Diner Reviews
  • "I could not say enough great things about this, our 2nd. visit to Avra. My sushi tuna and my wife's lamb chops were both outstanding. 1st. rate wine list and a warm and friendly staff made this a perfect experience."

  • "Excellent food and service; pleasant atmosphere, particularly if you can snag an outdoor table. Very enjoyable and satisfying dining experience. The lunch prix fixe is a great opportunity to sample some wonderful food at a more reasonable price."

  • "Service was a bit inconsistent, waiting quite a while, finally ordering from one person because our server was "busy", then ending up with the original server. The grilled fish was what we went for. It was well seasoned, flavorful, and simply prepared, and what we wanted. Fish was deboned and divided at the table as expected, but ended up looking a bit of a mess on the plates, so presentation was not particularly attractive. Baklava was excellent. Restaurant was VERY loud. "

  • "Have eaten lunch there for years. Great fixed price menu. First time for dinner this week. Absolutely terrific in all respects. Highly recommend this to all who love Greek food, freshest fish, highly competent staff, and happy diners."

  • "A Palm Sunday brunch in this lovely midtown haven . . .genuine magic. Hard to imagine a better blend of food/setting/service. If the open kitchen and beautiful fresh whole fish on the grill in classic Greek mode don't get your appetite racing . . .check your pulse. Only regret is we live 1200 miles away. Will return as often as plans allow. Ask for Dmitri as your guide to this experience (and don't miss the grilled octopus)."

  • "The food at this restaurant was very good, but the service and the staff were so indifferent it detracted from the experience. The person who seated us was aloof and made it appear she was doing us a favor to show us to our seats. Our server was borderline rude. It's a shame because the meals were very good, perfectly cooked fish served piping hot and timely. But given the attitude we experienced, I wouldn't return and I wouldn't recommend it."

  • "We showed up 15 minutes early for our reservation and were seated 15 minutes late. They took us to a nice table in back and we were offered water very shortly after sitting down. The food was amazing, but it was very noisy and when we asked for help with the wine, the sommelier said "Take a look!" then left. Was not impressed."

  • "- Crammed during dinner on week nights - Very loud - Cocktails don't worth it, better drink it neat at the same price (was the worst watered-down Old-fashioned) - Food is good - greek salad is good but nothing special. Tonos (Grilled Tuna) was fresh and nicely presented, but too much oil in sauteed greens."

  • "This is a place I come everytime I'm in NYC. (It's a long trip from home.) The food is consistently well prepared and is a good selection of Greek food and wines. What I discovered long ago however is the noise level in the restaurant can make it hard to have a conversation. The solution, reserve outside! I sat there recently and no it was not that warm out, but heat lamps made it delightful. It was quiet sitting in the "courtyard" and gave romantic overtones to what is always an awsome dining experience."

  • "Very good food and service at this midtown greek restaurant. Seats are a tad too close together, but if you are in the back or the restaurant, then the overall noice level actually helps it feeling a bit more private. One of the best greeks on the eastside."

  • "Noise level unbearable inside, but before we left we told hostess of this and she suggested outside with heat lamps and it was perfect. Good employee to save the day. Food excellent. Will be back"

  • "Great restaurant, excellent food and service. I make an effort to eat at Avra every time I'm in NYC. Great for lunch and dinner, with clients, business associates, friends or even alone. All Good!"

  • "I have been to this Restaurant numerous times and have always found it a little less than welcoming when one reports in - amazing how much a smile and a simple 'welcome' could do. The noise level can discourage conversation after a point - the throat begins to get hoarse"

  • "Absolutely delicious! Can't wait to go back to NYC to enjoy their delicious Greek cuisine and fine Greek wine. Try the Chateau Julia - outstanding!"

  • "My party of 4 arrived promptly for our 7:15 reservation. We stood in a crowded, noisy bar area for 45 minutes waiting for our table. The host staff was less than helpful, telling us our table would be "just a few seconds". From talking with others at the bar it seems this restaurant routinely overbooks. Be prepared to wait!!! Food was very good"

  • "When my parents come to NYC to visit they frequently stay close to this restaurant and I find it good, but not great. The prices are high for what you get, but this is not a neighborhood for bargains. We were there a few days ago at 5 PM with my parents and two kids. I ordered a roast chicken entree for them with an appetizer for the table while we waited on two members of our party. The chicken came with the rest of the entrees 45 minutes later, which was kind of annoying. There had been a staff shift change and the waiter was nice - things happen, but I wasn't impressed. Food is straightforward and good, but nothing amazing. Menu is very seafood heavy - 1 chicken, 1 lamb and 1 steak entree for non-seafood eaters. NIce terrace outside."

