We love Avenue 5; have been here several times, and it's always wonderful. Frank, who also bar tends, was our waiter, remembered us from busy Restaurant Week this year when we sat at the bar; he also recalled what we had that evening and the fact that we bought the lady sitting next to us a glass of wine! This place is a gem; love the small plates. People need to enjoy this wonderful restaurant; a couple of others in the neighborhood may overshadow it by name, but Avenue 5 is terrific. We brought friends visiting from NY for this visit; they loved it!

This restaurant had great, very inventive food. I dined with two friends, we all liked the food. One appetizer-Asian chili with fig cornbread was only so-so, flavor of chili was strange but the cornbread was wonderful. We all agreed we would return and/or recommend to friends.

What a great place! Edgy art hanging on the walls, uptown furnishings, easy side street parking. My daughter and I enjoyed brunch before a show at the Old Globe. I had an omelette and she had a Patty Melt. Unlimited champagne is only $10, but I chose a $5 Bloody Mary, which was generously sized and sufficiently spiked. We'd definitely recommend this restaurant for couples or groups or families with older (over 8) children, and we hope to go there again for drinks or dinner.

Great menu of tapas and a diverse selection. As seems to be the trend these days, most of the food was over-sauced to hide what would likely be some fairly tasty natural flavors.

This was our first visit and if we are back in the area again, it will not be our last. We especially liked the fact that many of the entrees were available in a smaller size. Lord knows we all pack on the pounds too easily with the often large portions usually served at dining establishments. We thought the food was just great and the service excellent.

Loved this. We used it for the first time due to a Groupon but will be back for the food! It was fabulous. The food was delicious. Loved the Grilled Romaine salad. On paper you say...whaaattt? But is is really good. The New York steak was cooked to perfection. We each had a small plate. A large plate would have stuffed us. The bread and butter were delicious. Loved the calamari! Nice quiet ambiance condusive for talking or a romantic date.

It was our first time here. Found this place through Groupon. Food was good and affordable. Service was also great. We never had to ask for our water to be refilled. Although, the food didn't come fast. Not too long of a wait, just average. The place was not big at all. We think the tables are too close together. You can definitely hear your neighbors's conversation. It felt awkward at times. We would have enjoyed it more if we were seated at the other tables that our not right next to each other. We won't mind going back though, since the food and service were both good. Maybe we'll just sit at the bar next time.

  • Too Bad...

    Dined on 1/21/2013
I really wanted to like this place! We came during restaurant week, but there were very few patrons in the restaurant...so I can't attribute my review to the staff being too busy or the kitchen overwhelmed. It took 40 minutes for our first course to arrive and once it did, it was bad. I had the gnocchi, which tasted like it was sauteed to long & the entire dish taste like it had been overcooked & scorched. I would have told our waiter, who was nice, but he didn't come over. By the time he did, I just wanted to move on to dinner & not deal with it. The entree came about 25 minutes later. It was a shrimp dish with vegetables. The veggies were overcooked and it was swimming in half a bottle of capers. Bread was the only good thing we ate. Boo.

The food was well-prepared and innovative. All of the ingredients complemented each other and contributed to a pleasurable dining experience. The waiter was attentive. However, while the preparation was excellent, the orders stacked up in the kitchen; we waited 45 minutes between the first course and the entree. The quality of the food and service was somewhat negated by a kitchen which couldn't keep up with the demand.

We were looking forward to our meal at Avenue 5. It was a Monday night at 6pm.In a party of 3, We ordered one salad and 3 'small plates'. A basket of bread and butter came after a few minutes. The salad arrived after about 20 minutes. Pretty soon we saw tables that sat AFTER us receiving their food, so we thought-soon-it will be us. After 45 minutes, we began to question. the waiter said, j'ust a few more minutes' Not satisfied with 15 MORE minutes of waiting, we asked the hostess, who couldn't have cared less. She checked in the kitchen and said 'it's being plated right'. A few MORE minutes and our order came out, and one of the dishes was wrong. so more waiting. food tasted good, but TOO long to wait for very small plates for the pri

I was pleasantly surprised to have such wonderful food and great service at Avenue 5. The beer list was limited and they didn't have two of the beers we requested, but made satisfactory substitutions. We were very impressed with the food, however! The homemade mushroom ravioli with grape sauce was the best ravioli I have ever tasted!!! It was paper thin, with scrumptious filling and sauce--so glad the waiter recommended it! Also had very tasty pork loin with fig sauce; delicious flavor, but served warm--not hot. Had to ask to reheat and then wasn't as hot as I would have liked. The blue cheese burger and fries was excellent! Would order that again. Overall, very good and wonderful service and ambiance.

The food was amazing - very creative in it's presentation and extremely delicious. One item that was especially remarkable was the wild mushroom bisque. It was especially tasty, but was significantly enhanced by it's presentation. My bowl of soup was served upon a plate strewn with sprigs of fresh rosemary and mint. When it was placed in front of me, the server poured steaming water on the rosemary and mint, creating a fragrant aroma which significantly enhanced the overall effect of the delicious soup. I've never experienced anything like it - it was GREAT. Thanks!

We have been to Avenue 5 a few times over the past few years. Every time we go, it just gets better and better. We really love the option of getting all entrees in a small plate version so we can order and try many things. This week's successes included the forest vapor mushroom soup--you will love the way it is served (a truly sensual experience), the kale salad with avocado, Sea of Cortez Dorado, and Bacon Wrapped Pork Tenderloin with figs. We practically licked our plates clean. For dessert, we had the crustless pecan pie with ice cream and coffee. We ate everything we wanted, including wine, and the bill came to under $80 for two of us. All of these were recommendations by our fabulous waiter, Umberto. We will be back.

Had to send ny steak back, it was overcooked. Came back, after a long wait, still not cooked medium rare as requested. Disappointing. Felt that server needed more training, had a rushed approached to ordering, while we were enjoying a before dinner drink. Restaurant manager needs to spend time with his servers and wait staff and see where they need better training and awareness

We visited during restaurant week. The food was fantastic but the ambiance was - well - nothing. There's no real sense of what this place is in the decor. When we arrived there was live music which in principle is a good thing but it was way too loud. Fortunately we got a table in the back away from the crowd and noise so it wasn't an issue for us but the L shape of the room was odd. Food this good deserves a better setting.

Overall, our group of five had a nice time. The food was great. Happy Hour lasted 'til 7 which was great for us "late" workers. Be sure to order well ahead of the deadline. I ordered my second drink about 10 til 7, but was charged full price for my drink. Also, they added gratuity to our bill. For a group of 5, I've never heard of that.

Outstanding food, small menu but great variety of flavors/textures on every dish, even the appetizers. For 6 people we ordered 4 appetizers & 5 entrees - more than enough food. We shared everything and they supported us nicely in doing all that. ONLY complaint was that it's noisy even when it's not crowded. We went on a Groupon but we'll be back for sure. Love the central Banker's Hill location but without Hillcrest's parking challenges. Not inexpensive but great value for the money. The only hard part was deciding what we liked best. Every dish was exceptional, nothing ordinary. (No, the bread was just OK but it worked great for sopping up the flavors and they refilled us 3x.) Mixed drinks looked interesting for next time...
