Diner Reviews
  • "One shared appetizer, 3 entrees, one shared desert, water with lemon to drink. $95 including tax & tip for lunch. Food very tasty and unusual. Service a bit slow. Overpriced. Would not go back unless someone else was picking up the tab."

  • "We have dined there before & it was just as good, found it a little bit noisier"

  • "I had the lamb chops, fried cauliflower and my lady had the half chick. Hers had a ton of flavor, mines was good but hers was better. The bread pudding was awesome."

  • "Why insist on reservations when you don't even come close to honoring them (almost an hour past our appointed time!!!) Waiter had an attitude, was marginally attentive and acted like he wad doing us a favour. Unfortunate as the cuisines was inventive Mediterranean/Middle Easter, and delicious. The fried olives were heavenly. Chicken was tender and other dishes were well prepared. Will I go back? Why bother, millions of wonderful choices at places who actually care that I took the trouble to dine there..."

  • "Met two friends for brunch on Sat. We were warmly greeted and seated immediately. Our waitress was gracious and patiently explained several different menu items. Drinks arrived promptly as did our entrees. Our brunch selections were delicious. We were able to chat and linger without pressure to leave. Looking forward to returning."

  • "Had been on my list for sometime. Every dish was delicious, although portion size was a bit light. Would definitely go again."

  • "Unique restaurant in Soho with terrific atmosphere. The crispy cauliflower was the best I ever had. We had numerous small plates in order to sample a variety. Each was excellent. There are many more dishes on their in house menu as well as specials. The menu on the web is only a partial list. I don't think you can go wrong with anything you order. We also had pomegranate honey tea and sangria at the table, both of which were outstanding. Best advice I can give you is GO."

  • "A very pleasant place to meet a friend and have a leisurely lunch. The menu is somewhat limited, but what they do, they do nicely."

  • "each time we are delighted with the food and the waitstaff, esp. Nanon (?sp) who has helped us make great choices like the special bruschetta, the Yemenite pizza. But should have taken his recommendation for the whole fish Look forward to returning"

  • "Seating was too close. Tables were on top of each other. Food was good with many interesting choices. Service was polite and and gracious. The lack of privacy at our table detracted from the experience."

  • "I recommended that we try this restaurant on our first night in NYC. The food was amazing - we wanted one of almost everything! The flavours are fresh and unique, and the presentation is a feast for the eyes. All of us loved the experience, so much so, that I bought the cookbook as a gift for my 2 girlfriends who I dined with. I will surely recommend this spot to others coming to NYC. I will also hope to see a Balaboosta location in LA sometime soon, as I visit there fairly often. This Canadian gal loves Balaboosta!"

  • "We were early for our Saturday night reservation, but were greeted warmly and seated right away, before the evening rush began. Our waiter was charming and attentive and made the occasion special for my mom, on her first trip to NYC in many years. Crispy cauliflower -- signature dish -- was as good as always. Service was perfect, food as good to eat as it is lovely to look at. A wonderful meal at my favorite village restaurant, and a memory made for my mother."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed everything about Balaboosta. The ambiance is lovely, staff attentive and really delicious food. We decided to get lots of small plates so we could experience a little of a lot. Stand outs were the shrimp wrapped in phyllo and the ceviche. Crunchy delicious shrimp with a tobiko sauce that had wasabi in it. I could have eaten a plate of them. Daily ceviche was salmon with a yogurt/dill/cucumber sauce. Light and refreshing. Really enjoyed this spot and have been recommending ever since."

  • "Had dinner here Friday night, been for brunch before but first time for dinner. Tables are VERY close to other tables, feels like we're sitting in on our neighbors dinner. Food was good, but nothing special. Wuite pricey. Prob won't go back again anytime soon"

  • "Am a fan of Taim so have been wanting to try this place for a while. Overall the food and the space were excellent, however they messed up our order on three separate occasions which was a little frustrating (there was only two of us, so shouldn't have been that hard). Would still go back though."

