Diner Reviews
  • "Filet Mignon tasted fine but was quite small for $44. NY Strip was overcooked at one end and almost raw at the other, gristle in places, some parts tender some very tough. Overall quite a disappointment, poor value."

  • "The atmosphere was nice. The service was fantastic! My husband enjoyed his steak-someone else enjoyed their pork chops. I order the only fish on the menu...to me it was just ok. Was expecting it to be a lot better. The soufflé was amazing! Overall the service is what made it! The food was ok!"

  • "In NYC there are tons of great restaurants. We were initially excited to try Bar Americain, but we had poor service...waiting for beverages and our check and on top of it all the food was only ok. We had much better food on the lower east side with much better ambieance. Not worth the cost."

  • "Lovely, ever present, accommodating staff. I enjoyed my food -- though I wasn't hungry enough to indulge. The parental units enjoyed every bite. Special shout out to the cherry pie."

  • "The meal was awesome as always. One of our favorite restaurants when we go into the City. The wait staff very pleasant and attentive. Also you do not feel rushed with the dining experience."

  • "We had amazing service from everyone we encountered. The food was outstanding. Did I say outstanding.....everything from the bacon pizza to the fish cioppino to the delish cherry tart. The only complaint was that the restaurant was only half filled, which means the ambiance wasn't so great and the people who were there seemed to be tourists. I like to dine in a restaurant that has buzz, where people are excited to be there. This was a Wednesday night between 6 and 8PM, typically a busy time. I might return if I am going to the theatre and there aren't other good options available that night."

  • "We love Bobby Flay but... -Flat tonic in the drinks -Under and over seasoned appetizers -Poorly shucked oysters -Terribly assembled salad -Dry, luke warm main course NO ONE IS PAYING ATTENTION BOBBY!"

  • "I had read quire a few reviews on the restaurant before we decided to go. The ambience was great. The wait staff was awesome. Very attentive and friendly. Very good service. The food was OK. We order the grilled pizza for appetizer. It was good...nice flavor, but oily.I order the red snapper. It was flaky, not dry but bland. My nice had the rabbit. She said it was a little dry but the drizzle helped a lot. My fiancée order the seafood market which was lobster, mussels and fish in a spicy tomato sauce. That was probably the best meal. The spicy broth was just right. The fish was cooked perfect in this dish. For dessert we order the strawberry soufflé and the German chocolate. The souffle was warm and sweet. The cake was very rich."

  • "Still going strong, this midtowner hits all the right notes, from the friendly welcome to the excellent service and sublime food. Don't miss the pistachio profiteroles for dessert!"

  • "In a city with so many choices, save your money and eat elsewhere. The overall experience was underwhelming and overpriced. The food was ok...but not memorable. There were 5 in our party so we were all able to see and sample an assortment of menu offerings, including several sides. Nothing we ordered stood out as exceptional."

  • "Great food, great service. We enjoyed it immensely."

  • "Nice time. Enjoyed the experience. The ribeye was fantastic and so was the fried chicken. The pork chop on the other hand was raw in the middle. Not rare but raw and inedible."

  • "My mother and I had lunch here. The raw bar items are delicious. She enjoyed her oysters and I enjoyed the sea scallops and salmon crudo. The onion soup was so salty that my mother could not eat it. She loves salt and she could not eat it. That was the only disappointing thing. The wine was good and the waiter was fantastic. I love the energy and feel of the place. My husband and I enjoy eating here. I don't know what happened to the soup that day. That is unusual."

  • "Wonderful food and great service add up to a wonderful dining experience. Enjoyed the Bobby Flay take in the traditional American fare. Great space, loved the balcony view and found the bar to be professional, lively and fun."

  • "Good ambience & nice, understated decor. Appetizer sampler of shrimp tomatillo, lobster & crab selections were exquisite. I wish I could say the same about the filet. It had a charred outside and was flavorful but not worthy of the 44.00 price tag when compared to others that I have had at different restaurants. It lacked the juicy tenderness associated with a filet. The mashed potatoes and asparagus were good, not great. Sides are a la carte. Wines were excellent as was the service. I know Bobby is not the one in the kitchen cooking, but truly expected a more outstanding meal."

  • "It was just okay - would not make a special trip there - the flavors are just uneventful"

  • "This was my second visit so I brought friends. I was embarrassed by how pedestrian the meal was. My husband's fish was undercooked, mine was tasteless and my friend's pork chop was tough. The spinach under the fish was the best part of the meal. Service was cursory. I won't go back - there are much better restaurants at more reasonable prices nearby."

  • "Good food, cool music, lovely room. Some flavors are weird - did not see the hot/sweet mustard on the menu with my superb fried chicken - but, I guess, the server should have warned me! Note to diners: Only one piece of seriously tasty cornbread is offered per person. Make sure the bread basket gets passed!"

