Good none the less...food was decent, service was adequate if uninspired. Entree took too long, no bread served with mussels appetizer, mediocre Cesar Salad, then basket of bread brought out when entrees delayed by about 15 minutes past reasonable wait time...good wine selection. Kind of pricey for not hitting on all cylinders. Maybe just an off night, but they need a little better hosting and more pizazz on the service front with attention to detail for those extra bucks they charge, or just lower the prices and thus expectations. Again, not a bad experience but overall not up to snuff for price level.

The two best parts of this restaurant are the art on the walls and the wine list. The wine list covers the bases yet concentrates on Spanish, Italian and Rhone varietals appropriate to the cuisine. They also have a few discoveries- how many of you have had a South African sparkling wine? Wine prices are quite reasonable. Many options are available by the glass and half bottle, too. I liked the lemony Portuguese Chicken Soup best. Chef showed creative flair with the non-traditional Chili Relleno, although the result on the plate didn't match the creativity in the kitchen. Our server was clearly inexperienced, but gave it the "ole college try."

  • A pleasant, but not perfect, dinner
    OpenTable Diner Since 2012
    Dined on 6/1/2013
We visited Azu recently during our first trip to Ojai. We were attracted to the Tapas-style menu, since small plates allow the diner variety and a leisurely tempo. After having been to several Tapas restaurants (and to Barcelona home of the Tapas) we were a bit disappointed. The dishes were tasty, but lacking, and the waitress kept trying to rush us. The bread basket was filled with tiny "crouton" sized cut cubes of bread, which we had never seen before, causing us to ask for a refill three times, just to have enough bread to sop up some of the sauce from our Gambas. They have a nice menu, but improvements could definitely be made.

  • Loud girl ruins atmosphere
    OpenTable Diner Since 2012
    Dined on 5/27/2013
We were at Azu for a late night wine and tapas experience. We were delighted to find that wines were 30% off. The mussels were delicious, Honey baked Brie a must, Chile Relleno was out of this world, and finally the bacon wrapped chorizo stuffed dates were ok (the bacon and chorizo were a little redundant-I would stuff the dates with goat cheese or something that would give one more layer of flavor). Our wine was very good. To top it off we ended with a very large scoop of coconut gelato-WOW! The atmosphere was ruined by a very loud girl in the bar who no one tried to quiet and as we were finishing our wine the bartender changed the music to heavy metal, head banging music! Horrible experience!

  • Great Friday meal on Good Friday
    OpenTable Diner Since 2013
    Dined on 3/29/2013
Truly a find in Ojai. As it was Good Friday I was limited to seafood this visit, but Azu served up limitless choices for us. Perfectly lightly battered Al Dente Calamari coupled with a tangy marinara and bitingly, decadent garlic tartar. The huge Gambas ( swimming in this heated colorful broth) of garlic, shallots onion and definitive buttery warm, fresh, firm and divine. We ordered the app again at the end of our discovery in fact. Azu's bread bites are highly addictive. They sop up the broth and sauces too well. The seared large scallops plated with a purée of blood orange spring onions, was interesting paired with a nice chilled Sauv Blanc. I took away raspberry notes w just 3 scallops ok but lacked firmness But gelato & art kicked all!

We ate at Azu 2 out of 3 nights in Ojai. Both times the food was fresh and flavorful, light enough but satisfying. The atmosphere is lively but not at all loud. Our server was knowledgable and friendly (but not too). The look of Azu is fairly open and contemporary w/ interesting painting/prints on the walls. Highly recommended.

My friends and I enjoyed Azu very much. We came up from LA to celebrate St.Patricks Day to get out of town and be in lovely Ojai. I do believe I expected the bar to be open at 5pm so made reservations for 5:30, for a drink at the bar but you werent open so my friends went down the street to 33 for a celebratory drink.

I actually ate here two nights in a row. The first night I sat at the bar and had the herb roasted chicken. The portion was good sized, but as I am on a protein diet I did not eat the sides. The chicken was delicious. The outer was crisp and well seasoned, and the white meat was tender, juicy and melt in your mouth. The next night I was joined by a friend and we returned, with table reservations, and I had the salmon. The portion was slightly smaller, but also delicious. Slightly crispy on the outside, but tender and moist on the inside. It was excellent. The wine selection was modest, not overwhelming, but excellent choices. If I lived in Ojai, this would be my go-to dining destination.

The food for both of us was excellent, well presented and imaginative. The service was friendly and pleasant but with over-long gaps between appearances by the staff. Overall, the experience was very positive and we will go there again when in the area and will recommend it to friends.

We went with friends who eat vegan so sometimes it can be difficult. The food was excellent with many vegan choices plus choices for my husband and myself also. Only one discordant note - when we split the check there was a $2.00 charge to split the bill. We have not encountered this before and wondered if this is becoming commonplace.

There were no complaints from the group - our table was ready and our food came out promptly. Very good sauces that accompanied the various entries and salads - and plenty of variety for tapas and entrees. Although a good wine selction, limited availabilty when we actually wanted to order.