  • "We were in for an industry meeting and met a relative there for dinner. The food was excellent...a perfectly cooked piece of swordfish. The wine list was heavily populated with Greek wines, none of which was familiar and most were expensive. On the other hand, there was a bottle of Stags Leap chardonnay that was somewhat reasonably priced. We liked the dinner well enough that we returned the following evening with some business associates. One of the guests doesn't eat seafood and ordered a steak. It was acceptable but not on the level of the seafood. If you like seafood and appreciate a Greek twist then I recommend Avra."

  • "really good food and so much fun to split a bunch of appetizers among our group of 5. It was a bit expensive but we'll remember the meal and night for a long time. The desserts were also really good -- I recommend the Greek yogurt with honey. This is a good restaurant especially for business meeting in a part of the city that doesn't have a ton of great restaurants. The only thing I can criticize is that the entrance is very small and there was a crowd waiting...it was difficult to get to the podium for our reservation and then to squeeze through the crowd to our table."

  • "You have to like fish at this unique Greek restaurant. Good place to try unique Greek themed dishes. Expensive and trendy. It is good, but not exactly our cup of tea, and it's an expensive cup of tea at that."

  • "One of our favorite restaurants. Love the bread, olives, radishes and humous to start. Wonderful fish and sides. Highly recommend."

  • "A great seafood restaurant and a favorite with my wife and I for dinner, we've not been for lunch. If 'romantic' means cozy and quiet to you, this is not the place! It's always packed, noisy and 'energetic and it's sometimes a struggle to get to the bar to get a drink. Even with a reservation, expect to wait 15-20 minutes for your table (struggle at the bar in the interim). However, the food makes it all worth it."

  • "This is a very good spot near grand central for fresh fish and seafood. Grilled fresh fish options by the pound are very good and well cooked. Shrimp was a little over done in the mixed shrimp, scallop, mussel, clam dish but the dish was tasty. The pita and dip appetizer was great; eggplant feta and fava dips. No flavors too overpowering and just the right mix. Wine options were plentiful. About 20% overpriced. Baklava dessert was delicious. Large and not overly sweet which many esserts like that are. The best part restaurant are its proximity to Grand Central, and great if you have an expense account. Reservation was honored right away. The place was PACKED and fairly loud, but we were able to talk resonably well with little shouting."

  • "The restaurant called 2 times prior to confirm the reservation for this very important business lunch for 6. We were seated 10 minutes early but 2 guests were advised we had not yet arrived. I requested door be advised of out still pending guests. 25 minutes later, I went to the door only to find our guests waiting outside in the cold looking for us. Our guests were told 2 times we had not yet arrived. Food was good, service support terrible."

  • "I really enjoyed the food there. The cocktails are ok. They really made a fan of me with the hummus. It's to die for. The best hummus I've ever had. My cuttle fish was a bit chewy....which is how I've had it mostly. However, I know it's capable of been prepared to achieve a good tender consistency. I'd definitely go back!!"

  • "This was our first time dining here. The waiter was excellent and took the time to show us the fresh fish and explain the differences in the taste, where they came from, and how they were prepared. The food was excellently prepared in a Mediterranean style with just a simple olive oil and lemon sauce. Perfect! Our only complaint was the crowed nature or the tables. We were in a space where five tables for two were placed between two pillars with only about six inches between the tables. Very difficult to get in and out from the one side of the table. Overall an excellent choice for fresh seafood. We will return."

  • "The best and most authentic Greek restaurant in Manhattan specializing in fresh fish. I have eaten there both for Lunch and Dinner, and have held special events there (after-party for my thirteen-year old daughter's Greek Orthodox baptism in 2001). On every occasion I have experienced superb service and enjoyed the best Greek food available west of Hellas."
