Diner Reviews
  • "My wife an I went to Autre Mond on a Thursday night for our anniversary. We were surprised that it wasn't very busy that night, and that the decor was nondescript. We were further surprised by the food - how good it was. I wasn't prepared for the best steak I've ever had. No undeserved superlatives here. I've maybe had one or two steaks this good in my life. My wife and I shared a couple of small plates and the rib eye with creamed spinach. Both were excellent. We recommended they make the rib eye a permanent menu item. The proprietor said he agreed. One thing to watch for if you go. There is no beer on the menu. I asked about it, being a huge beer nerd. They have a good, if small selection of beers. Don't be afraid to ask."

  • "The food and service were outstanding, however the restaurant was SO loud we couldn't converse. We did, however, move to the patio where we thoroughly enjoyed the rest of out meal. Each food item that was brought was scrumptious and Liz, our server, was helpful and gracious. "

  • "We enjoyed our dinner very much. The brisket was an Asian preparation, the tastiest brisket ever. Very dry, complex Bulgerian red wine. Who knew? The seafood soup was bountiful with a little zip; the gnocchi inventively prepared; and the trout always worth ordering. We will be back even though the noise level can be challenging. Ask for a quiet table if you want to hear well with a part of four or more. Great service from many especially Allison. One of the best spots in the near western suburbs."

  • "We've always enjoyed the food at Autre Monde but realized we always set in a corner table by the window. This time, we were put against the wall by the bench seats and didn't last more than 10 minutes. The bench seats sit low and you feel like the people across are towering over you. But this wasn't the worse. It was the noise. We truly could not hear our table mates without leaning in close and talking loudly. Looking around, we saw that the people at the tables further into the restaurant weren't talking at all. It was just too difficult to be heard. All the noise was coming from the few corner tables and it spread throughout the restaurant. It was so bad that we had no choice but to leave and head elsewhere. "

  • "We enjoyed both the lamb hash and the chicken and pancake plates. The lamb hash in particular is worth coming back for. The chicken and pancake dish was on the small side. There were only two small chicken wings and two pancakes."

  • "We've eaten here several times now, and it's good but not great. The food can be inventive and usually well done. Service is a bit spotty. Prices are high enough that we expect better. When full, it's really noisy. In all, an OK place but not one I'd recommend unreservedly."

  • "After trying many new restaurants, Autre Monde delivered - finally good food! Our group shared many plates and all were enjoyed. We started with the smoked mozzarella cheese flatbread, actually it was SO good, we ordered two! The trout was delicious - light and flaky, no fishy after taste - I absolutely did not want to share this dish. From chicken to gnocchi, up until the last two desserts: vanilla gelato and cinnamon cake, everything was good and the service was excellent. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. This place is definitely a gem - it is not pretentious as one might expect a restaurant with great food to be. We traveled from the south suburbs to try Autre Monde, and I would definitely return for the food."

  • "We loved our meal, but apparently if you don't make a special request in the reservation, they will seat you at a high top table communal dining style. The majority of the restaurant was regular tables. Wish we would have known, although the hightop was not too uncomfortable. Although sitting with another couple kind of made our special night unromantic."

  • "The food was spectacular! It is the 2nd time I have been to the restaurant & I enjoyed everything I had. The home made hummus & pitas were outstanding. Every dish we had was excellent. I'm looking forward to going back."

  • "We celebrated my 45th birthday there. The food was everything as promised. The waitstaff was knowledgeable, courteous and efficient. The short ribs were amazing! They were so tender and flavorful I would go there once a week just to eat them. The presentation of the trout served a hole for the price was unheard of. The chef came and greeted us at our table, he was very passionate about his food. We will recommend to other people passing through the area and be back ourselves."

  • "The room was crowded and very noisy. Ordered the Lyonnais salad and mussels to start. First out was the salad and ten minutes later the mussels. I was told this is how they do it in Europe ala minute. Really. So we could share. There was barely enough salad for one person. The lardons were over cooked and thin, and the vinaigrette was bland. The mussels were a small portion for the price. The entrées were OK but the wine list was a disappointment. Over priced for average bottles. This place may be big time for Berwyn, but there are better places to dine"

  • "The food was delicious. I had the special french toast bread pudding with candied walnuts, whipped cream and syrup and my husband had the olive oil fried eggs with serrano ham and arugala. Both were great and we can't wait to go there again."

