Diner Reviews
  • "For something different we thought we would have lunch at this neighborhood bistro that I heard about on "Check Please". The food was I would call "tasty" but not extraordinary. That said, we would try it again. I ordered the lamb stew and my husband had the steak frites. Our server was very pleasant and the atmosphere comfortable."

  • "The service and food was very good -- mussels both ways are outstanding."

  • "Appetizers took 45 minutes to get to us, escargot was not warm enough. Husband's entree sent back for also not being warm enough. Food was mediocre, too expensive for the experience we had."

  • "Very fresh and delicious French bistro food prepared with thoughtfulness and love. Like eating in a small bistro on the Left Bank in Paris. Waitstaff very helpful and friendly. Small but excellent wine list, with tastes generously offered to help make a choice. Room is small, cozy and kitchy but fun."

  • "When the reservation was made online, it specifically asked if this was for a special occasions--ie--anniversary, birthday, etc. I had placed birthday. But nothing was ever done that evening to honor that occasion-not even a cancle on the dessert. While the onion soup was very good, it was nothing spectacular. I ordered the lamb chops which came luke-warm, and there was more gristle than meat on the chop. Also, it came with no green vegetable. Not once did anyone come over to ask how everything was. They only did that after we were done. The staff were too busy either on their cell phone or chatting with some of their "regulars". We did order dessert which I think was the best thing I had ordered. The bill was outrageous."

  • "We revisited Baker St. Bistro recently after a long-ish absence and were so glad we did! This is a lovely neighborhood spot with consistent cooking, a low-key, French ambiance and attentive service. The traditional French menu (boeuf bourguignon, duck confit, coquilles St. Jacques, fish stew) benefits from updating touches--for example, zucchini and broccoli puree and red pepper coulis with the scallops--that keep the dishes interesting. Service is friendly and on point. You can carry on a conversation here! Baker Street Bistro is solidly back as one of our regulars."

  • "This is a quaint small French bistro. This is the kind of restaurant that you would find on a small street in France. It's cozy and cramped. The tables are really too small. If you have any clumsiness in you, either you or an adjacent table will probably knock over your drink. As it happened, when people were being seated at the next table, they knocked over our glass of wine. No Biggie. The servers to the shawl, washed it and hung it up to dry. The food is excellent and fairly priced. The French onion soup was wonderful. The raw oysters were nice. They confused smoked salmon with smoked ham salad, but that's no problem as we ate both. And they were terrific. The Lamb stew was o.k. And the chocolate mouse was great."

  • "loved my escargot. oysters on half shell good and cold. Dinner salad vinaigrette great. French onion soup yum. Duck breast cooked perfectly, lamb chops great, lamb stew great flavor. The Beef Bourguignon, terrible, watery with no richness. Nothing like LeSecure restaurant in Paris, or what I have learned to cook at home. The mussels looked great, will try those when I return. Desert, Protfileroles the cream puff pastry part seemed stale, but ice cream and chocolate sauce was good. Frasises Balsamic was good with strawberries and ice cream. Waiter good and fast with service even though busy Friday night crowd. Only 2 misses out of 10, so overall pretty good, will go back and try more."

  • "We had the $26 steak which was not grade A, at best grade C, very disappointing. Been here many times but not wonderful this round. There are better restaurants with better steaks."

  • "First time dining. Reservation was provided right on time. Courtesy was evident from host, and service people. Menu was reasonably varied, offering several tasty choices. I had settled on a goat cheese salad which was wonderful and the stew I had order was savory as well but a bit too soupy. Reasonable prices and nice ambiance. Small restaurant but cozy and intimate, Parking on street so get there a head of time. Overall I rate it as a restaurant well worth trying and we will be trying it again."

  • "We had a reservation for late Friday night and the owner said their computer crash and they could not accommodate a table for two even though a table was available. We can only surmise they were overwhelmed..."

  • "My boyfriend and I saw this restaurant on PBS and since it's only a few blocks away we decided to try it, and so glad that we did. The service was friendly and accommodating. Even though they were busy the hostess found a great private spot in the corner for us. The food was impeccable, we started with the tomato basil and French onion soups. My boyfriend ordered the huge bowl of mussels that were so tender with an incredible white wine shallot and garlic sauce. I ordered the cassoulet featuring a tender but crispy duck leg, sausage, and tons of white beans with bacon. Absolutely delicious! We ended the night with the warm caramelized pear tart and strawberry coulis. Amazing!"

  • "The decor felt very European (and a bit worn, but just suitably so), and the ambiance was tres European. The food was really superb, and the service was friendly, suitably reserved, unintrusive, and perfectly timed. We went for our anniversary, and found it to be a great discovery. I'd highly recommend it, and will go back (more than once). I also found the prices to be reasonable (though not cheap of course), and the portions were generous - something unusual in a "bistro" enviroment."

  • "The mussels and French fries were some of the best I've had since Belgium. Enough for two people. Onion soup was delicious also. But the meat entrees were tough and disappointed my husband and a relative."

