Baker and Bankerthe menu was consistentlythe menu was consistently adventurous and the food consistently delicious. With the only exception being the cheese selection which we all found rather boring. I greatly appreciate that the chef came to the table to see that everything was satisfactory.
The place does need more work, however, to bring the decibel level down.6/15/2013 12:00:00 AMperfect execution with styleCozy and classic/old San Francisco this little nook was a great find. Aside from being slightly chilly in the restaurant and the pate being served cold as well - the food, service and ambiance was near flawless.
For instance, it is rare to get octopus cooked perfectly and theirs was and tasted like turkey, so tender. The dish was beautiful and the flavors were the perfect compliment to the octopus. It was delightful and surprising. And every dish was delightful and not predictable.6/14/2013 12:00:00 AMFantastic ExperienceThe ambiance is great. The food is even better. Definitely coming back soon6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMPerfection!Second time here and it was just as fantastic as the last time! The roasted carrot salad was lovely and the County greens salad was also memorable. Of course the desserts were rich and delicious!6/5/2013 12:00:00 AMDeserves accoladesDined with friends and remembered this location when it housed an earlier restaurant. Today the room is stylish yet comfortable and congenial. Allows some sense of privacy despite the table spacing. Our dinners were truly outstanding and my guests said it was some of the best they had ever.6/4/2013 12:00:00 AMnice place!I don't have much to say. The space is small and cozy. The food was delicious (bread sampler, stuffed squash blossoms, halibut entree, and lemon meringue icebox cake). The service was quite good.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMalway a great experienceThe quality is superb; service is great. My only comment is the $30 per bottle corkage regardless of whether you buy anything from the wine list. This is a bit steep and not really necessary. Our table was not ready when we arrived but the hostess was very gracious and apologetic so we felt that they really cared about this issue. So many restaurants do not even make an effort at having your table ready for the reservation time. There are few tourists here; a locals special place.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMFood outstanding; pleasantFood outstanding; pleasant neighborhood/downtown atmosphere; only wine and beer/relatively small portions; charge extra for bread (but really good).5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMDelicious and friendlyWe dined her for the first time this weekend. We were not disappointed, down to the "bonus" muffin and scone we were given at the end of our meal. The menu and kitchen does not try to do too much, and what they do was really nicely executed. The Bavette steak was a standout, but the maccheroni with spring peas was also a favorite. Don't miss desserts and check the specials on the chalk board. We will be back, for sure.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMQualityWe had a nice walk from soma followed by an even better evening. A champagne aspertif at the bar and an exquisite meal after seating. The smoked trout appy was to die for and the halibut w bacon marmalade finished the evening. Try it....5/23/2013 12:00:00 AMCozy and deliciousCelebrated our daughter's birthday here...had heard good reviews so we were very excited. Started with very pleasant greetings from the staff. Very attentive and friendly server with perfect timing in coming to our table just when we needed her. Our appetizer was just delightfully delicious...the smoked trout on potato latke...wow, what a scrumptious way to start a meal! That combined with a salad would make a fantastic meal in itself. Our entrees were the halibut and the black cod. Both were wonderful with flavors popping which made each bite so enjoyable. Finished with 2 desserts: the triple chocolate cake (w/birthday greetings) and the lemon dessert....one word: WOW! Would go back anytime to this cozy, warm and inviting place.5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMVery niceOverall this restaurant experience was very nice. Our server was just okay but the fact that the chef came around and visited each table to check in on diner's meals I think made up for that. Food was interesting and tasty. We also enjoyed the wine.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMThe best so farMy friends and I have been to Baker and Banker many times, but this time was the best. The trout appetizer continues to "wow". Normally the entrees are very good - this time they were as good as the entrees. Our visit paralleled any Michelin rated restaurant, such as La Folie. Even Kokkoari, which is one of my favorite restaurants in the City, could not compare to this evening. "Wow".5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMLoved everything about BakerLoved everything about Baker and Banker except how close the tables were and the fact that there was no place for diners waiting for a table to wait - except right at the door of the restaurant.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMVery MoisésTreta Food but very difficult to have a conversación5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent as usualPerfect local's spot. Get their signature: Miso cod. Their salads are great too.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMWe enjoyed the ambience andWe enjoyed the ambience and simple decor. The staff was very good and friendly, so the overall feel was relaxed. The menu was interesting and we were grateful for some vegetarian choices which were good. The fava beans were fantastic! And we especially liked the halibut and the salads. We will be happy to come back and try more things!4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMA transformative experienceI now understand what it is to appreciate fine food. Each ingredient in a dish is detectable and yet the whole is a superb combination of flavors. My comments apply especially to the octopus appetizer and the Maccheroni (and I am not a vegetarian). The bread basket and the chocolate cake are also outstanding. My husband enjoyed the Bavette steak, which was cooked perfectly. The only disappointment was the special spotted prawn appetizer. The service was excellent although there was a glitch in the bill at the end because of a change in appetizer order. The design of the space is warm and comfortable.