Diner Reviews
  • "Falling in love with Bar Eolo. We have become fans of the food, the fresh, inventive pasta dishes, the warm service and the atmosphere. A big step above other local italian restaurants."

  • "The food at this restaurant is amazing, from appetizer , through main course ,and deserts. We go there often also because of the good service and kindness of the stuff. Wine is very good too."

  • "Bar Eolo has great food, friendly service, relaxing atmosphere. The specials are knockouts and the pasta dishes in particular are terrific. So glad we live a short walk from Bar Eolo."

  • "We had had good experiences so we took six out of town guests for lunch. The server was less than helpful. The dishes were skimpy and bland. We will not return."

  • "We had a lovely meal with some very special dishes: ricotta with honey and pistachios, Seared cheese and the duck. All terrific. Highly recommended. The Wine list is broad and interesting. Enjoy!"

  • "Excellent pasta and okay wine list by the glass. Service needs to be improved. Menu is varied and interesting and we hope to try it again when we return to NYC."

  • "The service was poor. Our waiter was rude and rolled his eyes multiple times. After about an hour, he suddenly decided to shoot us a smile. They did have decent gluten free food though, which my friend appreciated a lot. "

  • "Nice out door area when the weather is nice. Service bit be slow."

  • "This restaurant is a gem. The Sicilian dishes are outstanding and remind one of trips to Sicily. Pasta con sarde is in season and fantastic as is the pasta con ceppoli. The noise level cane unbearable if you are bothered by noise. This was a Saturday at dinner, so maybe it is quieter at other times"

  • "Interesting menu, flavorful and decent portions. Chicken dish was a little dry, Pastas were excellent. Mozzarella appetizer was a little strange and overpriced by 4-5 dollars. Overall, a cozy, convenient little neighborhood spot although this now, out-of-towner was a little freaked out by the proximity of the subway car that felt like it was rolling through the kitchen."

  • "Bar Eolo serves authentic Sicilian cuisine, not the over sauced over cheesy variety that the average Italian restaurant claims as Sicilian. I have traveled to Sicily many times and other than the fact that obtaining fresh picked lemons, peppers, olives, etc, is not as easily achieved in NYC as in Sicily, this restaurant comes very, very close to imitating the flavors and freshness of Sicilian food. The wines available by the glass complement the dishes so well and the waiters are all knowledgeable. It is a gem. "

  • "Read a little blurb in Saveur magazine about a dish the chef cooked and took a look at the menu. Menu looked great with a lot of great possibilities My wife and I went Sunday night and were just underwhelmed "

  • "We dined with four people. Those who had pasta were very happy. Those who ordered fish on day of many fish specials for Good Friday, were disappointed with soggy sardines and tasteless other fish preparations, including Halibut and Branzinno. When we asked for assistance in selecting a wine to match the food, the server had no knowledge to share but tried anyway. We (politely) ask her for assistance from someone on the staff who knew the list better. "

  • "The food was very good - surprisingly different. The house made ricotta was delicate and flavorful in the buschetta, although it did fall short in the sfingi - a little lemon zest would really have helped there. The combination of raisins and pine nuts with the cauliflower on the bucatini was another tasty surprise. However, the space is small and the tables are close and I was already struggling to hear my dinner companion when suddenly, someone started playing guitar. I thought nothing could sound worse until the man started singing. Really, a very bad idea. Perhaps mid-week would be a better choice for dinner conversation."

  • "What a find! Exciting menu and wonderful cuisine. Try the cauliflower soufflé!!"

  • "I have eaten here four times. Almost every dish I have tasted was well done, but the wait staff sometimes appeared not well trained. For example last Sunday the waiters would try to remove dishes from the table when people were not finished and it took a while for the food to come. (There were only two tables with people at the time.) When my pasta dish came it was slightly cold and a little dried out. The wait staff was friendly but their lack of experience was noticeable. This was made up for by the good food served in modest portions. I recommend this restaurant, but don't be surprised if the service is hit or miss."

  • "Everything tastes incredibly fresh and delicious, especially the pasta. The quality of the food is exceptional for the price."

  • "A deft touch, especially with the small plates and appetizers, mixing foods and seasonings to delight your mouth."

  • "We stopped eating here when the jackhammers chopped up the sidewalk. This was the first time we ate dinner after the project was completed. The food, duck breast and swordfish, was first class, the wine, a blend recommended by the waiter, an Italian-born young man, was delicious and reasonably priced. We think that adding table cloths and linen would spruce up the rather luncheonette atmosphere. The food deserves it. Tablecloths or no, we will return. On second thought, maybe tablecloths are not a good idea. Then so many people would come that we would not be able to get a reservation."

