The way the "waitress-in-chief" received us was just unacceptable. The way she told with arrogance to our children and our friends' child to "stop talking loud, go back to the table, be seated and stay calm" -just because they were laughing and playing on the terrace, in other terms there were just acting like...children - was just unacceptable.". A real G.I. Joe landed in a restaurant which was supposed to be a pleasant and relaxing place. A waitress-in-chief who frightened our guests and our children. What really counts is how you "fill" a nice space. Do your guests a favor, put some smiling, nice and friendly persons at Axe. And if your place can't stand children, you should let your guests know before they make a reservation. Best.

We were looking forward to trying Axe, but it did not live up to expectations. The seating is extremely uncomfortable. You should not have to sit on a backless bench in a nice restaurant. The server was rude, and very annoyed that we asked questions about the ingredients in some of the menu items. Despite the attitude, the food was good -- the crab appetizer was the table favorite -- and I was happy to see a sparkling red on the drink list.

We found the food lacked depth. Fish was overlooked with not much flavor. There was considerable attention to sustainability, organic, etc., etc., which is good. However, we found the food fell short given all the generally good reviews and Marketing. Maybe fish is not their thing or was an off dish that eve

I went to Axe on Saturday night with friends and we were "highly" disappointed. The food was tasty but the portions waaaaaay too small, I mean less then half the normal size while the price was for a normal size portion. And when we ordered the wine, the first 4 were not available. But service was good, unfortunately this is not enough to make us go back or recommend it to other people. It was our first disappointment on Abbot Kinney, usually restaurants in that area are excellent.

I really wanted to like Axe. It just didn't live up to the hype, particullarly at the exhorbitantly high price. Squid salad was salty. Highly recommended by the server, the mussels in coconut curry were mediocre. I've had better at my neighborhood thai restaurant. The sake steak was minuscule with no sides. The potato cake side we ordered with it was delicious but at $18 I wouldn't order again. The papperdalle pasta was simple and delicious. Probably the best thing we ordered. The service was lukewarm. Everything arrived in a timely fashion but there was a laissez-faire, " I'm awesome because I work at an Abbott Kinney restaurant" type attitude. Overall, I eat out a lot, I've worked in the industry and I was completely underwhelmed by Axe.

We liked the locavore, artisanal approach, no plastics, attention to detail approach. The food was made with care and quality ingredients, but ultimately the recipes felt not too interesting. I don't mind paying more for quality, but I will only come back to a place if the recipes feel like something I could not just as easily make at home. Sadly, I was underwhelmed.

With an out of town friend, a group of 3 tried this restaurant for the first time. Made a reservation via OpenTable, however when we got there we were told they only have a spot for us at the "communal table". Fine, went with the flow, but there was nothing to tell me that at the time of the reservation, so expectations were not met. We made the effort to go there and obviously when we make a reservation we have no plan B.We were really looking for something more intimate to have a conversation between the 3 of us while having a nice meal. Wine by the glass was super expensive with no alt, more reasonable choices. The food was decent, nothing extraordinarily out of this world, and the portions were really small for a really big price.

I was visiting friends in Venice for the night and decided to give Axe a try. I'm a massive fan of Gjelina down the street but Axe's menu sounded great and came recommended by a trusted friend. We had a reservation for 3 people, but were still asked to wait about 15-20 minutes before being seated. Our server was very attentive and friendly, and made a point of letting us know that the "entree" portions are small. This turned out to be the understatement of the year. My friend's fish dish arrived and consisted of 3 very thinly sliced (carpaccio thin) pieces of fish, each no more than a single bite. The rest of the dishes were slightly more sizable & tasty but not memorable. Overall we had a decent experience but won't be back.

Large table have backless benches only; no chairs. Menu makes no sense; very disorganized. Many entree portions are barely appetizer size; my sashimi, though tasty was the size of an amuse bouche! It was insulting. I did order another entree but it came after everyone had eaten. They do warn you that some of the portions are 4.5oz, but don't suggest ordering two items or something else. We didn't stay for dessert! Noise level grew to a crescendo that had my dad need to go outside. Summer dinner should by the beach should feel breezy and cool or at least comfortable. No open windows, a ceiling fan that they refused to turn on only in one room and NO air conditioning!! We'll never go back.

