  • "The food at Avance is excellent and the presentation was beautiful! The new space is lovely and romantic."

  • "Has high aspirations which are not yet achieved. Some dishes were outstanding; others disappointing. Service ran from excellent to inconsistent and forgetful."

  • "Took us a few months to get a table but I now see why... Simply amazing! From the moment you walk in it is an experience. Service was on point, food was spectacular and the ambiance was captivating. I would suggest anyone who is looking for fine cuisine and great service to eat here. Avance is our new favorite little place!"

  • "I took the train from NYC to Philadelphia just to dine at Avance. Michelin-starred Chef Justin Bogle is at the top of his form, creating unique and mouthwatering morsels for his superb tasting menu. Each beautifully-plated course presented delectable variations in taste, texture, color and temperature. Other amenities include an excellent wait staff, striking service pieces and wooden tables that have a history. Bogle is a culinary genius.Book a table at Avance and run, do not walk to Philadelphia for an awesome alimentary adventure."

  • "We had a great dinner Saturday night at Avance. We showed up a little early, prepared to head to the bar, but we were offered the chance to be seated which we gladly took. We each had a cocktail we loved and decided to order the 5 course prix fixe to give us a nice overview of what this restaurant offered. We had some really fun amuse bouches (loved the pickled mussel) as well as each of the five courses. The duck was particularly outstanding. We got to chat with several of the servers through the dinner and they were friendly and helpful. A couple of times the service was a bit redundant (we got asked about our wine choice 3 times) but I will take that over neglect. The noise level was very reasonable. In total, we loved it."

  • "I strongly disagree with Craig LaBan's critique. Have dined at Avance six times so far - had both the a la carte and tasting menues - and each occasion was memorable, not least due to a wonderful waitstaff. The chef's menu is innovative and a great addition to the Philadelphia restaurant scene. Try it and see for yourselves."

  • "Avance is new on the scene and actually has been reviewed by yhr NY Times (favorably). You my choose between a la carte, 2 tasting menus, or a tasting menu designed for your tastes. We did the latter. It was excellent!! Service was wonderful (taking into account 2 good allergies), and we were not rushed through a quiet dinner. Definitely in our top 5 dining experiences."

  • "We sat at a table in the Bar area. The ambiance was very condusive to conversation with old friends. Drinks were amazing. Food service was above what would be expected . The Lamburger was absolutely delicious and we are already planning a trip back . The new crab dish and the duck were exceptional."

  • "Pretentious, over priced, and tragically sheik. The prices for food that did not work was bad enough, but $17 for a Keltle One Martini! The wine prices were also absurd."

  • "Chef Justin Bogle has hit a home run with Avance. The entrance is non-assuming and almost easy to miss, but everything else inside reflects the direction of the Philadelphia restaurant scene. Every aspect of the food was amazing, from the items we ordered to the amuse bouche. It is fine dining without the stuffiness of the old bank buildings. The layout of the floor and living walls help damper the sound to create an intimate atmosphere, allowing for conversation. The service was outstanding. Great job Justin. We certainly plan to go back."

  • "It was a little over the top for my wife and myself. We should have known that would be the case. Since it is in the old LeBec Fin location. The restaurant is very nice but very expensive. I would recommend for a special occasion."

  • "This may have been the best restaurant experience I have ever had. The food was amazing - I think Chef Bogle could probably prepare cardboard in a way that makes it tender and delicious. The service was so on-the-ball without being overbearing, and we truly felt so touched when the entire restaurant, including Chef Bogle, wrote and signed a card to us for our anniversary. The only thing that marred the experience was that a wedding party was in the upstairs area and at least one very noisy child was making quite a lot of noise. This is not a restaurant for children. Or at least, my experience improved 1000% after the child left. I wonder if the restaurant put an age restriction in place for dinner if that would help or hurt business."

  • "This is high end stuff. Takes time. Do not plan on attending an event after dinner. You will be late. Spend the time and the money. It is worth the investment."
    Dined on 3/15/2014
  • "Food is spectacular, but choices are very limited. They are not very accommodating to changes. This should be a 4 bell spot, but given the limited choices, I don't see how they can make it at these prices when choices are so few."

  • "First visit to Avance and will not be the last. Excellent service, great suggestions, duck presentation and taste were outstanding - highly recommend this restaurant! Definitely lived up to the great reviews I read in Open Table."

  • "The restaurant lived up to the hype. The five course tasting menus was outstanding with the bass and the beef course out of this world! Service was impeccable, well timed and the right amount of attention. Decor was dark, sleek, and modern. So why only 4 stars? Really too minor issues but they were disappointing: (1) wine price were off the charts EGREGIOUS. Cheapest reasonable bottle I could find was a $50 Paul Hobbs Pinot marked up to $165. The cab prices were even more. There was not a single decent can to be had for less than $275-300. I find a 3x mark up insulting to your customer who's already paying up to eat there. (2) Dessert. The chocolate had no flavor and the attempt at beet ice cream was a flop. Everything else was great."

  • "Our meal was fabulous, as was the overall experience. Our only issue was that we thought we were ordering the 5 course tasting menu, and when they asked if we were having the chef's tasting menu we said yes. We discovered at the end of the meal that the CHEF'S ttasting menu was not the 5 course meal but a 7 course meal, and cost about $50 more per person. It is essential to read the menu carefully. Nonetheless, the meal was wonderful."

