I've eaten at Bar Americain several times and always enjoyed the food. Tonight's meal was very average and certainly not worth the cost. We were 3 people and each had an appetizer - deviled eggs (good), flatbread pizza (yummy), triple greens salad (very bland - dressing was watery and flavorless). For our entrees my husband ordered the pork chop which was REALLY overdone and looked like a supermarket pork chop, certainly not what you'd expect for a $34. My daughter had the fried chicken which was ok and I had the shrimp and grits which had amazing flavor but the grits were the consistency of soup and fairly greasy but still a winner although the shrimp were overcooked. Bill was $288 before tip (1 bottle of $80 wine). Value wasn't there.

Everything here was sort of blah. It looked dated and tired, it seemed touristy and the food was really nothing to write home about. Our server was very nice and very attentive. She recommended the strawberry soufflé which was the best thing we had.

I brought friends from out of town to dinner before broadway show. This was an event the wait staff were so on point courteous and very friendly. The food was divine, I had the skate, friends had the ny strip and the creamiest shrimp anf grits. As for the desserts...oh the desserts were heaven. The strawberry and creme soufflé was amazing amd the pistachio ice cream with chocolate orange sauce was tummy hugging good. I will definitely be going back. Absolutely delicious and lived up to every expectation I had and more!!

Bar Americain was a great spot to go to before we went to watch Cabaret. The service was very quick and very good. The food was very tasty albeit a bit unique. It wasn't the traditional american fare but definitely very good. I would definitely make this a pre-theater staple. I was very pleased and the decor is minimal, yet chic and clean.

The service was excellent, however, the meal was only moderate compared to other experiences that I've had in my hometown Pittsburgh for a similar price. The bison filet was made to the correct temperature, but the flavor of the dish was less than exciting.

The menu is inventive without going too far. Everything was excellent. I had the oysters and bacon pizza as an appetizer (you simply must have the pizza) and had the snapper for the entree. The snapper was served with a Cuban/ carribean flair. It was cooked perfectly. My friend had the sirloin which was seasoned very well. The staff were friendly and attentive.

We were thoroughly disappointed with Bar Americain. We have come to expect good things from Bobby Flay's restaurants (like the now closed Mesa Grill). Bar Americain looks nice, but given its location in a tourist zone, the food is dumbed down. It was bland and cheap tasting. I started with tuna tartar, which was fine but quite bland. Then onto a steak with provolone sauce. The steak looked great, but was very tasteless with the texture like it had been frozen. The sauce tasted like it was made with powder. I would have thought that maybe they were just having an off night, but when I talked to our waitress, she confirmed that the food "isn't good" and that other Bobby Flay restaurants are better. I wish the prices reflected that!

When I decided to surprise my wife and take her to NY to see a show for her birthday I knew she would be ecstatic if I also took her to Bar American, which she has expressed in the past to be her FAVORITE all time restaurant. The food is excellent and the service, if you can believe it, is equal to the food. We both thoroughly enjoyed the experience again as we have in the past for our anniversary other special occasions. Hope to be back soon!

After reading very mixed reviews from diners about Bar Americain, I was reluctant to eat here, but I'm very happy I did. The food, service and ambience were excellent. I ordered the deviled egg with pickled shrimp (very aggressive vinegary taste, but well balanced), pork chop with sour tangerine glaze, and strawberry souffle. My date ordered the fried chicken, which was moist and delicious, and the chocolate pie. I was very pleased with all of our food, and would definitely dine here again.

This is one of my favorite places to dine in the City. Been here many times, and I have never had a bad experience. The staff is professional and helpful with recommendations. They really make you feel at home! The food is excellent, and the portions are always generous. This time I took an out of town sorority sister who was here for business. She was duly impressed and happy by my choice. This is always a solid choice for everyone.

  • Bar Americain Too Pricey
    OpenTable Diner Since 2014
    Dined on 8/20/2014
This restaurant is quite nice-looking inside with its mirrors, polished wood and gleaming brass. Some of the food is excellent -- from the raw bar, for example -- representing careful choices in sourcing. But entrees from $35 to $45 are priced too high for the amount of food on the plate and the overall lack of creativity in the dishes. The shrimp and grits lacked flavor (c'mon Bobby!) and the duck confit was just average and expected. The rabbit in mustard sauce also lacked flavor. The best offering was the lamb; high quality meat cooked perfectly. But there are too many places in Manhattan where one can experience innovative and memorable dining to justify the high prices charged here. The menu and its execution need a serious shake up

This was our third visit for dinner at Bar Americain and it was just as delicious as ever. The service is impeccable. The wait staff is very attentive and extremely polite. The food... oh the food! The shrimp and grits were heavenly. The Vidalia onion soup was the best we have ever had. My son had the fried chicken and loved every morsel. My other son had the Miami pork chop - it was cooked to perfection. Desserts were equally heavenly. We ordered and all shared the espresso creme brulee, the profiteroles with pistachio soft serve ice cream and the German chocolate cake were out of this world. My mouth is watering just typing about it! From appetizers to dessert every morsel was fabulous.

From the moment we stepped into the beautifully decorated dining room we had a wonderful experience. The servers were warm, attentive, and knowledgeable. The food was excellent. We enjoyed a perfectly cooked and seasoned strip steak and a moist lamb loin over quinoa. The sommelier asked all the right questions and then steered us toward a perfect Rhone to accompany our meal. We were delighted when our dessert arrived with a 'Happy Anniversary' message spelled out in chocolate on the plate. We traveled across the country for a 4-day visit in NYC and this was by far the finest meal during our stay. Definitely worth a repeat on our next trip.

Bar Americain is consistently excellent. The only problem I have here is my own inability to explore the menu. I love the avocado and crab starter and have one or two mains that are so good I feel as if I'm cheating on them if I order something else. The rabbit is my favorite. The wine list includes a good choice of superb California reds that, considering the calibre of the restaurant, are reasonably priced. A sommieler provides snob-free advice. I also seem to be lucky to get the same waiter quite often and the service is unobtrusive and professional. I've brought my wife and six year old son here, groups of friends and most recently some business associates. It is suited for each type of occasion.

The only thing I can say is that the wine was the best part of the meal. Despite a promising menu the food seemed as if it was prepared en masse ahead of time and reheated in a microwave just before serving. The sauces tasted as if they were out of a box and oversalted to compensate. I have been to the original Mesa Grill a few times and have always walked away satisfied. Sadly this place is harmful to the Bobby Flay brand and image and is really no different to an of the other theme park restaurants you find in this part of NYC, where you feel you could just as easily be sitting in a mall. Unfortunately, this new attempt at American Brasserie does hold up to the memory of the predecessor which previously inhabited the very same space.
