A word from B&G Oysters
B&G Oysters is a modern yet classic take on the oyster bar. Located in Boston's South End, B&G Oysters has a decidedly neighborhood feel, combining polished but friendly service with fantastically fresh seafood dishes and food-friendly wines. B&G Oysters has received many accolades over the years for its cuisine and wine program including "Best Seafood" in 2007 and 2008 by Boston Magazine.

This subterranean spot draws energy from its open kitchen which is surrounded by a white marble bar. In warmer weather, enjoy drinks and more on the stone patio; a favorite outdoor dining spot in the city. Please note that all reservations are for the interior of the restaurant. Our patio is available solely on a walk-in basis.

Diner Reviews
  • "I went for a romantic special occasion dinner and really was looking for a good oyster bar. Well, there were 11 different choices of oysters from PEI, Cape, Rhode Island, Washington State, etc. We got two of each and were in complete heaven. Our waiter was very attentive and had a fun attitude that heightened the experience. We drank Prosecco and Rose which the waiter noticed if we were getting low and needed refills. Since the oysters were so filling we decided to share the clam chowder and BLT lobster roll. There was not a spoonful or bite that we were not 'mmming' the entire meal. The waiter recommended the BLT over the reg. lobster roll and THANK YOU THANK YOU! B&G was well worth every cent and I cannot wait to go again!!"

  • "We truly enjoyed our meal. Food was creatively prepared so that each ingredient could be identified. The service was perfect. We would go back in a heartbeat."

  • "I was surprised at B&G oysters. It's an extraordinarily casual restaurant with excellent seafood. Portions are generous. It's perfectly located for an early dinner before going to the Huntington Theatre or the Boston Ballet. The wine list is limited. We'll go back."

  • "Had the pleasure of eating in the terrace on a lovely evening. We each had the fried clams with their yummy tartar sauce. The clams were plentiful and full bellied --- the only way to eat them! The French fries were delicious, too. There was nothing left on my plate when they took it away. The service was informal, which I appreciate, yet attentive and well-paced. It was a great place to go for a great meal after theatre."

  • "Fantastic place to dine. Great ambiance. Warm, attentive service - ask for recommendations. We did, and we ordered well. Food is fresh and delicious and everything you'd want when looking for sublime seafood. Go!"

  • "Oysters were some of the best I've ever eaten, and the dip was just awesome! The fish was also cooked perfectly. Only compaint was that the indoor restaurant was stuffy due to the open kitchen 'fishy, smokey smells' and the large crowd. I think ventillation needs to be improved in order to make the air better."

  • "Came in for oysters and champagne to celebrate our engagement. Everything was amazing from the friendliness of the host staff, the great food, and the best service one could ask for."

  • "halibut was good, but a little dry...oysters were real fresh. friend had the crab fra diavlo, good but crab was not lump meat, just "shredded", different crab style would be better...awesome pea salad, calamari could use more tentacles and was too crunchy. think Barbara lynch should dine here once or twice and see what the end product was...not great like we are used to...waiter had sweaty face and upper lip the whole time...needed to "swab" himself...was kind of gross looking...one of those 'things' that you could not get out of your mind, every time he came over I wanted to give him a napkin.and he needed to be self aware...also, the wine pours were small...just an average meal at a better than average place...hope next time is better...."

  • "Dined here on a Friday night, 845pm reservation - they took us 20 minutes early! Service was good though waitress couldn't accurately describe differences between the oysters on the oyster menu! Food was delivered promptly even after we ordered each course separately. The hot salad (little gem I think it's called) was amazing as was the black bass. Not entirely the restaurants fault but table behind us that was there before was obnoxiously loud, yelling screaming, shrieking voices. The open kitchen and exposed metal everywhere does not help to quell these sounds. I would go back though as amazing food."

  • "Overall, I enjoyed my experience. I sat in the outdoor section which was very quaint and relaxing. The service was average but no complaints. My friend and I started off with two different white wines which were perfectly aligned with each of our distinct taste preferences. The fried oyster appetizers was sooooooooo amazing- fresh with a kick of spice! We also ordered two of the crowd favorites: clam chowder and Lobster BLT....... Unfortunately, we felt that both options left much to be desired (maybe we were let down by all the hype, lol). Don't get me wrong, I would come back but maybe just for wine and appetizers only :-/"

  • "Consistently great. The best lobster roll in New England bar none. Very good, constantly changing oysters selection. Tried the homemade cavatelli fra diavolo - excellent. Nice selection of chamagnes and wines."

  • "Loved this place- so much that we went two days in row for lunch. The raw oysters were the best we have ever had. Also had a delicious lobster roll, Ipswich clams and a cod dish. Service was amazing. We highly recommend it!"

  • "We had a rewarding experience and an a wonderful meal. Our favorite part was the very informative explanation for the various oysters and raw bar options. We built a smorgasbord of apps and raw bar favorites, which was complimented with a fantastic Sancerre. Thank you for a wonderful meal and an excellent night."

  • "We have dined at B & G Oysters several times now and it never disappoints! They have a good variety of oysters all fresh. I usually ask the wait staff to pick 3 or 4 of their favorites for our table to try and we are always happy."

