Diner Reviews
  • "Great evening! I loved how our server picked up that it was my wife's birthday and included a candle on my wife's dessert that she ordered."

  • "Great food and excellent service. Love having choice of small, medium,or large plate items."

  • "I was a little unsure about our reservation when we arrived. The hostess seemed a little confused. There was confusion as to where we would sit, there was not a table for us, we decided to sit at the chefs table. The food was good and the service was adequate."

  • "I love AVO. The food is wonderful, unique, fresh and organic. You get a little of that New York restaurant feel but with southern hospitality service."

  • "First time to dine at Avo and it was excellent. The food and the service were exceptional. We will be going back for another visit soon."

  • "Great food (we had the fish of the day and rabbit sausage) but expensive."

  • "We stopped in Birmingham on a trip to Florida from St. Louis. We found Avo on open table a decided to give it try. It was one of the top five dining experiences we have had between our life in St. Louis and trips to Boston, New York, Colorado, Wyoming, and Florida within the last five years. It ranks up there with The Mad Hatter on Sanibel, Acero in the Lou, The Atlantic Fish Co in Boston or even the Four Seasons in Jackson Hole. Original, delicious and fresh food was served to us. If you live in Birmingham, you should know you have a gem. "

  • "The food was excellent. I had the California Burger. However, the service was EXTREMELY slow."

  • "The food was amazing and the atmosphere makes this restaurant even more romantic. Well worth it and we'll be back for more! Not a disappointment at all. "

  • "Awesome place to grab a bite and a drink. We love sitting outside either on patio down below or the balcony above. This visit we had the best table up top with view of the circle in Mountain Brook. Server was great and very knowledgeable with drink options and the menu. Draft beer selection is good. Wine selection is very good and some nights have half price bottles. There is something on the menu for everyone although having two menus is confusing to most. Great place for small bites or large full meals. Reservation seating was on time on a packed night -- Mother's Day!!!"

  • "I found the food very goo but a bit over priced for what you are getting. Also, the waitress was back far too often to check on us. It was hard to hold a conversation with an question every three minutes. Maybe on a busier night it's the opposite? I still would go back."

  • "Three of our five had never been so I enjoyed seeing them experience the delicious food, fun atmosphere and great service for the first time. Will always recommend this as a place for a little loud fun as well as a romantic dinner destination. Wish all visitors to B'ham knew of this place - the town is well represented by some fine restaurants and AVO is definitely one to be experienced."

  • "Great food, excellent service and good company. Keep up the good work! Looking forward to our next visit."

  • "Second visit still unexciting menu and not a lot attention to detail with respect to food preparation or service."

  • "This stunning restaurant is "just around the corner" and one of the few open on Sunday. Thinking a Sunday night reservation may offer a quieter dining experience at a place we were warned about high noise level, the hubby and I gave Avo a try. We ran into a number of friends downstairs in Dram - nice to see the 50+ crowd out and about. Then we headed upstairs to Avo where we were stopped at the top of the stairs by a long line of diners waiting to be seated, and it kept backing up behind us. We we finally seated at our table. The restaurant is contemporary cool and the wait staff was attentive. Our food was very good, but conversation was near impossible. Because of the noise we may not return."

  • "We stopped by Dram/Avo right after work one evening, and it was a perfect end to a busy week. We started with a cocktail downstairs -- blackberry winter -- delicious. Then went upstairs and took advantage of the nice evening to sit outside. Enjoyed a series of appetizers that all tasted delicious, especially the pork belly poutine, beer braised mussels, and sonoma sliders. We will definitely go back."

  • "The food is always good, the offerings innovative and novel. I hope the Kale Caesar is on the menu more often ...one of the best salads I have ever eaten. The Rabbit Sausage Bangers and Mash was good, not spectacular; hence the lost star. I'll be back, as usual ...love this place."

  • "My wife and had a wonderful dinner at AVO. It was quite a vibrant atmosphere, and the service was great. The Avo dip is a must-get appetizer. I would recommend as a great special occasion spot if you don't mind a little noise."

