Diner Reviews
  • "My wife and I had dinner at Avanti's on Tuesday. It is truly a neighborhood gem. The restaurant has old school ambiance from outside to inside. Probably has not changed much in 30 years. We loved it. The food was traditional Italian prepared and served by people who care about what they are doing. We liked the place so much we went back on Wednesday. We are from Chicago where there are lots of top Italian restaurants and we have to admit we place Avanti's among our favorites."

  • "Veal piccata was very tough, could not even cut it. Dover sole over cooked & awful. Bone in veal chop was super thin, breaded & deep fried and very dry. Never heard of deep frying a veal chop. Was horrible. Home made pappardelle was soggy. Go for a drink in bar when piano is playing. The eggplant appetizer & calamari are good."

  • "Dinner was so good I went back for more. This time I had the cesar salad, I requested anchovies and it really excited my taste buds, the house chardonnay is palatable, I had 2 glasses. This time I skipped dessert; however I will return for happy hour. I think this is one of my new favorites."

  • "My companion and I had the fish special which was mahi mahi and cooked perfectly in a beurre blanc sauce with mixed vegetables. Desert was the tiramisu, it was fresh, moist and the best in town!"

  • "My wife and I had a perfect first time experience. Excellent ambiance excellent waiter and staff excellent food cooked to perfection excellent for special occasions . Veal parmigiana buttery soft perfect. Fish perfect appetizers eggplant and stuffed shrimp perfect. I grew up in Brooklyn ny in an Italian neighborhood worked in lower manhattan tasted the best lived in Staten Island with excellent italian. By far I rate them 10 out of ten. If you have read any negatives it's the person writing them not the restaurant causing them. $125 bill you definitely get what you pay for. You will find cheaper but not better .the service was impeccable and we couldn't stop eating the garlic bread & white wine. There is no better italian food in Arizona"

  • "Every time we go to Phoenix, Avanti is on our list of musts. It has special significance from my years living in Phoenix, and the classic and authentic Italian food, staff and service make me feel special each time. We took a large group of people this time, and the service was as efficient and friendly as if we were a party of two -- and every course we ordered (and there were many!) was beautifully prepared and served. It's even become the favorite restaurant of my Italian food-snobbish husband -- and it's probably good we don't live in Phoenix or we might become "large" frequent customers."

  • "Most enjoyable evening. Three couples meeting annually, all from out of town. Greeting, service and food presentation = outstanding. No one rushed us after coffee giving plenty of time to chat, catch up, and relax. Food temperature was perfect and taste quality exceptional. Superb wine list. Wait staff and owner(?) very attentive. Could have used a few minutes between salad and entree but the timing otherwise was fine. All and all a wonderful dining experience."

  • "Everyone in our group of four has lived in Phoenix for a long time, but none of us had ever dined here. It was a great discovery. It reminded us of some of the old time restaurants in the valley, like Durants, Stockyards, the old Beefeaters. This one has been updated a bit, but still has that old classic restaurant feel. We had arrived early to have a drink in the bar and that experience was a bit disappointing, but the dining room made up for it. All the dishes selected by our group were very good. The escargot was particularly outstanding. All in all, everyone was pleased with the experience and a bit surprised that the restaurant wasn't busier. We'll definitely add it to our rotation and return."

  • "Another excellent dinner. My wife had the sea bass and I enjoyed sautéed calamari. The calamari is usually served as an appetizer but I requested it as a full dinner and I was told "no problem." We both had the escargot and it was delicious. This was our second time here and the food and service is unmatched. The owner, always stops by to say hello and makes sure everything is to your liking."

  • "8 people - 8 very good or exceptional meals. Wine list was good but somewhat pricy. Waiter new his menu and wine list and was very attentive. A good red wine will be 66.00 or up. Decor is interesting if not strange but comfortable."

  • "This place is odd, which I knew in advance from reading reviews. We expected that. We also expected it to live up to its reputation as a decent restaurant. It did not. The place was overwhelmed by Valentine's Day. They accepted far more reservations than they could handle. They packed us in the back dining room on temporary tables and chairs. It was dead silent except for the uncomfortable whispers of the other couples. The staff was totally slammed, and unable to provide quality service. The food presentation was hurried and substandard. The bill, $136 for two entrees and four glasses of pinot noir, was far higher than the experience can justify. Numerous couples left shortly after arriving - we stayed only for the spectacle."

