Diner Reviews
  • "Ate outdoors on a lovely Summer Thursday in West Chester, when Gay Street was blocked to traffic and we could watch the passing parade. Very cool, especially with an excellent Margarita! Everything was delicious: grilled calamari, lamb pappardelle bolognese, and veal with shrimp. Julia's service was great. Could hear enough of the "Great American Song Book" music, even with the bustle on the street, to enjoy it. Nice evening."

  • "Walked through the door stood in front of the hostesses for a good 5 minutes before they raised their heads and greeted me. We proceeded to wait 30 minutes for our 8:00 reservation and then were seated at a table between the bar and wine room. They did move us at our request to the dining room. Our server was excellent as was the food and atmosphere, both of which saved the evening."

  • "Very fine meal in Avalon's location on Gay Street. We ate outdoors late on a lovely evening and had a delightful experience, with great service and food, just as in the much-missed space on S. High St. Nothing will ever beat that patio, but the street seating was quite nice."

  • "Alas, one of the last times for this gem, before it moves. Hope that the new digs provide as much enjoyment as Avalon has over the past 10 years or so."

  • "We were regular patrons of the sister establishment in Downingtown, and the menu here is similar. The flat breads are a great way to start, crispy with the right mix of sauce and cheese. The meatballs are a favorite of ours and we regularly choose pasta. Last night did not disappoint. My ravioli in a light cream sauce was perfectly prepared and my wife's papparadelle with lamb ragout was wonderful. The only disappointment was the Chianti -- very little character. The wine list is pretty limited -- doesn't even give vintages -- and perhaps more care could be taken with selection. In future, I will inquire about a corkage and bring my own if possible. Noise levels are on the high side, but we will be back."

  • "Obviously, the move from high street has not gone well Service was bad not at all what we had come to expect from our experience at the high street location"

  • "We miss the 'courtyard' at their old location on, but the food continues to be top quality and the service good."

  • "How I miss the old Avalon! we ordered a glass of wine at $9 each and got a meager pour-no more than 4 ounces each. When we complained to the manager, she did say it was a "short pour". She did say their normal pour was 5.5 ounces. We sent the wine back and ordered a bottle for $33. When we asked what sauce was on a pasta, our waitress said red; it was a brown sauce-so she was not informed as to the sauces on the product. Noise level is deafening. Very loud! The wine, though, was the deal breaker for us. I don't think we will return soon. And I would not recommend the restaurant to anyone soon. So sad, since the old Avalon was a gem!"

  • "Food & service were excellent!!! However the noise level was horrible. There was just the 2 of us & we had such a hard tome hearing. Had there been more of us at our table there would be no way we could hear anyone else in our party. Our poor waitress had to be hoarse from all the yelling she had to do."

  • "This restaurant had delicious food! The bar was very friendly and we were seated at our reservation time."

  • "From beginning to end, a great dining experience. Service, ambiance and food all top notch."

  • "Our experience at Avalon at it's new location was good although not noteworthy. The food was very good but the portions were small compared to similar restaurants in West Chester. Our server was very good, but the wait for the food was longer than it should be especially for the salads. We saw people who came in after us getting their entrees while we were still waiting for the salads. Noise level was very high as the restaurant filled up. I do like the BYOB option on some days of the week."

  • "We had a wonderful Father's Day dining experience which included delicious cuisine from appetizers to dessert. The decor is lovely, seating is comfortable and our server Sean was knowledgeable, attentive and friendly. We would definitely return and would recommend Avalon to others."

  • "We have been eating at Avalon for years and have always been happy with the experience. So happy they moved to a part of West Chester where parking is easier to find."

  • "The new location is great. It's always a 5 star experience at Avalon."

  • "We sat outside and had a nice evening. My only complaint about the food was that the braseola was to thick/tough to eat nicely. Everything else was delicious. Our waitress was very nice, as was the busser. The table wobbled a lot as they walked to and from the table, but I can chalk that up to the character of dining on the sidewalk. Would definitely return"

  • "Location was great, staff were friendly and accomodating. Feed was good, we had the fried calamari and flatbread appetizers - which were awesome. Main entre was tasy, but nothing seemed to jump out at me off the menu screaming...you gotta have this or try that."
    Dined on 6/6/2014
  • "Bread was stale. Noisy. Owner cleared our plates without asking how meal was. Hostess rude. Waiter wearing an Avalon shirt w obnoxious sayings on it. Food not that good for the prices. "

  • "Consistently superb! The new location only adds to the opportunities to enjoy this restaurant. The seasonal menu offers great choices in addition to the more familiar tour of the menu. Remains our favorite in the western suburbs ( and even better than most downtown Philadelphia restaurants)."

  • "We have pretty high standards, we cook at home daily, and to drop $100 on dinner out, it needs to be worth it. We love Avalon. Julia is a gem. Highly recommend the tour option, the meatballs melt in your mouth, and I hate to admit it, but their chicken piccata is even better than mine! The portions are small, but the quality is excellent. I would rather try four small plates than be faced with a giant bowl of pasta! Parking in West Chester is a bit of a pain, the meters do take debit cards, now, but Avalon is worth it. It has become our go-to. Sum, Mon and Tues are still BYOB, they also have happy hours and live music. Check out their website. "

  • "Service was great - food so-so (some items fantastic, some not so good). Band too loud."

