A word from Ballard Annex Oyster House
The Ballard Annex Oyster House serves fresh NW seafood (we might sneak somethings over from the East Coast, I'm lookin' at you Maine Lobster!) seven days a week. We've always got 8 types of oysters behind the bar -where we serve a variety draft wines & beers, bubbles, and specialty cocktails- you'll also find us steaming house made chowders, bisques, and shellfish in our stainless steam kettles. Feelin' picky? Whole Dungeness Crab and the aforementioned lobster are also available to crack at the table.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The Oysters were great, the fish and chips were okay and greasy. They left the door open which made it cold inside and the music they played was loud and full of beat which is not great when you actually want to enjoy the food. Also the acoustics are hard, lots of cement and so sound and hearing is problem, do go if you actually want to talk to someone. Great wait person and the oysters were wonderful!"

  • "While the service was fine, and the restaurant itself was very cute, half of our table really didn't enjoy our food. The oysters were good, but way too expensive. My lobster ravioli was almost inedible. The sauce was incredibly sweet, and it completely overpowered the dish. Their crab roll was pretty bland, and by far, the best part about that meal was the fries. The fish and chips were the best meal at the table. The trout was good, but the waitress told us that came with fries as well, but it didn't. When asked if my friend wanted fries also, she said yes. It took about 20 minutes to get the fries, at which point we just cancelled the order. I wouldn't say this was a terrible experience, but with very hit or miss food, I wouldn't go back"

  • "Slow service on the night we were there, but nice seafood options. The trout was great, as was the oysters Rockefeller and the Muscles Pistiou."

  • "Appetizers Caesar Salad with Anchovies=Anchovies were not too salty and there was a perfect amount of dressing to lettuce ratio. The three pieces of garlic and herb bread that came with it was tasty, but too hard...maybe even stale. Mussels Pistou=Great garlic and cheese flavor. Main Fish & Chips=Batter on the fish was crispy & chewy. The pickle/dill sauce was much more refreshing than tartar sauce. Fries were salted and crunchy on the outside yet tender on the inside. Fried Oyster Roll=Okay. Deep fried oysters on a roll with cabbage slaw. Simple. Dessert Apple crumble=Okay. The top could have used more time under the broiler. Creme Brulee=The creme was not custard at all...more like a sauce. The brulee part came out well."

  • "Great for shellfish, but if someone in your party is not a fan, there are a few other options. Good service. Loud inside. Parking is a nightmare (nothing new there!)."

  • "Service and food were uninspired. Not good. Way too much cheese on the mussels pistou and the oysters rockerfeller. Sockeye overcooked. Mashed potatoes not as good as grandmas. Desserts no even so-so. The 5 dollar glass of wine was the only enjoyable part of the meal. We won't be returning."

  • "The oyster are great and fresh! That's the best thing on my list. I went for Dine around Seattle lunch. The "Mussels Pistou" is way too dry and overcook. The "Clam Linguini" are good; the clam is fresh and sweet but linguini just ok (does not feel like their strong suite). "Vanilla Bean Crème Brulee" for dessert; just ok. Overall, the only I would want to order again is the oyster. The service is a bit slow; I have to asked for check and water multiple times to get it."

  • "Went to the Annex for dinner before going in the backroom for PaintNite. Nice atmosphere. Had my first fried oyster roll. Very good. We would come back. We had not been to Ballard in years and parking even on a Wednesday night was a bit frustrating."

  • "We went for date night because of Dine-In Seattle and were pleasantly surprised. We hadn't been to the Annex because of the meal pricing and so decided this would be our opportunity to get our money's worth. We didn't get to have any of the oysters but the food we did have was delicious. Everything from chowder to dessert was tasty and all that Dine-in it seemed worth it. The service was great too and we had a very attentive server. However we were there on a Monday night which might not be indicative of service quality on busier days of the week. Overall we left happy with the experience, however we probably will not be going back unless we can get another deal."

  • "This place was OK for the 3 courses for $30 dine around Seattle deal, but I wouldn't come back and pay full price. Food was all good, but not amazing, and for the prices, I would definitely dine elsewhere. Service was very poorly timed. We ordered drinks, then waited a little and ordered dinner. Yet, when the appetizers came, our drinks still had not arrived, and she rushed over to get them (she said the bar was backed up, but the restaurant was mostly empty). Then, we were still nibbling at the remains of our appetizers when the main course showed up. Luckily we hadn't ordered dessert at the beginning, so that left us a little time between mains and dessert."

