A word from Babylon
Inspired by the opulence of the ancient Mesopotamian city of Babylon and the legendary wonderment of the Hanging Gardens comes a conceptual restaurant, lounge, and event space unique in its kind to downtown Raleigh's dining and entertainment landscape.
Hidden in plain sight on the cusp of downtown's Glenwood South District and the Capitol District, surrounded by a wall of brick and cedar, sets a seductive outdoor dining terrace exuding the sophistication of a southern European courtyard and the ornate tones of the palaces of Marrakesh and Fez.
An embellished oasis welcoming all to an unparalleled experience, Babylon inhabits a more than century old structure that has been painstakingly restored, reflecting respect for the building's original façade while seamlessly incorporating regal elements, all imported from Morocco.

  • "Reminded us of a true Middle Eastern restaurant where table is yours for the evening and service pace matches."

  • "My granddaughter and I went and as soon as we saw the sign and building we knew we had found a great place for us. We had a 9:30pm reservation due to work schedule and the parking lot looked as if it were 7pm. We ate around the pool and the food and lighting were just right. Her response afterwards was that she was going again."

  • "Loved the atmosphere inside and out on the patio. Music an dancing on the patio were nice but the hookahs that came out later in the evening were a distraction. We ate on the patio and it was a warm/muggy evening...outdoor ceiling fans would be a welcomed addition. The hostess did help by moving some freestanding fans to help, and was most appreciated. The bartender was very helpful and knowledgeable. Loved the atmosphere."

  • "Heard about Babylon and decided to try for our anniversary. Asked for patio seating but it was quite got and muggy. Other than looking out the open gate door to the traffic it was a very scenic and quaint place. Wife had tagine chicken which was excellent, I had lamb medallions which were a little tough and not much seasoning. Had these chicken wraps for appetizer and that was best part of the meal! Good drink selection too"

  • "We went for the special menu during a restaurant week and the food was good. But I asked for beer that would be on tap and the bartender suggested and brought one that was in a bottle. I ordered fish listed as salmon and it looked and tasted like cod. In all fairness, they did give us a dish of the salmon later and did not charge for the beer."

  • "We sat outside, next to the pool. The food was excellent. We all had lamb in one form or another. The appetizers were also excellent. The overall bill was very reasonable considering the excellent food. The only negative was the rumble of the trucks ouside on the highway."

  • "The food was very good, even though my salmon was raw in the center. The location is a hard and twisted right turn off Capital Blvd. right when it turns into Dawson. I barely saw it to turn in. Very easy to miss. The outside dining area has ample space, with a separate bar and small pool. However, the guy smoking a disgusting cigar right by the door put an end to any notion to sit outside."

  • "We had a nice dining experience at Babylon once again. The food has been consistently delicious each time we have visited. This was our 3rd time there. I had the salmon special - salmon cooked in paper and seasoned perfectly ! And we also tried the lamb kabobs appetizer and they were delicious as well. I had the spanish margarita and it was tasty. Ceci had the Pear Deluxe and loved it."

  • "One of the best for outdoor dining. Very interesting food with Moraccan influences but lots of choices as well. The Chicken specialty is worth a try - great and like nowhere else I've been to. Check out the interesting interior as well even if you eat outside. The appetizer platter is a little small but otherwise the menu is fantastic."

  • "We always have enjoyed coming here, but on our last trip they were out of the reasonably priced wines on their menu. We tried ordering two different bottles and they didn't have either. Instead they suggested an $80 bottle that was twice the price point. In the end we opted for wine by the glass, but there were no comps or discount to try to make it right."

  • "We went to Babylon to celebrate our 4 year date anniversary. Had a wonderful time and enjoyed the atmosphere and surroundings. Staff were friendly very knowledgeable about the food. The food was excellent, from the calamari appetizer to the entrees - lamb tagine with couscous and lamb chops with grilled vegetables, meats were flavorful and cooked to perfection. We would have liked to of sat outside and enjoyed the evening and pool area, but it was raining and the weather wouldn't allow it. We plan on going back and relaxing next month."

  • "This is the best scene I've encountered in NC. Great vibe and energy with awesome outdoor bar. The apps are great and drinks are good, but the entrees were bland and expensive. The service was stretched thin and hostess was totally lost. Go for the great bar scene and get some appetizers."

  • "This is our second time at Babylon's and unfortunately, this time was a little disappointing. The food was not as good as the first time, and I'm not sure I would return. Atmosphere is great though!"

  • "I loved the ambiance of the restaurant. We sat outside, and it was one of the better outdoor dining areas of Raleigh. There were some pestering bees (which are hard to controll) but other than that, loved the atmosphere. The service was subpar: the waiter spoke so softly and timidly we could barely hear the specials he was trying to sell. We waited about 45 minutes for our appetizers. But before our appetizers even came, he was taking our dinner order. Then our dinners came out before we finished our appetizers/salads. It was just awkward. But the servers were very friendly and accomodating. The food was very good as well."

  • "We had hoped to eat outside. When we arrived there was a very loud group of people there so we ate at the bar. The fish was good but very bony. The bartender was very attentive both at the bar and at the table."

  • "Beautiful restaurant and courtyard is nice for outdoor dining and drinks. Food is excellent though a little on the pricey side for entrees."

  • "I did give a 2 star (Fair) because our waitress was not all that attentive over the course of the evening. She seemed distracted. However, people have bad days and she wasn't horrible. I suspect that it was only a blip for both the restaurant and the individual waitress. Just worthy of mentioning so if the management reads these reviews that might consider a pre-shift pep talk to the staff along the lines of, "Hey, if you are having a bad day, take a deep breathe. Relax and try and not let it affect our customers." My two cents."

