A word from Bacco Ristorante
"When you pull back the curtain at the door of Bacco, you enter into a decidedly Italian world. Since it opened in 1993, Chef Vincenzo Cucco has been turning out delicious food, some of the best made to order risotto, pastas, etc. In all, Bacco is a top neighborhood restaurant and truly offers a meal to savor." -Michael Bauer, S.F Chronicle restaurant criticContinued

Diner Reviews
  • "The food was outstanding and the ambiance was great. My party had people with gluten and dairy restrictions, and they had plenty of delicious options to choose from."

  • "We had our usual great meal at Bacco, but this visit merits some constructive feedback. It's an odd complaint, but we actually had too much attention to our table, resulting in several instances of our table conversations being interrupted by a well-intentioned inquiry as to whether "everything is OK". We understand that staff were trying hard to assure that we were attended to, but we had 3 different waitpersons, plus a server and a bus person, who were checking in a little too frequently to make sure we were happy. While good attention is appreciated, it's is disconcerting to have one's flow of convivial table talk interrupted too many times. We love this place, but please, a little more air space between checkings in."

  • "This place is exactly the place you look for I think in a small authentic italian restaurant. Kinda hidden in the southern Castro district off of diamond street.Warm italian/american servers, a dining room staff that all pitched in and helped ensuring great service, and dishes that have passion and flavor in every bite. This place surpassed expectations. So happy we drove outside downtown to find this little gem. Kudo's to the chef and staff. I'll be recommending this place to lots of friends."

  • "We had dinner with a friend here at Bacco the other evening. The hostess was friendly when we arrived and sat us down and promptly a waiter arrived to ask about drinks and then the bread arrived. The bread was good and dipping oil. We ordered our bottle of wine and it came out shortly. Note that you should know your Italian wines for the menu was 99% Italian. Luckily I knew a little. Our first course was the octopus baked with a deep red sauce and the special were stuffed sardines. Both delicious and especially different. Dinner for us was either the black ink pasta with squid or the carbonara. We leaned towards the pasta since it stated they make their own pasta. They do. This is a neighborhood gem in the Noe Valley. Go!"

  • "Whether a special occasion or a spur of the moment dinner out, Bacco always delivers excellent cuisine that is constantly changing with the nightly specials. Very inventive with fresh, local ingredients. Service is outstanding and always makes you feel welcome."

  • "While it had been over six months, tonight's experience reminded me that we should visit Bacco more often. Great menu excellently executed and served."

  • "Bacco is a great neighborhood restaurant. Relatively recently there has been a bit of a change at the top and the results are all good. The food has been lovely and the service first rate. Their wines are reasonable and have always been great. Although I have always enjoyed Bacco the bar has been raised there and I would encourage you to try it."

  • "the service was great at first, except that I'm a bit deaf and the guy had a strong, presumably Italian, accent. But then he brought me the wrong entree, and tried to convince me that was what I ordered. He returned to the kitchen and immediately brought out the correct dish which had been there all along. Then later on, we ordered dessert and asked about a dessert wine, and he implied that he was going to let us try 2 options. Instead he brought us 2 full glasses, which we paid for. We almost finished them before he finally showed up with our desserts, which were pre-made and shouldn't have taken 15 minutes to bring out.. might be a good neighborhood place, but although none of us were unhappy with the food, none of us were excited."

  • "Great location, low noise, the food was amazing, and the server was extremely nice and very handsome. I swear he had to read the specials to me twice because I was distracted by his charm and thick accent. But enough of me being a creep! The food was great! I got the stuffed chicken and it was the tastiest moistest chicken I have ever had. Yes please. They sat us near the window and we were surrounded by the beautiful architecture of San Francisco's Noe Valley."

  • "I had wanted to go to Bacco for quite a while and finally had dinner on a Thursday evening. It was... fine. It was a bit disappointing because the food wasn't that great, wasn't that bad, just average. Very, very average. We had two appetizers. The cavolo (sauteed kale) was fine, but kind of bland. The crostino was tasty--but it was so simple, the kind of thing that it bothers me to pay for. Main course: she got the fregola (Sardinian pasta, clams, mussels, scallops, saffron, fresh tomato). It was fine, but the sauce was kind of Chef Boyardee-y. I got the risotto, which was actually quite good. Overall, we felt like we could have made everything at home, and probably better. Having said that: great service and good ambience."

