Diner Reviews
  • "food was fine - and I would eat there again but I wouldn't rush back - but staff was great, place is really nice, maybe it was just an off day."

  • "We had a lovely time! The decor was so neat and the atmosphere was really fun without being too overwhelming. My food was incredible, and I would definitely recommend the sweet potato and chicken hash to anyone going during brunch time. We'll certainly be coming back!"

  • "We felt the food was fine. The location and ambience were perfect. A place I would get a drink not go to dinner again."

  • "They really do go for the somebody's-nice-back-deck feel, very successfully. It's a unique look and feel for a restaurant of this caliber. Service was quicker than we expected. The food was more inventive-sounding on the menu than inventive-tasting on the plate, but was quite good nonetheless."

  • "We were looking for a comfortable reasonably priced location for dinner for 5 people on a Friday night before going to the Opera House to see The Book of Mormon. This place fit the bill perfectly! Located just a block from the Boston Common and a block from the opera house, the location couldn't have been better. We were able to book reservation the day before but on the day of would have had some trouble getting in. The premise is that everything is grilled, just like on your back deck. Burgers, steak, chicken were all very good. One member of our party had the swordfish kabob.... not a crumb was left! One member was vegetarian and she enjoyed her grilled veggie platter. Not a lot of choice for vegetarians."

  • "Excellent location to see a show at Boston Opera House. Fun atmosphere. BUT the food was mediocre and the service was not good. After serving our meal, the waiter came back before we dug into our food to see if everything was alright. That was the last we saw of him. I finally flagged him down to get a glass of wine which arrived after I finished my dinner. They advertise $12 validated parking at the Lafayette Hotel which sounds like a great deal. That is only good for 3hrs. If you go to see a show, the parking is regular price."

  • "We had brunch on Sunday before a performance at the Opera House. The service was friendly and efficient and the decor was fun but not obnoxious. The food was fine, but not exceptional. One friend and I ordered the sweet potato hash. We both reached for the salt shaker immediately after our first bites. After adding salt, the dish was fine. My husband ordered the french toast, which he said was ok. It is a good place for a meal if you are in the location already, but I wouldn't make a special trip."

  • "My wife and I had dinner at Back Deck before a show. The food was good with portions just the right size. The wings were good with a little heat but not overpowering. The gogonzola sauce was great (better than standard Blue Cheese). The service was good (it was early) and not rushed.. The place got crowded and there was a bit of a wait as we left."

  • "We were seated right away even though we were about 20 minutes early for our reservation. Food good overall but service not so much. Once we received our food, our waiter was very scarce. He brought the check and didn't ask us if we wanted coffee or dessert. It was right around the corner from The Boston Opera House so it was very convenient to where we were going."

  • "Always our go-to place before seeing a show at The Boston Opera House. The food is very good, the waitstaff is very attentive, and their is something on the cocktail menu for everyone. The best restaurant in Downtown Crossing."

  • "Good not great experience. Food and drinks lacked a little something. Wait staff was very attentive and was much appreciated as we were catching a show nearby."

  • "Tried this place a couple days ago. Very good food and service. Loved the sangria! The decor in the restaurant is fun and funky. I will definitely be back!"

  • "I enjoyed the atmosphere. It really felt like we were dining out ons deck. Although I wish there were more things on the menu or different items every so often."

  • "This is a great choice if you are in the theatre district and especially if you have celiac disease or gluten intolerance. They have a good gf menu and the staff are pleasant and know what they are doing. This was my second time here and I would go back."

  • "Had lunch there during dine out Boston week. Food was okay. Salad was pale. Service was slow. Not recommended for people who have to get back to work after lunch. People seemed nice. Spacious, not overcrowded."

  • "There's nothing worse than to enjoy a meal and then suffer by being to full at a show. The Back Deck offers small plates that truly fill the bill. Our servings were ample and for those that needed a little more, the desserts topped off the meal with a taste of sweetness. No sleeping during our ballet...we enjoyed the evening completely!"

  • "A great place to eat when you are going to the BOSTON OPERA HOUSE. It is close by, the choice of food is excellent and the service is super. It is a little noisy but can still carry on a conversation."
    Dined on 3/19/2014
  • "For all the money spent, service was slow and inattentive. The food was luke warm. Dessert was very regular. And although the drink was good, service was so poor, getting more than one was virtually impossible!"

  • "We had an early dinner before attending a 6:30 show. EVERY entre was YUMMY:) We'll return again for sure!"

  • "I guess I missed the point, but apparently everything at this place is grilled including the pulled pork.I got the Pernil Cubano en Calabaza. I found the pork to be unappetizing because it was charred. Who roasts pulled pork? These guys. Pernil (pulled pork) is supposed to be squishy, not charred and crunchy. Though it added a textural component to the dish, I was not a fan. However, the acorn squash, the black beans, and the rice were amazing. The whole dish was so much better without the pork. Overall, it was an okay place to dine, but I wouldn't go back."

