  • "My shrimp w/bacon was dry and tasteless. My date's steak was OK. --- The ambience of Bakersfield was --- nothing. Didn't have a personality. Waitress was OK, as was the service. I got the impression that the manager was uncomfortable when asking how we liked the place. Sorry I can't say more positive."

  • "A birthday celebration for a friend. Very attentive (but not bothersome) staff. We received welcome suggestions by our server. A nice variety of appetizers, and the menu is not overwhelming with choices. The food was very hot when it was brought to the table. The salmon was delicious and well presented. My friend's steak was cooked to perfection. My request for the key lime tart with a candle was brought to the table at exactly the right time. I've been at Bakersfield three times, and each time it was perfect. There was also a live band playing in the outdoor seating, yet we were able to hear it on the inside - very pleasant."

  • "Patio's a hidden gem in plain sight. Hard to top the best table in the house - next to a huge fireplace - on a chilly summer night. Under-umbrella heaters glow red, and there's also a nice linear fireplace. Indoor ambiance equally appealing but al fresco dining shines here. Nice barrier wall conceals busy Ogden Avenue just on the other side. Wonderful smoky odor from their grill present inside and out. Delicious 3-rib pork chop can feed 2 or 3. Best yet, buy wine from sister property Standard Market across the street and there's no corkage fee to balance otherwise pricey menu. Whole experience was so nice I returned the next night, surprised by live music, and split an ok prime rib, not nearly as good as the pork chop and sides."

  • "Loved sitting outside with the live music - super fun vibe. We all loved the dishes especially the Fried Chicken dish (ask for all white breast meat). However, DO NOT Order the French Dip sandwich its not what you'd think it will be. Everything else was delish!"

  • "We recently dined at Bakersfield and had an excellent meal. We done at Bakersfield about once a month and are always satisfied but not always feeling like we need to visit more often. They did a great job on the room, warm and inviting without being too formal or too casual. The outdoor area was also done tastefully. This visit there was live entertainment outside which we could hear at our table in the bar area. They were very good. We always have found the valet service to be more of a hassle than a convenience. Who wants to stiff the valet guy but who really needs to valet park your car in a lot to avoid a 60 foot walk? The menu has been a bit stale at times and could use more dinner specials. The wait staff had been inconsistent."

  • "The Sliders appetizer and the creme brulee dessert were delicious. We felt the entree selection was limited and preparation was just OK. Wasn't' bad , but wasn't something that would bring me back. We felt it was lacking flavor, prepared well but missing flavor. I would give it 2 1/2 stars."

  • "One person in our party had the "majestic pork chop". It was monstrous! Three people could have enjoyed it. We were the lucky recipients of this take-home dinner (they were flying out the next day and couldn't bring it home). Absolutely excellent the second day."

  • "Pretty pricey, especially the wines. Had the Knife & Fork Fried Chicken and it was very good, but also fairly expensive. Nothing bad to say, but there are other places to go with good food where one can spend 1/3 less. I do have to give the credit for some really good appetizers-the soicy shrip and the tenderloin sliders were very good, and with nice size portions."

  • "We had a casual business dinner over a lovely meal. Our server, Maya, was a delight, serving us with just the right amount of attention and discretion. I had just been to Bakersfield two nights before on the patio, which is really neat. There was live music and after dinner, we had drinks in some comfy chairs by the fireplace. You would never know you were right on Ogden Avenue! Overall, it is a very nice place to share a delicious meal."

  • "As an avid Standard Market & Bakersfield (up until now) fan - I was incredibly disappointed at our experience there. Our service was lackluster, at best. Our food was under-seasoned, the coleslaw was bitter and under-dressed and the (usually fantastic) pork chop was full of gristle and literally inedible. We received a container of suger/sweetener with our coffee that was drenched in water. To top everything off, we were charged for a drink that was sent back because we did not like it. This used to be one of my family's favorite restaurants. We will not be returning any time soon."