  • "We enjoyed the food very much. The service was not first class but entirely acceptable. A bit pricey but not unreasonably so. We went for a tapas approach in order to taste a variety of dishes. The calamari was very good and abundant. The charcuterie was also plentiful and very enjoyable. The shrimp were slightly overcooked as was the lamb but the sauces were great."

  • "Food was a little on the skimpy side, but verfy good. Great , and good service. Different brunch menu, but very good.Really enjoyed Fathers Day Brunch. Will definitely return in the evening after dark to see it all lit up."

  • "Pros: great venue, good parking, downtown location, attentive staff Cons: HORRIBLE music a suggestion..why not play some Moroccon/ Middle Eastern music??? Maurading pigeons( really cute birds..but frightened guests by hopping on table while we were eating) food was bland, waiter didn't get bread unless we asked. F"

  • "The atmosphere and food were great! The service, however, was horrible. There was one bartender on a Saturday night. We had reservations for 7:30, got a table around 8:30 and finally left around 11:00...and we weren't just sitting and chatting after dinner. This place would be amazing if they had better service. Our server and bartender were nice, but it took so long to get service or our food that it ruined the experience. Don't think I'll be going back."

  • "We went for restaurant week and was expecting a great meal. What we got was delicious food and very confused service. Our food took about an hour to come out and when it did, two appetizers were missing, the salad (which shouldn't have had nuts) had nuts, and no one knew who had what. Our waiter was really nice and knowledgable but we only saw him maybe 3 times in the almost two hours we spent there. We had to wait another 45 min for our dessert and they had run out of what we ordered. Although they gave us some extra ones to make up for it, we still sat there, waiting for the majority of the second hour. I wish i could say the place was swamped. The food was great but they really need to work on the service. "

  • "Saturday night 7:30 reservations set fast. The waitress did not come to our table for 10 minutes. We ordered Diet Coke and two glasses of wine it was 8 o'clock before we got either. We were 25 feet away from the bar. waitress was working hard they had her inside with tables and all the way out in the patio. My Diet Coke was flat so I decided I was going to get a beer I waited didn't see the waitress for 10 minutes so I got up and went and got my own beer. They had our waitress busy running food out to the patio. look behind the outside bar it was filthy where they put the syrup for the drinks it's like equipment needs repair and I stood there 10 minutes and never got anyone to wait on me two people at the bar besides me."

  • "Had a reservation, was on time and sat right away. Our waitress took forever to come over and get our drinks, the drinks took forever & waited to order, took a long time to get our appetizer and was not that good. We ordered dinner and waited two hours with no food or even saw our waitress again, no water refills, asked for a glass of wine when we ordered the food never came, When we saw the waitress passing by we asked if we are getting our food and it has been so long she said it is the kitchen fault not mine so I asked for the check to pay for the appetizer and the wine she just hand it to us with an attitude which we should not even pay for anything, two hours wait and left without eating."
    Dined on 6/7/2014
  • "Would have been a 5 across the board, but we had to wait quite a while for third course. Also had to ask for refills on water several times. Staff was very polite, but not as attentive as they should have been."

  • "Babylon provides delicious Moroccan food in a great convenient setting. Just off capital, in a wonderfully decorated building, one could forget that they were in Raleigh and be transported to a modern day yet ancient Babylonian feeling restaurant."

  • "Service was horrible. Went for restaurant week to try the menu. Food was good not worth the price for the taste. There are better places in Raleigh only good thing was the outdoor patio. "

  • "I went with a group of friends -- 4 of us total. The food was very good throughout all courses, appetizer, entree, and dessert. However, the service was extremely slow all evening, and the restaurant was not incredibly busy. We ended up spending about 2 1/2 hours total at the restaurant."

  • "My fiancé and I had a reservation at 7:15 and didn't get a drink menu till 7:50 after reminding out waitress the second time, this was just the start of how long it took all night! When I ordered a beer they were out of the 3 bottles I wanted; how do you run out of bottles of 3 different beers early on a Friday! Besides that the flavors in all the food were great, but you can tell the appetizers & deserts weren't given much care from the restrauant week menu. The shrimp ceviche had great flavor, but the shrimp we're overdone and chewy.. The braised brisket and cauliflower was on point, and great! As for the desert, the almond rolls we're overdone as well. For $80 for 2,I was let down with the experience... You pay for the outdoor seating!"

  • "We sampled from a table d'hôte menu offered during restaurant week. We were disappointed by the food and the atmosphere. To be fair, I believe this restaurant might be a compelling destination, notwithstanding the food that we sampled, if you arrive late and the outdoor seating area is hopping. We went for an early dinner and had the place to ourselves - and by all appearances we were an inconvenience to the restaurant staff who were busily moving tables and chairs around us as we tried to talk over the blade saw that was buzzing in the background. Our experience could have been an unfortunate aberration, but I would advise thinking carefully before indulging in Babylon."

  • "This place seems to have so much potential but was mildly disappointed. I ordered the fish of the day and it was over-cooked and my wife ordered the filet and it was undercooked and cold when brought to our table. The Mediterranean salad was excellent as was the side food with our meats. Waitress was very friendly as was the other staff. Beer selection is very limited but wine selection was excellent. Prices were too high for what was delivered. Sorry but overall we will not go back or recommend to any friends."
