A word from B&G Oysters
B&G Oysters is a modern yet classic take on the oyster bar. Located in Boston's South End, B&G Oysters has a decidedly neighborhood feel, combining polished but friendly service with fantastically fresh seafood dishes and food-friendly wines. B&G Oysters has received many accolades over the years for its cuisine and wine program including "Best Seafood" in 2007 and 2008 by Boston Magazine. This subterranean spot draws energy from its open kitchen which is surrounded by a white marble bar. In warmer weather, enjoy drinks and more on the stone patio; a favorite outdoor dining spot in the city. Please note that all reservations are for the interior of the restaurant. Our patio is available solely on a walk-in basis. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Friendly service, really great food, terrific wine list, fantastic location, fun ambiance... all-round wonderful dining experience."

  • "This was our first time at B&G, and we took 2 out-of-town friends. The scene is interesting... tables a bit claustrophobic. We tried both raw and fried oysters and those were all fresh and tasty, but overpriced. Our waitress was helpful at assisting with wine choice. Table bread was stale, but olive oil dip was authentic and flavorful. All 4 entrees fell below the mark. Everything was fresh, presented well, and cooked correctly, but flavors were unoriginal and portions left us hungry. The cod and tuna entrees lacked seasoning (eggplant was my favorite part). The bass and fra diavolo crab were mediocre. We expected greatness and anticipated our reservation here for several weeks, but we should've just gone to Island Creek or Legals instead."

  • "The best clam chowder! Great fresh food with a fun ambience. I highly recommend!"

  • "This is a very energetic, friendly restaurant. All hands on deck creates very good service. Couple items missed just a bit....the clam chowder was unusually watery rather than the preferred thicker, the pasta with crab was tasty, however not certain why they chose to put a small pile of newly puréed crab on top as opposed to folding in lump crab meat. Texture was a bit odd and the crab flavor got lost in the Fra Diavolo sauce. Raw oysters were fresh and plump, but did not have that briny salt taste to them, but still very good. Still recommend going as a very enjoyable neighborhood spot."

  • "with complex flavors and some serious spice!! Next time, would have bowls (instead of cups) of chowder as the main course with a side of something. Service was competent but unremarkable."

  • "It is my favorite spot proven time and time again."

  • "Went to B & G for the "Dine out Boston" the menu was superb and the oyster special was FANTASTIC. Service was great as usual and we really enjoyed ourselves."

  • "what once was one of the best places to eat in the city has slowly worsened, month by month. Service is terrible with snooty and unfriendly waitstaff to the food being bland and tasteless and well below what they were a year ago. Not sure why the change, but the institution that once was is no longer"

  • "The oysters are great! The wine list is outstanding. All around a win win!"

  • "What a terrific experience! My friend and I went for restaurant week. The service was impeccable. Everyone was extremely welcoming and attentive without overdoing it. It was a Wednesday night and the place was packed. The crab cake was memorable. The main course was great although portions could be larger. The highlight was the dessert. I almost licked my plate. The atmosphere is unpretentious which balances nicely with the presentation of the dishes, creating an overall comforting experience."

  • "Unfortunately although there were many good things (attentive service, great ambiance, eager-to-please dishes), several not-so-good things weighed this review down. Oyster deal was completely lackluster. The restaurant puts up a "Chef's Choice" oyster deal (6 for $14) which are basically the lowest cost oysters they purchase wholesale. Each piece still adds up to over $2 when in reality, they order them for under 80 cents. Not worth it! Most items on the menu are overpriced for what they are. Each dish adds up to "just good enough" to pass, but nothing extraordinary. I would advise people to send their money elsewhere."

  • "Many people recommended B&G, but the fare does not compare to Neptune Oyster in the North End or to Island Creek in the Fenway. There is zero ambience (tables are like diner tables from the 50s and it is a very tight squeeze) and the wine list is one of the most unbalanced I have seen. Oysters were good and fresh but nothing amazing; quality of entrees not commensurate with price. Bottom line: you can find better in Boston."

  • "Over the past year the food here has gone way down hill. The service is adequate, to not just caring at best. For the prices you should be getting much fresher and innovative food."

  • "I came up from Philly to visit a friend and wanted to try B&G oysters after seeing their lobster roll featured on the show "best food ever". The roll didn't quite live up to my expectations, but overall everything was good, fast, and the waitstaff were friendly."

  • "The oysters were maybe the best I've ever had. The lobster roll and butter poached lobster were not worth the high price. The fried oysters were surprisingly good."

  • "We hadn't been to the restaurant before, and weren't familiar with all the different types of oysters, so our waitress did a great job of recommending a selection of oysters that would allow us to experience the great differences among the various types. It was interesting, fun, and delicious. Also, the wine labeled exclusively for B&G was wonderful. Each of our dishes was delicious, and the wait staff was friendly, helpful, and attentive. A great choice for dinner."

  • "One of the best spots for oysters in Boston! A must when in the area"

  • "Best Oysters in Boston, but stay with East Coast varieties. Reserve EARLY; it is always full, for good reason."

  • "I made an online reservation for dinner but later received a phone call, asking me to call the restaurant to confirm. Why book online at all if I need to call anyway? Our reservation ended up being for two seats at the bar in this tiny establishment. So, after both reserving online and calling, we still did not warrant a table but were seated like anyone else who showed up that evening, elbow to elbow at the tiny bar. The Portuguese seafood stew we ordered tasted quite bitter due to the charred octopus, so much so we asked if there was a mistake. The chef assured us the recipe was authentic, but I wish such a dish would come with a note of it's unique flavor. Overall a nice place, but a bit pricey in my opinion."

