A word from Avenues Bistro - Brookside
Avenues Bistro offers an array of selections for every palate and features many regional European specialties. Chef/Owner Joe Birch, voted one of “America’s Top 25 New Chefs” in 2007, comes from a diverse European ancestry and has for the past 20 years traveled across and studied the cuisines of Europe. These travels & experiences, his vast culinary training, & many of his own family recipes are the inspiration behind both the concept and the creation of the dishes at Avenues. Birch’s kitchen is led by Executive Chef Mario Galan, a rising star on the Kansas City culinary scene. In 2007 he & Birch earned Avenues “Best New Restaurant- Kansas City”. Followed up in 2008 as being recognized by Ingrams Magazine as one of "Kansas Citys Top 3 Overall Restaurants". Equally impressive is the wine program at Avenues.   • "The place has above average food with average price. So the value is good. The place is very noise. But provide great wine list with reasonable price. I had prime rib sandwich, which was tender and juicy. However, if they can trim down the fat before place the meat to sandwich, it will be much healthier, and taste better. The price is $16, not too cheap. The side dish is delicious, Asia Slaw. My husband had short rib, very well prepared, tender and tasty, with lots of butter in the mash potato, and also not too health. The price is $23. My 7 year old boy had Chicken soup, with side and a nice chocolate covered strawberry. It was only $7. However, when he asked for one more strawberry, we were charged for $3 for one piece of strawberry."

  • "I met an old friend, that I hadn't seen in a very long time, for lunch. We both enjoyed our meal and appreciated the service. They were attentive, but not overly which allowed us to visit and catch up. It was a lovely lunch!"

  • "We celebrated our birthdays with our family -- five adults and one small child -- with dinner at Avenue's and had a very relaxed and enjoyable evening. Delicious food, good wine, delightful desserts. Cozy atmosphere. Total cost about $50 per person with tip ... a bit pricey but worth it. The staff was very friendly, and efficient and helped us select a menu that maximized our money spent. We dine there with some frequency, and we always enjoy it. It's a great Brookside Restaurant and a great place for entertaining guests, friends, and family ... or just for two in comfortable setting."

We were especially impressed when he was more than willing to immediately clean up a mess in front of our table on the carpeting. We brought company from out of state to your restaurant not knowing what it would be like. Thank you for a pleasant experience!"

  • "Brunch on Sunday is very enjoyable at Avenues Bistro. I ordered from the menu and got the buffet also. My husband chose only the buffet. Everything was very tasty. Great selection and variety. Sure you will enjoy it!"

  • "We have been going to Avenue's Bistro in for about 5 years. We really enjoy the food. The waiter told us about a nice bottle of French wines that was on special that night. We weren't sure if it would fit both of our tastes, but he assured us it would and we had no problem finishing off the bottle. The waiter told us we could take the unfinished bottle with us. We almost always have the bacon wrapped dates, but decided to try the scallops this time. Very tasty and cooked just right. My husband had the short rib risotto which was prevent and I had the Kansas city strip cooked to perfection. The desserts were hard to pass up and so large that we decided to share one. All in all great food and a wonderful evening."

  • "So wonderful that my sister and I happened upon this fabulous place. The food was amazing and so many items I had never experienced before. A bit pricy but WELL worth it. Staff were attentive and answered all of our questions. The one question our wait staff did not know the answer to, she went back and asked the chef. It was a memorable experience and we are sure to visit Avenues again when we are back in Kansas City!"

  • "The food was delicious! I highly recommend the Brussels Sprouts Carbonara!! However, we had one item which was not served according to the description in the menu. The scallops were described as being served over a cauliflower puree, but were served over mashed potatoes instead. Since I follow an eating plan where I don't mix carbs and fats, this was an important part of the meal to me. We brought this fact to our server's attention, but she made no offer to check into it or to bring the cauliflower puree."

  • "The Sunday Brunch at Avenues Bistro is tasteful, in many ways! The buffet has so many offerings,each of them well-prepared and seasoned beautifully, and yet isn't overwhelming. Getting the main course with the buffet included is a real value! The Mimosas and Bloody Mary's are well prepared. The service is attentive but not intrusive. It's a lovely venue for a special occasion! Another plus is its being located near a variety of interesting shops--like World's Window!"

  • "Our entrees were terrible! While our server Nick was attentive, he never asked how our meal was and I discovered after arriving home that while I had ordered a $9 glass of Red Rhone wine , he had brought me a $12 glass of Manceau Bordeaux instead. My bad for not checking the bill more closely while there. The major problem were the entrees which truly were bad. We both ordered the Lobster Bucatini, which I had enjoyed two weeks ago. What arrived was a plate of tasteless overdone pasta with lobster meat that clearly was made up of the tips of the claws. There was absolutely NO toasted almonds nor charred peppers as described on the menu. While we should have complained while there, we were with a friend and didn't want to make a scene."

  • "I love this place. I love the inventiveness of the menu for lunch, brunch, happy hour and dinner. They have a smashing happy hour both early and late most days with some nice tapa type dishes at a discount, as well as drinks. I can't say enough good things about them. You really must try it and with at least 24 hours notice and a reservation they have a off hours special called Tasteables that gives 50-60% off which is an amazing deal!"

The food was delicious, and it's presentation so appealing. My husband was "wowed" with the boneless short ribs. Although the restaurant was busy, we felt the service was attentive. We shared a very enjoyable dining experience here and plan to go back in the near future to try the small plates and another wine from their descriptive wine list."

  • "We selected Avenues Bistro after it was listed in a news article of top restraints in KC. I was apprehensive as the reviews online were mixed. Our experience was great. The service was excellent, attentive without being overbearing. The food was great with wide variety. While their food is not at the fancy foody level of Justice or Michael Smiths it was still a high caliber with well developed flavors. The pre-fix option was a good value with most the entries included as an option. The wine list while relatively small in comparison of some fine dining establishments yet still had good choices. We were surprised the restaurant was over half empty on a Friday night at 7:30 so the noise level was very low."

  • "We've dined at Avenues since it opened. In the past it was hit or miss on both service and food. But in the last few years each time we came for lunch or dinner it was quite good and the menu was interesting. When relatives came to town and I needed to find something good for Sunday brunch that served earlier than 10 AM Avenues Bistro appeared in Open Table. I booked it and boy were we amazed. They offer a buffet of fruit, salads, sweets, and standard breakfast fare plus menu selections of items like lobster benedict, lemon waffle, grand Marnier french toast, and my favorite, pumpkin pancakes for a few dollars more. But here's the treat - the menu selections include the buffet! Yummy carbs and protein. Great choice for breakfast in KC."

  • "Love the new décor. Normally this is one of our most favorite restaurants, but was somewhat disappointed in the meal this visit. Flavor seemed to be lacking in the buccatini and short ribs was a very small portion of meat with it being a full entrée. Will still go back and try again and this is normally a guaranteed great meal. Service was terrific and the Sangria is still the best in town :)"
