Diner Reviews
  • "It took 45 minutes to get dinner, and when it arrived it was lukewarm at best. Scallops were only okay and the ribeye steak was not of the best quality. It was disappointing because we had dined at Bali Hai during the fall and the food was terrific, so we were looking forward to this visit. Unfortunately, I had recently heard from other people that the quality of the food was not up to par and, because of our previous experience, refused to believe it. Without the view our experience would have been worse. But, you can't eat the view. I think if you go to Bali Hai for cocktails it's probably a terrific place, but for food this was a disappointing trip."

  • "As always, dinner here last night was unbelievably perfect. Service was spectacular, ambience relaxing, little noise, and the food was a 10+. The problem was in the lounge area prior to dinner. The musician was very good, the drinks were great, but the service was VERY slow. It took us five minutes to get our drink order aken and then another ten before we got served. Other bales had people at them and they couldn't get a server's attention to clean their table off from the previous guest, let alone order drinks. They just didn't seem to have the staff to cover happy hour. But once we went to dinner at 6:45, from that moment on, everything was perfect!"

  • "My family has been coming to the Bali Hai since 1956. We love to watch the transition from daylight to night as the city lights up. The food has always been incredible."

  • "Prices are way too high for the average quality of the food. The views are beautiful, that's the only thing I can say good. Our meal was brought out about the same time as our appetizer. My fish was lukewarm. Service was good."

  • "The view of San Diego's skyline was breath taking. Perfect for an annaversary. Thr food was incredible and our server new when to check in on us and when to give us our time together."

  • "Not a restaurant to enjoy a good steak. I was very disappointed with my food on July 4th. Won't order a steak there again."

  • "The table had a wonderful view which they kindly set us up with as we are from out of town. The server wasn't exactly friendly. Food was really good although some was overpriced once you add on sides (entrees came without any sides). Still, a really nice place."

  • "You pay for the view and prime real estate where this restaurant is located. Side dishes on most menu items are an extra cost option. Dinner for 2 easily tops $100. If you are ready for that, the food is very good, as well as the bar menu. The service is excellent. The view of San Diego Bay is worth every penny. It is a favorite of ours for special occasions."

  • "First visit to Shelter Island and we were pleased to find Bali Hai on our first evening. Even my 9 year old granddaughter enjoyed the food and the view."

  • "I am a young 65 years old (Skydiver & Scuba Diver). I has dined at Bali Hai since I was 9 years old with my parents. The restaurant today is better than it has ever been in it's long and notable history. The perfect place to bring out of town guests."

  • "I've been going to the Bali Hai since the early seventies when my parents took me for the first time. The menu has changed since then but still remains good. Best Mai Tai's in the world and great city view"

  • "Romantic dinner for 2 on the deck overlooking the San Diego skyline. Gorgeous setting and excellent food. Highly recommended!"

  • "Best time to be seated, is about 30 minutes before sunset... That way you appreciate the view of downtown, AND when you finish dinner, you see it reflected upon the bay water... Best romantic dinner... Although the ambience is awkward because some people dress up with a suit, while others wear a tee shirt and flip flops..."

  • "We´ve been to the Bali Hai for the 3rd time, celebrating our anniversary. We got a nice table with this breathtaking view over the San Diego Skyline at Sunset. It was romantic and also funny, energetic, while all the other guest were celebrating their weddings, birthdays or anniversaries, too. We shared a starter and then I had the fresh Ahi Tuna with Vegetables, two yummie Cocktails and at least our friendly server made a picture of us. Perfect Dinner! Thanks to Bali Hai ;-)"

  • "We have been here many times and unlike most buffets, the Bali Hai changes their Buffet around....simple little changes that just make it that much better. And dispite the large groups the noise level was still very tolerable."

  • "We live close to this lovely place, and have dined here often. The food is not great, but it's such a nice place. Service is good, but warm poki, cold entrees, just ruin it all. It's a high volume restaurant, and terribly inconsistent. You never know if an adaquate meal is coming, or one that appears pre-cooked."

  • "We have often dined at the Bali Hai for lunch! The menu very nice, service fantastic and noise level acceptable. We decided to take a few out-of-town guests to dinner at Bali Hai...service fantastic, good delicious but the noise level was so outrageous we could not even talk across our table! Admittedly it was a Friday evening...but could't they do something about the noise level??? How about hanging some interesting cloth banners around to soak us some of the noise? We will not go back for dinner until they do something about the noise...and we'll know when because it is still a favorite luncheon destination."

