A word from Babylon
Inspired by the opulence of the ancient Mesopotamian city of Babylon and the legendary wonderment of the Hanging Gardens comes a conceptual restaurant, lounge, and event space unique in its kind to downtown Raleigh's dining and entertainment landscape.
Hidden in plain sight on the cusp of downtown's Glenwood South District and the Capitol District, surrounded by a wall of brick and cedar, sets a seductive outdoor dining terrace exuding the sophistication of a southern European courtyard and the ornate tones of the palaces of Marrakesh and Fez.
An embellished oasis welcoming all to an unparalleled experience, Babylon inhabits a more than century old structure that has been painstakingly restored, reflecting respect for the building's original façade while seamlessly incorporating regal elements, all imported from Morocco.

  • "We had hoped to eat outside. When we arrived there was a very loud group of people there so we ate at the bar. The fish was good but very bony. The bartender was very attentive both at the bar and at the table."

  • "Nice place to eat out on the patio by a pool and enjoy some Moroccan food."

  • "Beautiful restaurant and courtyard is nice for outdoor dining and drinks. Food is excellent though a little on the pricey side for entrees."

  • "I did give a 2 star (Fair) because our waitress was not all that attentive over the course of the evening. She seemed distracted. However, people have bad days and she wasn't horrible. I suspect that it was only a blip for both the restaurant and the individual waitress. Just worthy of mentioning so if the management reads these reviews that might consider a pre-shift pep talk to the staff along the lines of, "Hey, if you are having a bad day, take a deep breathe. Relax and try and not let it affect our customers." My two cents."

  • "Must get the bastilla appetizer and the chicken tangible. Also tea service is awesome there! Love Babylon!"

  • "We enjoyed the food very much. The service was not first class but entirely acceptable. A bit pricey but not unreasonably so. We went for a tapas approach in order to taste a variety of dishes. The calamari was very good and abundant. The charcuterie was also plentiful and very enjoyable. The shrimp were slightly overcooked as was the lamb but the sauces were great."

  • "Food was a little on the skimpy side, but verfy good. Great , and good service. Different brunch menu, but very good.Really enjoyed Fathers Day Brunch. Will definitely return in the evening after dark to see it all lit up."

  • "We sampled from a table d'hôte menu offered during restaurant week. We were disappointed by the food and the atmosphere. To be fair, I believe this restaurant might be a compelling destination, notwithstanding the food that we sampled, if you arrive late and the outdoor seating area is hopping. We went for an early dinner and had the place to ourselves - and by all appearances we were an inconvenience to the restaurant staff who were busily moving tables and chairs around us as we tried to talk over the blade saw that was buzzing in the background. Our experience could have been an unfortunate aberration, but I would advise thinking carefully before indulging in Babylon."

  • "Would have been a 5 across the board, but we had to wait quite a while for third course. Also had to ask for refills on water several times. Staff was very polite, but not as attentive as they should have been."

  • "Pros: great venue, good parking, downtown location, attentive staff Cons: HORRIBLE music a suggestion..why not play some Moroccon/ Middle Eastern music??? Maurading pigeons( really cute birds..but frightened guests by hopping on table while we were eating) food was bland, waiter didn't get bread unless we asked. F"

  • "Had a reservation, was on time and sat right away. Our waitress took forever to come over and get our drinks, the drinks took forever & waited to order, took a long time to get our appetizer and was not that good. We ordered dinner and waited two hours with no food or even saw our waitress again, no water refills, asked for a glass of wine when we ordered the food never came, When we saw the waitress passing by we asked if we are getting our food and it has been so long she said it is the kitchen fault not mine so I asked for the check to pay for the appetizer and the wine she just hand it to us with an attitude which we should not even pay for anything, two hours wait and left without eating."

  • "I went with a group of friends -- 4 of us total. The food was very good throughout all courses, appetizer, entree, and dessert. However, the service was extremely slow all evening, and the restaurant was not incredibly busy. We ended up spending about 2 1/2 hours total at the restaurant."

  • "Saturday night 7:30 reservations set fast. The waitress did not come to our table for 10 minutes. We ordered Diet Coke and two glasses of wine it was 8 o'clock before we got either. We were 25 feet away from the bar. waitress was working hard they had her inside with tables and all the way out in the patio. My Diet Coke was flat so I decided I was going to get a beer I waited didn't see the waitress for 10 minutes so I got up and went and got my own beer. They had our waitress busy running food out to the patio. look behind the outside bar it was filthy where they put the syrup for the drinks it's like equipment needs repair and I stood there 10 minutes and never got anyone to wait on me two people at the bar besides me."

  • "Babylon provides delicious Moroccan food in a great convenient setting. Just off capital, in a wonderfully decorated building, one could forget that they were in Raleigh and be transported to a modern day yet ancient Babylonian feeling restaurant."