  • "I enjoyed this restaurant on restaurant week, the menu had tons to choose from and everything was delicious, I was a little disappointed with the portions as they were very small. Nonetheless, it was a nice experience with great food!"

  • "I enjoyed my time at Eola. We visited during restaurant week, ordering off the prix fixe menu. The food was terrific and beautifully plated. My favorites were the scallops with cauliflower, ravioli with lamb sausage, and the deconstructed cannoli. The servers was warm and helpful, but I felt they were understaffed. I didn't like the fact there was no coat check because it was hard to navigate a heavy coat through the tight tables. The place was much smaller in person than it appeared in the photos. Overall a good experience in a convenient NYC neighborhood."

  • "Took my husband here for something different for his birthday and we both really enjoyed it! We both had the Restaurant Week prie fixe - he had octopus + swordfish, I had iceberg wedge + tuna. Everything was thoughtfully prepared, fresh, and flavorful. To top it all off the flourless chocolate torta was divine. Very attentive and friendly service as well. We'll definitely be back!"

  • "Went here for a late dinner last friday night for restaurant week. It was packed, but the waiter was really great. My friends and I just wanted to put him in our pocket! The waitress who took over for him was also wonderful. The grilled octopus appetizer was one of the best octopi I've ever had! The rack of lamb was pretty much to die for and my friends noted that the lobster portion in their tagliatelle was really generous and delicious. They also raved about the donuts, in fact, days later one of them is still talking about them. My "deconstructed" type canoli was pretty phenomenal as well! All in all, we'll definitely be coming back again. Restaurant week strikes again!"

  • "What a surprise! This restaurant brought me back to Sicily, from the arancini to the cod fish balls. A laid back environment to just sit back and enjoy trhe simplicity of the room and the delicious food. I'd love to come back in the spring when the front doors are open and I could eat this food and take in the passerbys."

  • "We went on a whim for Restaurant Week...It was an Amazing lunch...We had the grilled octupus and boy it did not disappoint..Great service with a warm Italian feel....Will definitely return!!"

  • "The restaurant is not pretentious, nor was the food la-di-da. From the lovely breadsticks to the rack of lamb, each course was beautifully presented and delicious. The kitchen was flexible in substituting any type of pasta, which we appreciated. The Nero D'Avola (Mandrarossa) was superb. It is easy to run our of adjectives in describing this place and its food. If you go, make sure you try the grilled calamari and charred octopus!"

  • "On a cold winter night it was very uncomfortable being seated so close to the single door. The pasta dishes were excellent. The tagliatelle al limone with lobster was the best pasta dish I've ordered in 20+ years of dining in NYC restaurants."

  • "Having been to Sicily I can safely say that this is a true taste of Sicily. I went with the friends I had traveled to Italy with and we all agreed it brought back fond memories. The octopus was outstanding. The arancini were just like I remembered getting on the street. And the house made pastas (we sampled three) were all....yummy!!! Don't walk, run!"

  • "I met my siblings, husband and kids (ages 17 and 20) for dinner on a Friday night to celebrate my birthday. We had a great meal with friendly, attentive service and we did not feel rushed. The restaurant decor was rustic with clean lines. The food was tasty enough that my brother was wishing for a larger portion. Very convenient to Penn Station for the commute back to NJ."

  • "Our family came here for the Feast of the Seven Fishes on Christmas Eve and had a delightful dinner. The seafood lovers in the family enjoyed it the most, of course, but everyone managed to find something to their taste. The recommended wine was delicious and reasonably priced and the restaurant was very festive with friendly servie ... a great evening!"

  • "My wife and I had a great experience here this week. We've been here before - actually came here on a few dates when the restaurant first opened and before we were married. We were excited to try Eolo again as we will be visiting Sicily in May. Since our last visit, the space underwent a beautiful renovation. Its more more warm and inviting. The food was also better than ever. Super fresh seafood. I had a tuna dish with a sea urchin sauce that was delicious. My wife had a black squid ink pasta dish that she throughly enjoyed. We started out with the octopus appetizer. Also, our server was very knowledgeable about the food and wine and most importantly about Sicily. And the chef gave us many restaurant tips for our upcoming trip there."

  • "Bar Eolo, like its predecessor without the "Bar" in the title, has great potential but misses the mark. Service is weirdly inattentive. The great menu isn't fully realized in action ... I couldn't believe my fresh pasta dish (buccatini) came out overcooked. How could this place not nail al dente every time? There was no (or no discernible) music in the room, so the space felt low energy. I hope management can make improvements. I want this place to succeed. David"
