Diner Reviews
  • "Very enjoyable! Lively! Fish and seafood are awesome!"

  • "Food was great. Our waiter was nice. The hostesses were not welcoming at all; almost like they did not like their job. It's a pity because we liked the food and our waiter. Also, the tables are too close to the bar. We had a reservation and our table was about 2 feet from the bar. The people without reservations who waited in the bar kept accidentally hitting us with their purses and bar stools."

  • "The reviews definitely lived up to their hype. The atmosphere was loud and crowded but that's par for the course in NYC. The food was so amazing that I didn't want to leave my leftovers even though I had no way of heating them up the next day. The tuna tartare appetizer was the best I've ever had with the crispy crunchy topping that covered it. We will absolutely be back to eat here again the next time we visit the city."

  • "not thee first place you'd choose for a land-lubbers' meal but a great selection of Sea Food. Prices are high but in line with other top nyc fish restaurants. The noise level is too high if you want to use the dinner as a business function or you want to hear your friends talk without shouting, so you probably need to ask for a table in a quiet area if you need to ho;da a comversation."

  • "The first time we went, we were very impressed with everything - food, service, table. We then booked another evening there but found service lacking (almost appeared to be over a shift change). We had to ask for cutlery three times & no assistance with menu or recommendations. Very different from the first time. If we had the second night service was on the first night, we would not have came back a second time."

  • "I just returned from a two week trip to Athens, Santorini and Crete. I can honestly say the food at Avra was every bit as good as we had in Greece. It was so good I ate there for lunch one day and dinner the next! Keep up the great work."

  • "Such a great quite place with outstanding food and extensive wine list."

  • "Had such a great experience here! Great variety of local and imported fish, prepared simply and absolutely delicious! Well appointed, but comfortable restaurant. Will be a staple when I visit the City!"

  • "It's a good thing the food is so good cause the tight fit of the tables make the dining experience a bit compromised."

  • "There were three of us. Two were a married couple, in from Washington, D.C. They had a wonderful time in New York City. On a Sunday night, we had dinner beginning at 6 p.m. at Avra. The weather was perfect. We sat outside, close to the open interior of the restaurant. The food was delicious, as always. Superb! We were all happy. When I need to think of a "special occasion" place, I think of Avra. Eating near or outside is my favorite. Inside is cavernous and can be very noisy. But a lot of the young 'uns like it that way."

  • "Small tables for two.... jammed next to each other. Felt were part the next table's conversation. Other than that...not to be missed!"
    Dined on 7/2/2014
  • "The prices are very high in terms of the food and wine offer"

  • "Fantastic place for grilled fish, but lots of stuff for meat lovers as well."

  • "I went with my wife and had a great overall experience. The place is really nice and service is really personalized. Food was awesome!"

  • "Was in down for a convention and staying on the east side - this place was excellent - close to major hotels so that you can just walk around the corner and be there. Once you go into the place it feels like you are in Greece - nice décor and seating is very open so that you have privacy. As for the food - tremendous offering and the fish is fresh - I would highly recommend this place instead of a typical NY steak house that everyone seems to favor for a business dinner. Wine list is nice and the price of food is reasonable. Get the fresh fruit platter for dessert and stay awhile after dinner and enjoy conversation with friends or family. I liked it so much I went back the second night with my two daughters who enjoyed it too."

  • "very disappointed with service - our waiter was either too busy or did not care, we waited a very long time for our meal, food was not hot, vegetables were unevenly warmed(in microwave?) and he ignored us"

  • "this is the second time we have been to Avra, and the food continues to be outstanding. There is nothing like really fresh seafood. Our waiter was extremely friendly, no attitude at all, and very informative."

  • "Was very excited to eat here as it had a very good Greek wine list, especially from Santorini, which is highly difficult to get in the states. Service was horrible. All aspects...from the time we walked in to be seated for our reservation to the waiter...seemed to care less about any type of service. Got our drink order but had to be reminded twice additional that we would like our drinks. I had asked in my reservation (which i booked the day before) to have a table outside; there are a ton of them. When we arrived, the hostess said that we couldn't have an outside table because they were 1st come 1st serve/if there is one available when we arrive, we could have one. Call me crazy but i thought that's why you make a reservation."

  • "One of the gems in the neighborhood if you want authentic, delicious Greek food. A little pricey, but it comes with the territory."

  • "Loved this place, excellent mediterranean food!!! will def. be back."

  • "We went on a Friday night and to our surprise the restaurant wasn't too full. It was raining that day. Our waiter Joseph was attentive, knowledgeable and very personable. The food was excellent, especially the branzino. Everything we tried was delicious including the dessert. They did not rush us at all, so we sat and chilled for a while. Will come back for sure."

