Service was slow, appetizers took too long to come out. Hostess was on phone when we arrived, second hostess came up began to help us, phone rang and answered it making us wait longer. Should have put person on hold. She was polite to us. All employees were very nice though.

The Back Burner has long been a favorite of ours for special occasions such as anniversaries and birthdays, and I have always looked forward to eating there. However, I was disappointed on our most recent visit. The server, though friendly, seemed distracted and disorganized. The food was not up to par either. I had the crab cakes, which were OK, but the chef seemed more interested in plate decoration than in serving a real meal. The menu promised accompaniments of summer squash and some sort of cranberry "gastrique", both of which sounded good. The summer squash looked like a hollowed-out smear on the plate, and the cranberry "gastrique" consisted of three tiny red dots on the plate...all very pretty, but I left hungry and felt we did not get much value for our money. We passed on the dessert menu and went out for ice cream instead. We will not be rushing back.

Back Burner is always stellar. Across 18 months, we've been 7 times and have come away happy. I mean from our household of 2 adults and a 1st grader to extended family gatherings of 6 picky adults both old and young have a good experience. EVERY time we are satisfied with the food, service, and atmosphere at Back Burner. It's our go-to special occasions place especially with out-of-town visitors because we don't have to worry whether it will be hit or miss. Keep in mind that it's quiet, above average in cost but not overly expensive, and slightly child friendly but not as in a family oriented restaurant. If you have a child who is reasonably well-mannered then it's fine. They time the child's meal specially and have kid friendly choices but it's a grown-up place that you can bring young children to and have a delightfully gourmet meal. Expect seasonal items that are slightly unusual and gourmet. The dishes are carefully created with regard to combinations and appearance. I recommend dining all courses but choosing the small portioned entrees as to enjoy the wonderful tastes of every course without getting unpleasantly full. Wines seem to be good according to a few wine snobs in my midst. It's truly a subtle surprise that delivers every time.

Our group of seven were there for dinner on Saturday, Oct 25 and had a wonderful time. The service was attentive and all of us enjoyed our dishes. We appreciated that they had half-servings of most entrees, and most of our group did order them. We will definitely return.

The restaurant is beautiful..except where they sat us. Right next to a very, very large open window with very bright light streaming out and where you can view all the kitchen happenings. It was not very pleasant when the rest of the restaurant had candles and darkened, soothing, areas with fireplaces etc. And the restaurant was not full. It was also not very pleasant to watch the staff dig their un-gloved hands into boxes of food and then wipe their hands on their pants!! I really had to go to my "happy place" so that I could enjoy the evening. For what it cost us to go there, I would have liked a better seat. Otherwise, cocktails, dinner, & dessert were all great.

The Back Burner never disappoints .As always the service was good. Our filets , mashed potatoes and haricot verts were delicious. A choice of lunch or dinner size filet is a nice option. The house salad is filled with craisins, nuts and feta cheese along with the usual lettuce tomatoes and cucumber. Delicious !

First time here. Yes, the pumpkin mushroom soup lives up to the hype!! The decor is "rustic ski lodge"... charming and cozy. The clam appetizer was excellent. The nightly special fish entree was amazing. It was a Hawaiian variety white fish. Ribeye special also good. Service by Diana was top notch. Would recommend!!

This was the first time we've been to the restaurant. After reading the reviews I was skeptical. We are a couple that likes to dine out and we seek out nice restaurants in the Tri-state area. That being said, the food was outstanding with a nice menu choice. The portions are larger and less expensive than their sister restaurant, Krazy Kats. It was Monday night and they had an Italian special menu with large portions. We ordered off the regular menu. Their Pumpkin mushroom soup was awesome. The service was lacking a bit. We had to wait for our waiter a couple times. Other than that I would highly recommend this restaurant. Get the Pumpkin Mushroom soup!

My husband and I were going to a concert at House Industries, so we looked for a restaurant close by. The address is Hockessin Corner, and we had to drive around the shopping area to find it, but it was worth it. I wish I could remember our servers name, but she set the tone. She was charming and helpful. We chose Delaware eats, a prix fixe meal, and we both enjoyed our choices. They had some great local beers and the layout of the restaurant makes all the tables good tables. I would certainly go back.

Based on a recommendation we normally try a lunch first to sample food quality, taste blends and service. Really extra nice plate presentation and variety of tastes on a single plate for lunch time eating. Our server was especially helpful, without being intrusive, in educating us on the favorites and famous 'bests'. The pumpkin/mushroom and the sausage bean soups were meal-quality in themselves. Be back soon for dinner.