  • "The only negative was the noise level which made it difficult to be romantic when we could not hear our conversation..... BUT otherwise it is a fabulous restaurant with a highly trained wait staff and beautifully described, presented and delicious food. The cocktails and wine list were superb. . Do not miss this restaurant experience!. Can not wait to go there again."

  • "From the amazing food to the outstanding, impeccable service, our experience at Avance was fantastic. Based upon many other reviews, we had high expectations - and they were all exceeded. Our meal was delicious, we enjoyed the extensive wine list and loved the atmosphere. Our servers could not have been better and the bartenders at the downstairs bar were delightful. This was a memorable meal and we can't wait to return."

  • "Every dish was like a beautiful painting on a plate and tasted as incredible as it looked. The duck was amazing! A must visit and I will definitely be back."

  • "Avance is a good replacement for LeBec Finn. The food was wonderful. The service very good without hovering. The only problem is the set up of the menu. It lists the ingredients and not the item. The server must explain what the dish is. An example is the desert menu. The item is listed as chocolate, persimmons, and some other ingredients. It was a wonderful chocolate cake layered with chocolate mousse. Anyone should be able to have a well prepared meal - it is luscious."

  • "Avance is a New York restaurant in Philly. As a former Philadelphia chef, I do not like to take away from Philadelphia restaurants/chefs by assuming that top New York restaurants will outperform Philadelphia restaurants, but its an underlying feeling that is slowly being remedied by experiences like Avance. All I can say is you are in good hands no matter who your server is (especially Kane), and no matter what you order, you are sure to be impressed. Ask for suggestions, as they are not going to steer you wrong. And if there is duck on the menu, in whatever form, make sure someone is ordering it!"

  • "A classy, special occasion venue with intricate, sophisticated food. Highlights include meltingly tender foie gras, fluffy cauliflower custard, the best striped bass of my life (thanks to the shaved black truffles), and a strong (albeit pricey) wine list. The decor is a bit severe for my taste. Service issues exist: my companion had a seafood allergy and was served scallops with her cauliflower custard. This could have killed someone with extreme sensitivity but luckily only gave her a rash. Pauses between courses were too long at times and retrieving my fur coat took longer than it should have, given it was the only one in the entire coat room. However, Avance is anxious to please and once the kinks are addressed, it will soar."

  • "Food and service were equally fab, only down side was the dessert which I could excuse as they just lost their pastry chef. Go for the cheese course instead which was wonderful. They redid over Le Bec Fin old site so well you will never compare the two . Tasting menu is for the whole table and as my husband will not eat fish and is picky we were unable to try it which I would have loved to do. Cauliflower appetizer was incredible and my dinner a delite. Will go back again once they have an opening as they are booked unless you go during the week. Enjoy."

  • "We had the chef's tasting menu - glorious selection of starters, mains and desert that left has happy and full. The foie gras, duck and brassica plates were stand out dishes for us."

  • "The old Le Bec Fin space has been re-designed in gray with colorful accents. The bar has great selections, a knowledgeable bartender, and a relaxed vibe. Only the sink in the bathroom has been changed from the great LBF sink to a much more pedestrian version. The food for the tasting menu is inventive, molecular, and presented beautifully, with lovely wine pairings. Service is top-notch. New York style, a more Philadelphia price."

  • "The most current, innovative, menu we've experienced in Philadelphia. Each dish was unique and delicious! Drinks at the bar were fabulous, creative with liquid nitrogen used to chill glasses, freeze mint etc. Personable bartender James kicked off our evening and then we moved upstairs. The decor is stunning,! (However, had a moment of nostalgia for our Le Bec Fin, a Philadelphia icon.) Service was impeccable and each person knowledgeable about every ingredient. The varied breads, baked on the premises accompanying each course were divine. Wine list excellent. This restauranteur knows his business and has true professionals. A special dining experience for the adventurous with flavors that blend perfectly and are gorgeously presented."

  • "We have been to many of the top restaurants in the city (he says pretentiously, sorry) and this was BY FAR the most amazing experience. Our server, Kane, guided us impeccably through our meal and service by him and the runners was incredible. There are lots of students running dishes and bread, etc. and they all know the menu items and all were very engaging. Also amazing was the transformation from Le Bec. The food is uniquely prepared and any a la carte selection is a hit. They also offer fine specialty cocktails and wines by the glass. After two appys and an entree we were a little full. Dessert was the only thing rated below outstanding. Avance is not for the faint of wallet but worth it! Can't say enough about how much we enjoyed it!"

  • "We had the 5 course testing menu. One of the Brest meals I've ever had. Make sure you have the Sea Bass! Excellent wine selection. Dessert was the weak spot. Still good but when compared to the rest of the meal it was not what we expected. All in all a very worthy replacement for Le Bec Fin. I can't wait to see what they do next!"

  • "He is by far one the most talented chefs in Philly at the moment. His food A+. The baker is also super talented with very interesting breads to try throughout the meal. Wait staff eventhough were trained well, were unfortunately not the top ones in Philly. It was a very slow night. If busy, they wouldn't have beenn able to handle. We will return for the tasting menu. It should be an interesting/creative one. Wish the chef much success!!!"

  • "It's a very nice restaurant. The food is top notch, where you'll get a lot of great things that they'll specialize in making their own. The flavors will be rich, and the food will be a bit different but damn will it be good. At times it feels like some of the food is fancy for the sake of fancy, but the ingredients inside will, and the chefs skill still make each course quite tasty. Just make sure you're ready to drop 250 on a meal for two since it will cost you that much to really enjoy it."