  • "This is definitely a go-to restaurant in NYC if you are craving for Greek food. Good décor, food, crowd, etc.; service was not among the most impressive ones considering the price you paid but it won't be a highlighting point as you mainly focus on the food. Would definitely recommend anyone in the neighborhood looking for authentic and delicious Greek food with in-theme atmosphere."

  • "We tried this restaurant based on the recommendation of a friend. It was everything promised and more. Our Server, Demetri was excellent. He was welcoming fun & friendly, made wonderful suggestions in both wines and food and we were made to feel that we were valued as customers. We enjoyed a greek salad the had vegetables that tasted like they were just picked from a garden along with two large slices of feta cheese, crab cakes that were by far the best we ever had anywhere, steak and lamb chops that were cooked to perfection and baklava that just melted in your mouth. We were not rushed at all and had we not had theater tickets we probably would have stayed longer. We will definitely be returning next time we are in NYC"

  • "I have eaten at Avra before for dinner not for lunch. I found the service awful/food was so so. I will think about returning which would probably be no."

  • "Great food with large selection of fresh fish, wait staff v helpful and knowledgable, super wine list, good atmosphere, would definitely go back."

  • "Restaurants in midtown tend to have a very corporate vibe. This one somehow has much more personality both in its food and atmosphere. If you love fresh seafood and/or Greek this one is a must. Their wine list, salads, apps, and wide range of fresh fish from the Atlantic and Mediterranean are all great. Add this one to your key go-to list in midtown."

  • "My family and I thoroughly enjoyed the food and the wine was excellent, however, we were less than impressed by the abrupt, abrasive service. Dining accommodations felt cramped, outdoors, and very, very loud indoors."

  • "Second time at this greek seafood stalwart. Fresh ingredients, lots of natural flavors served by courteous, attentive and knowledgeable wait staff. Best tomatoes I've ever had provide the foundation for a terrific Greek salad, tender octopus and wonderful grilled fish. For sure to return."

  • "We had a wonderful Father's Day lunch at Avra Estitorio. It was a beautiful day and we sat outside. We had seafood and lamb as well as salads and appetizers. All were delicious. Our waiter was very attentive and made sure our dining experience was delightful. I have dined at Avra several times and have always been very satisfied with our dining experience. We will return and will recommend Avra to our friends."

  • "I HAVE EATEN AT AVRA QUITE A FEW TIMES OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS. GENERALLY IT IS A LOVELY RESTAURANT WITH EXCELLENT SERVICE. IN MY OPINION THE BEST SELECTIONS ON THE MENU ARE THE APPETIZERS. THEY ARE AUTHENTIC AND QUITE DELICIOUS. THIS TIME I HAD ARTIC CHAR WHICH I LOVE) AND IT WAS SLIGHTLY OVERCOOKED AND DRY. MY COMPANION HAD LOBSTER AND HE FELT IT WAS TOUGH. BUT EVERY OTHER THING WE HAD WAS DELICIOUS.... BEAUTIFULLY PLATED AND NICELY SERVED. I DO LIKE THIS RESTAURANT AND WOULD CERTAINLY GO BACK."

  • "I visit NYC several times each year at stay at the Marriott Eastside. Avra is one of my favorites and is just around the corner. My last visit was on a very rainy Friday evening. The staff was welocming and sat me in the Wine Room. Very pleasant."

  • "The food is excellent and the atmosphere very pretty. It is a bit loud do if you want an intimate dinner look elsewhere. This was my second time at Avra. Both times the service wasn't great. The waiter didn't seem very interested in serving us. It was a business dinner and good service would have been appreciated and was expected. Maybe both times I was unlucky and got a bad server, who knows."

  • "The service was great and so was the food. The outside seating is a little noisy."

  • "I was there on my birthday and the female bartender was unfriendly to me and my wife. One of the bus boys made the comment to my wife "oh lady eat too much" which may not have been intentionally insulting, but indicated a lack of professionism. Waitress was incredibly unfriendly and aloof. While leaving the host staff just staired at us and did not say thank you, or good evening. Great food, won't go back because of the unfriendly staff."

  • " I have been going to AVRA for more than 15 years since is the best Greek restaurant I know in NYC (and I have gone to many others). The menu is diverse, food is always excellent and the service is attentive. A great place to go, whether for just two or a group of 10. You will never be disappointed , even if you go on a Monday night."

  • "Not easy to get an outdoor table in this very popular restaurant, but easier if you get there before the crowds. the charcoal wild branzino is fabulous! The grilled Portuguese octopus had too many capers, making it a little too salty. Have been there many times and will definitely come back any time I have a chance although the price is also salty."
