Diner Reviews
  • "Definitely, try the chicken liver mousse it is soo good. Cocktails were delicious as well. We shared a few small plates that were all excellent, but that chicken liver was amazing. Service was friendly, knowledgeable and helpful."

  • "This is in our top 3 and has yet to disappoint! We had the halibut crudo with tarragon aioli (yum and delicate), then had the black cod and seafood risotto...best ever! Finally, we ended with gouda and lamb belly board. Great wine selection, service is always super friendly and the atmosphere is enjoyable. This is our go to place!"

  • "Bar Avignon is great every time: special occasions or a simple night out for two. I have always loved the food (fantastic pork chops), the cocktails, the wine selection (we were introduced to Cote du Rhone here) and the friendly and welcoming service. This is one of our favorites on a very selective short list!"

  • "We appreciated the effort the restaurant made to dampen the noise. Four of us could have a conversation without shouting---a rarity these days! In addition, the food was outstanding. We will return."

  • "It was great to share this delicious meal with my goddaughter. The chicken was so tasty and the pork chop done perfectly. The Panna cotta was delicious though I felt the addition of pepper was too much, maybe smaller pieces of the pepper would have worked better."

  • "A friend and I came here for the last night of Portland Dining Month and it was fantastic. The service was exceptional (thanks, Robert!), the food was exquisite, and the atmosphere was enchanting. We had salad, soup, chicken, risotto, panna cotta, and cookies. I had a mint limeade and she had a glass of red wine. We were both completely satiated and happy. I will be back, for sure."

  • "My sister and I went to Bar Avignon on the last day of Portland dining month, it was the first visit for both of us. We both selected the 3 course chicken dinner special with a pre-dinner cocktail and a bottle of wine with dinner. The food arrived promptly and has hot and tasty, but a bit on the bland side. Don't get me wrong, we ate our food but it just didn't wow us. The cocktails and service were a wow factor and we enjoyed both. Robert was our server and he was great, attentive and fun. It was the best service I've had in Portland for a while. The wine list offered a lot of choice both by the bottle and by the glass. We will be back for Happy Hour."

  • "I'm been here 3 times. Love the food (although perhaps a bit more fennel than I would have liked in several dishes), love the wine list. Mussels were divine, hazelnut and warm olive nibbles also terrific. Tables are a bit close and it can be loud, but was fine on a Sunday early evening. Music was Motown this past time -- okay for me, but a bit incongruent perhaps, which I'm sure is what they're aiming for. I will keep coming back -- and the staff is wonderful, very kind to my 86-year old mother."

  • "Thanks to Dine Out Month we discovered this small bar and restaurant on Division. They have good good choices of beer and wine. The cream soup was so good. The pork chops were cooked correctly and served over a nice selection of vegetables. Hot peanut butter /chocolate chip cookies with milk the perfect ending to the meal. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed."

  • "Bar Avignon had a nice relaxed feeling. We were able to carry on a nice conversation with out being rushed. I felt the service was outstanding, our dishes arrived at a nice relaxed pace. The white bean and fennel soup was very good. I had the chicken and it was cooked to perfection. My friend had the mushroom risotto and she though it was excellent. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive."

  • "We tried this restaurant during the Portland Dining Month promotion. Had never been. So glad we went. We loved the atmosphere and the food was great. Everything was really good. No S&P on the table we noticed. Did not need it. Food was perfectly seasoned. The service was efficient and friendly. Cozy, friendly, comfortable feel. I marked it as a neighborhood gem. Not our neighborhood unfortunately. More than an hour from us but we intend to return. The regular menu was enticing. We highly recommend this establishment."

  • "My wife and I used the excuse of Portland Dining Month to try Bar Avignon for the first time. We had a great experience. The atmosphere was energetic yet not too noisy or chaotic. Our waiter was friendly, knowledgeable, and showed up at our table at just the right times. The food was excellent. My wife enjoyed her salad and pork chop. I had a very good risotto. Unfortunately, I could not find a vegetarian entree option on the regular menu so I'm not sure we will go back. We would like to return and I may call to find out if it is possible to have a vegetarian meal. Very good."

  • "The food was good but the portions were very small. We asked the waitress if an appetizer would be large enough for an entree. She said yes and we were very surprised when the food showed up an my meal had about 5 pieces of fish the size of my thumb and very thin. Not exactly an entree but it was good. We ended up at Wendys for burgers on the way home though!."

  • "We chose this as one of two restaurants to try during the March "Dining Out" experience. It was a great choice! Everything about the meal was great, from the service to the food, to the wine flights we tried on a whim! The cookies and vanilla bean milk were to die for! We'll be back!"

  • "Amazing! First time at Bar Avignon and I will definitely be back. I had the half roasted chicken on the PDX Dining Month menu and it was delicious, moist and the perfect size. I finished with the PB and chocolate chip cookies and vanilla milk... the cookies were warm and just out of the oven! Milk and cookies = cutest dessert idea ever! The only thing was we ordered olives with our wine and never received them, but we had more than enough food so it wasn't the end of the world."