  • "Went for dinner but think the real gem is happy hour. Oysters were good, wine prices were reasonable. Food was underwhelming and a little pricey for the quality (outside of the Dine Around Seattle menu). I'll be back for happy hour or maybe a weekend lunch."

  • "Waitress was very sweet but slow, the bartender was not a pleasant man and my bf 5 year old was with us. I felt as if he didn't seat us due to fact that we had a child with us. They never confirmed my open table reservation, it was very expensive and fur no good reason. I was not impressed at all.. I didn't have the oysters they looked good but I won't be going back there, there are many more better deserving restaurants to spend my hard earned cash"

  • "Had the dine about seattle lunch and the food was awesome, especially the mussels pistou...to die for. Service was excellent. Had the fish and chips, was so good but the fries were way too salty..I had to drive a gallon of water all afternoon,"

  • "the oysters were alright, and the maryland crab cake was outstanding. other than that, the food was pretty poor. the linguini with clams had way too much garlic, and the clams weren't particularly tasty. the lobster ravioli had very little lobster in it, and the portion was tiny. i wouldn't go back."

  • "My wife n I love seafood.. Especially oysters that's why we chose this place to try. The food was actually pretty good. Except the service not good. Our server was not helpful, no smile which she did not engaged with us and I had to ask for bread. Which came after our meal. I think it's food runner but she was way more nice n thought she be a better server than ours"

  • "We had the worst service I can ever recall. The restaurant was not busy, yet it took us almost 3 hours to get appetizers and dinner. It took approximately 20 minutes for the waiter to acknowledge us, and another 15 to get beers. When we were finally served our oysters, the food was served on dirty dishes. We didn't bother telling the waiter about this because we knew we wouldn't see him for 30 minutes. The restaurant was freezing inside, and I wore my down jacket the entire evening."

  • "The wine list was pretty weak. My friend had to explain how make a pretty commonplace cocktail. The oysters were wonderfully fresh, but inexpertly shucked (in three dozen, virtuAlly every one had shards of shell). We actually had to salt the clam chowder. And even thn, it was just OK. The Caesar salad was a real standout, with excellent white anchovies. But the croutons were over seasoned. The wait staff were very nice, as we're the shuckers and managers. I'd go back, but if I'm hankering for oysters , well, The Walrus is just down the street."

  • "My husband I went to Ballard Annex Oyster House a couple of weeks ago for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed it. The waiter was nice, but a little off his game. He forgot to order my husband's caesar salad. It wasn't a big deal, though. The salad came eventually, and it was comped on the bill. It's noisy in there on a full night, but the atmosphere is friendly. The food was great. I can't recall anything negative about it. Highlights were the oysters, geoduck chowder, and the apple pie. We'll go back!"

  • "Food was ok, but not at the level I had suspected it would be, given the location and the buildout of the space. Bread was a clear afterthought, ceasar salad "crotons" were uneatable. Broccoli side was dry and tasteless, french fries, while some were good, it was like we got the bottom of the bag of chips and those were so hard, we didn't eat them...and I love french fries. Oysters were good and the server was knowledgeable. Service was lackluster. I waited 10 min. for a cocktail that never came because they ran out of rum. There was no sense of urgency or real concern in our experience exhibited. Plates weren't picked up in timely manner."

  • "Table was ready for us upon arrival, which was nice. Wait staff seemed understaffed and not thrilled to be working. They were out of our first two selections or our white wine, had to move up to the next price tier with no accommodation made by the restaurant. Out of one...understandable, out of two, unacceptable. And a very thin wine selection to begin with! Food was good, not great. Atmosphere of the restaurant is nice, very vibrant. Don't expect quiet and romantic here!"

  • "Nice place to eat- nothing spectacular but their Steam Pots - are amazing- everything succulent and large pieces of shellfish. The crab cake (East) style was lacking and not really representative of Maryland Crabcakes- the West version was just dungeness crab… Service was Great- very attentive and cordial-"

  • "We recently dined at Ballard Annex Oyster House for New Years Eve. Two of the people in our party order the pre fix dinner with wine pairings and the other two ordered the Filet Oscar. We had to wait 20 minutes for our first drinks, which I understand, it was New Years Eve and the bar must have been backed up, but it was still a long wait. All of the food was amazing, but most of the time we didn't get our wine pairings till after we were almost finished with our course. Our waiter seemed really flustered, but was nice. That was a little disappointing. I would still love to come back and dine with Ballard Annex again, but maybe not come on a busy night."

