B44Gem Among GemsVery charming, authentic, delicious Catalan Spanish food. B44 is one of over half a dozen restaurants in the uber charming Beltran Place - an alley which was once styled San Francisco's French Quarter. No fusion here, or maybe at some of the others places go in for that, but this is old world charming, not stuffy in the least, great neighborhood restaurant. Paella the best since my wife last visited Spain. We received superb service, but the waiter admitted that maybe that was a weak point . . . sometimes. Highly recommended. He was especially surprised that our daughter really had an appetite for the octopus and the mussels. He was patient and even put her to work walking over to collect the tab with her.
The food was as I remembered it - full of flavor. I was underwhelmed by the paella dish, but the 2 appetizers were tasty - potatas bravas, crispy and perfect and the ceviche had the right amount of acid.
The other dishes at the table were the beef with chimichurri - having just returned from Buenos Aires, the chimichurri could ahve been more fresh and not so paste-like, but all counties do this differently. It is very casual but the food is delicious and the services great. The food has unusual flavors and there's an excellent selection. Walking down the (very safe) alley transports you to Europe and the small cafes one finds there. Food was excellent. Atmosphere terrific. Service was a little "off"....inconsistent I guess. The place was wide open with roughly 12 people outside and maybe 10 inside. We chose to sit inside. The hostess was very pleasant and offered the two of us to sit at a larger table in the corner rather than the small tables along the wall. Service was outstanding and the menu was interesting. We ordered 5 Tapas, one or two at a time, that our waiter helped us to pair with some nice Spanish wines. The food was very good, especially the grilled Octopus, stuffed calamari, and canneloni. The chocolate creampuff sliders were amazing for dessert. Our waiter even complemented our dessert with a glass of Wellington Palo Cortado 20 Year VOS Sherry that was a nice touch. We had a great time - nice table outside (but with a heater so it stayed a nice temperature), delicious tapas (get the ceviche, its wonderful), and a great wine recommendation from the waiter. Service was gracious without being pretentious or officious; food was excellent; great selelction of Spanish wines. Standouts included sausage-stuffed squid, black (squid ink) rice with clams and calamari (as good a sBarcelona!) and duck confit that was really more tagine style.