  • "Great new menu. Three of us shared 4 different appetizers; baked clams, burrata cheese, something on a board with eggplant, and meatballs and we'd order all of them again. Meatballs - try the meatballs. Hubby had the chard fish special and said it was excellant. We stopped going to the other location on High St because of the following; many times you'd wait over an hour, even with a reservation, poor service and an inconsistent menu so, I was surprised to hear that the same chef was here. If they can keep it going the way it's working now, it will be another restaurant we'll add to our list of places to dine on Gay St. Who knows, maybe the next review I write, I will select "neighborhood gem"."

  • "We loved this restaurant when it was a BYOB. Now it is a full bar restaurant in a new location. Same great quality food. We did not sit inside, so I can't speak to the new decor. The service was a little bit more slow than what we are used to at this restaurant, but by no means poor. Can't wait to go back again!"

  • "Always a delight to see the crew at Avalon! It's a dining experience for start to finish and tonight ended with dessert in a martini glass....chocolate, Carmel, almond shavings w a cappuccino. Having the full bar is a nice treat....miss the Byob but like having the options that come with the full bar, from the Cosmo to some hop devil and maybe some house merlot. This is going to be a favorite stop..."

  • "We've been huge fans of Avalon for several years and always considered a meal there to be a special treat. After our first trip to the new location, not so much. The service was, as always, top-notch. The food was fine but not "OMG the best thing I've ever eaten" like in the past. The facility itself is larger but seriously lacks the charm of the old spot, and the noise level was almost intolerable. (A crying baby at the next table didn't help!) The High St. location had one of the best outdoor dining areas in town which was definitely missed on a warm spring night. (Who wants to sit out on Gay Street breathing car exhaust while you're eating?) Overall it was fine but probably won't be rushing back. "

  • "Avalon needs a lot of work. We have been there twice and everything is just ok. Even the bread is not up to their old standards on High street. The wine list lacks as well. "

  • "This was my first time dining at Avalon since it moved from it's original location. While I would prefer the original BYOB, the bar was efficient as was their staff. Good food, nice attention and I will definitely return for future meals. "

  • "Avalon continues to secure its spot in my mind as the best restaurant in West Chester. The food, atmosphere, service and wine were all wonderful. "

  • "Transition from the long-time High Street location to Gay Street is going well. One service glitch, due to some mis-communication, was rectified. Food as outstanding as ever. Even got on-street parking this time! "

  • "We have been fans of Avalon for a long time, but the move to the new location has hurt the overall appeal of the restaurant. The noise level was so high that it was a relief to the ears to walk outside after dinner. The food was slow in coming, and while it was still tasty it was not of the same quality as we had been used to in the old location. I expect that Chef John will get things back to his standards, but it will be a while before we visit Avalon again."

  • "never understand why bands have to be so loud that you're either forced to give up and just sit there, or shout over it. "What? WHAT?!" The male lead singer was good, the female was at times painful. Shhh... it's not a concert, it's dinner (or a drink) and conversation. "

  • "We originally had a group of 6 for 5:45 for Saturday evening, and changed it to a group of 8 about 24 hours ahead of the reservation. Avalon was easily able to accommodate us. We arrived a bit late and informed the waitress that we needed to finish by 7:15 in order to arrive on time for a show about 20 minutes from the restaurant. They handled it all very smoothly. Our drinks and food arrived promptly, and our dishes were hot and delicious. Paying the bill was also done smoothly, and they did not seem rushed at all. In fact, they were disappointed we could not stay longer, as we also expressed that wish. I would recommend Avalon and their great Italian menu to anyone looking for good food, at a good price, with great service. "

  • "Limited menu, service was spotty. At first 3 different people came to the table to ask about water. Then we waited quite awhile to place our order, but after that the server was quite attentive. Food was very good but the noise level was pretty loud by the time we left. We were glad to have gotten there early before the place filled up. "

  • "We liked the new decor, modern and bright. Always used to order the Lamb Bolonaise, this time hardly any lamb in the sauce!! It is a bummer that it is no longer a full BYOB. Only on Sun. Mon. and Tues. We had six people at a long table and it was impossible to hear the couple on th end. Much noiser than their former restaurant. Overall we would try it again, but not with 6 people."

  • "Great food, great service, great location. This place is the perfect spot for a nice relaxing dinner and a nice glass of wine. Whether your dining inside or out you'll enjoy your experience. I recommend the European tour which is their four course tasting option."

  • "Excellent food. Pleasant and knowledgable wait staff. A little on the noisy side where we sat. ? Rugs and a little more space between tables would easily solve this. Will definitely plan on returning."

  • "A fan of Avalons for many years, we booked a table for Mothers Day at their new location on Gay Street. We took our children ages 8 and 16 and found the menu accomodating to them. We had a table outside and enjoyed the outside scenes on a nice day. The service was very slow though. Not sure how many tables our waitress had and though she was well versed in the menu and sweet, 2 hours for brunch seemed a little long. Luckily we were outside and were relaxed so it was ok. Try Avalons out! "

  • "The menu was limited. Food was good but not great, especially for the price point. Waitress was very nice but the service was quite slow. Liked the old venue so much better. "