  • "We were greeted with Italian charm, which held through the dinner. The food was excellent and the very fine bottle of wine that our friend purchased was served with attention to detail, yet the service was not intrusive. An evening that suited our group of four perfectly."

  • "Still a quiet, cozy, lovely port in the increasing storm that is the SF restaurant (and street) scene. Terrific Italian comfort food, done with a civilized flair, never a heavy hand. We shared a Bacco salad and both went with fish of the day, Petrale in lemon, wine, butter and capers, which let the delicate fish speak for itself. Perfect haricot vert and a few rounds of potatoes sautéed gently with onion & olive oil. We followed the waiter's suggestions for wines by the glass and were happy. Responding to my Open Table request, the staff marked a birthday with complimentary tiramisu (again, perfect and light). Next time, we'll try the generous 3-course Dining Menu. Lighting is very low, but that's a plus and adds to the calm environment."

  • "The light levels in the restaurant were ridiculously low. we could not read the menu or wine list. The waiter offered a clumsy flash light to read the menu by... when the food arrived ( it was delicious BTW) we honestly could not see what we were eating as some of the serving dishes were a dark clay color... perhaps this is someones idea of ambiance? BTW the service and food are consistently very good here."

  • "And enjoyed it both times. We brought couples who had not been there before and they were pleased, also. We'll definitely keep coming as the food is good, the prices reasonable and the service warm and friendly."

  • "My husband, daughter and I went to Bacco for my husband's birthday dinner. It was our first time there, and we all LOVED the food, the service and the atmosphere. It was perfect; just what we hoped it would be - a much-appreciated, romantic spot, favored by a local clientele, with authentic, fresh Italian recipes and an upscale vibe. It's a cozy place where you can getting away from the busy, city scene - in a quiet neighborhood of SF - and step into a simple, but elegant space, with classic, rural Mediterranean style. Ceilings are a nice height, so it feels roomy. We sat in the first dining room near the door, where a trompe l'oeil mural of a pastoral tapestry sets a warm golden hue. Loved it! A thoroughly yummy place. We will be back!"

  • "Reservation times are respected and owner is warm and welcoming. Seating is very tight and waiters continually bump into the back of your chair. Menu is restrained to a few items they do well, but not a lot of choices for vegetarians. However it's near where we live and certainly we'll go there again."

  • "Bacco has a special risotto every night and it's always so creamy and delicious---especially when truffles are on the menu. Bacco has always had great pasta. it recently revamped its menu offereing a number go more sophisticated, well-executed selections in addition to pasta."

  • "I reviewed this restaurant on Check Please, Bay Area in 2008 - still classic Italian cuising, comfortable, and wonderul service with a smile and warm ambience. Noe Valley is lucky to have such a gem. Much better than other Italian restaurants in neighborhood"

  • "We loved going to Bacco's recently for my birthday. We had not been there for years and decided it was more fun and relaxing to go local in Noe Valley. We walked to the restaurant which was a pleasure. It was a wonderful dining experience. The ambiance was warm and friendly, the service was great, and the food was regional and delicious. My husband and I shared two seafood pasta dishes which were delicious and the deserts were delicious. We are looking forward to returning there in the near future!"

  • "We were a group of six people, celebrating the visit of an old friend. And did we have a GREAT time. They accommodated our request to serve the food family style, and that way we got to taste a lot of different dishes. All were delicious. One of the couples are real foodies from down on the Peninsula, and they spoke most enthusiastically about wanting to return to Bacco. Our waiter, Raffaele, gauged our mood perfectly, and was a big part of the fun we had. And the owner made us feel like we all were long lost friends. We go there a lot and are never disappointed."

  • "We had not dined at Bacco in some time, and we're pleased that it was even better than we remembered. Now remodeled, it is a handsome, welcoming space where adults can converse easily (on a Wednesday) and the staff is friendly and attentive. Better yet, the cuisine is well sourced and very ably prepared. We shared four starters, three pastas and a risotto; all were terrific and almost too much to eat, overall. My calamari with canellini starter was toothsome and the arugula was dressed with restraint. My veal agnolotti was richly sauced with cream and veal jus, and delicious. The mushroom risotto was deeply flavorful, barely soupy and quite satisfying. We didn't get to the secondi or try the prix fix menu, but I look forward to that."

  • "Was looking for a romantic, but not over the top, restaurant to go for a dinner date. We were promptly greeted and seated as soon as we entered. Our waitress was very friendly but not to the point where it's "too much." Both of our meals (and glasses of wine) were quite tasty. Will definitely return."
