Diner Reviews
  • "Avalon in West Chester was everything I hoped for and more. My husband and I enjoyed the fact that we weren't hurried; we took our time enjoying each course (we chose the 4 course option) and it was quiet and we were able to talk with the tables being far enough apart to have a private conversation. The food was excellent, our server was top notch! It is more costly than some places, but our experience was well worth the price that we paid. I would (and already have) recommend to friends!"

  • "One last chance to dine there before they move to new space. Menu continues to excel. Service always attentive and friendly. Cheese selections light but very good. Mussels dish continues to be best around. Most entrees perfectly built & presented. Salmon perfectly cooked with delicious veggie ragu. Lamb loin great with the brussel sprouts but fennel puree not helping the dish. Tasty desserts."

  • "We have enjoyed dining at Avalon for many years. We like the food selections and interesting presentation. We like that it is BYOB. The service is friendly but not intrusive. This was probably our last dinner at this location as they are moving to another spot in West Chester. The biggest problem for us has been the limited available parking in West Chester. We noticed driving by the other evening that the new place has valet parking."

  • "The food is always good at Limoncello and the wait-staff always pleasant and friendly. The bread and wine are also always delicious."

  • "We had never sat upstairs before -- nicer setting than the more active downstairs. I understand they are moving from the High Street location. This has always been a top destination for the food, and this last visit did not disappoint. The barramundi was exquisite. We will eventually be back at the new location when they have a full bar -- cannot wait to see the draft beer selection."

  • "We have been to dinner four times since they have redecorated and changed their menu.and each time had a delicous meal. They are a BYO and they have no cork charge. The owners are friendly and the staff is very accommodating."

  • "Liked the fix price European - 4 course smaller portions - but with no menu restriction."

  • "Food was great. Service was great. Value was great."

  • "Avalon delivers! A consistent foodie experience - 4 courses fixed price...The beet salad is not to be missed! The Lamb Bolognese took as back to Rome and the Salmon main course was amazing! Dont miss the banana bread pudding for dessert...and bring a great bottle of vino as its a BYOB!"

  • "On Friday night March 14, my husband and I dined with another couple and had a very enjoyable experience at Avalon in West Chester. They had the table we requested ready for us, the service was excellent, the food very good, and we all had A very nice evening. They will be moving to a new location soon. We will miss this cozy spot, but look forward to trying the new location in West Chester."

  • "Avalon used to be a great place for dinner - it was romantic, and zen in every way, with a beautiful fireplace, and an elegant and classy wait staff. Now, as you dine, you can watch the cooks in the kitchen, but it's nothing unique or unusual, and it's like sitting in a diner. So odd that a place formerly so elegant is now this. The food was FABULOUS and the service was very good, and attentive. The music coming over the sound was really bleak, I didn't recognize it as anything I had ever heard before in any genre. I guess the thing I miss the most is that Avalon really used to be a standout on the West Chester dining scene - so classy and elegant. Have to wonder WHY they changed a very good thing?"

  • "We have dined here several times and have never had a bad meal. The food is flavorful and creative, and the staff is always friendly and helpful. This visit, we tried the "Tour of the Menu" option for the first time -- four "smaller-portioned" courses for one fixed price. It was perfect! The only course that was noticeably smaller than usual was the entrée, but it was still ample and we definitely left with our bellies full. Great way to sample more of the menu and avoid the "appetizer or dessert" dilemma. Can't wait to go back!!!"

  • "The restaurant is on the loud side. The food was tasty, bit the portions were very small. We all left hungry. We were disappointed with the restaurant and won't be back."

  • "We were a party of 6 for dinner Friday evening. We were headed to the West Chester President's lecture series. The table was ready when we arrived, we got a great spot front and center. The service was attentive and the food was delicious! We made the lecture on time!"

  • "We suggested Avalon to our friends that were driving from the opposite direction, mainly because we have never been disappointed with our dining experience and it is a BYOB. The bottom line is that they could not stop raving and cannot wait to go back. Our tastes are quite different - my husband and I like to try different and unusual dishes, whereas they tend toward the more conventional. At Avalon there is something for everyone!"

  • "My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner. The food was excellent. We shared a mussels appetizer and we each got an entree that we shared. Salmon and Lamb. Both were VERY good. The best part is enjoying a bottle of wine without having to pay for individual wine glasses. Just a $2 cork fee so be prepared for that (which I think is ridiculous but apparently many BYOBs charge that?). The only other thing was we were seated upstairs and there were three sets of couples seated next to eachother. We ended up sitting in the middle and I was conscious of the couple on each side of us hearing our entire conversation. Would have preferred a quieter area. Luckily I enjoy meeting new people!"

  • "Food was delicious and menu was diverse but not overwhelming. Only complaint is the portions were very small - ravioli dinner portion was 3 raviolis ... Not really enough if you are hungry"

  • "This is where you want to be. Valentine's Day had a special menu and we tried different appetizers and entrees. The food was superb, especially the swordfish and the veal with lobster linguini, both of which paired nicely with a pinot noir. Desserts were varied and "just enough" to permit tasting several offerings on the serving board. Just another reason this has been our favorite restaurant for several years. Looking forward to our next dining out."

