It offers three-star dining that redefines and reinvents the principles of Italian cuisine for 21st century America. Diner Reviews
  • "We dinned there just 2 nights ago and I have to say the service was fantastic. But the food wasn't all that. for the table we ordered beef check Ravioli, sweet potato Ravioli and Lobster pasta, all good but definitely not WOW. If only the Raviolis were stuffed a little more so you could taste it. I don't think Mr. Batali would serve himself such chintzy Raviolis. Grilled octopus was again good but nothing you can get somewhere else. Their Pork chops was very good. Great wine list. Would I go their again? NO. Too many other fantastic italian restaurants in the city to go there again."

  • "Unfortunately, our lunch at Babbo was very disappointing. The service was good, the ambience was ok, not great, but the food was at best mediocre and the portions were smaller than most good restaurants and Babbo is supposed to be better than most. Sometimes we excuse one not so good meal by saying it was a fluke. In this case, since there are so many really good Italian restaurants, I would not give it a second chance. In addition, the menu was fairly limited."

  • "Our experience did not live up to the hype. We were sat at 10pm, 30 minutes late. I was very familiar with Babbo's reputation. I was prepared for a large crowd & even the wait to sit. What I was not prepared for was the quality of the food. My biggest complaint was that our first course, two pastas, were weak. My husband's Buccatini al'Amatriciana was overcooked, the guanciale undercooked & minimal and the tomato sauce was bland. Inexcusable. My Beef Cheek Ravioli had the flavors of beef cheeks & squab pate, but absolutely no truffles. They should not have been listed as an ingredient. I studied culinary arts in Florence & have lived there. I was expecting the same extraordinary food you get in Italy. This was not even close."

  • "Last week we went to Babbo on a Thursday night at 5:30 (before a 7:30 show). Our cocktails were made perfectly, and our waitress was very accommodating and knowledgeable. My husband and I enjoyed splurging on a little pasta - they were happy to pack 1/2 of the portion before serving it for me. The garganelli with rapini and sausage was amazing. The scallops were just right, and the sauteed greens balanced everything out. My husband's black linguini with shrimp was a bit spicy and perfect for him. The corn fregula - with a little semolina was very nicely balanced as well. We opted out of dessert, although it all looked great."

  • "Until yesterday, I've only had dinner at Babbo, and every meal has always delicious. I took my out-of-town mom for lunch here, and the food was just as excellent as any evening experience. Service was efficient and polite, and the vibe was relaxed yet professional. The dining room was not very full, around 5 tables or so, but it didn't feel awkward or empty at all. I will definitely be coming back soon for their lunch prix-fixe."

  • "Babbo continues to have a very interesting eclectic crowd. Food remains astonishingly creative with interesting combinations and flavors. Wine list is excellent and wines are stored at the correct temperature. Despite being very crowded the tables in the dining rooms are spaced comfortably apart. The waiters are very attentive and friendly."

  • "This was our second visit as we are from Ontario, Canada. Previously we experienced the winter menu. This time, we experienced even more delights. My braised beef melted in my mouth. The pistachio and chocolate semi feed do was heavenly! A wonderful evening thanks to our gracious and informative server. We will be back!"

  • "We enjoyed a 30th wedding anniversary dinner with excellent service, fine food but most memorable, an excellent sommelier who matched Italian wines and dishes spectacularly well. We dined at a restaurant costing 3 times more later in the week and did not find the wine or pairing anything like as excellent."

  • "My grown daughter and I ate lunch Saturday, July 5. We had 12:15pm reservations and I thought it would be early but we walked in and the place was jamming. Seated in the main dining room we ordered the tasting menu and enjoyed every bite! The food was superb and the service was phenomenal. We had a great time and will be returning."

  • "I decided to treat my very good friend for her birthday and both of us were very happy with our experience at Babbo. I've been to a lot of restaurants including most of 3-stared restaurants and I must say dishes we order at Babbo were as good as what they offer. Our waiter was kind and attentive but somehow a little awkward... But overall, I'm very pleased."

  • "Everything we got was delicious and nicely-presented. Waitstaff were courteous, although somewhat hampered by the relatively small space. I particularly liked the crispy branzino, and the desserts were fantastic."