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMEvery dish had surprises andEvery dish had surprises and combinations that complimented and delighted!4/24/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful new and interestingWonderful new and interesting daily menu. Beautiful food presentation.4/23/2013 12:00:00 AMDeserves a Michelin starJust as fabulous as The French Laundry and Manresa's. We had the Line County Greens salad and Smoked Trout for starters. The salad was out of this world: very fresh butter lettuce sitting on avacado cream with the tastiest vinaigrette, every bite bursting with a multitude of fresh flavors. The smoked trout, much to our surprise (not trout people) was utterly delicious. I could have made a meal on that alone. My husband had the Kobe Bavette and I ordered the Alaskan Halibut. Everything on the plate was something special, down to the chard subric which was laced with Meyer lemon essence. The Kobe was done to perfection and very tender; my halibut was incredibly fresh and perfectly cooked. We will DEFINITELY return4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food, unfortunatelyGreat food, unfortunately they ran out of the only fish dish on the menu, leaving the menu limited.
Smoked trout on the potato latke was absolutely amazing and the duck dish was one of the best preparations I've ever had.
It's on the expensive side but worth it.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMMy favorite restaurant inMy favorite restaurant in San Francisco! Great every time.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMI liked it. This was theI liked it. This was the second time for me. The first time the service was terrible. This time it was very good.
The food is sophisticated, creative and very good. My wife thinks its too pretentious.
this is like a very elegant bistro. Hard to figure out.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMIt's been over a year sinceIt's been over a year since my last visit, and I think B & B has lost an effable something. While nothing was wrong with any of our dishes, and my business associate (who'd never been there before) was quite happy with his food, I remember being stunned in past visits, and there was nothing spectacular in this one. The smoked trout/latke was impeccable, but the duck dish was not memorable. In other words, a good dinner, fine evening, but not as special as it used to be.4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent place to go duringExcellent place to go during the week. I flt its small size would make it a problem on the weekend because getting a seat would be hard. Be prepared to valet park because there is one street parking available.4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMDining area was quite dark.Dining area was quite dark. More lighting would have helped the ambiance.4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMIt was our 1st time at theIt was our 1st time at the restaurant and felt welcomed as soon as we walked in the door being greeted by the "Chef". We were seated immediately. Can't say enough about the food....it was fabulous and very imaginative. Service was attentive but not overbearing. Would definitely go back and would recommend this wonderful place to anyone.4/9/2013 12:00:00 AMReally good, but too expensiveEverything was really good except the prices!
The artisanal break basket (with the types of breads written on their blackboard and costing $4.50) was delicious, but certainly at a cost. They were so tasty we ate them all, which meant we filled up on bread.
The food was good; the service was good. But for the price, it would be nice if the tables weren't so close together. We could hear everything discussed at the tables next to us. How can you have a romantic dinner like that?4/7/2013 12:00:00 AMThat chocolate cake!We had a fantastic time at Baker and Banker. The service was outstanding, the wait staff worked really hard to see to it that we were comfortable and happy. We started with the trout appetizer and that beet sauce brought the whole dish together and highlighted the smokiness of the fish. I had the black cod and it was buttery and perfectly cooked, it felt decadent and rich, yet delicate at the same time. We finished with the legendary chocolate cake and a glass of Banyuls. I highly suggest you go here intending to leave room for dessert or you'll regret it. The chocolate cake blew my mind. They wrote "Happy Anniversary" on it for us which made the whole evening lovely and memorable. We'll be back.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of the best meals I haveOne of the best meals I have had in a long time. The food was amazing, well prepared and inventive without being ostentatious. The service was attentive and precise. The look and feel of the restaurant is lush and welcoming. I love the decor. Wines were well chosen and nicely priced.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMBest in the north endEverything you want in a restaurant ... Good food, good service, attention to detail and a nice vibe in the place. The owners are always there making sure everything goes well. The dishes are imaginative. The staff make every effort to please. There is a New York sensibility ... in the best waynice little bar scene......the latkes and smoked trout with beets and shaved fennel is worth the trip on its own...this is the best restaurant in the nothern end of the city...A16 and Spruce could pick up some pointers here...4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMWe live a few blocks fromWe live a few blocks from B and B. we like to take friends to good places and this one is a good one. Nice waitress, good food and everyone minds their own business unless you find some kindred food freaks to talk to.
