A word from Avalon Bistro - Downingtown
Avalon Bistro is a festive neighborhood-oriented BYOB in Downingtown (suburban Philadelphia) serving tapas style rustic Italian cuisine. Our price fix menu is served in small portions family style, promoting social interaction while giving everyone the opportunity to try many foods. Each person orders 1 main dish and any other 2 items (flatbreads, salads, soups, small plates) they choose. Each person receives 3 shareable small plates. Most portions are 6-8 bites. We also offer an extensive cheese program.
Chef John Brandt-Lee's sister restaurant, Avalon West Chester, has received many accolades, including Main Line Today's "Best BYOB" and New York Magazine's list of "101 of America's Most Delicious Noodle Dishes." In continuing this tradition, Avalon Pasta Bistro's menu include dishes, such as Crab & Lobster Ravioli in a Saffron Tomato Mussel Jus; Veal Cheek Ragu; and Ricotta Gnocchi with Apricot Ver Jus Sauce.

  • "Our group of 10 had a wonderful experience at Avalon Bistro. We all agreed to order the Chef's Tour which is a set price for 2 small plates, a main course and dessert for each person. Between us, we ordered a variety of the small plates, salad, main entrees and desserts that we were able to share with our table mates such that many of us were able to try new things. Each item that we ordered was tasty and prepared well. Our server, Charlie, took wonderful care of us. The private room and square table enabled us to be as noisy as we needed to be to talk to each other or just laugh without disturbing others. The fact that the restaurant is a BYOB was perfect for us after a day of local wine touring. We will definitely return to Avalon Bistro."

  • "Enjoyed the whole experience. Room is small but we never felt uncomfortable and it wasn't noisy. Waitress was okay, not overly friendly but did a decent job attending to us. The food was very good and the complimentary beer and/or sangria was a nice touch. We did the chef's tour and it was just enough food and not overpriced. Next time we go we'll try the outside patio."

  • "It was pouring rain on a late Saturday night and the restaurant was full. Our first time here and it was fabulous. We shared the baby meatballs (10) appetizer. Absoutely delicious! Main dishes of boneless beef short ribs with polenta and slow cooked chicken marsala with Kennett Square mushroom and new potatoes were equally delicious. This is a BYOB but we didn't bring wine. However, they gave us complimentary small glasses of sangria. The mascarpone crepe with raspberries dessert was the perfect end to a wonderful meal. The service was excellent -- attentive without being pushy. The noise level was a bit high because we were seated near a table of 4 with one woman having an exceptionally loud voice. It quieted down once she started eating."

Our server was attentive and provided good insights to the menu. Food was good. Worth a return visit in my estimation. Outside dining once the weather clears may make for an enjoyable evening."

  • "We literally just happened upon Avalon Bistro when we were on our way somewhere else one night. Boy, are we glad we decided to stop there, because now it's our new favorites spot! It's a small place, but it feels really earthy and intimate. The food is fresh and well thought out. It is true farm to table dining, as the chef works with local growers/farmers daily, and develops his menu based on those seasonal items. The Small Plates and Cheese Boards are also amazingly inspired. And since Avalon is a BYOB, you can always have the perfect bottle of wine in hand to go with your dinner. Highly recommend!"

  • "Dinner was delightful, cozy and delicious. I love a BYOB where they can concentrate on the quality of the food. Everything we ate was "top of the line", not overpriced and more than adequate portion sizes. The room is "intimate" but you aren't sitting so close that you were involved in your neighbor's conversation. Service was attentive and "just right". I would highly recommend."

  • "First I checked out the menu to see if they had any gluten free items, since I am gluten intolerant. Not only did they have several items, but they had them marked as gf. That was so good to see, because that showed me that they were aware of the gf sensitivity The waiter at the restaurant, was also sensitive (and reassuring) to my needs. The food was delicious and the atmosphere, quaint. I love that it's an "intimate,"close to home, BYOB. Will definitely go again!"

  • "We have gone to Avalon several times, and although we enjoy the food and like to support local restaurants, the last two times we actually left still feeling hungry. Don't get me wrong, the food is tasty and inventive, and even with the chef's tour, which seems like it would be a lot of food, it's not. My husband and I aren't big people, and we don't like "over-sized" portions (a la Cheese Cake Factory), but we do expect "right-sized" portions for the price tag that Avalon charges. For that, we give it an average rating and probably will not go back again."

