Diner Reviews
  • "Food was good but feel a bit over priced. I had fried chicken for entree, it was good but didn't wow me, don't think it worth $33. It wasn't that busy on Tuesday night, but our waiter was not that attentive, for the level of this place and the price we paid, we excepted more on the service."

  • "Steak was very good. Fried chicken was OK. Visiting NYC from the south, so I know my fried chicken. The service was very good and the waiter we had (Christophe) was very attentive, helpful, and friendly. We went before a show, and it was a great start to a fantastic evening with my fiance. I would recommend."

  • "Had a birthday dinner here after seeing a show and couldn't be happier. Everything about our meal was delicious. Tuna tartare to die for!! Great place, great food. Highly recommended."

  • "Bar Americain was a great experience. The staff was friendly, knowledgable and helpful in helping you make you selection from the menu. The food was very much as I expected at a Bobby Flay restaurant-good with just the right touch of class."

  • "We tried Bar Americain for Saturday brunch before heading to a nearby matinee performance and came away very satisfied with all aspects of our meal. Great food and attentive service made for a most pleasant experience. We would not hesitate to try Bar Americain for lunch or dinner again in the future."

  • "The food was very middle of the road for the price especially compared to other Bobby Flay restaurants. The rib eye was too thin cut and the quality was about what I could get at any grocery store. The cioppino was better but half of my mussels were closed. The drink menu was uninspired and the dessert menu was just okay."

  • "Did online reservations which was perfect. We arrived early and were seated promptly. Our server was prompt, polite and was extremely familiar with the menu. The food was delist, we started with the Escargot which was brilliant, I had the pork chop with the quail egg and sweet potatoes, my son had the swordfish. Both of our meals were outstanding. If you are in New York and you love good food this is a must"

  • "This dinning experience was all that I imagined it would be. In NYC from Texas with my daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter who was attending a off broadway camp. This was a special treat from my husband to us and we all enjoyed this dinning experience. The food was out of hhe ordinary, just as we anticipated. The service was special. The obeisance was just right. My second trip here and also have dined at Mesa grill I will be back"

  • "...at his wonderful midtown restaurant, Bar Americain. From the friendly greeting upon checking in with the maitre d', to the wonderful specials (the swordfish garnished with razor clams was sublime), the fine selection of wines to accompany the fabulous food, and an ambience that is warmly lit, this is what fine dining looks and tastes like."

  • "Service was great. More than enough employees - servers were standing around. We ate lunch at 2pm. Seated immediately after arrival. Ordered chips as an app, came with a blue cheese dip. Salads and burgers also had plenty of blue cheese, almost too much. Pizza and Burger American were delicious."

  • "Great food and fun menu! Loved the oysters, blue cheese chips, shrimp n grits! Waitress was not great. She had issues dividing our bill for a party of 4. Not that difficult. Did not return with exact change and took it upon herself to round down. Rude. Hostess was great. Food was great. Will return and ask for different server"

  • "Food quality and service is consistently good. I am always up for going here. Plenty of good reasonable white wines on the menu for the summer months too."

  • "40th anniversary dinner celebration which doesn't come cheap. Starters were oysters bad crab coconut cocktail, which was so large it was lunch the next day. Dinners were both snapper, Florida style and a side of asparagus. The food was impeccable and the service was spot on. We had a surprise dessert of cherry pie and rolled out the door."

  • "My friend and I wanted an up-beat restaurant that also had good food. We're both brand new widows who can cry at the drop of a hat, but thought it might be good for us to go to a great place that might give us a lift. Well, everything started at the bar. The bartender couldn't have been nicer, happier, nor more accommodating. Dinner was awesome, although we probably ordered far too much. We began with two outrageous appetizers, a duck confit, and seafood "shots", and then shared the entrees as well. The entrees were a breast of duck, and the snapper I STRONGLY suggest and HIGHLY recommend Bar Americain! It's wonderful!!!!!"

  • "I wanted to try a restaurant of Bobby Flay and this being so close to our Broadway play was a perfect find. Great service, great flavors, relaxing environment - would definitley recommend."

  • "My guests and I were a bit disappointed with the food. I ordered a glass of red wine which when I sipped it you could tell it was old. They promptly did open a fresh bottle and brought me a new glass of wine. We ordered the potato chips with blue cheese dip which had too few chips in comparison to dip. They served both in a small bowl when they should have filled the small bowl with chips and put the dip on the side. I ordered the rabbit which was a bit dry. The food was not terrible but going to a Bobby Flay restaurant we expected a bit better. I have been to this restaurant before and it was much better. Maybe we hit it on a bad night."

  • "Went to Bar Americain on both Saturday and Sunday night on this trip to NYC. Saturday was much more crowded. Sunday much less so, and quite pleasant for conversation. Had very good service on both evenings. On Saturday, the meals were delivered almost too quickly, probably in less than 15 minutes after we were seated. Glad to see that some items with a Southern touch have been added to the menu since we are not big beef eaters. Highly recommend the fried chicken! We were very sad to hear of Mesa Grill closing last year as this was our favorite restaurant in the city. However, we had very good experiences at B.A. and am sure we will return."

  • "Seriously, a well-modulated place with nice selections, well-made dishes and great service, all artfully presented in a very cool space. Couldn't ask for much more. Our server was just outstanding--in fact everyone we encountered was professional, polite and just generally pleasant to us. Next time I'm back in NY I wouldn't hesitate to visit again. Special recognition for the Manhattan clam chowdah--all the elements I could hope for: briny clam and tomato base with just the right amount of thyme--I could eat it all day (certainly beats the white goopy stuff that I never order where I live now)."