  • "Had a wonderful and fun dinner here many years ago and while I knew they no longer had a floor show I still wanted to return and check it out. The staff was great. While the food was good we would probably not return as we found the choices to be a bit to different for our taste. The biggest problem we found was the noise. The bar area is in the same large open room as the dining tables and we could hardly hear each other at our table."

  • "It was our first time at Bali Hai and we had a great time. They were quick to seat us at our reservation time and we got a lovely table on the patio. Great food selection and the champagne they served was good as well. My only wish is that there was a nut free selection of desserts...my son has a peanut allergy and so that didn't allow him to try any of the desserts other than the ice cream. Great food, great service...we will be back :)"

  • "Bali Hai has a panoramic view of San Diego and the bay. Be there to see the sunset reflected off the city's windows. Our table was ready when we arrived and was right where we had requested. Our waiter, Jeff, was a jewel and gave us good advice on what to order. The food was excellent. Being Friday night, the bar was mobbed, and the noise level was too high. Try another night."

  • "Was recommended this restaurant from a friend. The servers, hostess, and whole crew was so nice and easy going. They have us recommendations. All the food we ordered was delicious. Came from out of town and it really topped our vacation with this place. Definitely will be coming back."

  • "My family and I went to Bali Hai to celebrate my 28th birthday. The service was great and I love the views of the bay in the dining room. The only thing I was disappointed with was the cost of the food. Our meals were good but they weren't great. I don't think they should charge so much for food that doesn't wow their diners."

  • "I was in the mood for Polynesian, which you can't find too much around San Diego, other than the fast food variety. This is a great place to take family or a large group, you can't beat the awesome waterfront view of the San Diego skyline and it's different than the general fair you find many other places."

  • "A longtime friend and I meet two times a year to celebrate birthdays. The City and Bay view is the best and the food was especially good. The crab cake salad and rock shrimp taco platter were outstanding. Superb presentation. And super rich chocolate truffle cake with a candle on top was a perfect touch. Do not forget Bali Hai. Remember, there are no parking hassles! "

  • "My wife and I celebrated her birthday and our anniversary there and we were very pleased with the restaurant. It was a very busy place filled with special occasions happening. We were fortunate to be seated outside in a secluded corner of the patio overlooking a spectacular view. It was quiet and we were treated very well."

  • "Bali Hai keeps reinventing itself. Thank goodness it does or it would probably be converted to condos! Food was tip top & inventive. Wonderful salads, scallops & of course , drinks! Thank you for a wonderful time!"

  • "We had a good time at the Bali Hai, except for the fact that there was a table of 10 young adults (20's) right behind my husband and about 4 of them were extremely noisy which made it difficult to talk and enjoy. We went to celebrate our 40th anniversary, the atmosphere was very good. The staff was amazing, friendly and helpful. Food was bountiful and lots of choices. Shrimp was a bit mushy and small, and to serve crab legs to that many people had to be on ice and cold (I prefer it warm) but other than that had a great buffet."

  • "A long-standing local area icon, the B-H (or as we locals call it, the Bali TAI, in honor of their legendary mai-tais) has ALWAYS had great staff, great guests and the BEST CITY VIEW IN SAN DIEGO DON'T EVEN TRY TO ARGUE THE POINT! In the last few years, B-H has had a makeover and a brilliant re-fresh of their menu. The food is superb and highly diverse, and the Bali Hai NEVER disappoints! We remain proud here in Pt. Loma to call it our own! "

  • "We had an out of town guest who was thrilled with the view and the food and drink. My husband and I agreed fully with our guest. In fact the food was the best we have had at the Bali Hai since you reopened. We will return again and again. I know it was a busy night for you, but we did feel a bit rushed, with the entrée arriving before we were finished with our first course. But that's the only comment to pass along. "

  • "We made reservations online and a few days later they called us to confirm reservations and ensure both parties were next to eachother. Everything went perfect no hiccups in the system. We enjoyed a beautiful dinner at Bali Hai, then took pictures right outside. Beautiful view. "

  • "If you like a little change to the standard brunch fare, this is the place to go. The restaurant sits at the end of Shelter Island and is surrounded on 3 sides by water. The view of downtown San Diego and all the sailing ships add to the ambiance. There are some brunch standards for those who don't like to experiment, like the omelet bar, but they have a stir fry and a Pho bar. We arrived right at our reservation time and were seated promptly. The service was a bit slow with the champagne and other beverages but otherwise was great. Well worth the price."