We especially liked the way our eggs were cooked for BISCUITS and GRAVY, very smooth and light, and we liked that they used good Champagne
for our Passion fruit Mimosas....nice....jl3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMconsistently fantasticHave enjoyed every meal ive had here!! great service, delicious food and affordable prices. always on my list of recommended restaurants!3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMBaker and Banker was fantastic.Baker and Banker was fantastic. The service was top notch and the quality of the food was superb. So glad I made the effort to go there during my visit to San Fran.3/26/2013 12:00:00 AMInnovative vegetablesInteresting preparation of vegetables, e.g. chopped turnip greens to go with the whole baby turnips. My husband loved the grilled baby bok choy, one of his favorite vegetables. Staff was very accommodating of our time constraint to attend a nearby play; however, arrival of the bill was slow. But we did get to the theater in time to get good seats given general admission. Great innovative show at the nearby Custom Made Theater Company on Gough St. Check it out. The Theater does innovative, challenging shows, in a small (less than 100 seats) in theater in the round. In general, my husband thought it was one of the better meals we have had in SF. And he is fussy. So maybe, give it more stars than I did.3/24/2013 12:00:00 AMIt was wonderful! We will definitely go back! Every course was outstanding - even the bread! The scallops were heaven and the homemade ricotta and mushroom pasta melted in your mouth!!
Definitely a wonderful place - it will be one of our go to's from now on...
The chefs came out to check on everyone and talked to everyone. It was a delight.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMWell, I'm prejudiced: thisWell, I'm prejudiced: this is my favorite restaurant. Everything about it I like. The only thing was that last night (Thurs. evening) it was crowded and loud. Usually, I go a bit earlier and not on a Thursday, so it's more "restful." However, it's such a great place, I'll always go here!3/14/2013 12:00:00 AMAnother fabulous mealBaker and Banker continues to be our favorite restaurant in San Francisco. The food is fabulous and the service is perfect.3/13/2013 12:00:00 AMDespite an awkward location,Despite an awkward location, Baker & Banker manages to feel clubby and intimate. I'd been meaning to try the restaurant for years, but it is a destination on the corner of Bush and Octavia. We had a knowledgable and discreet waiter, who serviced the table with aplomb. The dishes we ordered were impeccable and enjoyable. Chef Baker stopped by the table and recommended two dessert choices. Go with her expert suggestions for a grand finale.3/12/2013 12:00:00 AMFantastic service, fantasticFantastic service, fantastic food, and a wonderful evening. Couldn't ask for more in a restaurant!3/8/2013 12:00:00 AMMy absolutely favorite restaurant..My absolutely favorite restaurant...on all counts!3/5/2013 12:00:00 AMA fun and delicious choiceA fun and delicious choice for a 60+ birthday party with foodie friends from the Valley. Always excellent food options, great service, delicious wine, how can we go wrong? It was a terrific dinner.3/1/2013 12:00:00 AMSome of the best food I'veSome of the best food I've had in San Francisco in a long time. And I eat out here a lot. Our server was a little pushy (we had an early reservation and she came by at least four times to take our order before we were ready), but worth it for the food. Bravo!2/15/2013 12:00:00 AMEh, comme ci, comme caI made a 1pm reservation for 3 people. 2 of us arrived and were told our table was not ready yet and that we would have to wait for the 3rd party. My friend arrived at 130pm, but our table still was not ready. Makes me wonder what would have happened if we all did arrive on time. The food was very good but not fantastic. The beef cheek was tasty, duck confit dish had too much goat cheese. French toast bread pudding was like eating dessert, very good but heavy. The banana bread was my favorite. I was so excited about dining at B&B, but was somewhat disappointed. Plus my daughter ordered the eggs in purgatory but the sausage was sold out. So that was a let down. Too bad b/c I wanted to LOVE this place, but couldn't.2/10/2013 12:00:00 AMConsistently good food andConsistently good food and service. I had the duck breast and it was lucious; my husband had the scallops and he had a smile on his face like a Cheshire Cat! What can I say, we love the place and it's just around the corner so we can stumble home after a few glasses of delicious wine.12/19/2012 12:00:00 AMGreat FindBaker and Banker exceeded expectations. The bread was delicious and each course interesting. But even more remarkable was the excellent service we received. I have loved this spot from when it was the Meeting House, to Quince and now Baker and Banker continues to the trend of great dining experiences in this cozy neighborhood spot.12/14/2012 12:00:00 AM