We came to the restaurant with family and friends to celebrate my son's birthday. The restaurant thoughtfully seated us at the back of the room with a great view of the dining area while being somewhat private. We then enjoyed a boisterous time together without worrying that we were bothering other diners. The food was delicious and service pleasant.

We dined at Back Burner as part of Delaware Dines Out. We were seated promptly and received both the regular and special menus. Our appetizers seemed to take a long time to be delivered (Mushroom/Pumpkin soup and special Flatbread). Both were good, but not outstanding. Our dinner selections (Rockfish) were small and the flavor was...mild? Nothing outstanding. Desserts were fine (we don't usually order dessert). Many of the diners seemed to be local and the average age was 'mature.' There was nothing about the meal overall that would entice me to return.

My wife and I moved to southern Chester County a year ago and have been busy sampling the local restaurants in the area and over the border into northern Delaware. We go to restaurants virtually every Friday night. On 9/12/14 we decided to try the Back Burner and found the food excellent (our entrees were short rib and rockfish) , the timing of the courses and the knowledge of our server all were excellent. Because we tend to eat relatively early (6:30 PM) when eating alone, our comments on the absence of noise may not be accurate later in the evening or on a different evening. Back Burner is absolutely a gem and worth driving to get to.

I have eaten both lunches and dinners at the Back Burner over the last few years and have really enjoyed their menu choices of local specialties like crab and pumpkins as well as innovative flavoring for traditional foods. Of course, they are famous for a yummy pumpkin mushroom bisque also. Lunch features a nice selection of salads and is a local favorite. My elderly mother also appreciates how quiet it is relative to most other restaurants.

Reserved a table for our triplets birthday dinner. Allen from BB even called earlier in the day to confirm. I asked for a round table for 5. We arrived and the table was missing a place setting and chair. Had to wait. Birthday(s) we're never acknowledged by wait staff or hostess. It's those special touches that make folks remember the place and want to return. Food was good but slow to arrive.

Really enjoyed my late lunch/early dinner experience. I took my assistant and colleague here to celebrate a birthday. Our reservations was at 2:45pm so I can't honestly rate ambience or noise level accurately but this site won't let me submit without that information. We were the only diners at the time. The food was spectacular. My flat iron steak was cooked perfectly due to the advice of our waiter. I like it medium and he recommended that I order med/rare to ensure it was to my liking. Also, we were there by 3 pm so we got to take advantage of happy hour drink specials.

We had not been to the Back Burner in quite some time because the last time we were there we had a terrible experience. We were never provided the "let us make it up to you" certificate that was promised. Since so much time had gone by, we thought we might give it another try. Our experience this time was much better. Both of us had the salad, which was good. The nuts were a bit spicy for me, but my husband loved them. We both ordered the smaller portions for dinner and they were fine. The service was much better this time. The only thing on the more negative side is that there are very few wine by the glass choices - one for most categories and two chardonnays.

We love the Back Burner To Go, but we were very unimpressed with the restaurant itself. The server was nice enough and the prices were not outrageous, but the food was bland or just not good. The stuffed mushrooms had a very strong taste of lemon that, I suppose, some people might like, but we thought it a complete waste of mushrooms and crab meat. We will not be going back.

We were impressed with our first visit in January so made a point of returning when in the area. Surf and turf special was very good and reasonably priced. Steak cooked to perfect order. Staff always very attentive and friendly. Appreciate the offering of two-sized portions for entrees; the smaller size is just the perfect amount of food, more than adequate.

7:15 reservation and they were out of their special--prime rib. NY strip steak was mentioned as an alternative, and, since it wasn't on the menu, we assumed the steaks would be the same price. They were priced at 150% of the prime rib. We didnt know that until the meal was over. What we did know was the steaks were huge, boneless, and topped with a great sauce, but the meat was terrible. The sinew was unlike ANY NY strip steak I have ever eaten. In fact, I honestly doubt that it was, in fact, NY strip steak. It made the steak difficult to chew, and I can't say the texture reminded me of fresh NY strip steak, either. This was our first timee there, and not knowing whether this experience was common, we chose not to complain.

We went for a dinner for a special occasion on the recommendation of friends, and we were not impressed with the service level or food quality. There was a prime rib special the night we went which my wife ordered, and it looked like it was cooked on the flat grill. A cut off the roast or charbroiled would have been preferred for the 'quality' of this restaurant. The Rock Bass was delicious, as with the sides and dessert. The bar was poorly stocked with what we would consider reasonable Burbons to have on the high end. We are new in the area and were hoping for a quality dinner in a relaxed atmosphere. We will keep looking, I'm sure we can find better for the price.