It is OK, not worth money. Menu so complicated even waitress could not explain it clearly. Dishes tended toward the bland and sometimes skimpy. Eg, Moroccan lamb dish had one prune, insufficient spices, and accompanying harissa was more like ketchup than the sharp condiment it should be. Other dishes hit and miss.

Made a reservation for Friday to celebrate a promotion at work. First ones in the door when it opened. We were immediately seated at a table by the hallway/entry to the kitchen. When my wife asked if we could possibly sit at a table against the wall in order to give her some back support, we were told her request could not be accommodated as there was another table for two coming in two hours. Mind you, the entire restaurant is empty at this point. Rather than offer an alternative, manager shrugged and went back to her business. So we left and had a great meal down the block at Willie Jane. After dinner, walking to get our bikes, we passed Axe and saw the table by the wall we'd requested, empty and untouched.

The garden is lovely and quiet. The restaurant gets abysmally noisy when it's crowded and is unpleasant, although the space is visually calming. The menu offers an interesting variety of dishes large and small, and good wines at reasonable prices, but my friend and I were disappointed by the taste of each of the dishes we ordered. The chef tends to make hot dishes very HOT, acidic dishes very acidic, etc. The flavors could be a bit more nuanced.

I'm new to LA and was excited to try LA restos. We arrived at 5:50 for our 6pm reservation and thought we'd have a drink. But the manager was absolutely insistent that the restaurant was not yet open for business and we could not come in and wait. She literally closed the door on us and another party who also arrived early. She actually did not open the doors until 6:08 and so we we ended up standing outside on the sidewalk for 20 minutes. The food was ok, but not worth the drive to Venice. I don't remember any of the dishes..the menu was unremarkable. The memory of standing outside and being treated with brusk arrogance is forever imprinted in my mind.

We had a male waiter, who did everything but wait on us. He spent most of the time chatting with someone in the other room. We were in his eyeline and he still ignored us. We weren't given clean plates when our entrees arrived and had to ask for something other than our saucy salad plates to eat off of. Waited and waited to order dessert, then waited and waited for it to arrive... two bites in he put the bill on the table. Not good, Axe. Not good.

Axe takes great care in procuring the freshest ingredients from local purveyors. The food is meticulously prepared, the staff is beaming with positive energy and friendly in that perfect subtle but genuine way. The space itself could not be more spot on - very minimal, very warm, just perfect. The outdoor dining area is an absolute hidden gem as well. With small fireplaces scattered about, it's fun to sneak to the back after a meal to enjoy a cup of coffee or night cap!

We made the mistake of having a 6PM reservation. We arrived early and thought we would have a glass of wine. To our displeasure, we had to stand outside until 6:10 before we were let into the restaurant. They saw us and others standing in the freezing windy weather and did nothing. People nearby said this happens all the time and they just leave people outside. Wouldn't they rather make at least $30 on 2 glasses of wine? Guess Not. Asked to close the window next to our table because of the cold weather and now the chill we had, and they gave us a hard time. NO one wanted the windows open. Waitress not familiar with food items, food came out way too fast and the whole evening we felt RUSHED. The scallops with polenta crust were over cooked.

We have been to Axe several times before - we love the food - the service is good, and the community table outdoors is nice touch when bringing guests. At this recent visit, we enjoyed our meals, and could hear each other talk. Our choices of meals were all well prepared and interesting, though the Lamb dish was pretty sparse in terms of meat. For the price - this dish could have been more generous. Otherwise, we loved the evening with our friends, the wine was lovely, the fish, polenta with mushrooms was flavorful and had a wonderful texture, the "bowl" was enjoyed by one of our friends, the flat bread and meal sides were all nicely balanced. Thanks Axe for a nice evening.

Love axe and go all the time but had issues with hostess the other night. She told me she could not seat me untily party arrived which is a fine policy except for the two exceptions she seated as single parties neare. If you have a policy you need to keep it at all levels with all customers. When she finally sat us she said I need the table in an hour. I love axe but I know this hostess will not last if she keeps this up.