  • "The first time my daughter and I went here we were blown away. Food, drinks, service, ambiance was superb. This time...not so much. Portions were smaller. Seriously cold (yes, I know it has been a rough winter...but they need to work it out for patrons to dine comfortably). Ambiance & service still were good overall, but it is no longer worth the price. We will not be back."

  • "We were in Berwyn to visit Fitzgerald's for jazz and needed a bite beforehand. We were blown away by our dining experience at Autre Monde! The service was great -- our waitress was very knowledgable about all of the dishes and guided us thru all of the small plates. My wife and I shared an appetizer, salad, pasta, lamb chops, and dessert; everything was fresh and great -- especially the lamb chops on the wood fired grill. The wine list is adventurous, with selections from Spain, Italy, Greece, and even Slovenia. We had a great time and will be back."

  • "This restaurant had an interesting menu and many good reviews, so when the Groupon for Brunch became available I took a chance and invited close friends to try it. Very Pleased with the food and the service and we are looking forward to making dinner reservations in the near future. I recommend highly."

  • "I'm close friends with the owners & have to say I love how they regularly switch up the menu as well as the wine list. The food is ALWAYS great. The wines are ALWAYS great. I enjoyed the charcuterie platter & rest of our meal which was a bunch of appetizers that I shared with my 2 guests. The rest of the menu looked delicious as well had we been ordering individual dishes. I'll be back soon!!"

  • "... made for quite a long wait, despite my Open Table reservations. I've never been here before, so when I requested a 'table by the window,' I didn't know window tables were only for larger parties. Upon arrival, the hostess asked, "didn't you get my message about your request?" I checked my phone and email for a message, but found none. I was told that because my requested table wasn't available, we would have to wait for a table to clear. I didn't mind waiting at the bar, but my visiting friend doesn't drink, so sitting there for well over a half hour was not enjoyable for her. The food, however, was incredible: we both had the rainbow trout in citrus beurre blanc, and I would have loved to take another order home with me!"

  • "We arrived at 5:00 when they first opened and were able to enjoy some conversation before the restaurant became crowded and noisy. Our server was both knowledgeable and nice. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the billing. A deep fried ham and cheese special was just average as were the two flat breads and two of the three meat skewers ordered. The duck skewer was terrible. Several other dishes were sampled with only average results. On the up side, the hazelnut pot de crème was world class! All four of our party agreed that it was fun to try a new place but we have no interest in returning."

  • "My girlfriends and I enjoyed a weeknight dinner on one of the many snowy nights we have had. We enjoyed a flat bread pizza with fontina and wild mushrooms,an onion tart with herb salad, vegetables la plancha, and a daily special that included mussels, saffron rice and house made chorizo. One dish was more fabulous that the next. The food had earthy, complex flavors, especially the vegetables roasted and caramelized in a fabulous sauce. When I first saw the special dish I was a little put off-I thought the sausage would be ground rather than large links--I am not a big sausage fan. The sausage was amazing. Nicely spicy hot, and flavorful, lean but moist. Yum! This was the best meal I have had in a long time."

  • "I've been here a few times - it is a very special place. All of the food is excellent and service was impeccable. It is cozy, but elegant. This particular time it was noisier than I recall in the past, which made conversation a little difficult with a large group, but I will definitely be going back."

  • "I have tried to get into this restaurant for dinner but they have been too busy & I didn't want to eat at 5PM or 8:30PM. So my family & I had brunch here last Sunday. It was a busy place with tables very close to others. Similar to many hot restaurants in Chicago. The food was OK. I wouldn't do brunch again but I'd like to try their dinner menu."

  • "Have been three times. The first was a Saturday night at 8:00 pm - super noisy. The next was a Sunday evening, quiet, intimate, very pleasant, the third was a Saturday at 6:00 pm - was enjoyable and quiet until 7:30, then got incredibly loud, right about as we were finishing up. So if you are looking for quiet enough to hear what the person you are with has to say, don't go on a Saturday night after 7:30 - otherwise you are probably okay The food was fantastic: tasteful, creative, adventurous generous small dishes to share. Service was excellent, thoughtful, and attentive, though it slowed down quite a bit after it got super busy after 7:30 on Saturday night. Highly recommend."

  • "There are many delicious dishes both for the adventuresome and those who want something more standard. Everything was delicious from the vegetable small plate to the short ribs. The goat cheese pasta was incredible. Pastas and gelatos are made daily on site - Yummy!! Can't wait to go try more incredible food."

