A word from Avenues Bistro - Brookside
Avenues Bistro offers an array of selections for every palate and features many regional European specialties. Chef/Owner Joe Birch, voted one of “America’s Top 25 New Chefs” in 2007, comes from a diverse European ancestry and has for the past 20 years traveled across and studied the cuisines of Europe. These travels & experiences, his vast culinary training, & many of his own family recipes are the inspiration behind both the concept and the creation of the dishes at Avenues. Birch’s kitchen is led by Executive Chef Mario Galan, a rising star on the Kansas City culinary scene. In 2007 he & Birch earned Avenues “Best New Restaurant- Kansas City”. Followed up in 2008 as being recognized by Ingrams Magazine as one of "Kansas Citys Top 3 Overall Restaurants". Equally impressive is the wine program at Avenues.   • "Crowd is lively and loud and seems neighborly. Service was attentive but to be called "dear" by the server was strange. Had high hopes for the Brussels sprouts salad but it was an uninspired pile of mostly soggy lettuce. My friends were happier with their orders. I'll try again. The menu is eclectic, happy hour offers inviting and I love Brookside."

  • "I had one of the best meals of my life at the bistro only one month ago. I had the heightened expectations for brunch buteft extremely disappointed. The food arrived luke warm and was tasteless. The coffee was wven bad. Our sever was inexperienced and iattentive. I will not go back for brunch. You are better of going to a diner."

  • "I thought Avenues Bistro was a good value for the food and drink, especially the bottomless bloody Mary /screwdriver/ Mimosa for $8. It wasn't an over-the-top great drink, but it was pretty darn good for the money. The brunch entrees allow unlimited trips to the buffet, which include several pasta options, prosciutto, muffins, etc. I had the lobster Benedict, which comes on fairly thick not-English-muffiny muffins. The lobster had little flavor, and I found similar consistency lobster meat at Costco that day. I might try the Costco brand to establish a DNA link. My wife had the Monte Cristo sandwich, which is served on thick but very tasty bread reminiscent of French toast but with a crumbly consistency. High bread-to-meat ratio."

  • "We love the appetizers as they are always very good, but this time we tried the burger made with ground filet mignon. I have eaten a lot of filet and a lot of burgers in my day. This was the best burger I have ever eaten!! Bar none. Next to sex, having kids and jumping out of airplanes this is one the top five things I have ever experienced in my life.(currently 51 yrs old) Most tender and tasty burger ever. Just when I thought they had out done themselves AB comes back for more. This place is fabulous!!"

  • "First timer but will go again. The food was outstanding and our waitress, only employed 3 days, had such a great grasp of the menu and was able to suggest different dishes. Service was outstanding - never once had to call the waitress - she just knew and was there. We're going back."

  • "The 4 course meal for $59 is an outstanding deal and a great way to taste many of the wonderful menu items at Avenues Bistro. Our server, Brandy, was one of the best I've had, and I eat out 3-4 nights every week on the road. We started with the stuffed mushrooms, beet and goat cheese salads, had the Sole Piccata and Lobster Ravioli for entrees, and finished off with the bread pudding. Overall fantastic meal!"

  • "My wife and I typically enjoy Sunday brunch at Avenues. Their concept is a little different-you can order a breakfast entrée and eat from the buffet table. The buffet table is a nice mixture of meats and cheeses, pasta salads, fruit, pastries and some breakfast items like scrambled eggs and sausages, etc. We both ordered the eggs benedict for the entrée, me the traditional and she with crab cakes. The eggs were a bit overdone and the hollandaise a bit thick. They are served with potatoes that are roasted chucks without much merit. We agreed next time we would not order the benedicts and possibly just do the buffet table. A plus was that our waitress did a good job of taking care of us."

  • "We made reservations for 12:45 and were not sat until 1:15. By this point we were concerned about our time because we had a 2pm event to attend just down the street. We gave the server 5 min but after no sign of a server tending to us we decided to go down the street to Panera. The hostess was apologetic but the problem was the restaurant overbooked itself. Not to sound crass...but that is not the customer's fault. Unfortunately logistics tend to repetively be Avenue's problem. In the end, I was there but did not have time to wait for service. An hour should have been plenty of time for seating, eating, and leaving. Too bad."

  • "Avenues has become one of, if not, our favorite KC restaurant. They always seem to be able to meet or exceed my expectations for food and service. Prices are reasonable for the well prepared dishes and location. While we do have a special staff member we like to dine with, most of the others do a very good job. Since we prefer to come earlier in the evening, and get in on Happy Hour in the bar area, we generally do not feel the rush as one might find later. The Bartenders are knowledgeable and will engage you in conversation about various libations, while offering their own favorites. Next visit will be for another of their fabulous brunches!"

  • "Service was a bit slow...we waited about 20 minutes for our dinner and one steak was undercooked and was returned to be cooked as per order. When steak was returned it was perfect. Other meals were very well prepared and enjoyed. Wine list was good. Definitely will return and have been here several times before."

  • "I was hesitant to reserve a lunch date so short notice since I was advised that we would have trouble finding a place to sit or park for that matter. While parking is some what up for grabs since it is located on a main thoroughfare, I found the restaurant and staff at Avenues Bistro more than accommodating and the food very good with NO wait on that particular Saturday. I would recommend this neighborhood gem to anyone wanting to eat a quick bite in the area."

Also had the Mediterranean platter which was fun to eat. Only drawback was it was very noisy. Had to practically shout to be heard. Looking forward to their expansion."

The food was very good; we were a little disappointed when the wine we wanted wasn't in stock, but the waiter was able to come back with a good alternate recommendation. Overall, the service was pretty good, except when our waiter brought out Avenues Loyalty cards. They were gift cards that had the corners cut off (which looked really unprofessional) and a form he wanted each of us to fill out. We weren't really interested, but our server would not let it go. He came back 3 or 4 times to ask us for our completed forms. Finally, one person in our party filled it out but it was VERY annoying, especially during a business dinner. Please stop pushing the loyalty cards!"
