Afghan cuisine at Bamiyan Restaurant is a collection of authentic traditional recipes, a blend of tastes, which are exotic. Afghanistan is a land-locked country, and cooks rely on meats,
freshwater fish, vegetables, dried peas, beans, fresh and dried fruits, yogurt, noodles, rice, and a distinctive palette of seasonings. Afghans do not use butter or heavy cream in their cooking. Vegetable oil, corn oil or olive oil are used for cooking.In almost all the recipes in Afghan cooking, a small amount of herbs, spices and seasonings are used to flavor the dish and add a sensational taste, not too overwhelming.

  • "This is a family-owned restaurant in an aging strip mall in a modest commercial stretch in Citrus Heights. We went there for convenience but our expectaions were not too high; in the end we were pleasantly surprised. The Afghan cuisine was inventive and carefully prepared, especially the side dishes, bread and sauces. The slow service is likely the product of individual fresh preparation and a couple of large tables that came in just ahead of us. Nonetheless, I would anticipate a leisurely dinner but good, nourishing food in healthy proportions. "

  • "My husband and I enjoyed a fabulous meal here. We had almost forgotten about this place (possibly because we had bad service at the EDH location 4-5 yrs ago) but we were glad to find it on Open Table and get in for what was a last minute dinner for 2 on Valentine's Day weekend. We had the Mantoo as an appetizer and then we each had a lamb entree. While the meat was prepared to perfection, the eggplant and pumpkin side dishes are the real draw. If you are adventurous with food you will love the Afghani cuisine. They do have a decent variety of wines but if you like to bring your own (we did) you can pay a nominal corkage fee. As another reviewer said the location in Citrus Heights is quiet and easy to miss if you don't have the address."

  • "Delicious food! We did go on valentines day so the service was pretty slow. Plenty of wines but food was delicious. Tried the pumpkin and spinach rice with chicken kahbab and I could have taken another order to go. They have on the floor seating which looked really fun."

  • "Hidden away right in front of us! Located in a somewhat dark and rundown shopping strip on Greenback. We live about three blocks away and never noticed Bamiyan was even there. Just stumbled upon it on Open Table. What an incredible find. Warm, friendly neighborhood spot with FANTASTIC food. While the shopping mall Bamiyan is located in is kind of run down, the restaurant itself is charmingly decorated in Afghani theme, cozy and spotlessly clean. It is all delicious but do not miss the eggplant! And the special hot tea was a real treat! And the people were so nice and helpful in migrating the menu. ; )"

  • "What a gem! I can't eat anything spicy or with pepper. The first time I went I didn't know it would be spicy. I called ahead the next week (I adore Afghani food), and asked if the meals could be prepared without pepper. My two favorite items are eggplant and Mantoo. The waitress personally prepared a special sauce that was mild and still delicious. I will frequent this restaurant and recommend it highly as a special place to dine. As a bonus, make sure you order the custard for dessert. Very light and refreshing."

  • "We are searching for good, inexpensive reatusrants and when we read the glowing reviews for Bamiyan, we were excited. We expected something special in terms of the food (we don't care about decor, fancy presentation, etc). In reality, it was not bad, but not great, either. My lamb, described as "juicy" on the menu, was actually dry. The pumpkin that accompanied my wife's chicken was sweet enough to be a dessert. Overall, the food was lacking in vibrancy and freshness. We each ordered an entree and we shared an appetizer, and, with tip, spent over $ 50.00. I'd say the meal was worth about $ 35.00. There was only one wait-person and service felt distracted. We were disappointed and won't be going back."

  • "Bamiyan Citrus Heights is in a strip mall. If I hadn't read reviews of their food I probably never would have stopped there. The place is clean, but looks like more of a Country Kitchen than a fine dining place. The food is very flavorful, but priced more like fine dining than coffee shop. The lamb kabob was wonderful, as was my husband's combo kabob (chicken/beef and lamb) and the pumpkin puree was terrific. I have had better Samosas elsewhere. We were there fairly early (6:30pm) so that may have been why it was so quiet, but it was still quiet when we left. It is well worth searching it out if you have a craving for middle eastern food."

  • "I went for a special event on a Saturday night. They had a live band and that was my reason for going; so I can't judge their normal atmosphere, but the food was awesome. I sat by myself and the staff was very attentive. I ordered the Chicken Shammi Kebab with brown rice & squash; it was spicy for me (I'm fairly unexperienced when it comes to spicy flavors), but delicious. They also gave me afghan bread & dipping mixture, not sure what was in the dip, but it was really good. I also had the House Dessert, which was absolutely divine, but the portion size was not worth the price I paid for it."

  • "The service was attentive and the food was delicious. Luckily we had an early dinner and were one of just a few people dining, so everything was very quiet. As we were finishing up a HUGE group came in (I think for a special occasion) so the noise level was probably louder after we left! We will definitely be coming back to try more dishes! Don't let the strip mall location fool you - inside it was very nice and the food was well worth it."

I had asked for a place for 8 people, and, after some minutes, shown to a place set for 13. Then, it took a while for the staff to begin serving us. This was not my first time at Bamiyan, but this was the first time that has happened. Apparently, some miscommunication had occurred."

  • "Our server had no clue how to use Open Table. She asked the only other server there and she said her husband would do it eventually. Several days later, I got my points. The food was quite bland compared to Indian Curries but very tasty. I'm not sure if we'll go back. Maybe to try something different."