  • "I took my girlfriend on Valentines Day and we had a blast. We had a reservation for 10 pm and told them to let us know if there was anything available earlier. The manager texted me around 8:15 and asked if I was close and we had a table by the time we got there. Our waiter was very knowledgeable, and made great suggestions, we took all of them, and were not disappointed in any way. Suggestions: muscles for appetizers, lamb chops for the main, and bread pudding for desert. It is very pricy, but for people that can afford it or as for us, a special occasion, worth it."

  • "Very good food, in a town known for good restaurants. A busy, active place; good for groups."

  • "Avo is one of our favorite restaurants. The staff is very friendly and efficient. The food has a varied menu where there is something in all price ranges. The kitchen is very consistent with very good chefs. The atmosphere can be quiet upstairs and very energetic downstairs. Overall, excellent."

  • "We are regulars and love the diverse menu and upscale casual atmosphere. Two venues with different feel share menus, both good. Good quick supper or fun dinner with friends."
    Dined on 1/7/2014
  • "Very good restaurant - food was great, service was great. Staff was helpful and attentive. Only issue was that the noise level was a bit loud for the setting. Could be a nice quiet romantic spot but the large groups made it loud and kind of ruined the ambience. Otherwise it was a great experience."

  • "No complaints about the food at Avo. It has a limited menu, but everything we ordered was outstanding. The only draw back with the restaurant is the noise level. It was probably the noisiest place we have ever eaten. You almost had to shout to be heard. We would love to go back, but this might keep us away."

  • "Great meeting spot for unwinding. Good food, great service and atmosphere."

  • "Service was great, food was good and restaurant was very loud. We went Monday before Christmas and the restaurant was very crowded and very loud. There was 5 of us and it was very hard to carry on a conversation without yelling and leaning across the table."
    Dined on 12/23/2013
  • "Enjoyed a great dinner and great service on a Wednesday night the week before Christmas. The noise level was louder than usual but understandable due to Christmas gatherings upstairs. Our waiter was very nice and very knowledgeable and made good recommendations."
    Dined on 12/18/2013
  • "This is an excellent place. It's in a great location, in a great building, and has wonderful food. Both times that I have been, though, I feel like I've had to shout at the person on the other side of the table in order for them to hear me. I couldn't hear the waiter when she described the specials. The restaurant wasn't overly crowded, but there must not be anything to dampen the noise and conversations, laughs, and table noise just bounces off the walls and floors."

  • "The malbec reduction prime filet was grilled to perfection! Thus far, it is my favorite dish."

  • "Avo reminds me of a typical restaurant in Montreal. Montreal is known to have great restaurants, rivaling what you would find in Paris but affordable. I like the sleek modern (and environment friendly) style of Avo and the integration of the best of ingredients of Alabama. Avo is definitely a good break from the Five Points restaurants."

  • "Always enjoy the food and the overall feel of AVO. I think people are intimidated by the location. . .GREAT GREAT place. Excellent food. Venture out. . . get out of the ruts of the dang chains and support the local food. There are great restaraunts around this city, and guess what most of them are NOT at the Summit or on 280."
    Dined on 12/7/2013
  • "We've been to AVO 3 times, and maybe we've just been unlucky, but it's always so loud that we literally have to shout to each other across the table. I don't plan on going back."
    Dined on 12/4/2013
  • "Everything was great, except I am not sure if their idea of country ham is the same as ours. It was Canadian bacon in our books. Food was great - just different - not the expected. Loved eating on the porch overlooking Mountain Brook."
    Dined on 11/10/2013
  • "Food was delicious, but noise level was ridiculously loud and made if difficult to talk across the table."

  • "We were just in Birmingham for a couple days, and this was the best meal by far. I had the lamb burger with the truffle Parmesan fries, and it was simply wonderful....finished of with some bourbon ice cream...YUM!!!"

  • "We had a reservation and were seated immediately. Very good food with unique menu selections you will not find anywhere else. While we went simple on the food selection, my wife stated her hamburger was the best she had ever had. Beer selection is very good and our waiter, Corey, was superb. Great place to order several small plates to share or split a burger, etc."