  • "Did not disappoint. Food is well-prepared, and they do a fantastic job of combining flavors and ingredients to come up with some unique dishes with distinct flavors. Did the chef's tour. Appetizers. Baby meatballs in San Marzano sauce were out of this world. I used the bread to soak up any leftover sauce. Mozzarella with roasted celery root and blood orange jam had nice flavoring. Nice salads with nuts, or apple or pear. My wife enjoyed the butternut squash ravioli with a nice tasty sage butter. I had a the crabcake with carmelized onions and garlic and lemon...the way they combine ingredients together just makes their dishes pop. And the complimentary Victory beer and Sangria is a nice touch. Desserts were quite good as well."

We were all in a similar boat, having gone several days without power and heat, due to the recent (one of many this season) winter storm. We did the menu where you select two starters, a main and dessert. It was great. Had the always incredible lamb bolognese and my wife had their twist on chicken marsala - with dark meat, on the bone. All was fabulous. We keep returning again and again."

We were all impressed by the flavors of our various courses (on the chef's tasting menu) and how it was the perfect amount of food.   • "Last minute decision to go out, after a rough day. Have been here many times and are big fans. Normally it is packed and pretty loud, but service is always great and the food is excellent! We went several nights ago. It was cold and rainy and we were only one of two couples in the place. We had a wonderful mixed appetizer for two, my wife had the lamb bolognese (one of our favorites here) and I had the pumpkin raviolis with a sage butter sauce - excellent! We were there at 6:30 and when we left they locked the door. Got the impression they would have preferred to lock up and leave earlier. That notwithstanding, it was probably our most pleasant night there because it was quiet and we could have a normal conversation."

We live in the general area and have driven past on numerous occasions, normally eating out in West Chester or Center City. We finanlly decided to give Avalon Bistro a try this past Saturday evening and were really glad that we did. The food, services and atmposhpere were all excellent. The place is on the smaller side and has a good relaxed, but up-scale vibe. The appetizers and our main dinner entrees were truely delicious, whith good portion sizes. This was just what we were looking for and we will be going back again soon."

We had a great room upstairs that had a large square table so it was great. The BYOB always helps to keep the bill down which we all appreciate. We love the selections of small food plates and the entrees. Everything was great and the service was lovely. We are coming back this week with a few additional people"

  • "Small area to dine, like 5 table restaurant with another area for one big table. BYOB so dont forget the wine! Service is like what youd expect at a kids restaurant just ok. The food on the other hand and ambience is outstanding, I got the shortribs. The cheese tray was excellent. My husband got the chicken cacciatore and said it was delicious but he thought leaving the bones still on the plate made it seem like a cheaply put together dish I like cheese and never tasted cheese so good! Like i said food was delicious. All a la carte too. for two we spent 70 bucks and got one appetizer, 2 entrees no salad or dessert."

  • "This has become our favorite for many reasons, and our latest experience was no exception to a string of wonderful dinners at Avalon. The staff is warm and attentive, and the menu is constantly being updated with a small number of updates which makes the experience just a little bit new each time. We had the Antipasti for two, full of fresh and tasty morsels to share. We both tried the Tuscani salad this time and were impressed with the flavor combinations. I went with my favorite mussels in white wine sauce, which was awesome as usual, and the baby meatballs, too. We've had the menu tour many times which should be experienced, but for a lighter set of course, stuck to our a la carte choices. We will be returning again and again!"

  • "I've been wanting to try this restaurant for a while. Finally have the opportunity Friday night to go there with friends. The food was all very good if not a little pricey. It started with a complimentary glass of beer or wine which was a nice touch. Our server was attentive. I will say that the cheese boards are a bit overpriced for the quantity. However the portion sizes for the entrées were generous and everyone was very happy with their food"

  • "This is our third time at this restaurant and it is consistently excellent. It is a BYO with plenty of great choices on the menu if you want to get ala carte. However we, once again, went with the tasting menu. It is 2 appetizers for each, we picked meatballs, a rigotta and mozzarella tomato burrata, hummus with eggplant, and an arugula and white bean salad. All were great, I liked the mozzarella and meatballs the best. For main course we had the Papadelle with lamb Bolognese and the Short Ribs, both terrific. Two desserts was a chocolate mousse-like dessert and some sort of pastry with fruit, very tasty. All great but too much food. Service was attentive and serving a free glass of sangria or Victory (local) beer is a nice touch."
