  • "Great food! Ethical! Healthy and delicious. I crave this place :)"

  • "I've been eating here since it opened. There is always something new that is great (just had the braised lamb), and there are always some longtime staples, like the chocolate brownie pudding, rice bowls, and the pancake."

  • "Made a reservation for Friday to celebrate a promotion at work. First ones in the door when it opened. We were immediately seated at a table by the hallway/entry to the kitchen. When my wife asked if we could possibly sit at a table against the wall in order to give her some back support, we were told her request could not be accommodated as there was another table for two coming in two hours. Mind you, the entire restaurant is empty at this point. Rather than offer an alternative, manager shrugged and went back to her business. So we left and had a great meal down the block at Willie Jane. After dinner, walking to get our bikes, we passed Axe and saw the table by the wall we'd requested, empty and untouched. "

  • "Fresh food with special attention to the origin and preparation. Some is the best food in Venice. "

  • "Although the decor was a little blasé the food was far from it. The Halibut special was cooked to perfection, melting in my mouth. My wife's short ribs was equally as good. The portions are small but the price was reasonable. All in all we had a great dinner."

  • "The garden is lovely and quiet. The restaurant gets abysmally noisy when it's crowded and is unpleasant, although the space is visually calming. The menu offers an interesting variety of dishes large and small, and good wines at reasonable prices, but my friend and I were disappointed by the taste of each of the dishes we ordered. The chef tends to make hot dishes very HOT, acidic dishes very acidic, etc. The flavors could be a bit more nuanced. "

  • "Very modern, warm vibe. Loved it. The vegetables, in particular, are spectacular!"

  • "I'm new to LA and was excited to try LA restos. We arrived at 5:50 for our 6pm reservation and thought we'd have a drink. But the manager was absolutely insistent that the restaurant was not yet open for business and we could not come in and wait. She literally closed the door on us and another party who also arrived early. She actually did not open the doors until 6:08 and so we we ended up standing outside on the sidewalk for 20 minutes. The food was ok, but not worth the drive to Venice. I don't remember any of the dishes..the menu was unremarkable. The memory of standing outside and being treated with brusk arrogance is forever imprinted in my mind."

  • "Always good food at Axe although the halibut was not my fav this time round and we continually had to request water for the table. Service good overall but inconsistent. "

  • "If you are looking for over the top style food, this spot isn't for you. Their approach is for purist foodies who appreciate clean, nuanced food. Highly recommend. "

  • "Great atmosphere and the food is delicious. Sitting outside is very romantic, and a perfect date spot."

  • "We had a male waiter, who did everything but wait on us. He spent most of the time chatting with someone in the other room. We were in his eyeline and he still ignored us. We weren't given clean plates when our entrees arrived and had to ask for something other than our saucy salad plates to eat off of. Waited and waited to order dessert, then waited and waited for it to arrive... two bites in he put the bill on the table. Not good, Axe. Not good. "

  • "I really enjoy the food at Axe, but a few things to note: it is ridiculously expensive, the dishes are more like tapas (at entree prices) & the dining room is crazy loud. That said, they were nice enough to put us in a corner, as requested, since one member of our party was hard of hearing - that happened to be next to the door on a cold & blustery night - & the door does not automatically close. Because it is patronized by the glitterati, they bring their unruly children (truly inappropriate) to run amok and no one says anything (at easily $75 a head, that's not the dining experience I want to have). The food is inventive and delicious, but honestly, it's like a snack - and I don't eat giant portions. Wine is way overpriced."

  • "Loved the ambiance and flexible ordering structure. The cauliflower gratin n brocoli was amazing. I wish there were mire vegetariAn meal choices but i still rnjiyed the hodge podge of sides i ordred, they were all delish. Def will ce bak! "

  • "Axe takes great care in procuring the freshest ingredients from local purveyors. The food is meticulously prepared, the staff is beaming with positive energy and friendly in that perfect subtle but genuine way. The space itself could not be more spot on - very minimal, very warm, just perfect. The outdoor dining area is an absolute hidden gem as well. With small fireplaces scattered about, it's fun to sneak to the back after a meal to enjoy a cup of coffee or night cap!"

  • "this is the place to go for clean well prepared organic cuisine !"

  • "So horrible it was laughable. Food was terrible, service was awful and the entire experience was undeniably the worst dining out experience ever! NOT RECCOMENDED!"
    Dined on 4/9/2014
  • "We made the mistake of having a 6PM reservation. We arrived early and thought we would have a glass of wine. To our displeasure, we had to stand outside until 6:10 before we were let into the restaurant. They saw us and others standing in the freezing windy weather and did nothing. People nearby said this happens all the time and they just leave people outside. Wouldn't they rather make at least $30 on 2 glasses of wine? Guess Not. Asked to close the window next to our table because of the cold weather and now the chill we had, and they gave us a hard time. NO one wanted the windows open. Waitress not familiar with food items, food came out way too fast and the whole evening we felt RUSHED. The scallops with polenta crust were over cooked."

