Eg, Moroccan lamb dish had one prune, insufficient spices, and accompanying harissa was more like ketchup than the sharp condiment it should be. Other dishes hit and miss."

  • "Made a reservation for Friday to celebrate a promotion at work. First ones in the door when it opened. We were immediately seated at a table by the hallway/entry to the kitchen. When my wife asked if we could possibly sit at a table against the wall in order to give her some back support, we were told her request could not be accommodated as there was another table for two coming in two hours. Mind you, the entire restaurant is empty at this point. Rather than offer an alternative, manager shrugged and went back to her business. So we left and had a great meal down the block at Willie Jane. After dinner, walking to get our bikes, we passed Axe and saw the table by the wall we'd requested, empty and untouched. "

  • "The garden is lovely and quiet. The restaurant gets abysmally noisy when it's crowded and is unpleasant, although the space is visually calming. The menu offers an interesting variety of dishes large and small, and good wines at reasonable prices, but my friend and I were disappointed by the taste of each of the dishes we ordered. The chef tends to make hot dishes very HOT, acidic dishes very acidic, etc. The flavors could be a bit more nuanced. "

  • "I'm new to LA and was excited to try LA restos. We arrived at 5:50 for our 6pm reservation and thought we'd have a drink. But the manager was absolutely insistent that the restaurant was not yet open for business and we could not come in and wait. She literally closed the door on us and another party who also arrived early. She actually did not open the doors until 6:08 and so we we ended up standing outside on the sidewalk for 20 minutes. The food was ok, but not worth the drive to Venice. I don't remember any of the dishes..the menu was unremarkable. The memory of standing outside and being treated with brusk arrogance is forever imprinted in my mind."

  • "We had a male waiter, who did everything but wait on us. He spent most of the time chatting with someone in the other room. We were in his eyeline and he still ignored us. We weren't given clean plates when our entrees arrived and had to ask for something other than our saucy salad plates to eat off of. Waited and waited to order dessert, then waited and waited for it to arrive... two bites in he put the bill on the table. Not good, Axe. Not good. "

The food is meticulously prepared, the staff is beaming with positive energy and friendly in that perfect subtle but genuine way. The space itself could not be more spot on - very minimal, very warm, just perfect. The outdoor dining area is an absolute hidden gem as well. With small fireplaces scattered about, it's fun to sneak to the back after a meal to enjoy a cup of coffee or night cap!"

  • "We made the mistake of having a 6PM reservation. We arrived early and thought we would have a glass of wine. To our displeasure, we had to stand outside until 6:10 before we were let into the restaurant. They saw us and others standing in the freezing windy weather and did nothing. People nearby said this happens all the time and they just leave people outside. Wouldn't they rather make at least $30 on 2 glasses of wine? Guess Not. Asked to close the window next to our table because of the cold weather and now the chill we had, and they gave us a hard time. NO one wanted the windows open. Waitress not familiar with food items, food came out way too fast and the whole evening we felt RUSHED. The scallops with polenta crust were over cooked."

  • "We have been to Axe several times before - we love the food - the service is good, and the community table outdoors is nice touch when bringing guests. At this recent visit, we enjoyed our meals, and could hear each other talk. Our choices of meals were all well prepared and interesting, though the Lamb dish was pretty sparse in terms of meat. For the price - this dish could have been more generous. Otherwise, we loved the evening with our friends, the wine was lovely, the fish, polenta with mushrooms was flavorful and had a wonderful texture, the "bowl" was enjoyed by one of our friends, the flat bread and meal sides were all nicely balanced. Thanks Axe for a nice evening."

  • "Love axe and go all the time but had issues with hostess the other night. She told me she could not seat me untily party arrived which is a fine policy except for the two exceptions she seated as single parties neare. If you have a policy you need to keep it at all levels with all customers. When she finally sat us she said I need the table in an hour. I love axe but I know this hostess will not last if she keeps this up."

  • "I really enjoy the food at Axe, but a few things to note: it is ridiculously expensive, the dishes are more like tapas (at entree prices) & the dining room is crazy loud. That said, they were nice enough to put us in a corner, as requested, since one member of our party was hard of hearing - that happened to be next to the door on a cold & blustery night - & the door does not automatically close. Because it is patronized by the glitterati, they bring their unruly children (truly inappropriate) to run amok and no one says anything (at easily $75 a head, that's not the dining experience I want to have). The food is inventive and delicious, but honestly, it's like a snack - and I don't eat giant portions. Wine is way overpriced."

  • "3 stars for the food 1 star for the RUDE manager who gives this place a bad name among west side restaurants. Experience was nice however, restaurant managers was not. Manager very regime and forgets that customers become repeat customers for more than the food & ambiance. She is not accommodating, rather bossy, pushy and militant. SHE will tell you where you can sit based on her booking schedule, not by your preference even though you have a reservation. With so many other great food options within walking distance it's hard to believe she would be so abrasive. Quite honestly, she personifies the typical stereotype of the restaurant hostesses/managers we all laugh at! May or may not ever consider going back."

  • "This was my first visit to Axe. Exceptional food preparation and presentation. Tapas style, smaller sized portions allow you to sample many different tastes, none of which disappoint. Indoor seating can be very noisy. Outdoor seating is wonderful but can be chilly. Love this place and will be back with friends"

  • "I took out a group of Finnish gastronomes to eat at AXE and it met our expectations. A beautiful space that offers a deep and well-curated wine list. The food was good but nothing terribly fancy, rather it was simple, homey and upscale without being pretentious. I would highly recommend it for a romantic experience--for however cramped the space was, it felt really intimate and private. It was a nice evening."