  • "Girlfriend and I decided to try out Babbo as it was a Michelin 1 Star restaurant on July 2, 2014 for dinner. We each ordered the traditional tasting menu upon being seated. Since it was a Michelin 1 star restaurant, we expected a high level of service. However, it was a huge disappointment! When the server took our plates away from each course, the server clanked the knife and fork so loud beside her ear. In additional, another server came to refill our water glass and did not make the effort to go around the table to refill mine. As a result, water splashed all over our plates when the server reached over the table to refill my water glass. Food was mediocore, as my pasta was not al dente and was on the hard side. Would not come back again"

  • "The dining experience was incredible. I had a wonderful time and everything that one wants to review for an outstanding restaurant Babbo meets those expectations. I will be back again and again as long I can get a reservation."

  • "After many attempts finally were able to reserve. Were looking forward to a memorable evening. Bottom line: Surprised that the food quality fell short of expectations; specially being a Battali venue. Papardelle w/Mushrooms, after unsticking them (were in a "clump) was SWIMMING in butter; the Spaghetti w/Vongole's (clams) taste was not what I was expecting. Have had this dish dozens of times and know what to expect (lived in Italy for 4 years) Perhaps it had to do with the excessive "chicken broth" that was at the bottom of the bowl! The Branzino was good; the wine list impressive and service was terrific. Pricing pretty much in line with what you would expect to see. Not for a repeat visit; too many other restaurants in NYC to experience"

  • "Exquisite in every way. And what a wine list! The sardines and pork chop are extraordinary."

  • "Upon arrival at our reserved time of 9.15 we were told to wait for a further 25 minutes until a table was free.We were told to wait and have a drink at bar which was overcrowded and with people dining at bar it was impossible to order a drink and stand comfortably and drink..there were no seats so standing was awkward. Later a table was available but some 35 mins later"

  • "We had the tasting menu with wine pairings and everything was delicious. My first roasted radish ever, pappardelle with morels was to die for, excellent and tender port, and olive oil cake was out of this world. The wines were all interesting and different. Excellent service."

  • "After much research, we decided to entertain some important investors here for dinner. The extremely rude host would not seat us until all had arrived even though the place was half empty. Therefore, we stood in awkward corners as there was no waiting area for about 30 minutes (the barstools were taken). We were also not allowed to add a chair to our table when another investor wanted to join even though we had reserved 6 and only 5 were seated. I realize that this is NY and sometimes things are done this way but I am from the south where we believe in hospitality. There was none to speak of here. The food was great but not worth being treated like a child."

  • "I just can not put my finger on what is wrong with this restaurant, servie we mediocre, the bartender mixolgy was average or less than average, the food was good, but not excellent. The wine was however. overall I would recommend going to Carbone instead desert was average at best We come to NYC at least once a year and I would not return."

  • "Would have preferred waitstaff and busboys with more fluency in English for this type of establishment."

  • "I went with a couple of friends to try the lunch tasting menu and we were a bit dissapointed with the food. The appetizer seemed like it had been prepared hours ago, the pasta dish was not up to our standards and the pork loin was tough. Fortunately when the desserts came we were amazingly surprised. The olive oil cake, the rhubarb crostata and the chocolate pistacchio semifreddo were wonderfully plated and tasted heavenly. It is a real shame the first three courses were not as good. Service ans waiter were wonderful."

  • "Fine dining, remarkable though pricey wine list, and attentive service. Matches most of the best Italian spots in the city. Upstairs dining room appeared a bit more casual (touristy) than downstairs. Overall a very solid choice among Mario's various haunts."

  • "Everything about our lunch was perfect! Service was so good we felt welcome from the time we made the reservation to when we walked out the door. And the food was even better than we expected, and our expectations were high!"

  • "They seem to have lost a step or two from years ago. Not overly friendly, the menu was a confusing, food temperature was not even, and they still have that tiny washroom (nuts). Nice wine list and a helpful sommelier. I just think that Michael White's places are a little better."

  • "Babbo is very good -- but by reputation, it's fantastic. And no, it's not that great. Its Italian cucina is deftly prepared, and its wait staff is attentive. Even so, the restaurant displays a pretension that isn't deserved. I can think of nearly a dozen ristorantes in Manhattan that are as good, and a couple that are even better. Moreover, unlike Babbo, few rivals assume diners are ignorant and need everything explained even before questions are asked. And though Babbo's food is presumed by the staff to be glorious and I ate everything I was served, by the same token I tasted nothing I'd order again."

