Diner Reviews
  • "My boyfriend and I were excited to get lunch here for restaurant week. After arriving, we were slightly hesitant to go in when we saw the B rating in the window and noticed only one group of people sitting inside (there were people sitting outside). We decided to take a chance since the menu caught our eye. I most likely would not return to this restaurant for a few reasons: 1- the service was slow. I don't fully understand the wait time given that there were 2 staff and about 6 tables of people. 2- the food was bland. I was surprised by the lack of flavor given the kind of cuisine. 3- I'm not entirely sure about the cleanliness of the restaurant. Bread crumbs were on the plate where we were seated."

  • "Dined here with a friend for Restaurant Week. Ate outdoors on a lovely summer night. Food was delicious and a lot to choose from, but portions a little small -- maybe due to Rest Wk specials? Wines pretty expensive. Am planning to try for lunch before weather gets too cold for outdoor table. Service was excellent - attentive without being obtrusive, and the waiter appeared to actually be Sicilian, so very knowledgeable about the dishes."

  • "The food was delicious, creative, well prepared. The combinations and use of ingredients were unusual. The wait staff were great but the kitchen could not keep up with the orders and the wait between courses was interminable. Would have been fine if we could have heard each other and if the chairs were comfortable - maybe it is better when it is not restaurant week"

  • "If you like rice balls check this place out. I hope your not hungry though cause you're only getting one tiny measly ball. The pasta was good but the portion was suitable for a child. Dessert was just ok. Out waiter was non existent after taking our order. Probably cause we had a party of 6 and 20 percent was already added in. During dessert we weren't even offered coffee or after dinner drinks. I felt like we were treated like children. FYI our party was all 30 and older. NOT going back."

  • "Good menu, poorly executed. They missed on every dish—too much red onion and capers on the carpaccio, under seasoned on the second course, low quality fishy sardines, skimpy "cannolo" (barely four bites), and store-bought squeeze bottle chocolate sauce with the sfinci. During restaurant week you'd think they would make an extra effort to get you to come back."

  • "The food was actually pretty good. But the service was disappointing. Wait staffs show no enthusiastism and forgetful. Manager seems like she could care less. Overall everybody just looked like they don't want to work. How much can we enjoy surrounded by negative energy!"

  • "Right down to the homemade bread. If you're looking for homemade pasta with sardines and raisins, just like in Palermo, this is your place. Donuts are life altering."

  • "Really enjoyed the prix-fixe lunch. Excellent choices and wonderful flavors."

  • "75 or more percent of the menu was an added cost, it kind of defeats the purpose and fun of restaurant week"

  • "Bar Eolo continues to impress with never miss dishes and great specials. the staff is friendly, welcoming and professional; the crowd is smart and informed. Bar Eolo MUST endure for years and years to come. We have not had a menu miss yet. Rich Flavors, great textures and beautiful presentation."

  • "Went here for restaurant week and was disappointed most of the menu items you had to pay extra for on top of the $38 dinner. Staying with the non-extra items, the meal was just OK. Did not make me want to return."

  • "As soon as I finished the meal I couldn't remember what I had eaten, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either, especially considering the price tag."

  • "Great place to try for Restaurant Week, lots of options were offered!"

  • "I could not believe the amount of gluten free options they had that were all so delicious. I will definitely be going back."

  • "The noise level was a problem as it was difficult to have even a simple conversation. The food was mixed. The tuna tartare was very good, the octopus was good, the pastas and the wine were not particularly good."

  • "The food was really great. The staff was very attentive. The ambiance needs help. It is a little "diner" like. The decorations are a bit cheap, plastic poinsettias draping the bar etc."

  • "normally love Eolo and have been there several times as it is very close to our apartment - this time however the food wasn't quite up to par - we requested our normal table in the corner and had made a reservation in advance - when we checked in, i asked the hostess for the table, which was unoccupied - she initially said yes, then spoke to a man in front of us in hushed tones and she walked us to a different table without an explanation - if it had been reserved for someone else, all they had to do was explain that - but they said nothing to us, which was disappointing - as while maybe not a "regular," we have gone now a half dozen times and it had turned into one of our favorite neighborhood restaurants"

  • "Eolo serves delicious Sicilian dishes with very create twists. You find all sorts of delightful surprises in appetizers, antipastos, pastas, main courses and to desserts. The wine list is comprehensive but still reasonably priced. Service is very friendly and professional."

  • "Falling in love with Bar Eolo. We have become fans of the food, the fresh, inventive pasta dishes, the warm service and the atmosphere. A big step above other local italian restaurants."