  • "My husband, step son and I enjoyed dinner at BA on our last night in NYC. First of all, let me say that we are from Louisville KY, a wonderful food city with an amazing amount of local/independent restaurant choices. Our server was very attentive without being intrusive and explained food and drink options. The bread basket was a hit with the corn sticks especially---remember, we are from KY! My husband had the lamb loin, charred carrots and quinoa/pea dish. My step son had the Philly inspired steak. I had the rabbit with corn pudding and kale. Our cocktails were great as was our wine choice. For dessert, we shared the German chocolate cake and it was impressive. If we are ever back in NYC, we will definitely return for a meal."

  • "We enjoyed the experience, but a filet was terribly overcooked, and of poor quality otherwise, so we sent it back. the waiter was most accommodating and the replacement was deliciousl"

  • "WE STAYED AT THE SHERATON NEW YORK AT TIMES SQUARE SO IT WAS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER. WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE IF IT FACED 7TH BECAUSE MY WIFE LOVES TO PEOPLE WATCH. FOOD WAS EXPENSIVE BUT WELL WORTH IT. WINE LIST WAS HUGE BUT I DRINK G AND T'S AND BEER SO IT DIDN'T BOTHER ME."

  • "Just not great, either. Our server seemed rushed and really seemed like he was trying to turn over the table. We were in a more relaxed mode. Seafood sampler appetizer was excellent. Main course ribeye was very good, just not anything special. I find Mesa Grill more interesting in terms of typical Bobby Flay spices/tastes."

  • "My boyfriend and I are huge fans of Bobby Flay. We live in Cleveland, so unfortunately we've never been able to eat at one of his restaurants. Luckily, this past weekend we vacationed in New York City and immediately booked a reservation at Bar Americain. The whole experience was superb. The food was probably the best meals we've ever eaten. The entire wait staff was quick and extremely attentive. The tables were a bit close together but far enough apart that we could still have our own private conversation. We ordered the creme brulee for dessert which was delicious! Fingers crossed that Bobby will one day open up a restaurant in Cleveland!"

  • "We brought our relatives from Georgia there for dinner. Our waiter was excellent and very helpful describing the menu choices. All our food was very well prepared and delicious. We would absolutely go there again! P.S. the Onion Soup was one of the best I've ever had!!"

  • "We were glad to have arrived early, as Bar Americain was relatively empty (we had to take a 5:15 reservation because all later times were booked). Seated next to the service area, we were mesmerized by the action - it was entertaining rather than intrusive and made it crystal clear why service was so good. The food was inventive and generally good. We concentrated on seafood and were not disappointed. The bill was higher than we expected - including 3 drinks, 2 apps, 2 moderately priced entrees and one dessert with 2 espressos, it was $225 for two (with tip and tax). Might give us pause in the future even though it was so convenient to our theater."

  • "We had an early reservation and started off with drinks in the bar. Innovative drink options and great ambiance. The waitress was knowledgeable and efficient. Food was outstanding but we were too full to enjoy our side dishes or dessert. Everything is a la carte."

  • "We found Bar Americain a bit disappointing. Usually Bobby Flay's restaurants are fabulous but our lunch was not. The food was incredibly salty (we had to send things back), our entrees took almost 45 minutes after the appetizers, and the service was not what one would expect at a nice restaurant. The waiter did not give us a taste of the bottle of wine we ordered before pouring full glasses, was not knowledgable on the menu, and was perfunctory in his service. However, the raw bar was delicious and most of the food was flavorful and delicious once it finally came. Not a restaurant we will jump at the chance to return but will potentially give in another chance in a few months or so."

  • "It's a bit expensive but if you can get past that I recommend a visit. Dinner for three with drinks apetizer and dessert ended up at $300.00. But I would do it again!"

  • "Really enjoyed the food and ambience at Bar Americain. It looks a little weathered in places, but overall has a nice vibe and great food. The deviled eggs are amazing. We took a couple clients out to lunch recently and everyone loved their dishes. Nothing too fancy -- just gourmet enough to be unique but not off-putting. Waitress was really friendly and attentive to our needs. Thanks!"

  • "We had a great brunch at Bar Americain. They were extremely friendly and tolerant of our toddler who was not on her best behavior. we ordered Chicken Pot pie, which was a great take on an american classic. the cobb salads were tasty, and the sides of fries and bacon went over well. Wash that down with some Kentucky beer, and finish it off with a chocolate dessert and you've got yourself a perfect brunch!"

  • "The food was very good but, for some reason, all of our meals were only warm. It seemed as though they had been in a holding cabinet before being served. Although the restaurant was not very crowded at the time, it puzzled us as to why the food wasn't served hot out of the kitchen."

  • "First and foremost....I am a big fan of anything Bobby Flay - my husband and I celebrated our 20th Wedding Anniversary by taking a trip from Kelowna BC Canada to NYC - our first dinner out was at Bar Americain! Everything was as expected and more! We came back a second time during our trip as we thought we would be remiss if we left without trying more things on the menu. Totally got he NYC experience in casual/fine dining - great atmosphere, food and service. Loved the hustle and bustle in the restaurant - being a native of NYC it was great evening! My Canadian hubby said he felt like a New Yorker!! We ALWAYS go to Mesa Grill in Vegas every time we are there and love it too! Bobby Flay just doesn't disappoint!!"