  • "The food was well prepared and we liked the open feel of the restaurant."

  • "Had a quick dinner before going to a concert at the Orpheum. Food came out very quickly. Swordfish kebab was great as was the Cobb salad with grilled salmon. Try to get a table in Tom's section - he's very attentive & friendly."
    Dined on 3/7/2014
  • "The others in my group of 4 loved the burgers. The restaurant was flexible about which mayo side came with the burgers. They have a gluten free menu. I had a mediocre Grilled Vegetable Provençal. On an earlier pre-theatre visit, I had a the Swordfish and Vegetable kabobs - that was quite good.Decent limited wine list. Overall a good experience. We'd return."

  • "Went here on a Monday night. Very quiet, a reservation wasn't even required. The background music was barely noticeable and the atmosphere was pleasant. Our friendly waiter had some suggestions of things on the menu to try. Great! The food was very good and I'd definitely recommend it. Possibly the nicest place close to the Park St. T station."
    Dined on 3/3/2014
  • "Back Desk has something for everyone. From burgers and fries to full entries. I love all the food, drinks, and desserts everytime I go. Always my choice for pre-theater dining!"
    Dined on 3/1/2014
  • "How can you enjoy the food or drink, (which were fine), when, even at the farthest back tables, you couldn't converse with friends, or even order without yelling? It's okay for an emergency snack before the theater, but fine dining it is not."

  • "There's always a feeling of summer inside this place, even in the dead of winter. The food is decent and very reasonably priced, and the service is attentive. There's a relaxed atmosphere, with a lot of students and their parents eating here on the weekends. Nice, casual place for lunch if you're in the area shopping, or just before the matinee at the ballet."

  • "Back Deck has been on my "where to try" list for a while now. There are not a ton of BBQ of Boston so on my list it went. We were seated promptly and that is where my good part of the review will end. To sum it up, our waiter forgot us our appetizer plate was not cleared until our dinner dishes were cleared, my pulled pork over acorn squash and rice was inedible and my husbands Cesar salad looked as if it was poured directly from a bag. Everything is clearly cooked WAY ahead of time and you are rushed though the entire meal. I will say we did make it to our movie way ahead of schedule."

  • "This restaurant is good if you want to grab a quick bite to eat. The music in the background was reggae. That should give you an idea of how casual it is. If that is what you are looking for, a burger or salad, then give it a try. I would rather have been in a pub for that kind of fare. I must say the waitress, whose name I unfortunately forget, was very pleasant."

  • "Where else can you find the great summer experience INDOORS in Boston in February. Nice menu with range and moderate prices, good burgers and nice background music which in not obtrusive. Good job all around."

  • "My girlfriend and I dined at the restaurant on Valentine's Day. We both had never been there before. I ordered the back ribs appetizer for us to share and for entrees I had the cobb salad and she had the Caesar salad with chicken. The ribs were not very flavorful and could have used a little more seasoning. The same thing happened with my cobb salad; there was not enough flavor in the dressing. I ate as much as I could because I hate to waste food, but my girlfriend didn't even eat half of the salad because she said there was not enough dressing to begin with. The dim lighting in the restaurant provided an ambience suitable for a romantic outing and the location downtown was optimal. Great for seeing a movie after."

  • "We saw this restaurant on Phantom Gourmet and had high hopes for a good meal. Those hopes were dashed. A hot wings appetizer came quickly but was greasy and flavorless (all flaps too, no drums!). My spiced cider came with cinnamon I had to stir as it settled to the bottom of cup. My husband's steak, ordered medium, came well done. The beef was 'meh' quality (as were the potatoes au gratin) and covered in char from being cooked on a dirty grill. The grilled chicken I ordered also had char, but was juicy and when dipped in the garlic mashed potatoes, was for a tolerable meal. The prices are absurdly high considering the poor quality food, our 2nd server's lack of grace, and the Lazy Susan filled with condiments on our picnic dining table."

  • "We made a reservation for lunch online, and the reservation was confirmed. Our group showed up at the restaurant & the front door was locked & no one was inside. There wasn't even a sign on the door explaining why they were closed. We ended up having an amazing lunch across the street at Papagayo."

  • "There is something for everyone....you can get a burger or have small plates and share. We have been there several times and it is always good! And we had the best service on Saturday....nice young man that gave us excellent recommendations for cocktails and dinner! Will definitely go back."

  • "While the service is always hit or miss here, the food saves Back Deck and has made it one of my favorite spots for Sunday brunch. I recommend the grapefruit as a starter ( it's grilled then drizzled with honey). I have tried almost every one of their main dishes and haven't been disappointed yet."