  • "We may have well been in Paris. The giant bowl of mussels and fries served French style was great. I had a fish stew in Lobster broth which was outstanding. We will return!"

  • "At last a real French restaurant! The food came quickly yet tasted fresh and homemade. The soup of the day was mushroom soup which the best mushroom soup i've had in a long time. I had a broccoli soup at another "French" restaurant recently which did not compare. Too much creme too little broccoli. This really tasted like delicious mushrooms. I also had the coquille saint Jacques which was perfect. My son had the steak tartar and was very pleased. "

  • "The steak tartare and mussels were very good. The two steaks and beef bourguignon were good. The duck and the French onion soup were just fair. The food is not as well prepared as the food we had in Paris."

  • "We have been eating here for years (20+) -- and, if possible, they keep getting better and better. Grandmere's down-to-earth and delicious kitchen. Moules Provençale come perfectly steamed in a HUGE bowl. The daily prix fixe (three courses for $20) is unbeatable for quality, quantity and price. Wine list is small and well-matched to the food. Reservations highly recommended."

  • "We had a 6:30 reservation but didn't get seated till 7:00. The restaurant was understaffed. They told us to wait outside, but didn't offer us water or anything while we waited. There seemed to be only one waiter for the room which was full with about 30 diners. The table was small and the space was tight. My dining companion said the mussels were not fresh. The prix fixe dinner was just okay; a pork chop with a little tasteless gravy, mashed potatoes, mushroom soup and fruit for dessert for $20. I won't go back. It sounded good from the reviews on Check Please, but I won't go back. "

  • "This got glowing reviews on "Check Please, Bay Area" so we were disappointed that food was mediocre, interior was a little shabby, and service was slow. "

  • "The food was good not great. The service was good but not enough servers for the whole restaurant. The desserts were impeccable and the wine list was ok. We were caught off guard by the hostess. She was a little put off but eventually came around. Also, we noticed the chef going outside to smoke and wondered if he washed his hands before going back to the kitchen. That was a put off. "

  • "Heard about this restaurant on Check Please! Was delighted to get in on a Friday without difficulty and be seated and dined in style. Really enjoyed authentic French menu. Duck was terrific. Escargot the best ever tasted."

  • "We had a wonderful French meal at the Baker Street Bistro! The food was excellent. However, there were only 2 waitstaff serving, and things were quite backed up. The restaurant looked and felt under-staffed. "

  • "Hubby and I visited Baker Street Bistro for lunch during a recent visit from the East Bay. The restaurant is unassuming...there are Health Department signs and other documents hanging on the wall. However, the warm welcome and homey atmosphere reminded us of visits to similar restaurants in Paris. The food was prepared without flourish and was great. Baker Street Bistro is a hidden treasure in San Francisco. We will definitely return."

  • "With so many wonderful places in San Francisco it's surprising that a restaurant can sustain with such offerings. Two of us had the steak and both were small and about a fourth fat or gristle. The duck breast too was small and overly sweet. The mussels were just OK. The three other diners judged the fries to be of the frozen variety. Service was adequate but rather impersonal and aloof. Even if prices were much lower it would not be a value. "

  • "Although the food was superb the facility really needs to be renovated and cleaned up......it's frankly rather shabby and does not stand up to the fine cuisine."

  • "We arrived as restaurant opened. Were seated at tiny window table. Only one other table occupied. Ordered tuna appetizer and charcuterie plate, steak frites and cassoulet{ a specialty]. A huge disappointment. Steak went home to our dog. We hoped the Isle flotante {floating islands would be some redemption. A tough merengue served in a tiny bit of custard sauce. A truly sorry excuse for a French bistro. "

  • "We loved this restaurant-- it's reasonably priced, the service is charming, friendly and swift, the wine list is simple and reasonable, and the food was genuinely french, not at all "nouvelle", and excellent all round."

  • "Tried to make reservations at another spot and this was recommended instead. We had one of the loveliest, and most delicious, dinners ever. A lovely spot, fabulous salads, perfect (and very French bistrot!) food. They seamlessly accommodated our son with special needs and the evening was memorable for that also. "

  • "My friends and I get together every few months for lunch. I drive by BSB regularly and have always wanted to try it. None of us had eaten here before, so I made a reservation for the 4 of us. What an wonderful dining experience! This is a hidden gem! The restaurant is charming (feels like being in a Paris bistro), the service is friendly and casual, and the food is yummy! Will come again. Next time with my family. "

  • "Saw on Check Please, so went for birthday celebrations.Restaurant did nothing to recognize our celebration (it was noted in our reservation); we brought along birthday napkins. We tried the 4-course set meal.Soup was OK (excellent texture and pure mushroom flavor and warm enough, but needed something for taste bud stimulation such as sherry or a bit of salt); entree was excellent (not the top cut of meat, but delicious sauce, with scrumptious whipped potatoes); salad was OK (very tender micro-greens with a light to-the-point-of-wondering-if-it-existed dressing; dessert was fantastic (lightly air-whipped chocolate mousse with cream and 1/2 strawberry). No soda refills;water glasses kept full. Excellent service. Will visit next to try reg menu"