  • "But...the food, which sounded good on the menu (some interesting combinations plus some good old stand-bys for the less adventurous) was just not good. The Knife and Fork fried chicken had miserly portions and was greasy, the french fries were again small portions and neither crispy nor flavorful. The steak was meh. The soft-shelled crab was over breaded and greasy. The one highlight was the ceasar salad, which was nicely done in a classic manner. It was a Saturday night and there was a live band playing on the patio, which was open to the restaurant. The sound was over-loud for a restaurant experience. Then to top it off, the meal was quite expensive--wich is all well and good when the food and ambiance are worth it."

  • "The Hawaiian potato soup was very good . I ordered the special balsamic rib-eye which was good but seemed to lack that rib-eye mouth watering fatness. The portion was rather disappointing. It was smaller than most higher end restaurants. Not very thick and considering the Rib-eyes I have purchased across the street in it's parent Standard Market which are much thicker and bone in, I was kinda taken aback by it's lack of flavor. The waiter was outstanding as was the service but would not order the rib-eye again. It was cooked to my request Med. rare but was dry towards the end. the Chipotle mashed potatoes lacked Chipotle flavor. "

  • "Not only is the ambiance chic, and the outdoor seating so inviting for we long-winter Chicagoans, but the service was outstanding. Waitstaff kept checking to see that we were not wanting, with a smile. I had the char-broiled chicken salad which was fresh and yummy and my companion enjoyed the fresh vegetable dish and was quite happy with the flavors and presentation."

  • "While the food was excellent with plenty of choices, the part that sticks out most was the staff. Our server was thoroughly helpful in aiding my wife in our wine selection. We tasted one and ended up choosing another exceptional bottle that was recommended. With the bottle came the executive chef who was more than happy to discuss the vineyard which the bottle was from along with other comparable wines if we enjoyed this bottle. We were there on a Tuesday evening, but the fact the executive chef (not known he was the head chef at the time he came to the table) came over to enhance the experience was very impressive. There was a harmony among the staff as the server raved about the chef and was outstanding throughout the evening. "

  • "I will give Bakersfield one more try to see if the service was poor because it was Mothers Day and busy. Our waitress seemed distracted, took our order then Ten minutes later came back and said that a big table had just ordered all the remaining quiche Lorraine so we needed to order something else. Then after a long wait we got food but it was the wrong order. My daughter and husbands was right but mine was not. The server then says , oh this order is for another table and proceeds to take it all away. Between not getting what we ordered and making us feel as if the other larger table got preference and having our food taken away even the right dishes, it made us feel slighted. The omelette was just ok but everything else tasted good. "

  • "We have always enjoyed Bakersfield for dinner and lunch and have dined there a dozen times or so. The menu for mother's day brunch seemed like a good deal so we tried it out. My comment would be that although they were only steady busy, (not out the door) the food was mediocre at best and not close to the quality that has always been delivered for previous meals. Two of us had the fried chicken and waffle. The chicken was as small as a hockey puck and dry. The waffle was terrible but the sauce was great. The other 4 meals served at our table were average. I returned my meal which they did comp. It was only the second meal I have ever returned. I will chalk it up to them not being ready for a brunch and try them again."

When I brought it to the attention of our server as well as the manager that we have waited an excessive amount time for food and that it was cold the only response I received was sorry! Needless to say we won't be back! "

  • "had the pork chop. bakersfield clams that the pork chop is smoked for 6 hours then grilled.but it had no smoky flavor and when i cut in to it it was rare.when i asked the server about it he said thats the way thy serve it.so i took it home and put it on my smoker for 3 hours and it was perfect"

  • "We live in Downers Grove about 10 min from the restaurant and after so many times of saying "we should try that place out" we finally did and were so happy we did but of course sad we didn't try it out sooner. We didn't realize what we were missing out on! We brought our friends from the city along for a double date night and spit the edamame hummus with homemade pita. Delicious! I had the crab cake salad, my husband and his buddy had the knife and fork chicken and our other friend had the bacon wrapped shrimp. We all loved our food and even remembered to save room to share the deep fried oreos which were also amazing! Let's be honest, two pregnant girls and that type of food? Yum! Our server was great and the ambiance was spot on. "