  • "Wonderful setting in the south end of Boston. Very item on the menu prepared with TLC. If you are looking for the best oyster selection in the city B&G Oysters is the place to be."

  • "I have been here so many times, and every time is the same: excellent. The food never gets less delicious and the service is always spot on."

  • "Great oysters! We were there in mid-February and my wife asked for recommendations for creamy oysters. Unfortunately our server said they did not have any that day but made some recommendations for briny oysters tha were pretty good as well. The lobster bisque was sublime! Great flavor and texture. Possibly one of the best we have ever tasted. My appetizer choice of seared scallops and foie gras was competently executed but lacked that "wow" factor. Entrees (my wife had the butter poached lobster tail, I had the lobster BLT) were similarly decent but not memorable. Would visit again for the lobster bisque and the raw bar."

  • "If you can afford it, B&G is definitely a place to go. I'd been hearing about their lobster BLT for years, and it lived up to all my expectations. I's also very filling, so you really shouldn't order much else. But the variety of fresh oysters is amazing and the oysters have a sparkle you don't often find in Boston. Some of them are nearly $4.00 a pop.But they are worth it! $14 is high for a bowl of clam chowder--but what a bowl! For a special occasion, this charming little hole in the wall is definitely a major destination."

  • "I have been here many times before and have always liked it. I was disappointed this time. They had the option to do a prixe fixe menu. I tried it and it wasn't really that great. . The food was ok, I would have rather just ordered off the regular menu and been happier and probably paid less. The infused rice with either clams or mussels wasn't really inspiring. The squid wasn't bad, but all together everything was more on the bland side. The service, however, was really great. I'll go back, but hoping that I won't be disappointed."

  • "A lovely, cozy spot with well-trained, well-informed staff. Our server was attentive without being obtrusive, and very helpful, making good suggestions when asked for help with which oysters to try and what wine to pair with them. We started with a dozen oysters, mixing four varieties. The oysters were presented beautifully, were well-shucked and super fresh. After enjoying those, we had a round of fried oysters, which were perfectly cooked and served with just a hint of tartar sauce under each. Delicious! After a half-dozen raw cherry stones, we moved on to entrees, which were all wonderful, although the exquisite butter-poached lobster tail stood out. Not our first time here and I certainly hope it will not be our last!"

  • "I loved the oysters menu and the possibility to sample different ones from east to west. It was interesting to compare and pair with wine. The staff is friendly and seems genuine in wanting to please. Our meal was nice and ambiance was conducive to a pleasant dinner - not too much noise and just enough action. All in all a nice restaurant for oyster lovers."

  • "Overall great spot. Service was attentive and friendly, but not overbearing or intrusive. They also helped time having your car returned to you if valeted. All was well done. For a small spot it did not feel tight and it was an enjoyable dining experience. If you have food issues that are acutely attentive and understanding- not something many places can claim to be."

  • "Tried this place on a whim; great choice definitely a repeat."

  • "We had researched best lobster rolls on-line and came up with about 5. We knew that this was a Barbara Lynch resto, she is a known top chef. Oddly, on a Friday lunch, B & G was empty. The chowder was amazing, rich with lard and flavours. The cherrystone clams were good, but we got one large and three medium size. And our mission was the lobster roll, which was very acceptable, with five ounces of meat and very little mayonnaise (good), but not a taste treat and rather unremarkable. It was high at $23, which is $4 or $5 more than in the harbour area. The real disappointment was that I was dying for the pumpkin crab bisque and the waiter refused to give me a sample spoonful to try.. I could not understand it."

  • "My wife and I really like going to B&G, but we were disappointed this time. The oysters were great as always, but our fish was uncharacteristically dry, and my appetizer was not very well seasoned. We will certainly be back, as we hope that this is just a one-time outlier. Also, some of the seating is really uncomfortable and cramped, although I know that it's part of the charm."

  • "Went to B&G on 1/12/2014 - it was to celebrate our daughter's 30th birthday and she had been wanting to try B&G for some time. While I am not an oyster lover my husband and daughter are and they did enjoy trying several different varieties and said they were excellent. I had the clam chowder - not thick and heavy but the best chowder I have probably ever eaten. My husband had the lobster roll (he is very fussy about his lobster rolls) and said it was very good. My daughter had the lobster BLT and I had fish and chips. We shared a chocolate tablet for dessert. Not only was the food excellent the service could not have been better. I highly recommend B&G Oysster."

  • "I had two friends visiting from out of town, staying in the North End and complaining of too much Italian Food (I didn't know there was such a thing). B&G always satisfies and I was having a craving for Duxbury oysters, which they usually have. What a delightful dining experience. Everything was perfect and my friends were delighted."

  • "If you want to overpay and get an awful lunch, then this is the place for you. The clam chowder was notably salty, the ubiquitous lardons fatty and not crisp; the soup watery. . Then came the overpriced lobster BLT. Please...hold the abundance of mayo, pitiful shreds of lobster, presented on a hard ciabatta roll. Unless you have a double jointed jaw easily removable, you can't get you mouth around it. Plus it was so messy, it should be consumed over a sink. The wait staff, annoying. It seemed several, in addition to our waiter were constantly at the ready to whisk the plates away, whether we were finished or not. Diner beware: when the celebrity chef/owner is not in attendance, quality suffers. I will never make this mistake again."