  • "It's BYOB and the prices are very reasonable so dinner at a quality restaurant will not break the bank. Casual ambience make it suitable for special occasions or a quiet Tuesday night dinner."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner very much and the staff was so friendly! From the moment we walked in they were so very attentive and nice. Our waiter was very helpful with making our selections and all his suggestions were delicious."

  • "The menu for Valentine's Day provided a good mix of options to suit every taste. The food was delicious. Our server was friendly and attentive, without being overbearing. Only negative is that the restaurant overbooked their reservations. We waited over 30 min to be seated when we had made a reservation. We were not alone in this situation. Poor planning. For such a reputable location they should not have such issues with planning for seating. Other than this, we had a lovely experience. I will definitely return."

  • "Portions very small, some sauces excellent, trying to be more than they are."

  • "It was an exceptional night out on Valentine’s Day. It started out with catching a parking space right in front of the restaurant and got better from there. Our reservation was for 6:30; we arrived at about 6:25 and were seated immediately. The service was excellent, we waited for nothing, and the food was even better. Avalon is one of the best restaurants in the area. Can’t wait to go back!"

  • "Maybe this restaurant is nice on other occassions, but it was freezing on Valentine's Day. I ate with my coat on my lap and even then i was too cold. There was one man that was very nice, he kept refilling out water glasses, but the hostess and our waitress were both projecting that it was a chore to deal with us, even though we were all smiles. It was a 4 course, and the second and third courses were good but the first plate was unappealing, and there was no other option so you were stuck with it. I'd say if you're going to cement a whole evening's worth of romance seekers into one appetizer option, you might want to steer clear of stacked sardines and tuna. All in all, i wouldn't go back there, it just wasn't a welcoming experience."

  • "Great service and atmosphere. Fireplace seating is beneficial during winter months. AMany great dished to choose from as well as fine cheese and meat selections for apps."

  • "I had heard many remarks about this restaurant over the years, no rave reviews, but nothing that should keep me away. The food was good. We started with a fresh home made mozzarella cheese board accompanied with a fresh made jam and an eggplant tapenade. Was good, could have been shared by a table of 4. We shared an arrugala salad - nice light dressing. My wife and I both had fish for our main entrée. I had a special of the day, fluke to be served with brussel sprouts, but they substituted green beans without a comment. Not what I would have liked. My wife had salmon. Both were prepared to our liking. Being a BYOB - The wines were great! My wife had the crepe for desert which she enjoyed. I would not go back Too many better choices !"

  • "Dined here on a Tuesday evening. Food was enjoyable...we did the "tour"...which for $49 each the portions were quite small. Service was ok, atmosphere was nice. Overall an alright meal. Probably won't be rushing back anytime soon. Would possibly recommend but there are many other local restaurants I would recommend before this one."

  • "The restaurant has a very small but imaginative menu. Food was good. It's very noisy. Those who like a creative menu and can take the noise will probably like it."

  • "This was our 3rd time and it was the best experience yet. Our waiter was just great. When he wasn't there someone else attended to us. I personally have gluten free and they accomodated me with pleasure. I had the Bolonaise and it was great. The fish was also very good. We were a little disapointed with a $19.00 app, needed a little more cheese and meat on the antipasti. Other than that we certainly will be back!!"

  • "Good food. Not an exorbitant number of choices. Excellent service. Seated immediately. On this cold, cold night would have appreciated a better parking situation. Could hear my husband talking without difficulty. I would return. I always love BYOB restaurants."

  • "The six people at our table did a four course "tour" of the menu which included a starter, salad or pasta, entree, and dessert. The portions were small, but by the time dessert was finished I was FULL. On the waiters recommendation I had had the smashed potatoes with shaved truffles and it was DELICIOUS. Everyone in our group enjoyed every course and the staff were friendly and attentive."

  • "This was the 2nd time at Avalon and loved it again. The first time was in the summer and ate in their outdoor area which is just so beautiful and full of ambiance. This time we ate indoors because of the winter weather but it has its own charm with the fireplace blazing. The food is good to very good. Definitely a favorite place of ours in West Chester"

  • "Only the second time here. Was spoiled by the first time perhaps, but for some reason was less impressed this time around. Service and atmosphere was fine, and the food was quite good. But not sure if it was worth the $50 for the tour, which did have very small portions. Came away satiated, but felt something was missing. Cannot define what it was. Will come back, but probably pass on the tour. Still one of the best BYOBs around, but pricey for the product."

  • "Owner-chef John continuing to bring high levels of service and food preparation to the table. Mussels still best around. Great cheese and salami selections to start the evening with. Veal cheek special excellent although the sides for it so-so. Skate looked very good. Bolognese still incredible. Went for a business dinner with colleagues from across the country and Avalon did not disappoint. Thanks again."