  • "Really amazing food (I did not put one bad thing in my mouth all night), great wine, and excellent service. I would definitely recommend and will certainly go back with friends! Only complaints (mind you, the food was good enough to make these minimal) are that the room is loud, making it difficult to hold a conversation and the seats at out table weren't very comfortable, making it less welcoming for folks who like to linger over a glass of wine or coffee after a meal, but maybe that's deliberate. Either way, it wouldn't stop me from going back again! Nom nom nom! ;)"

  • "When we arrived it was so very crowded and noisy, I was a bit worried that it would not be a good evening. After awhile, we had a drink and since we had a wait, the manager brought out a mushroom flatbread, on the house, for our patience! It was really very good! The service was very good, attentive without being annoying. The noise level was high, but, I like that for the most part. As long as I am not on a romantic date night! I highly recommend Autre Monde and I will certainly be back!"

  • "We had a Friday 8pm reservation, still had to wait a half hour for us to be seated. Can't control linerging patrons, but the wait was rather longer than expected. The place was jammed, very busy. Food was phenomenal, really a gem in Berwyn; the best food in town without a doubt. Reasonable beer list even for a wine bar; wine is pricey beer is half that price. Service was excellent. Desert was liquid chocolate w hazelnuts. Amazing stuff! Our friends could not believe how good the food was. This was our 3-4 time there. Its not cheap, but it sure is good."

  • "I recommend conditionally. If you're looking for an outstanding family style dining experience this is the place to go. The food selections are not cliche Mediterranean style dishes but unique dishes that you do not find that often. Everything was flavorful and a joy to eat. BUT... The amibience is horrible, primarily because it is so noisy that you can barely hear yourself think, let alone enjoy a nice conversation with your dinner mates. If you're looking for a romantic evening out, this is not the place. I took my fiance here for a valentines dinner, and regretted doing so. It could be a fun place for a group so long as they go with the expectation that they are not going to be able to engage in meaningful conversation."

  • "We were disappointed in our visit. The hostess and waitress were both extremely friendly. However, other than the salted cod fritters, the remainder of our dishes were misses. We tried one of the nightly specials, the head on prawns. They were seasoned nicely, but were over cooked and a bit dry. Next was the wood fired octopus. Again, they were over cooked and over dressed in a spicy oil. We tried the small plate lamb dish next. This was flavorful, but dry. Overall, the atmosphere was extremely loud and spacing was tight. Perhaps due to what seemed like a drunken twelve top behind us. A newer member of staff (I hope) tried to deliver someone else's dishes to us twice along with a to-go bag before we even ordered."

  • "We have been to AM a half dozen times and the food is consistently terrific. Small plates menu and some entrees if you prefer to not share. We share everything. Chef makes inventive use of ingredients in every dish on the menu. The menu changes, but they always have some excellent flatbreads with different toppings (think crispy thin crust pizza). Interesting wine list with some nice surprises if you get some help from owner. Some will find it an "energetic" noise level, but it gets hard to hear staff and soft spoken dinner companions when the place is full. One of our favorite places for the unique food treatment and quality."

  • "This was our second time there - first was with a group of six and on a weeknight, so much less busy and quieter. Second time, ust four of us, but on Valentine's Day, so quite crowded and vibrantly loud. Food both times was fabulous. Interesting and wonderfully prepared dishes without being too "foodie-ish". A hit both times was the octopus. The wine list is extensive (but for us, not wine experts, a bit expensive). The chocolate pot du creme for dessert was heavenly. Service and waitstaff were classy, non-intrusive, and knowledgable. A definite repeater for us."

  • "We went for a lovely meal, and the food is very good. That is not the problem! The table is bare, and the busboy told us to hold on to our dirty forks and knives after the appetizers. A new plate didn't come for several minutes, and we had to hold the saucy dirty silver until some place to put them was delivered. The entrees came at four very different times, even though we wanted the entire entree for each person. A simple question by the waitress would have solved that problem. Three of us were completely done with our meal by the time the fourth entree came after 20 minutes. The waitress was fairly bored by her job, and certainly not helpful. For a fine dining price, we got a less than diner experience and were very disappointed."

  • "We had a wonderful anniversary dinner at Autre Monde. Service was very friendly and welcoming. The cocktails were delicious. The food was about as good as it gets. I'm a big fan of the caldo verde. That broth was heavenly. Gimme a big bowl of the broth and a hunk of crusty bread and I'd be a happy man. We would not hesitate to return and plan on doing so soon."
