked a passing server if someone would take our order. Once our waitress finally came over she was very nice. The food was great. Would not go back with a boyfriend"

  • "David Ansill is probably the best chef in Phila. His genius lies in small plates, intense flavors and gorgeous arrangments. His skill is in extending the palate of traditional tapas to create a new and excellent experience."

  • "I am a big Garces fan but don't get to go out often, I wish I had tried another restaurant. The food was decent but did not wow. The wine was very good though. Decor was very nice but the restaurant was too loud and music was horrible. Service was good except for the server laughing when we enquirer about GF bread options. I would not go back."

  • "Requested back room and were quickly accommodated. Waitress excellent in suggesting dishes - knowledgable about gluten free choices and accommodating about having the kitchen make things without flour where possible. Also, waitress terrific in timing and ordering which dishes came out when - lightest to heaviest. Easy and efficient, pleasant experience which will be worth returning to."

  • "What an excellent experience for a restaurant kind of out of the way from the central Philidelphia locaitons. Excellent decor, incredible bar and wine list, very friendly and professional staff and well the food. I took a group of 7 people all from the food industry, including 2 international executive chefs. As each plate was brought out, it became a better and better experience. Add a few bottles of excellent wine and our dinner could not have been any better. Don't forget to listen to the specials, aside from Erin our waitress being very friendly and professsional, the selection was truly a creative combination of flavors outside the normal tapas. It was a quiet night at the restaurant, but incredible experience."

  • "The food and wine was just perfect. The waitress was very down-to-earth and just seemed to know exactly what we wanted. Get anything that has mushrooms in it. Also, the pork belly was amazing! This was the perfect date to impress a special lady. The music was awesome too."

  • "Outstanding, would definitely recommend this place. The only problem was finding it, doesn't really distinguish itself from the sister restaurant next door which is loud and crowded. Service rivaled high end steak houses in center city"

  • "If you are looking for great Spanish food, you do not have to go to Madrid or into a pricey restaurant in center city this place is absolutely fabulous. Fresh and very tasty food here."