  • "If you are looking for amazing seafood in a comfortable but hip neighborhood spot, head to B&G. Literally the best lobster roll in Boston. Fried Oysters are phenomenonal and open kitchen is part of the experience."

  • "Another delicious meal at B&G enjoyed on the gorgeous back deck. Unfortunately, both the maitre d' and waitress were less than positive. The maitre d' was understandably annoyed that we arrived nearly 20min late, however, it was 9pm on a Tuesday night. the place was not exactly hopping. there were plenty of outdoor tables and seats at the bar, he made it seem like he couldn't seat us when we'd seen the place was less than half full on the way in and said "all we can do is the bar or outside deck." It was a great night, outside deck was our ideal, he just seemed to want to be snide about it. our waitress was just a bit odd. asked for a selection of a dozen oysters, 1/2 from each coast and she brought 6 of the same from each coast. just odd. "

  • "Prior to moving to Marblehead I lived in the South End for 30 years and love returning and dining in a spot like this. Basement dining in an old row house, dining in the garden, steeped in history. B &G has a funky, fun vibe and a lively bar scene. Waitress efficient without displaying much personality. A waiter's personality and badinage certainly enhances any dining experience, and most seasoned waitstaff are aware of this. Food was, as always, well prepared and presented."

  • "We were only one of three tables on a Sunday evening and it took them 15 minutes to bring water. The waitress (tall and blonde) acted very snooty but then couldn't answer questions about the wine or food. Usually food matters a whole lot more to me and it takes me feeling very unwelcomed to even comment on service. Do recommend the fried calamari and tile fish! The black bass was dry. "

  • "We ate here two years ago and I had been dreaming about the experience since. Sadly, the restaurant has declined. Our server was curt, could offer no more menu explanations than "this is popular" (not these oysters are briny, these creamy, etc), and seemed to be rushing us through our meal. We came back for the lobster roll, and it just lacked the flavor we remember from years prior- perhaps they forgot the butter and lemon? Either way, it wasn't the dining experience we had hoped for. "

  • "It is wonderful having a place like this in the neighborhood. It is too hard to get a last minute reservation but that's because it is so good"
    Dined on 5/27/2014
  • "We had a hankering for oysters and were well satisfied on this front (although expensive enough to dissuade us from ordering as many as we would have liked). The calamari were also delicious - light and crispy. The chowder was good, without being great, and the asparagus salad was also good - but too chilled for the flavour of the asparagus to emerge fully. The wines expensive. Server was indifferent to us. The server cast a bit of a pall on things - she was very competent, but she showed no interest in us and did not volunteer much information when we inquired about certain items on the menu. She seemed quite indifferent to the whole matter - no smiles whatsoever."

  • "...it ruins the unctuous creamy oyster experience when you bite down and unexpectedly hit shell. This happened in probably 4-5 of the 18 oysters we had. "

  • "This small basement restaurant leaves much to be desired. The high prices should produce much better quality than it does. The lobster roll was stuffed with lobster, but the roll was tiny. The French fries were good but cost an extra 5 dollars. Asking $20.00 for a hot dog seems a little over the top. The noise level is unpleasant and on a cool day leaving the door open is not a good idea"

  • "Three of us went for lunch. We had a reservation and were seated promptly. The service and food were superb as they have been the other times I have been there. While the fries are an accompanying item, they are the best I have had outside of France. Crisp and flavorful. Yum! I had the lobster BLT and I always forget how big it is. Really good with great bacon. "

  • "really disappointing food - terrible lobster roll, oyster is ok, fish was bad - neptune oyster is so much better at the same price"

  • "This restaurant is a neighborhood gem with delicious foods, most notably the oysters,of course, but also great lobster rolls and the freshest grilled fish. Service is pleasant and unobtrusive."
    Dined on 4/27/2014
  • "When I made the reservation, I asked for seats at a table rather than at the bar. I don't think I mentioned the rather high tables with stools in my request, but they made sure that it was a conventional table. Since I walk with a cane, this was a welcome service."

  • "Clearly a popular restaurant-when we left at 10:30pm they were still turning people away who did not have reservations. Oysters and lobster roll were good. First time trying skate fish so difficult to compare it with other ways to prepare/serve it. While I am use to dining in tighter corners and noise level, my partner felt that the noise level was high and the tables were too close together for his liking. "

  • "Delicious! The manager brought out an assortment of oysters for the table. They were so fresh! Lobster roll was great but it was a bit small, especially for the price. The tuna tar tar was also delightful. "

  • "We were there for Easter lunch and enjoyed the food very much. The oysters with mignonette were very tasty. The lobster roll outstanding without the usual coating of heavy mayonnaise you get at other restaurants. The mussels were good but could have been more flavorful - more herbs in the broth. The seared tuna salad was outstanding and dessert - black forest cake - had good eye appeal and was the right size portion and delicious. Overall, a good experience for a special occasion. Décor is very appropriate for a fish restaurant - beachy with the slate blue walls! "

  • "I want to give B&G a terrible review so it won't be so popular and busy but alas, I ca not lie. Everything about this place is top notch. The oysters are fresh and delicious, the salads and sides are exceptional. The service is always professional and impeccable. The open kitchen is an added bonus. "