  • "The restaurant was too bright. Seemed not so sophisticated. The food was very good but very expensive for steaming Dungeness and shucking raw oysters. The ambiance was more college like than professional. Great music but not clear over the din of clinking dish ware. Just not our thing but could see how others would like."

  • "Great food & service, just needs a few more heaters it was so cold no one even took off their jackets (Dec 2013). Same theme earlier this summer (Aug 2013) when the A/C was blasting. Not sure if it is a requirement to keep both the oysters cold as well as the customers but if u can bear the temp it is worth eating here."

  • "Discovered the annex during Ballard seafood Fest, but did not eat there. Finally went after a show downtown - we remembered the name. I had lobster bisque and a ceasar salad with four oysters - all great. My wife had bisque and trout - again excellent. Lovely atmosphere, good service and great food. Will definitely return."

  • "For his birthday, my boyfriend and I had a great experience with our friends at the Annex Oyster House. As a seafoodie from Boston, he was BLOWN AWAY by the variety of oysters available as well as the other shellfish in Willy's Bucket. We all enjoyed the fresh, tender baby octopus and the old bay fries. Choice of bar selections was outstanding--they actually had Buffalo Trace! Our waitress was phenomenal and gave us the perfect amount of attention. She didn't smother us, but she didn't forget us either. It was just right. Fantastic evening. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants quality oysters in a nice oyster house without needing to dress to the nines and without the pretense."

  • "The waiter knew nothing about the wine list, didn't tell us anything about the menu or restaurant when he greeted us. He was slow to take our orders. The food was average. I had the shrimp scampi and the risotto it comes with was completely bland. Very disappointing."

  • "They had a lot of regional oysters Hama Hama, Olympia, etc. and a few I hadn't heard of. They have a daily special and Sunday's include a nice bouilbaisse which had a lot seafood including shellfish and salmon. Very filling! Order the french bread to dip into the soup. My husband had the pan seared salmon which had a lot of flavor. The menu includes fried oysters, crab cakes, lobster rolls, halibut fish and chips, salads, clam chowder, lobster bisque so there is something for everyone. Will bring frends and family here."

  • "If you are looking for fresh seafood prepared simply with great attention to detail, this is the place for you. Add to that, bartenders who know how to pair wines and mix great drinks, and you will be very happy. Don't forget to get a dozen oysters. And, the whole lobster is phenomenal. The scallops were seared perfectly, and the trout was divine. The made to order soups at the bar add a Wow factor."

  • "The Oysters were the best I've ever had! Lots of variation, all fresh and delectable! Prawn cocktail was outstanding, too! Service was very friendly and informative. Caution: cocktails and beers were expensive! Definitely going back, just won't drink as much! ha"

  • "This was a treat of an evening. We dined with a couple of friends who also love oysters and beverages. The oysters were amazing, Ramon, our server, was so on top of everything. The dishes were original but accessible - so flavorful, just the right portions. The Gooey duck chowder out of this world. My brother is an oyster and gooey duck farmer - we will be back with him in tow soon!"

  • "Had a fabulous lunch of raw oysters, salad, chowder and champagne. The service was outstanding, friendly, knowledgable...just the right amount of engagement without hovering. The oyster selection was eclectic and so very local and fresh. Had an impeccably cooked filet of wild sockeye as an accompaniment to the Caesar salad. My wife had a lovely crab cake and lobster bisque. We will return again and again."

  • "Visited on a Friday night with 4 of my friends, all ~30ish years old and familiar with the Ballard foodie scene. Restaurant was about 60% full, and the noise was energetic without being overwhelming. Service was appropriately paced, friendly, and informative. The food, however, wasn't quite what I had hoped for. Everyone at the table ordered usual items, like a Spring Green Salad, Scallops, Rockfish, Lobster Roll, Clam Linguine, Oysters, etc. Everything was cooked well, nicely plated, but lacked flavor and POP!. We all left feeling just OK about the experience, and probably won't return. Bummer, because the space itself is beautiful and well located."