  • "Portland eats Month is a good time to try new restaurants or new items on a menu. There were 5 of us dining. The fennel white bean soup was delicious! The other items were Good, flavorful, and attractive. The ingredients not complicated enough for real "foodies".. Pork chop, yam, Brussels sprouts... All items that tasted good together and looked attractive On the plate. The highlight of any evening at BarAvignon would be their chocolate sundae With Carmel, and pretzel . One sundae 5 spoons. ( We had our own dessert included with The meal) Service was excellent .. Very good experience."

  • "If only I lived closer... This is a wonderful neighborhood bar, but one that is well worth going out of your way for. The food, the service and the ambiance are wonderful. They have great specials on some Wednesdays that are fantastic."

  • "We did the dining month menu. Dinner did not include bread. Soup and salad were simple, good, but not memorable. The chicken and pork dish were tasty, tender and soft - meat was done quite well. The cookies were warm, fresh, soft & moist - with a bit of sea salt. The milk that came with it was a sweet milk - that was good too. The panna cotta was the best I've had! The taste is light & fresh but full of vibrant flavor, with a layer of honey on top - been thinking of going back just to eat the panna cotta."

  • "Went during Portland Dining Month to celebrate my fiancee's 30th birthday. Needless to say, it not only impressed us, but blew us out of the water with how incredible the food quality and ambiance were. Perfect for a 'date night' or a smaller gathering of friends for snacks and drinks. Very friendly service (a tad, tad slow, but it was a full house so it was very understandable), incredible drinks and coffee (9oz french press with Stumptown coffee!!) and the Draper Valley Chicken was literally the best, most tender chicken I had ever had in my life.... Mind. Blown. They even remembered that it was my fiancee's birthday without a reminder from me. Incredible! The question isn't 'will I be back?'....but rather 'when will I go back?!?'."

  • "great food and service. I had the 3 course dinner with the chicken, might be the best chicken I've had anywhere."

  • "Aside from the food being excellent, the waitstaff here was awesome- attentive without intruding into conversation. I will definitely return. This would be a great date spot!"

  • "We arrived early thinking we would have a drink while we waited for our friends, the place was packed but luckily our table was ready early so we were able to sit and order a drink while we waited. We ordered a drink and 6 oysters, they took a while to get back to us but they were worth the wait! Food was generous in portions but not sloppy, dellicious and filling in just the right proportions. It's always hard to try a new place but we will definitely go back to this one! Menu was fresh and seasonal...wine list was good but not overwhelming (you can look at it all and know you are making a good decision!)."

  • "Most excellent! Fabulous total dining experience from ambiance to service and food - feels like you are in someone's home! The stand out dish was white bean-fennel soup is just like a warm tummy hug. Highly recommend if you are looking for a friendly complete dining experience! The owner was entirely gracious and made sure we enjoyed our experience. He was engaging but not intrusive. All staff and owner were attentive and cared about what they did. We were thoroughly impressed all-around. And we'll be back! Enjoy!"

  • "This is our second visit to Avignon and we were delighted that it was as good as we remembered it to be. Tiny, cozy, place with great food, but is on the pricey side, When we want something special or to celebrate a special occasion we choose Bar Avignon. It does not disappoint."

  • "We went this time for the Portland Dine Out Month. They were very gracious when our 2 other friends had to cancel at the last moment. Gave us an excellent table and were prompt and helpful with the service. Food was very good and the drinks were too. I thought their menu choices for the Dine Out menu were a good variety so it appealed to both of us."

  • "This cozy little hamlet in Porltand's Southeast side is every bit as good as advertised. Randy, one of the owners, sat our group in the sectioned off wine room, which was warm and gave us a small level of privacy. The appetizers ordered for the table were simply fantastic, with the pickled vegetables the hands-down winner, although the mussels and baked olives were no slouches. Everyone's main courses were prepared to perfection. I had the baked rabbit, which was laid on top of a bed of greens and chutney. The combination of flavors blended perfectly and the meat was scrumptious and moist. The mixed drinks are top-notch and I really like the large, slow-melting ice cubes they serve in their cocktails. The service was exceptional also."

  • "We had a lovely dinner, but we were hoping for a spectacular dinner. Maybe we're jaded by all the excellent food in Portland but the food last weekend was nothing grand. Portions were small but adequate. Service was pleasant but not engaging. We left hoping for a little more of something but nothing was really "wrong.""

  • "I booked it for Valentines at 5:30 (the latest available). We were seated right away. Oysters were stellar. Tried a couple of the standard menu items; the pickled veggies and winter greens/squash salad. Both were exceptionally fresh and delicious. Also tried the crab cakes and ahi from the special menu. The crab cakes were light, with a mild bed of slaw that allowed the flavor of the crab to come through. The Ahi was phenomenal. Our server was efficient, patient, and helpful. She and didn't press us, which was nice, particularly on Valentines day. The restaurant is small but chic and sophisticated. We'll be back and will recommend."
