Diner Reviews
  • "Excellent dinner. Good chips and dip right away as we sat. Nice job on cocktails. Entrees were great. Had chicken taco special and steak taco special. Will definitely go back."

  • "Authentico is my go-to restaurant for celebrations & business meetings. It's a bit of a drive for me (I live in Wisconsin), but it's worth the trip every time. I have several food allergies, & am restricted to a diet of fresh fish, vegetables and no gluten. The mahi mahi tacos (w/ corn tortillas) are amazing. Even the accompaniments (the steamed rice and the black beans) are fresh, simple and perfect. The mango margaritas are a special treat. And if you come when the mariachi band is there, your night will be especially festive. (They serenaded me on my birthday!) My only complaint (a minor one) is that the corn tortilla chips are not fried in a dedicated gluten-free fryer, so some of us are unable to enjoy the amazing salsas and chips."

  • "We had a 7:15 reservation and they took us immediately. Food was great and atmosphere was fun. We were with Another couple and we were still able to talk."

  • "We recently dined at Authentico on a Saturday evening with friends. The staff went out of our way to make it a fabulous dining experience! Will definitely be back. Our server Dina (along with the rest of the staff) was exceptional, engaging and attentive but not intrusive."

  • "Very friendly and welcoming, however, we were disappointed with the food. We ordered the enchiladas Authentico, which is seafood enchiladas, and chicken enchiladas. Both had a sweet flavor to them. Not what I want when I'm eating enchiladas. Also, they were on the small size and didn't come with any lettuce or tomato on the side, as in other Mexican restaurants. It came with black beans and cilantro/lime rice. We ordered guacamole which was pretty flavorless. The chips don't seem to be homemade and are salted. I prefer non-salted chips. Mexican food usually has enough salt in it that you don't need the extra salt and if they make their chips they have enough flavor without the salt. We won't go back."

  • "This is the second time my husband and I ate at the restaurant. Just love the food bothe of us had tilPia and were crazy about the preparation.the only fault I found was it was incredibly noisy...a little hard to talk. However the food made it worth the visit."

  • "We very much enjoyed our dinner at Authentico this past weekend, including the couple that joined us that had never eaten at the restaurant. The menu is quite varied, with options for the carnivores and herbivores. Our dinners ranged from Tacos de Tinga, to Chile Rellenos, to Cheese Enchiladas to my order of the special chicken tacos of the evening. Plenty of food to go around. I loved the two salsas that come with the chips. The red sauce had a great kick to it. The noise level is normally pretty high. But, on this visit, we sat near the back where it seems to be a bit quieter. Service was friendly and helpful."

  • "Always friendly, neighborhood place. Definitely fills the need for family fare in Lake Forest that isn't just burgers, fries and wings."

  • "We went on a crowded Saturday night. The place was lively. The waitress took our drink orders and I knew as soon as I tried mine it was all wrong. I sent it back and it came back wrong again. Turned out she put in for a regular margarita instead of the mango one I ordered! Even when the mango one came, very little mango flavor! You would think they would have taken it off the check. Then when our food came they gave me the wrong food order as well. I guess this time it was the buss boy's error. My chicken taco's came out momentarily. Have to say my taco's were excellent as well as my husband's mahi mahi taco's. We just wish the service would have been better."

  • "My husband and I went here for Valentines Day dinner. The food was fabulous with a wonderful presentation. I loved the incredible variety of gluten-free options available listed right on the main menu. We had a wonderful time, even though we may have had the only bad seat in the restaurant...inches away from the kitchen door which made my broad-shouldered husband a little uncomfortable. Despite the seating arrangement, we will definitely try this restaurant again for the wonderful authentic food!"

  • "Authentico in Lake Forest, Illinois is a great little place! The salsas are fresh, the chips always pack the perfect crunch! I ordered the cerviche appetizer, and my table had to order two more orders, it was so delicious.. We also had the mussels with chorizo sausage, what an interesting combo… As usual, Authenico did not disappoint! We are locals, and we had friends from outside our town meet us~they were very pleased! Not your "average" mexican neighborhood restaurant. Oh, and how can I forget the "North Shore" margarita? Dangeroulsy delish."

  • "We started out just fine with Guamcamole and drinks. The ladies ordered seafood enchiladas and I ordered the Wahoo special recommended by the waitress. When the food came our they brought fish tacos for the ladies by mistake and the dries piece of fish in an unimaginative sauce. The seafood enchiladas arrived about ten minutes later with apologies from the waitress. All they did was not charge us for the fish tacos which we did not order and charged us for a more expensive white wine than we had. I dined there two or three times earlier as it is convenient but it is always a bit disappointing and I doubt I will return for dining. Maybe just the guacamole."