  • "After weeks of trying to get a reservation that wasn't extremely early or late we were able to get a 6 PM time slot. We were seated upstairs and thankful for that since when we left the downstairs was three deep at the bar and the noise level and very tight tables was horrid. This is one of those places where you don't dine in comfort with the ability to converse and hear the people at your table. Here you eat and scream to be heard. However, people must love it because you can't get a table. Food was very good but not exceptional. A sardine appetizer was a joke and should not be on the menu. Three very small and thin sardines were very disappointing. Service was very good and the place was well staffed"

  • "Patchy quality throughout meal. Bread was cold and chewy. Rucola salad plain and one dimensional (compared to beautiful flavorful well seasoned salad we had at Osteria Morini). Garganelli and black spaghetti saving graces of meal. We enjoyed those. Waiter abandoned us after taking order (possibly noting our smaller bill amount... 1 glass prosecco for husband as I don't drink), so given all of above we decided not to stay for dessert. Was disappointed as had much better experience at O. Morini with all courses. Even more dismayed considering really looked forward to treating husband to Babbo for his birthday, and neither of us enjoyed it as much as we'd like."

  • "We tried the tasting menu and ordered our own wine selection. Everything was fresh and tasted amazing! We will come back again and again! My favorite Italian place in NYC!"

  • "Very well planned and executed menu and world class wine list in a refined but unpretentious dining room. The service staff is excellent and especially helpful choosing the wine. Hard to think of a better overall experience. Very expensive but worth it!"

  • "We had a very enjoyable meal at Babbo. We had the tasting menu, which we also had three years ago. We enjoyed it but felt it didn't quite match our last visit. Great atmosphere in the restaurant."

  • "DECORE IS A BIT TIRED AND most OF THE DISHES WERE AMAZING. Babbo's greens were tough and without much flavor to my surprise. The food was a bit inconsistent in quality and the décor (like the rug) needs an update"

  • "Babbo didn't disappoint. It was delicious. We'll be back to do the pasta tasting menu next time. The service was amazing! Everyone was so knowledgeable about the food, and it's ingredients. If you're a vegetarian there is a pasta tasting menu that isn't advertised, but the server knew it inside out and helped with any substitutions. The sorbet/gelato sampler was out of this world and no small portions either. We can't wait to be back, but good luck getting reservations at peak times."

  • "My new husband and I visited as part of our honeymoon trip and, yes, partially because I am a fan of Mario Batali. The service was nothing short of amazing, our every need was addressed immediately and we appreciated visits from the sommelier. I ordered the spaghettini with lobster (highly recommended!) and my husband got the skirt steak (so good!). For dessert we ordered the gelato sampling and they wrote "congratulations" on the plate in chocolate. I really felt the final bill was more than worth the meal and experience, and I would definitely go back."

  • "Really enjoyed our meal at Babbo. Food was very fresh and interesting, without being overwrought or pretentious. Service was excellent. Our waiter was friendly and attentive, with helpful suggestions, which truly made our experience memorable. Definitely coming back on next trip to NYC."

  • "i had great expectations and all of them were met, if not exceeded. I had the ravioli with sweet potato and amaretti and it was delicious. I had a minor issue but it was resolved immediately, without question, and they more than made it up to me. I would definitely recommend this place for anyone looking for a place to eat in NYC."

  • "I'm officially over the Batali restaurant experience. The food was no better than I can make at home and the service was absolutely poor. I had lunch there with my wife and after our appetizer plates were cleared more then 30 minutes passed before our entrees arrived. The manager came over and apologized for the delay AFTER the entrees finally did arrive but avoided eye contact prior to that. No attempt was made to make amends for the wasted time. I had beef short rib raviolis with black truffles (which were obviously out of a bottle or can) and the dish was swimming in butter. It was borderline inedible."

  • "Nice spot, really had high expectations as it is difficult to get a reservation. Food was good but "not over the top" and skimpy portions. Servers were nice but constantly confused as to who order what. I was surprised that although I told the reservation desk that we had guests with food allergies that they did not recall this until we reminded them before we ordered. Also, the matrie de and staff at the front of restaurant appeared were somewhat pretentious. Wouldn't seat 4 of us until the 5th person arrived; then we had a shopping bag at our our table no where near any of the other tables, and they asked us to check it which we refused to do. Overall not likely to return."
