A word from Azuma - Kirby
The original Azuma Sushi & Robata Bar in Rice Village offers the most traditional approach to Japanese cuisine and sushi of all the five restaurants in The Azuma Group. Classical application of fresh, flavorful ingredients makes this location a mainstay for the Village and West University crowd.

With Executive Chef Masa Wakatsuki, the restaurant is serving some of the best traditional Japanese food in the city. Masa-San has poured his many years of experience and knowledge into the menu and diners who desire the very tradition and essence of old world Japan will appreciate and cherish the culinary delights he creates. Head sushi chef Takahisa Onisha is known for an infectious spirit and playful interaction with guests as he dishes up superior nigiri, sashimi and maki rolls.

Azuma Kirby has a private dining area upstairs as well as a generously sized private dining room for very special occasions or small private parties.

On Sat my boyfriend and I went to Azuma for lunch. I got very disappointed to find out they did not serve their lunch menu on Sat. Their website does not say the lunch menu is limited only to Monday to Friday. We got there at 12:00 and were the first customer. The place did not get busy later. However, the service was extremely slow! It took 15 min just to get our first drinks. I finally got my dish at 12:40 and was told our appetizer was not ready. The appetizer came at 12:45 and we still had to wait for my boyfriend's dish. At 12:55 my boyfriend lost his patience and canceled his dish. Whole time, the waiter did not come around to follow up with us for the late dishes. My beef dish was full of onions--an awful value for $17.

  • Good not Great

Azuma is alright, service left something to be desired. I had a reservation, arrived on time but still had to wait more than 10 minutes. There is absolutely no comfortable place to wait for a table, no matter where you stand, you will be in the way of a waiter or getting hit by the door. The prices aren't bad, it was $80 for my date and I to have dinner, a glass of wine, and dessert, including ~20% gratuity, although I'm not sure our waiter earned it. He brought out my date's dinner several minutes before mine, which made for a slight awkward moment, no big deal, but then did the same thing at dessert! Overall it is an acceptable casual restaurant, but there are so many better places around that it is unlikely that I will go back.

  • I was pleasantly surprised

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of a white wine the waiter recommended. I think it was a pinot grigio, something with vine in the name. The marketing rep used to work for your restaurant. I'd come back just for that wine, which was around $50. My friends and I had a lovely evening!

My first trip to Azuma was during restaurant weeks. They did not have a restaurant weeks menu and didn't mention it, so we just went with the standard menu. The nigiri was on par with the best we've had in Houston, but didn't rival decent sushi bars on the coasts. The rice wasn't particularly well packed on the nigiri or the rolls, but everything tasted fresh and good. One of the big ups to most Houston sushi houses is the variety of rolls, Azuma is a bit more traditional. Definitely a place I would go again, focusing more on nigiri, for rolls I think Oishii is king.

Unless you are a sushi fan, I recommend you read up on Robata so you know what to expect from Azuma's specialties. It's not your typical Japanese fair, but it's good and interesting. Service was great, although we were not all served our food at the same time and that was weird. We had fun, though, and enjoyed ourselves.

  • Seated immediately upon arrive

Seated immediately upon arrive (15 minutes early), but it took the waitress 5 minutes to greet us and another 15 minutes to get back to take our drink order. The restaurant was packed with kids (very noisy), and all seemed to order something that smoked horribly filling the restaurant which wasn't pleasant. The salads are the highlight of the menu, they were absolutely GREAT. The seared tuna with black pepper crust salad was outstanding!! The appetizers were fantastic (tempura was the best). The sushi (main course) was "OK" and fell way short of the salads and entrees. Sushi was sliced very thin giving you a minimal serving, but it was fresh and flavorful. The red bean ice cream with tempura bananas was outstanding. Service only weakness.