  • "Last time we tried this restaurant it was right after they opened. I have to say everything has improved 100%. Amongst us we had chicken enchiladas with verde sauce, beef enchilada with red sauce, diablo shrimp, and fish tacos. All was excellent. But most of all the black beans were FANTASTIC! I took a container home and had them for lunch the following day. Also, I'm not a rice eater, but their rice is heavenly. Very light and flavorful. We were there on a Tuesday night when it was 5 degrees so it was a bit slow. I imagine with the restaurant filled it would be a rather loud environment."

  • "Who would guess that you could find good Mexican cuisine in stodgy Lake Forest! But you can! We really enjoyed our meal. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. We love the free chips that come with the meal. They are very light and crispy. Thank you for holding our reservation when we ended up being 20 minutes late. We greatly appreciated your flexibility. We will be back!"

  • "We were seated promptly. Service was excellent from drinks to starters to the main course. My wife had a margarita which was really quite good, and I am not a huge fan of the drink. Food quality was very good. My wife had a shrimp dish from the standard menu which she thought was excellent. I had the ribs with chipotle sauce from the specials. Taste and quality of the rib was very good. It had too much sauce for me but I am a big fan of dry rub ribs, so that may explain that. The sides that came with mine were excellent. A bowl of beans with some cheese that were delicious and a bowl of unique but very tasty slaw. This is a casual neighborhood place that delivers a very decent meal at a good price."

  • "Went out on a cold snowing night and walked into a warm cozy place, booming on a Saturday night. The skinny Margarita won me over. I am a clean food eater and there were many choices for me to have. I ordered the fish taco's , fresh and full of flavor. Will be back for more."

  • "Authentico is a delightful restaurant. The food and service were outstanding, The ambiance was very nice with very nice design elements. If i had any suggestion at all, it would be to turn the music down a bit.. It was a bit to loud and slightly distracting to being able to visit with friends. The food was outstanding if a bit pricey but I felt it was worth the extra. The service was also outstanding with friendly, efficient wait staff who appeared to be very engaged in making everyone's experience nice. All in all I would definitely recommend this restaurant to others and look forward to going back myself."

  • "Really good blend of authentic Mexican food with a little extra pizazz. Service very attention and happy to help cater to a young child. Food came out a little fast, but would appreciate that on most nights. Can't wait to go bck."

  • "I was expecting real Mexican food and I was disappointed. I felt it was more of a Qdoba type food. Margarita was disappointing too!"

  • "We had a group of 9 and the staff worked hard to find the right spot for us. The food was excellent overall, but there were a few mixed reviews primarily due to temperature. They may have been a little overwhelmed in the kitchen, and keeping up with all the empty plates was a challenge. Fish tacos hit the spot."

  • "We visited Authentico for the first time being referred by a friend. We went early (5:30) since it was a Saturday night. The families were flowing in continuously.. We liked sitting near the window at a high boy table as it was just the two of us. Found it to be quieter and a bit more intimate. Our waiter, Matt, couldn't have been better. He was energetic, friendly, and really showed his emotion when describing the dishes. Exactly how a good waiter should be. When we go back, we will bring friends and ask for Matt. Our food was fresh, hot and thoroughly enjoyable."

  • "Well it was, All I can say is the staff and ownership really take pride in everything they do. The table salsa was great, and the service from all staff was great! Seafood, Steak, even appetizers were well prepared and can out hot except for too many kids on "date night" what a great place, (PS: I have 5 kids , get a babysitter adn save us all)"

  • "There must be something good on the menu, since the place was packed on a Wed night. Our food was well prepared but not good at all. Being from Texas and a constant mexican food diner, I can honestly say that the chips and salsa were the worst I've ever eaten. Cardboard chips with Campbell Tomato Soup."

  • "very tasty. We had a very good and informative waiter. He helped us to choose wisely. :) Everyone loved their choices. They take a basic Mexican meal and give it a twist. i.e. lemon rice, black beans, beef tenderloin fajitas. All very very good."

  • "We brought our kids here on a Saturday night. Our reservation was for 6:45 and already the place was quite lively. Service was very attentive with a pronto presentation of water, chips and two salsa selections (all tasty). We ordered quac to accompany our chips and I think this was the sign of things to come as it mostly tasted of salt and lacked the usual lime, garlic deliciousness. Enter tortilla soup, a family favorite - also very salty. We pushed on... I ordered the shredded pork carnitas and my hubs the beef tenderloin tacos. Again, beautiful presentation, fresh and attractive ingredients but all we could taste was the salt. Disappointing to be sure. Thankfully, the Authentico margarita saved the evening for us."

  • "The food was under seasoned. Guacamole and empanadas, bland. My scallops were sitting in a plate of water and my boyfriends carne asada was tender but bland. Won't be back."
