Diner Reviews
  • "40th anniversary dinner celebration which doesn't come cheap. Starters were oysters bad crab coconut cocktail, which was so large it was lunch the next day. Dinners were both snapper, Florida style and a side of asparagus. The food was impeccable and the service was spot on. We had a surprise dessert of cherry pie and rolled out the door."

  • "I wanted to try a restaurant of Bobby Flay and this being so close to our Broadway play was a perfect find. Great service, great flavors, relaxing environment - would definitley recommend."

  • "Went to Bar Americain on both Saturday and Sunday night on this trip to NYC. Saturday was much more crowded. Sunday much less so, and quite pleasant for conversation. Had very good service on both evenings. On Saturday, the meals were delivered almost too quickly, probably in less than 15 minutes after we were seated. Glad to see that some items with a Southern touch have been added to the menu since we are not big beef eaters. Highly recommend the fried chicken! We were very sad to hear of Mesa Grill closing last year as this was our favorite restaurant in the city. However, we had very good experiences at B.A. and am sure we will return."

  • "Seriously, a well-modulated place with nice selections, well-made dishes and great service, all artfully presented in a very cool space. Couldn't ask for much more. Our server was just outstanding--in fact everyone we encountered was professional, polite and just generally pleasant to us. Next time I'm back in NY I wouldn't hesitate to visit again. Special recognition for the Manhattan clam chowdah--all the elements I could hope for: briny clam and tomato base with just the right amount of thyme--I could eat it all day (certainly beats the white goopy stuff that I never order where I live now)."

  • "The BEST meal i've ever had! Every bite is a revelation. The service was superb. An experience that i will remember forever."

  • "Really enjoyed our dinner, food was great, had a different take on things but worked well together. Ambience was nice. A little noisy and the table we were at was too close to the other tables. Staff was friendly and helpful. Would definetly go again."

  • "Loved the Mesa Grill in Vegas. Thought the same company would yield a wonderful meal and occasion (anniversary) at the Bar Americain in NYC. Wrong! Though I reserved weeks in advance, we got a table by the front door (endured the receptionists backsides). My steak was tough and chewy and every item had a sweet sauce on it - every item. Service was polite and quick."

  • "We have been to BA several times over the past few years. For the first time, we were rushed. You are asked if you have show plans, and we said no. But after getting a bottle of wine, 4 different people (our waiter + 3 others) kept stopping by and adding to our glasses. Typically they fill a red wine glass about 1/3, but the last server poured, saw there was an inch or two left in the bottle, and dumped it in my wife's glass, which was then an inch or so from the top. Having an $80 bottle of wine poured out before the appetizers are finished is obnoxious. It WAS a first disappointment; we hope it isn't repeated."

  • "From Scotch to espresso and everything in between it was wonderful a experience. My perfectly cooked NY Strip was tender and moist. The rub did not over power and although I am not a fan of anyone's steak sauce, it was nice that it came on the side, rather then drenching a great piece of meat. Spinach was not overcooked, tasty and enough in one side to feed the three of us. The raw oysters were cold, fresh, and yummy! My companions who had a ribeye, with the same enjoyment as my NY strip and the Red Snapper which was perfectly prepared and not over done were equally satisfied. The wine list is impressive and the wine steward was helpful, knowledgable and in no way condescending. Our waiter could not have been any more pleasant or patient"

  • "This Bobby Flay restaurant is a safe bet for a good dinner in Mid-Town. A bit pricey, but I do recommend it."

  • "Our waiter was attentive and courteous. Each entree in our group of four was delicious and beautifully presented on the plate. The Vidalia onion soup divine, as was my friend's crab and mashed avocado appetizer. The noise level was certainly vibrant when we arrived, but modulated as the early dinner crowd dispersed, allowing our dinner conversation to be pleasantly conducted. A wonderful experience!"

  • "Have been here many times and the food is always delicious. Of note, the creamed corn and corn bread/muffins. This time however we had a nice but oh so annoying server who hovered over us and kept trying to get us to order additional things. Ambiance is nice - big restaurant to lots of space and tables not overly close together."

  • "My wife and I have 4 children, so when we get the rare chance to go out we like to go to a fancier place like a Bobby Flay restaurant but thursday night was a shock. We were sat right behind the bar so I had people drinking, standing right over my shoulders. It was 7:30pm and they were already out of the days special, "blacked prime rib" . I got the rib eye blackened and it was over cooked and all I could taste was char. The waitress was more concerned with socializing than doing her job. My wife's ciappino ( seafood dish) came to the table with 3 mussels still closed and the waitress " forgot" the shell bowl, fork, and shell cracker. No manager ever came by to touch the table, or I would have told him or her myself."

  • "This is a perfect restaurant for pre or post theater dining. We were both in the mood for steak and thought we'd try the hanger steak. It was so flavorful and tender and absolutely cooked to perfection (med rare). Also tried the creamed corn - perfectly spiced - yum! Our waiter was very attentive without intruding. We were out in time for the theater and never felt rushed. Great spot for drinks, too."