  • "The food at this restaurant is amazing, from appetizer , through main course ,and deserts. We go there often also because of the good service and kindness of the stuff. Wine is very good too."

  • "Bar Eolo has great food, friendly service, relaxing atmosphere. The specials are knockouts and the pasta dishes in particular are terrific. So glad we live a short walk from Bar Eolo."

  • "We had had good experiences so we took six out of town guests for lunch. The server was less than helpful. The dishes were skimpy and bland. We will not return."

  • "We had a lovely meal with some very special dishes: ricotta with honey and pistachios, Seared cheese and the duck. All terrific. Highly recommended. The Wine list is broad and interesting. Enjoy!"

  • "Excellent pasta and okay wine list by the glass. Service needs to be improved. Menu is varied and interesting and we hope to try it again when we return to NYC."

  • "The service was poor. Our waiter was rude and rolled his eyes multiple times. After about an hour, he suddenly decided to shoot us a smile. They did have decent gluten free food though, which my friend appreciated a lot. "

  • "Nice out door area when the weather is nice. Service bit be slow."

  • "This restaurant is a gem. The Sicilian dishes are outstanding and remind one of trips to Sicily. Pasta con sarde is in season and fantastic as is the pasta con ceppoli. The noise level cane unbearable if you are bothered by noise. This was a Saturday at dinner, so maybe it is quieter at other times"

  • "Bar Eolo serves authentic Sicilian cuisine, not the over sauced over cheesy variety that the average Italian restaurant claims as Sicilian. I have traveled to Sicily many times and other than the fact that obtaining fresh picked lemons, peppers, olives, etc, is not as easily achieved in NYC as in Sicily, this restaurant comes very, very close to imitating the flavors and freshness of Sicilian food. The wines available by the glass complement the dishes so well and the waiters are all knowledgeable. It is a gem. "

  • "Read a little blurb in Saveur magazine about a dish the chef cooked and took a look at the menu. Menu looked great with a lot of great possibilities My wife and I went Sunday night and were just underwhelmed "

  • "We dined with four people. Those who had pasta were very happy. Those who ordered fish on day of many fish specials for Good Friday, were disappointed with soggy sardines and tasteless other fish preparations, including Halibut and Branzinno. When we asked for assistance in selecting a wine to match the food, the server had no knowledge to share but tried anyway. We (politely) ask her for assistance from someone on the staff who knew the list better. "

  • "Interesting menu, flavorful and decent portions. Chicken dish was a little dry, Pastas were excellent. Mozzarella appetizer was a little strange and overpriced by 4-5 dollars. Overall, a cozy, convenient little neighborhood spot although this now, out-of-towner was a little freaked out by the proximity of the subway car that felt like it was rolling through the kitchen."

  • "The food was very good - surprisingly different. The house made ricotta was delicate and flavorful in the buschetta, although it did fall short in the sfingi - a little lemon zest would really have helped there. The combination of raisins and pine nuts with the cauliflower on the bucatini was another tasty surprise. However, the space is small and the tables are close and I was already struggling to hear my dinner companion when suddenly, someone started playing guitar. I thought nothing could sound worse until the man started singing. Really, a very bad idea. Perhaps mid-week would be a better choice for dinner conversation."

  • "What a find! Exciting menu and wonderful cuisine. Try the cauliflower soufflé!!"

  • "I have eaten here four times. Almost every dish I have tasted was well done, but the wait staff sometimes appeared not well trained. For example last Sunday the waiters would try to remove dishes from the table when people were not finished and it took a while for the food to come. (There were only two tables with people at the time.) When my pasta dish came it was slightly cold and a little dried out. The wait staff was friendly but their lack of experience was noticeable. This was made up for by the good food served in modest portions. I recommend this restaurant, but don't be surprised if the service is hit or miss."

  • "Everything tastes incredibly fresh and delicious, especially the pasta. The quality of the food is exceptional for the price."

  • "A deft touch, especially with the small plates and appetizers, mixing foods and seasonings to delight your mouth."

  • "We stopped eating here when the jackhammers chopped up the sidewalk. This was the first time we ate dinner after the project was completed. The food, duck breast and swordfish, was first class, the wine, a blend recommended by the waiter, an Italian-born young man, was delicious and reasonably priced. We think that adding table cloths and linen would spruce up the rather luncheonette atmosphere. The food deserves it. Tablecloths or no, we will return. On second thought, maybe tablecloths are not a good idea. Then so many people would come that we would not be able to get a reservation."
