Diner Reviews
  • "We really enjoyed a family brunch at Balboa. The food was excellent and service was friendly and efficient. We're gluten-free and there are lots of options on the brunch menu which was fantastic. After our meal we strolled "

  • "We stumbled onto the Balboa Cafe after all our other choices were taken for Sunday Easter dinner. What a great last resort! The decor was simple, relaxed, charming and restful. The service fast and attentive--reminded us of European wait staff. The meal was delicious. I had the pork chop and my fiancee had the prime rib. Both excellent. The other dishes whisking past us looked incredible too. We'll be back."

  • "Every thing we ordered was delicious! We asked to replace the fries with a salad and were told of course we could. The salad was large, interesting and perfectly dressed. We were impressed with the large list of half bottles of wine. We will definitely go back"

  • "I've never had a meal here that I didn't enjoy. The service is friendly and as helpful as you want them to be (ie never intrusively so.)"

  • "I dine here often, usually for business lunches. My wife and I came here for dinner recently and enjoyed ourselves. The service was very good and the menu had good variety. Everything was good. It is a great place to come after a late afternoon movie."

  • "The French toast is excellent. My husband liked their hash & eggs. Our server was very attentive. A good place to enjoy. Sunday brunch."

  • "Love Balboa Café, Mill Valley. The server was extremely attentive and was able to do everything I asked. I needed particular changes to a recipe and she was able to convey that to the kitchen staff beautifully. This is my favorite go to place. I prefer the Mill Valley Balboa Café to the SF (original). Cheers."

  • "We gad an early dinner and sat outside on a warm evening, it was lovely."

  • "Balboa's Monday evening special is fried chicken, and we visit on Monday's fairly frequently. Often inviting friends. Nobody has ever been disappointed by the chicken. The portions are large. Indeed I often order their wonderful "wedge" salad (it is not really a wedge, but baby romaine with lots of blue cheese, bacon bits and tomatoes) and share my wife's chicken. And don't forget their house made little donuts for dessert....worth the calories. Nothing pretentious, just an upscale place with really good food. It can be noisy if the bar is full, but most of the time the noise level is moderate."

  • "Service not great. My salmon dish didn't look great but I ate it. Then the table next to mine ordered the same and it looked so much more appetizing. I felt like a second class citizen."

  • "The caramelized salmon was perfect...great chef. Brenden is the best bartender for miles around. I've been going back often."

  • "On this visit, our food was okay, none of the menu options were very exciting. What made this dinner "poor" was the service, or lack of service. We hope it was just an off night."

  • "Had a 12:30 reservation for lunch on Thursday. Place was pretty busy. Choice of three not great tables. Took the one in front closest to the bar. Food was good. Service was spotty. Asked for sweetener for iced-tea and it never came. Had to go to the bar and ask the bartender. Several servers but no one took ownership of our table. Makes it hard to figure out who to ask for anything. They are better than this experience showed."

  • "Good food, we had the pork chop and it was a bit dry. The balboa Salad was excellent. The bread pudding was outstanding. They do have a exercise meeting place upstairs that can be noisy at times. You can ask for when they are not in session."

  • "It was our anniversary and I requested a little special service and they were outstanding. Great drinks, fresh ingredients and attentive service. They treated us very special and it was appreciated."

  • "We asked for a quiet table, and because we were eating early (6 pm), we thought it wouldn't be too noisy. The waiter was the noisiest of all! We could hear him all the way across the dining room, when he was waiting on other people. He provided good service, but came to our table more than necessary and was perhaps overly friendly. The food was good, but the noise level spoiled the experience for us."

  • "Our family of four my wife and children one six yr old girl and one 2 yr old boy had a lovely valentines day early dinner at balboa cafe! The service was outstanding! Quick food service for the kiddies and excellent entrees and specialty cocktails for the grow ups. My wife especially enjoyed the special short rib with polenta. If you've never tried their happy hour I would also highly recommend it - great deals on wine beer and well drinks as well as delicious bar food."

  • "Nice staff. Good food. Had the burger. Very good. Cooked as requested. Beverages from the bar were terrific. Spacious in that you're not sitting right smack up against another table so you can actually have a private conversation. Noise level was OK. Went at 6:30pm, so it was busy, but we were well taken care of. I'd definitely go again."