  • "We have been to Axe several times before - we love the food - the service is good, and the community table outdoors is nice touch when bringing guests. At this recent visit, we enjoyed our meals, and could hear each other talk. Our choices of meals were all well prepared and interesting, though the Lamb dish was pretty sparse in terms of meat. For the price - this dish could have been more generous. Otherwise, we loved the evening with our friends, the wine was lovely, the fish, polenta with mushrooms was flavorful and had a wonderful texture, the "bowl" was enjoyed by one of our friends, the flat bread and meal sides were all nicely balanced. Thanks Axe for a nice evening."

  • "Love axe and go all the time but had issues with hostess the other night. She told me she could not seat me untily party arrived which is a fine policy except for the two exceptions she seated as single parties neare. If you have a policy you need to keep it at all levels with all customers. When she finally sat us she said I need the table in an hour. I love axe but I know this hostess will not last if she keeps this up."

  • "Just don't get it. Mobbed and noisy for small portions of overpriced mediocre food and slipshod service,. Had been therew for brunch a few times and enjoyed it, but dinner between one and two stars. Skip it!"

  • "service was friendly and the waiter explained some of the mysteries of the menu. However, the food is only average and the portions are small. The menu will appeal especially to vegetarians."

  • "High quality ingredients, rather bland food. Not many options for vegetarians. Great service."

  • "Axe is a wonderful little restaurant at the end of Abbot Kinney Blvd. serving organic, California-Meditteranean inspired dishes. Everything was delicious and prepared with style. The restaurant s cozy and comfortable. I will definitely go back."

  • "New York like bistro. Quaint dining experience with cool picnic table seating that still maintains the intimacy for a date. Great food a reasonable price. We were greeted with champagne as we say down and never once neglected while we were enjoying our meal. Axe is a perfect dinner date. Look for celebrities too, we saw some heavy hitters here."

  • "I come to AXE almost every week. It is the best restaurant on the west side. Romantic, stylish, amazing food, incredible back patio and really nice and knowledgeable staff."
    Dined on 2/8/2014
  • "3 stars for the food 1 star for the RUDE manager who gives this place a bad name among west side restaurants. Experience was nice however, restaurant managers was not. Manager very regime and forgets that customers become repeat customers for more than the food & ambiance. She is not accommodating, rather bossy, pushy and militant. SHE will tell you where you can sit based on her booking schedule, not by your preference even though you have a reservation. With so many other great food options within walking distance it's hard to believe she would be so abrasive. Quite honestly, she personifies the typical stereotype of the restaurant hostesses/managers we all laugh at! May or may not ever consider going back."

  • "This was my first visit to Axe. Exceptional food preparation and presentation. Tapas style, smaller sized portions allow you to sample many different tastes, none of which disappoint. Indoor seating can be very noisy. Outdoor seating is wonderful but can be chilly. Love this place and will be back with friends"

  • "I took out a group of Finnish gastronomes to eat at AXE and it met our expectations. A beautiful space that offers a deep and well-curated wine list. The food was good but nothing terribly fancy, rather it was simple, homey and upscale without being pretentious. I would highly recommend it for a romantic experience--for however cramped the space was, it felt really intimate and private. It was a nice evening."
    Dined on 1/2/2014
  • "Outstanding food. Very good, knowledgeable service staff. Some problems in the kitchen caused very long delays but the service staff noticed before we had to say anything, and compensated us with both drinks and dessert."
    Dined on 12/14/2013
  • "Food was very tasted and very healthy. Not heavy with sauce and oil. Might be too plain for some people. Ambience is very spartan, but is cool. The back patio would be lovely for dining in the warmer months."
    Dined on 12/11/2013
  • "service was unsophisticated. blaming breaking the cork in the bottle on the fact that waitress was interrupted by my question about the menu. food is scant and overpriced. misleading menu. ordered cod with vegetables. turned out to be a small bowl of watery soup. don't waste your money."
    Dined on 11/22/2013
  • "The food was pretty good but ruined by an arrogant and aloof waiter in the garden. A pity because the setting is quite nice. We won't be back."
    Dined on 11/17/2013
  • "Everything is casually special- which is to say everything seems to be done with care, but it is not pretentious. Thoroughly enjoyable."

  • "as the food. the food rocks, which is why i picked this place for my husband's birthday gathering. healthy, tasty, inspired food. that's not the problem. but here it is...i booked this a week in advance and was very clear i had 10 people in my party. all adults. the table they sat us at was just too small and when i mentioned it to the wait staff, they seemed uninterested in doing anything about it. that was a drag and could have been corrected. not only that, but there is a great outdoor area which i asked about on the phone and they didn't suggest it, but it would have been more festive and comfortable. so, my suggestion - this place is great for two or four. for a bigger group, insist on outside or a bigger table."
