We had a hard time deciding what to get, there were so many things that sounded good. The shrimp gazpacho was delicious. The portions were rich and generous, which we loved. The service was fantastic. The noise level did get a little loud for a Thursday night but we didn't mind. We decided to use it for a special occasion - to celebrate our 49th anniversary. We took pictures of each course - 3 - and sent them to our children. The energy and ambiance was just right. My friend and I got there early for dinner and couldn't have asked for a more enjoyable dining experience. I had a chicken dish, pollo genovese and my friend had grilled salmon. Our sides were broccoli and a stuff potato. The service was excellent also. Had a great night and would dine there again. My only criticism, and it is significant, is the noise level is quite intolerable whenever it is fully booked. The tables are too close together and groups tend to raise the level to the point that diners for two are forced to shout over each other. We dine out 1-3 times a week in Richmond. In terms of atmosphere, this the high end restaurant all other high end restaurants in Richmond aspire to, or should. (The only competition: Lemaire at the Jefferson and Acacia.)
We've been going to Azzurro fairly regularly for 8 years; it never fails. My most recent experience was disappointing. Our server was condescending and imperious and appeared really put out to have to serve us. Prices are such that they generally eliminate the younger crowd of college age kids or twenty-somethings.