  • "Attending a 7pm play at Marin Theatre Company. Cafe able to serve & get us out the door by 6:40pm (arrived 5pm), without making us feel rushed. Sat at 4-top by door--plenty other tables available at 5:00pm, would have been nice to sit further away from door; especially since had reservation. Service good--although waiter seemed a little forgetful about delivering second glass of wine after ordered. Food only warm, perhaps server had not gotten order to us as soon as ready. (Restaurant was NOT full, so wait staff not overwhelmed.) Overall was impressed; this was 2nd visit. Sunday Prime Rib superb--ordered medium & it was perfect. Pork chop--same compliments. Dessert sundae was delicious. Great restaurant for pre-theatre dinner for MTC."

  • "Three of us enjoyed a lovely lunch. We sat by a window in the very nicely appointed restaurant and enjoyed entree salads - my salade nicoise was wonderful but the highlight was the cream brulee - fabulous! Great service also."

  • "…if the time my wife and I have eaten at the Balboa. Probably approaching 20. We love their Monday night fried chicken, and so do our friends. Actually tonight's visit started when a friend suggested we meet there. The food is consistently good, the service friendly, and the ambience warm and inviting. It is a very nice neighborhood kind of place. The menu is limited, but what they do they do really well. In addition to the fried chicken, my favorites include their wedge salad, a meal in itself, and their cheese plate is excellent."

  • "I love downtown Mill Valley, and this restaurant is a gem in its midst. The service was attentive but not smarmy, the food was excellent (I had the flank steak), delectable dessert options. The only negatives were that the restaurant was loud and the lights set so low that it was virtually impossible for middle-aged patrons such as myself to read the menu!"

  • "Although this restaurant had by far the most customers when we made the drive over, I was still totally underwhelmed. The service to say the least was slow. Not the kind that is allowing for a leisurely lunch. Slow. The food was nicely presented but had nothing to recommend it. The only positive thing I can say is that the bloody mary's are great."

  • "Perfect as always! Table service was a bit slower than usual but that was completely understandable given that it was Christmas Eve and the place was packed. This is a great place at any time...drinks at the bar, breakfast, dinner, late night snack...but they really know how to make a holiday festive! We love Balboa Cafe and are so happy it is in our home town."

  • "We don't usually like to go out to dinner on New Year's Eve and hadn't made any plans because we had a busy few weeks but at the last minute decided to go to dinner with friends from San Rafael. We saw on Open Table that we could get an early reservation at Balboa and decided to go. We have eaten there before a few times. It really was a nice dinner and our friends thanked us for brining the restaurant back into their lives because they had not eaten there since it first opened. The atmosphere was festive, service excellent, and everyone enjoyed their meal. Since we live in Mill Valley and like to patronize our local businesses, we will definitely come back. We had a very nice evening!"

  • "We had a reservation a month in advance. We arrived and the table they set for the 6 of us was a "4-top". After mentioning that this wouldn't work for large group, the Manager pulled in another table and re-set it. It looked great! We appreciated this very much. I said "Thank You" to the female Maitre'd and her reason for seating us at a small table was,"a lot of groups arrived tonight with extra people! We've had to accommodate them all." She did not get it that when you make a reservation (especially) for a special occasion in advance, you don't want to feel like the "walk-in" because other folks change their group size last minute. The food was just OK. We've had better food here. Balboa was not it's best on Christmas Eve!"

  • "For the price I should have driven into san francisco and gotten a great meal. Portions were small as well."
    Dined on 12/6/2013
  • "The food was very disappointing. I ordered the "famous" hamburger. I ordered the meat medium rare - it came medium well, and was very small. The french fries were luke warm and limp and just dumped on the plate and the dish looked very unappetizing which proved to be the case. The noise level was off the wall. We didn't order dessert but the capuccinos came with the coffee slopped in the saucer. Our server did bring a clean saucer and wiped around the cup with a paper napkins. Needless to say I will not be going back."

  • "Food was very good. I had the salmon and my friend had the steak. Both were excellent. We both had desert. She had the chocolate pudding and I had the bread pudding. Our waiter Mark was awesome. Friendly and knowledgeable and clearly enjoyed his job. He made the evening. I will definitely go back and I'll hope that Mark is working!"