  • "I WAS SO EXCITED TO FINALLY TRY BOBBY FLAY'S PLACE. AND MY EXPECTATIONS WERE TRULY EXCEEDED! MY COWORKERS AND I HAD AN AMAZING LUNCH. THE FOOD COULD NOT HAVE BEEN BETTER. AND THE SERVICE WAS OUTSTANDING!! OUR WAITRESS WAS PERFECT. SHE WAS SO SWEET AND SO HELPFUL. AND HER SERVICE WAS IMPECCABLE! HER NAME WAS AMANDA, SHE ROCKED! I CANNOT WAIT TO GO BACK. I HAVE RECOMMENDED BAR AMERICAIN TO EVERYONE I KNOW!"

  • "Went for weekday lunch. Busy place!! Excellent food and service - worth the $. I would highly recommend and skip the usual restaurant row suggestions. I went with high expectations and was not disappointed. Had shrimp and gritz, pot pie, cookie platter. All top notch!!!"

  • "This place was amazing. Food was great even though Bobby Flay was not there to oversee his kitchen. He can rest assured that it is up to his standards."

  • "My first trip to NYC. We decided to eat at this restaurant over all of the other famous ones. Money was no object. Our waiter couldn't recommend a wine & forgot our sides. Then he brought us a side that was "on the house" but appeared to have been sitting out for a while. One of us never got our side. Two of us ordered filet mignon cooked medium. They were both so raw they were not edible. It was a terrible experience. I am so disappointed we wasted our time & money at this place on our vacation. I will never return or recommend any of our friends to it either."

  • "Probably the best meal I've ever had. The food was outstanding and so was the service. I had the Miami porkchop and it was perfectly cooked, still a little pink inside. Most places don't understand how to cook pork. I was surprised how reasonably priced it was, too. I really don't have one negative comment. Next time I'm in the city I'll be going back for sure."

  • "My daughter and I ate here before the theater. It was wonderful. Had the snapper and shrimp and grits. Asparagus were to die for. We topped it off with a mini cherry pie. Service was excellent, waiters attentive. Would definitely come again. Reservations were really important."

  • "Enjoyed the meal- interesting choices in the brunch menu. But as we found with most New York restaurants, a little too salty for our taste. Otherwise than that, a place worth trying."

  • "I went to try Bobby Flay's food and it lived up to my expectations. This was perhaps the best I have ever had and while it is expensive it is worth every penny. Dinner was followed by Les Mis and this was one of the greatest evenings anyone could desire. I will go back whenever I am in Manhattan."

  • "It was our first time to try this restaurant out. So, we went there to celebrate my husband's birthday. We've ordered raw oysters and tuna tartar for our first course and they were great! The oysters were fresh and sweet and the tuna tartar was spicy but not too spicy to overwhelm the taste of the tuna. Our main course was the rib eye and it was one of the best that I've ever had. The staff were very attentive and helpful. The guy serving us was extremely good. We were the last patrons to leave that night and tje staff were very solicitous as both my husband and I had too much to drink already. My husband said that was one of the best birthday dinners he ever had. Thanks to the staff for making this a wonderful night!"

  • "If you're looking for a great place to grab some drinks and appetizers before you see a show in New York - this is a great spot. Non-touristy, gorgeous, tons of seating, great appetizers and drinks, good service. Maybe a little pricey - but what restaurant/bar isn't when you're on our way to a show? Loved the ambience, the food, and the noise level was perfectly acceptable. Check it out. Attended with three other friends, and made a reservation beforehand. Would suggest you do the same."

  • "I have been to this restaurant twice in the last three weeks and both times the appetizer was far better than the entree. Loved the tuna tartare and the Mexican pizza, but the fried chicken was just ok, not up to Mr Flay's reputation. Last night I had the Tuesday special which is a skillet chicken cutlet with triple cream (whatever that is) and ham. The ham was overly salt and tough and when I pushed it aside as unedible, it revealed two small dabs of the triple cream covering about 10% of the cutlet. The chicken itself was decent, but overall the dish was not much better than a diner would serve. I will not be back anytime soon. Bobby needs to keep an eye on his empire."

  • "Midtown Manhattan. A Bobby Flay restaurant with good service and food. Sophisticated dining in a casual atmosphere...tables for two are painfully small! The homemade potato chips with blue cheese dipping sauce were great! We would definitely return when visiting NYC."

  • "In NYC there are tons of great restaurants. We were initially excited to try Bar Americain, but we had poor service...waiting for beverages and our check and on top of it all the food was only ok. We had much better food on the lower east side with much better ambieance. Not worth the cost."

  • "My first trip to New York City and wanted to dine at one of Bobby Flay's restaurants. I am the king of the BBQ back home in Toronto within my group of friends. But Wow! The service was the best ever! And the food was outstandingly amazing! The flavors just blend so well it will make you drool while eating! Best meal ever!! Will make my trip to New York City unforgettable! Loved it!!!"

  • "I had read quire a few reviews on the restaurant before we decided to go. The ambience was great. The wait staff was awesome. Very attentive and friendly. Very good service. The food was OK. We order the grilled pizza for appetizer. It was good...nice flavor, but oily.I order the red snapper. It was flaky, not dry but bland. My nice had the rabbit. She said it was a little dry but the drizzle helped a lot. My fiancée order the seafood market which was lobster, mussels and fish in a spicy tomato sauce. That was probably the best meal. The spicy broth was just right. The fish was cooked perfect in this dish. For dessert we order the strawberry soufflé and the German chocolate. The souffle was warm and sweet. The cake was very rich."