  • "Top of our list on this recent trip to NY. We ate at some excellent restaurants, but this was our favorite. Creative and delicious preparations of fresh and local veggies, meat, pasta and fish. Great and unusual seasonings. Staff are knowledgeable and friendly, with out being phony. "

  • "Outstanding, start to finish. The room was perfectly lit, open yet intimate, and lively without impeding conversation. Do not skip the crispy cauliflower small plate--we could have eaten that (and the fried olives with labne) all night long. Chicken "under a brick" was moist and oh-so-tasty. Calamari appetizer special and sea bass were equally well prepared. The meal ended with a divine piece of knafeh, which transported me back to a years-ago snack in Nazareth. Service was as outstanding as the meal--the staff were attentive, friendly, and knowledgable. Not to be missed!"

  • "With so many restaurants in NYC, I try to go to new places when I visit, but I always end up back at Balaboosts because the food is SO GOOD."

  • "I was expecting much more. While the food was not terrible, it was pedestrian at best. Waiter was ok but those bringing food out were brisk and impatient. Too pricey for what was experienced. "

  • "This kitchen knows what they are doing and we as customers could not ask for more."

  • "Been meaning to try it for a while - was all I expected and more. Good for a romantic night, and most likely good for a group of friends. Very friendly service -- my date was a little late and they were really great about it too! And the food was delicious!"

  • "The food was great but we were disappointed that there weren't more Persian recipes on the menu. The Israeli couscous, however, was fantastic."
    Dined on 5/18/2014
  • "The food is tasty but the overall experience was somewhat disappointing. We felt that the focus was not necessarily on food that tasted really good but rather on dishes that were composed with a range of textures, flavors and colors. This goal somehow took priority over flavor. You can tell that the kitchen staff worked hard on presentation. Dishes were plated beautifully. The flavors, however, took a backseat."

  • "The food and the atmosphere so good ... I keep coming back ... "
    Dined on 5/15/2014
  • "My only complaint is actually with the food. We (group of 6) ordered mostly fish, and a couple of the entrees were very dry. In addition, I thought they were a bit miserly with the portion sizes, but we'll definitely be back."
    Dined on 5/13/2014
  • "An absolute symphony of flavors. Every bite was delicious. Servers were a little too surly and not friendly for such a casual atmosphere."
    Dined on 5/12/2014
  • "To tell you how much I enjoyed this place. After having one of t he hearty brunch dishes I ended up following it up with amazing French Toast. To dishes in one sitting isn't my style but the food was absolutley delicious."

  • "We booked Balaboosta for my 50th birthday celebration. I could not have been more pleased. Best dinner experience while we were in NYC. Amazing service and we were treated like royalty. The food and wine were exceptional. "

  • "Wonderful place to go to enjoy food with a modern Middle East flavor. Be sure and try the Humus which is very light and the fried cauliflower. Very friendly and efficient service."

  • "I made a point of visiting Balaboosta when in town from Michigan, as my family and I are big fans of the cookbook and its aesthetics. Balaboosta is just what I expected, and just right: the food is special without showing off, and the ambience is warm and calm, yet inviting. I'm no foodie, but I can appreciate a great "lamburger" when I have one, and I'd surely take another trip for the chocolate mousse, especially its candied complement. The service was spot on, matching the friendly but elegant vibe. Well done!"

  • "Had to make a quick dinner with my girl to catch a show, I really couldn't understand what is the hype about this place on the reviews, place is "OK +" but nothing special ... the entree were disappointment, had a special sea bass which was a really small portion and taste plane, other black sea bass also taste plane, but the appetizers were very good, burata and the eggplant, the banana cake desert was delicious ! Service was ok but a bit slow and the place wasn't busy. So my overall is "good" for this place. "

  • "Ordered the shashukla and organic poached eggs. Latter was extremely bland. Not worth a visit for brunch given the wealth of other options in NYC "
    Dined on 4/26/2014
  • "Starting with the host's greeting to the check delivery, the experience was excellent. Not a single dish missed its mark, and, it fact, they all (6 of them) exceeded our expectations. Staff was pleasant, knowledgable, and engaging. Great place."

  • "We arrived on time, it was Good Friday so the place was packed. We were greeted and they put us on a hidden table in the back. They were understaffed, one waiter spilled wine on a lady's face. Atmosphere was tense. Slow, we were sitting for a good 10mins without anyone approaching us. When they came over, we were ready to order as we were starving. They run out the chicken we wanted to try, then we had to think about other options. Were not offered a wine menu, very little interaction or eye contact with waiter. We felt like we were disturbing them. When the food arrived it was very good, fresh, very tasty. It made up for the terrible service. "