  • "We went for restaurant week and was expecting a great meal. What we got was delicious food and very confused service. Our food took about an hour to come out and when it did, two appetizers were missing, the salad (which shouldn't have had nuts) had nuts, and no one knew who had what. Our waiter was really nice and knowledgable but we only saw him maybe 3 times in the almost two hours we spent there. We had to wait another 45 min for our dessert and they had run out of what we ordered. Although they gave us some extra ones to make up for it, we still sat there, waiting for the majority of the second hour. I wish i could say the place was swamped. The food was great but they really need to work on the service. "

  • "The atmosphere and food were great! The service, however, was horrible. There was one bartender on a Saturday night. We had reservations for 7:30, got a table around 8:30 and finally left around 11:00...and we weren't just sitting and chatting after dinner. This place would be amazing if they had better service. Our server and bartender were nice, but it took so long to get service or our food that it ruined the experience. Don't think I'll be going back."

  • "Service was horrible. Went for restaurant week to try the menu. Food was good not worth the price for the taste. There are better places in Raleigh only good thing was the outdoor patio. "

  • "My fiancé and I had a reservation at 7:15 and didn't get a drink menu till 7:50 after reminding out waitress the second time, this was just the start of how long it took all night! When I ordered a beer they were out of the 3 bottles I wanted; how do you run out of bottles of 3 different beers early on a Friday! Besides that the flavors in all the food were great, but you can tell the appetizers & deserts weren't given much care from the restrauant week menu. The shrimp ceviche had great flavor, but the shrimp we're overdone and chewy.. The braised brisket and cauliflower was on point, and great! As for the desert, the almond rolls we're overdone as well. For $80 for 2,I was let down with the experience... You pay for the outdoor seating!"

  • "We were planning a dinner out w neighbors and wanted something different. Husband checked OT and Babylon had good reviews and we were intriged by the comments on the patio. So glad we went. We all loved it. Good food, good service & amazing patio dining. Great for friends or romantic. "

  • "This place seems to have so much potential but was mildly disappointed. I ordered the fish of the day and it was over-cooked and my wife ordered the filet and it was undercooked and cold when brought to our table. The Mediterranean salad was excellent as was the side food with our meats. Waitress was very friendly as was the other staff. Beer selection is very limited but wine selection was excellent. Prices were too high for what was delivered. Sorry but overall we will not go back or recommend to any friends."

  • "We sat outdoors; lovely patio. Our waiter seemed a nice enough person, but clueless. He came back twice when the wine we ordered wasn't available and recommended one at twice the price. We wound up ordering wine by the glass. Calamari was tough and rubbery. He asked how it was, we answered honestly, he said he was sorry and that was the end of that. Waiter couldn't answer questions about menu (is the chicken boneless?) and meaning of Moroccan words; we ordered pizza; just leaving then would have been a better idea. I think this is a good place for people who can appreciate gimics, like food served on very colorful plates with stovetop tops. Vegetarians will be at a loss if they'd like something other than rice or cous-cous. "

  • "This was our first trip to Babylon, but it certainly won't be our last. There is nothing else like it in the Raleigh area. Incredible food and atmosphere. The only thing lacking was the draft beer options. Would love to see a more extensive wine selection too, however the 2 wines we sampled were wonderful. Will absolutely be back!"

  • "Go to Babylon for the beautiful, exotic, & romantic courtyard. It's truly amazing, esp as nighttime descends on the scene. Decent menu & prices w some unusual items, though the food often seems overcooked. The courtyard views & a nice btl. of red wine or cocktails make the food almost inconsequential to having a special experience."

  • "Babylon was fantastic. The scenery outside and indoors is spectacular, especially the high ceiling room and the beautiful designs. Our waitress was not at all friendly, but everyone else seemed more than willing to make our experience as enjoyable as possible. The food had so much variety, so many colors, it was unique in the best way. I will most likely be returning to Babylon."

  • "The food we had was magnificent. We were there on a night that they had a private party on the veranda, so we had no choice but to eat inside. Service could have been better, and my husband was very disappointed that there was not one domestic beer on the menu to pick. I do understand that it is a Moroccan restaurant, but 1 really would be nice. I thought the portions were good, but he left hungry. Too pricey for the amount of food he got, but overall I liked it."

  • "Babylon is a gem of a restaurant, a former warehouse beautifully restored by the owner, Samad. The outdoor space is wonderful for drinks, dinner, and brunch. Our Mother's Day brunch was excellent there; a good variety of dishes, and simply outstanding service by the whole team. "

  • "We were there on a near prefect night for outdoor dining and enjoyed it very much. We were surprised to see so few other diners there. The food was a little disappointing(tasteless ratatouille, tough meat) but the service and accommodations were first rate. We will need to go again to see how any of these would be affected by larger crowds."

  • "The food here is fantastic -- all of the dishes at our table were equally delightful. I'm especially fond on the lamb tangine, but the steak was tender and succulent."

  • "I've been to Babylon several times for dinner and really enjoyed their tasty dishes. Just watch out for some of the spicy sauces! This time we went for Sunday brunch and loved it. The Moroccan pancakes are heavenly - buttery with honey, almonds and Nutella! We had to order seconds. And bottomless mimosas are a bargain."

  • "Lovely place, OK food and super friendly servicers good wine list. Our server saved the night by asking bikers in parking lot (who were not customers) with conflicting loud music to lower thier music. Sunday nights are otherwise pretty low key."

  • "Food, atmosphere and service was good. However, for what you get everything was very overpriced, from dinners to deserts and coffee. I certainly would not list this as one of my top 5 restaurants in Raleigh."