  • "Sorry, but I was disappointed with the lack of preparation on the part of Avanti for Valentine's Day. I have dined there 5 or 6 times and am not coming back. I was told the piano player would be there and he wasn't. The menu was limited indicating to me they were not prepared for a full booking. The service was slow, and the food was just ok. I know they can do better."

  • "Great restaurant with a great professional staff and amazing food. Always a great time. We visited on Valentines Day and although more crowded than normal, still had a great time with fantastic service. Always take out of town friends to this restaurant. Ambiance is normally five star but a little less this time due to the Valentines crowd, but still well worth the trip."

  • "The food was delicious! I had the stuffed pork chop special. It was by far the best chop Ive ever had. The staff was very accommodating and friendly. It was a very intimate setting, which was great because I proposed to my girl there. Everyone involved from the chef to the busboy made it a wonderful evening. Best of all she said yes!!! I would highly reccomend the food to a foodie, the atmosphere to a romantic, the wine to a connoisseur and the whole place to a visitor of Phoenix. Thank you Avanti for a night I will always remember!"

  • "Went here in 2013 and the food was delicious and the portions were huge so you were definitely taking food home. Went here in 2014 and all that has changed. Portions are now small and prices are huge. Basically not worth the money."

  • "We wanted a restaurant that had a romantic atmosphere and great Italian food, and Avanti did not disappoint. From the moment we were seated we were treated to a special evening. Our server, John, was attentive and helpful ... and a delight. For an appetizer we ordered the pasta sampler platter. The gnochi was melt-in-the-mouth good. John suggested we share a Caesar salad, which we did, and the size was perfect for two. For our entree we ordered the stuffed center-cut pork chops. It was one of the specials that evening and was wonderful."

  • "Went to Avanti's based on reviews on open table for 19th Anniversary dinner. The atmosphere is old world with a black and white motif. We were greeted promptly at the door. The waiter was warm, friendly and very knowledgeable. The food from the appetizer to desert was just fantastic!! The escargot was perfectly done and very hot (temp). My wife had the past a trio and I had the lasagna. The pasta is scratch made and incredibly light. Not heavy like a most Italian food. In fact, I think if I'd moved my hand off the lasagna it would have floated to the ceiling. It was 8 layers of meat and cheese and the pasta was as light as air. Desert was just as good. Definitely will visit again. GREAT GREAT night!!! Thank you."

  • "Quite frankly, was more than disappointed. The highlight was the Tiramisu. It was fantastic. Most of the dishes were over salted. I think it is a bit over priced as well. Went there expecting more."

  • "We had memorable dinners at Avanti in the 1980s. Phoenix grew, we moved to North Scottsdale and Avanti's seemed far away. We continued to see Avanti reminders in restaurant lists through the years. We decided to take the trek and treat ourselves to a special dinner at Avanti. The waiter who apparently worked at Avanti 20 years too long, continually bungled and was inconsiderate in our service. The food was very ordinary. I would not bother to drive 1/2 a block to visit this restaurant again. $235 for 3 people for dinner - save your energy and money and go to Macaroni Grill, it's quieter and nicer."

  • "After 40 plus years Angelo (owner) has perfected Lasagna. The flavors are well balanced and the pasta is light as a feather. It literally melts in your mouth. Best I have ever tasted (including trips to Italy) Go for the Lasagna you will not be disappointed. Ask for Mario (our waitor) he will take good care of you. The restaurant is an old style eatery reminiscent of early Phoenix. Great find."

  • "Our hotel recommended Avanti as a nearby Italian restaurant. The reviews on Urban Spoon weren't great, but we decided to go anyway. Much to our surprise, it had a cheap, but fun old Hollywood charm. Our waiter, Jon, was also the manager and he provided great wine and food recommendations while being chatty but not intrusive. The bread and escargot were nothing special, but our entrees were amazing. The pasta special included three different types of pasta, each with a different melt in your mouth sauce. The veal was outstanding as well and they happily accommodated a special request. While not the best restaurant in Phoenix, we would definitely go back next time we stay by the airport."

  • "Unique selections with pumkin flavors, LOVED the variety of meat choices since I choose ham over turkey, missed the shrimp cocktail; the chocolate cake was one of the best deserts due to the yummy icing! Our group would have liked a pecan pie choice. Service is always great and the setting is especially awesome in the main room, but got to experience the back side-room this time which was good for our group at this meal, but not my favorite. Keep that Caesar salad & your buffet is a success!"