  • "Really enjoyed our dinner, food was great, had a different take on things but worked well together. Ambience was nice. A little noisy and the table we were at was too close to the other tables. Staff was friendly and helpful. Would definetly go again."

  • "Loved the Mesa Grill in Vegas. Thought the same company would yield a wonderful meal and occasion (anniversary) at the Bar Americain in NYC. Wrong! Though I reserved weeks in advance, we got a table by the front door (endured the receptionists backsides). My steak was tough and chewy and every item had a sweet sauce on it - every item. Service was polite and quick."

  • "We have been to BA several times over the past few years. For the first time, we were rushed. You are asked if you have show plans, and we said no. But after getting a bottle of wine, 4 different people (our waiter + 3 others) kept stopping by and adding to our glasses. Typically they fill a red wine glass about 1/3, but the last server poured, saw there was an inch or two left in the bottle, and dumped it in my wife's glass, which was then an inch or so from the top. Having an $80 bottle of wine poured out before the appetizers are finished is obnoxious. It WAS a first disappointment; we hope it isn't repeated."

  • "From Scotch to espresso and everything in between it was wonderful a experience. My perfectly cooked NY Strip was tender and moist. The rub did not over power and although I am not a fan of anyone's steak sauce, it was nice that it came on the side, rather then drenching a great piece of meat. Spinach was not overcooked, tasty and enough in one side to feed the three of us. The raw oysters were cold, fresh, and yummy! My companions who had a ribeye, with the same enjoyment as my NY strip and the Red Snapper which was perfectly prepared and not over done were equally satisfied. The wine list is impressive and the wine steward was helpful, knowledgable and in no way condescending. Our waiter could not have been any more pleasant or patient"

  • "This Bobby Flay restaurant is a safe bet for a good dinner in Mid-Town. A bit pricey, but I do recommend it."

  • "Our waiter was attentive and courteous. Each entree in our group of four was delicious and beautifully presented on the plate. The Vidalia onion soup divine, as was my friend's crab and mashed avocado appetizer. The noise level was certainly vibrant when we arrived, but modulated as the early dinner crowd dispersed, allowing our dinner conversation to be pleasantly conducted. A wonderful experience!"

  • "Have been here many times and the food is always delicious. Of note, the creamed corn and corn bread/muffins. This time however we had a nice but oh so annoying server who hovered over us and kept trying to get us to order additional things. Ambiance is nice - big restaurant to lots of space and tables not overly close together."

  • "My wife and I have 4 children, so when we get the rare chance to go out we like to go to a fancier place like a Bobby Flay restaurant but thursday night was a shock. We were sat right behind the bar so I had people drinking, standing right over my shoulders. It was 7:30pm and they were already out of the days special, "blacked prime rib" . I got the rib eye blackened and it was over cooked and all I could taste was char. The waitress was more concerned with socializing than doing her job. My wife's ciappino ( seafood dish) came to the table with 3 mussels still closed and the waitress " forgot" the shell bowl, fork, and shell cracker. No manager ever came by to touch the table, or I would have told him or her myself."

  • "This is a perfect restaurant for pre or post theater dining. We were both in the mood for steak and thought we'd try the hanger steak. It was so flavorful and tender and absolutely cooked to perfection (med rare). Also tried the creamed corn - perfectly spiced - yum! Our waiter was very attentive without intruding. We were out in time for the theater and never felt rushed. Great spot for drinks, too."

  • "Bobby Flay gives traditional Southern recipes a creative twist. We had oysters and also deviled egg with pickled shrimp as an app. Both were good; the deviled egg was difintely the star pick. Entrees were duckling with pickled peaches and the Miami pork chop with tangerine glaze. Once again, both were good choices although we would have preferred it if the pickled peaches were not as finely diced. There was no finding fault with the chop: it was perfectly seared and juicy; the tart tangerine was superb. I ordered an extra ramekin of the glaze, it was that good. Dessert: a shared slice of German chocolate cake; it was so decadently rich, we could not finish it. This will become a regular dining spot for us on our freqyent visits to NYC."

  • "I WAS SO EXCITED TO FINALLY TRY BOBBY FLAY'S PLACE. AND MY EXPECTATIONS WERE TRULY EXCEEDED! MY COWORKERS AND I HAD AN AMAZING LUNCH. THE FOOD COULD NOT HAVE BEEN BETTER. AND THE SERVICE WAS OUTSTANDING!! OUR WAITRESS WAS PERFECT. SHE WAS SO SWEET AND SO HELPFUL. AND HER SERVICE WAS IMPECCABLE! HER NAME WAS AMANDA, SHE ROCKED! I CANNOT WAIT TO GO BACK. I HAVE RECOMMENDED BAR AMERICAIN TO EVERYONE I KNOW!"

  • "Went for weekday lunch. Busy place!! Excellent food and service - worth the $. I would highly recommend and skip the usual restaurant row suggestions. I went with high expectations and was not disappointed. Had shrimp and gritz, pot pie, cookie platter. All top notch!!!"

  • "My first trip to NYC. We decided to eat at this restaurant over all of the other famous ones. Money was no object. Our waiter couldn't recommend a wine & forgot our sides. Then he brought us a side that was "on the house" but appeared to have been sitting out for a while. One of us never got our side. Two of us ordered filet mignon cooked medium. They were both so raw they were not edible. It was a terrible experience. I am so disappointed we wasted our time & money at this place on our vacation. I will never return or recommend any of our friends to it either."

  • "Probably the best meal I've ever had. The food was outstanding and so was the service. I had the Miami porkchop and it was perfectly cooked, still a little pink inside. Most places don't understand how to cook pork. I was surprised how reasonably priced it was, too. I really don't have one negative comment. Next time I'm in the city I'll be going back for sure."
