Diner Reviews
  • "Atmosphere was great. Food was ok with fish tasting a little stale and overcooked. Not bad enough to send back but a good kitchen should have noticed. Went there for the view and drinks but expected a little more from the food. Portions were smaller than expected."

  • "We had the most awesome time! From the service to the food to the breath taking view. I made the reservation online asking for a window view and it was fullfilled. The food was to die for. We really had a wonderful time. We will be back! Thank you again!!"

  • "There were 4 of us and the one that got the steak was happy with his but the Sweet and sour chicken was tasteless and so was another persons dish but I don't remember what it was. We were on vacation . wont be back."

  • "This was our second visit here and the food was great on both occasions. We have dietary restrictions and they were accommodating. Highly recommend"

  • "Bali hai is perfect as the go to restaurant before (or after) a show at Humphrey's. The food is Polynesian and delicious. I had the duck dish with bacon fried rice. My wife had the shrimp appetizer. Both dishes got great reviews. We would definitely recommend this restaurant to our best friends."

  • "Great service and amazing menu. Overlooks the water with plenty of parking. Portions are a good size and full of flavor. Drinks are also amazing. Great prices for such quality selections."

  • "Some items were served hot, others cool for our group of 12. The Calamari was almost cold, not good when you eat fried food. Good size portion though. Drinks were priced right, food items a bit expensive, all ala carte. Some fish portions very small, over cooked, just so, so. The worst were the crab cakes, fried dough balls. Small serving for price, not enough crab texture. The peppers were the best. Mai Tai excellent."

  • "Your resturant and staff were wonderful. It was our wedding anniversary and the table by the window was awesome and when we arrived the hostesses wished us happy anniversary and that was nice. The staff was thoughtful and they served us a little chocolate dessert for our anniversary. I have already recommended your resturant to alot of our friends. Thanks for making our evening perfect."

  • "Normally sitting out on the terrace & having Sunday Brunch at Bali Hai is FANTASTIC. This particular day in Sep-2014, it was just TOO HOT so we went inside; it was still HOT sitting next to the glass. The view is really excellent though. The variety of food is abundant...fresh fruit, fresh salads, breakfast classics including Eggs Benedict & waffles & breakfast potatoes & more; chicken & pulled pork & multiple ribs & crabs legs & shrimp & sliced to order roast beef & an omelet bar & fritattas & more; breakfast pastries & more desert items than should be allowed; coffee & ice water, juices (orange, cranberry, apple?) & free flowing champagne (if you are old enough)...take a walk along the water afterwards & enjoy the view & the breeze!!!"

  • "We brought two visitors from New York to experience the spectacular view from the Bali Hai. However, we were pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. All four of us had different dishes and it was all delicious. The total experience was outstanding and our friends really enjoyed it. We would highly recommend Bali Hai."

  • "I actually wasn't expecting much other than the view, but the food was quite excellent. The brussel sprouts were spectacular. Also had the wok fried bass and halibut. Both were very good."

  • "Was so excited to try this place out for our 19th Anniversary lunch. Scenic view but the lunch menu was limited and the food was cold. Ordered the tempura fried crab balls, presentation was good but it was cold inside. Shrimp skewers were cold, not cooked all the way. Salmon was tasteless and a bit overcooked. Don't think I will come back except for the view. Tummy didn't feel well after eating here. I suspect the shrimp or crab cakes."

  • "Gorgeous site. Ahi burger was so-so, tacos were reported to be very good. Service is very good also.. Its proximity to Humphreys and concerts makes it ideal for pre show dinner. View makes up for deficiencies..."

  • "Wow! My girlfriend and I are from LA and we came on vacation to the beautiful San Diego. This place was breathtaking. Our brunch was the total package. Beautiful scenic view, endless drinks, and great food! We couldn't have asked for better. Thumbs up."

  • "I've only been to the Bali Hai for their Sunday Brunch, but it is awesome. They are right on the water on shelter island with great views of Downtown, the bay, and all the water based entertainment to go along with the area. With the bottomless champagne and several juice choices the mimosas keep flowing. The food, for a brunch is outstanding. I'm a huge fan of their Eggs Benedict choices. On busier days the service can be a little slower, but that's to be expected. It definitely doesn't detract from the experience, I just love my mimosas! On non busy days, the servers are super attentive and have great personalities and attitudes. I highly recommend them, especially for their Sunday Brunch, it's one of the best in town!"

  • "This place was hopping! Three special events and many, many full tables. The salmon was tasty and moist. The service was excellent. But the noise level is very, very high. Hard to hear table talk."

  • "I got a last minute reservation and didn't request a table by the window so I was a little disappointed with the lack of a view. The waiter also seemed stretched a little thin."

  • "Scenic views are wonderful. Service was great, friendly, and attentive. We had lunch which was well prepared, not expensive. Un sweeted ice tea was outstanding. Very nice spot. I am from NYC but would make sure I dine again when I return to San Digeo."

  • "The mixed grill plate for lunch was great. The ribs came right off the bone and the sweet chilli sauce was delicious with the right amout of heat. The Hurricane with ist strawberry passion fruit puree was delicious - like a freeze with a good kick to it. The sweet and sour chicken was also great with the right amount of sweetness and crunch for the vegetables and fresh pineapple. The view of San Diego Bay was spectacular especially for viewing the parade of the tall ships. The burger hit the spot - really good and the fries were crispy. Great place to eat! spectabular"

  • "Came here on our first date and returned for our anniversary. Making a reservation online was so convenient and quick and the comments section allowed me to request a table outside as that is where we sat on our first date. We were running late (as we often do) so we phoned ahead to move the reservation back, twice. Both times the girl that answered the phone was totally pleasant and accommodating. We got sat outside, got great, friendly, prompt service, our food was all amazing and our drinks were delicious. Our server was on point offering dessert and such, and refilling coffee. He even took a picture for us. Will be back for our next one!"

  • "You can't beat the Bali Hai for gorgeous sunset views of the bay! The golden sunlight reflecting off the tall buildings downtown. The brilliant colors on the water as the boats and birds to by. We even saw sea lions surfacing very close by! Josh gave us excellent service and everyone referenced the special occasion we were celebrating. The Mai Tai will knock your socks off. Sourdough bread and calamari were delicious. Generous portions. Fun drink menu. Request a window table, but your best bet to secure one is to call a week in advance."

  • "It was our first stay in San Diego and Bali Hai ... it couldn´t be a better start! All people are very friendly and the ambience is wow! Only the food could be a little more hotter and the vegtables could be more coocked. But it was a wonderful evening!"

  • "The evening for my guests was great. Food , very good, ....but, especially the steamed vegetables! I had intended to write if the chef woukd share his methods. Most that I have experienced are overdone and soggy, or, almost raw....that night they were great."

  • "We go to the Bali Hai as much as possible, this was another great experience as well. Love the seafood, the hospitality team, and view, and of course the desserts. Always recommend the Bali Hai for an affordable and memorable date."

  • "Pacific Rim food selection. Tuna Poke is our all time favorite. My dish was halibut with papya chutney in a blood orange rendered sauce. Side included fried rice and wok'd vegetables. Great view too."

  • "My mother had the stir fry which she said was "very ordinary." I had the sea bass that the waiter recommended and I thought it was very dry and unflavorful. Overall I thought the food was much worse than normal. What saves this place is the location and view. Food really needs to improve. Also, I think the drink menu needs updating. Drinks don't have much flavor--you should go to Roy's in La Jolla and try their mai tai. I think your bar could do a much better job."

  • "This wasn't the first time I've been to Bali Hai, but it was my wife's first experience. We got a seat by the massive windows, and the view of the skyline and bay was great. We were even treated to seeing sea lions play in the water below. The food was adequate. I ordered the ahi tuna and, while it was good, I should have ordered something more substantial. There was about 8 pieces of tuna, and each one was a single bite. Had I known the size of the order, I would have chosen otherwise. The mashed potatoes were perfect; just the right lumpiness. The service was attentive, and we were even given a little complimentary dessert to celebrate my wife's birthday. We'll go back again, and the next time I'll get the steak."

  • "While the service was pretty good, the food was average or below. We used to really enjoy the Polynesian menu from many years ago visited often. This experience confirmed our last visit of about five years ago. We do not need to visit any more."

  • "I have been coming to and enjoying the Bali Hai Restaurant for more than 50 years, since I was a little kid. First with my parents and sister and now with my own family, wife and son. Everything about the Bali Hai is Magnificent. The Menu, The Drinks, The Service, The Atmosphere, The Cleanliness, The Perfect Location on the bay, and many other great reasons that keep me returning from Los Angeles to enjoy a Superb Dining Experience. The parking is even excellent My Number One Choice for dining in San Diego."

  • "We had a wonderful time for our 40th Anniversary last Sunday the 17th of August. The food was outstanding, the service over the top and of course the view is always one to cherish. Thank you for making our anniversary dinner wonderful."

  • "We enjoyed the food however it was hard to enjoy to the upmost because of the noise level. I have had many fond memories of the original Bali Hai from years gone by and this was the worse visit due to the acoustics. This is probably her third or fourth time since the New Bali Hai has opened and always a lovely sunset and gourmet cuisine. I'm not sure when we return if we will try the Bali Hai again."

  • "Everything was wonderful and the view is fabulous! My husband and I shared the coconut shrimp appetizer, and I enjoyed them so much that I ordered the same appetizer again plus the kale salad for my entree. The menu has changed since our last visit there about 8 months ago, and we are very pleased with the change. We had a delightful evening!"

  • "My cousin was so excited to go to Bali Hai for dinner for his birthday. Being from the Midwest, he wanted something exciting. Ambience was great. Drinks were pretty good. Food was delicious, entrees and dessert. My steak was a little under but the server never returned to our table until we were both finished with entrees. Pretty disappointing."

  • "First of all I never write reviews, but in this case I have to make an exception. When we arrived at the Bali Hai I was blown away at how well maintained they have kept this beautiful building. My girlfriend and I entered in and feel in love with the decor "Tiki". Our server was super energetic and very helpful. We have a specific kind of diet, and Bali Hai was very kind and accommodating. The food was phenomenal and the people that worked there are fantastic. I can honestly say we are looking foward to our next visit at the Bali Hai. Thank you so much for the awesome food, and the great Tiki experience.. MAHALO:)"

  • "We went to the Bali Hai for it's history in tiki culture. The drinks are super strong but very well made. we were surprised by the quality of the food - it was top notch. The grouper was super fresh, flaky & perfectly cooked. The scallops were delicious. The wok'ed veggies were fantastic. We really enjoyed our night at the Bali Hai. We are already making plans to visit it again on our next trip to San Diego."
