Aurea combines the hotel’s historic roots with modern touches that evoke the effervescent character of San Francisco -- from avant-garde seating arrangements, Aurea features an illuminated wine-centric bar that operates as a classic coffee-bar café by day and transitions in the evening into a lively restaurant lounge where guests can enjoy Aurea’s menu of small plates celebrating Bay Area and California culinary artisans. Aurea offers tiered seating for up to 130 guests, including versatile, work-or-play private spaces known as “cocktail cubbies” that can be connected as work areas or serve as intimate dining nooks, as well as expansive communal tables and an al fresco dining area in the courtyard. Chef Michael’s menu is anchored in seasonality with an emphasis on supporting the Northern California farming communities.     I thought this was a restaurant in a fine hotel at Nob Hill SF. It turned out to be a quick snack place with limited but excellent food. Service was excellent. Staff was extremely friendly and maitre de (Martin- sp?) was top notch. Thank you

    Admittedly a bit of an odd space - a small, curtained off area on the side of the bar - Aurea nonetheless does a very nice job. I was eating alone on a business trip and the staff were welcoming. Started with a beet hazelnut and prosciutto salad - very good. Salmon with lentils for main course also beautifully done. A good list of wines by the glass to accompany it. San Francisco has lots of options, but this fits the bill nicely.

    Although this is in a Hotel the service and food would make many of SF's better restaurants be put to shame. The Maitre D was wonderful, extremely friendly and the waiter was both knowledgable and sincere. Portions were very generous and the Ribeye was cooked perfectly. A real welcome surprise and a real tribute to the hotel. Just wish they had its own entrance so you would not feel like your dining in a Hotel bar. Great comfy seats too. If your staying at the Stanford I would recommend this against many other restaurants in the area.

    We had an excellent Christmas Eve dinner - the roast goose was cooked to perfection (but not overcooked). Service was personable, timely but not at all rushed. We enjoyed our primary server and the others who contributed in serving us. Liked the table for two with high wingback chairs - made us feel special. Worth a return visit.

    This is actually a bar not a restaurant. They have a little side area set up as a restaurant, but it is the walk through for the Hotel. The service was lousy, I had to get up twice to ask for service. The food was over cooked and too salty. There were 5 of us and none of the dishes were good.

    I ate at Aurea while on a business trip and was eating alone. The waiter and maitre d' were very welcoming and pleasant, which is not always the case when a middle-aged woman is dining alone. The food was very good, and the wine list was relatively small but had some interesting selections- not just the usual popular chardonnays. A very nice experience, and I would go there again.

    The jazz band was excellent--very interactive and friendly, but also talented. We had appetizers and desserts--both very satisfying. Parking was easier than I expected--and validation was a welcome surprise.

    The food and service were excellent. My one reservation is the atmosphere. The restaurant is in a fine old San Francisco hotel that has been renovated to feel like it could be in any city. It is fancy and cold.

    Came for Dining Out For Life event. Was very impressed with the food. It was AMAZING! My party all ate everything on our plates. Drinks were perfect as well, not too strong or weak. It did take a bit for us to put our order in but aside from that, I would absolutely return for dinner here

    Brunch at Aurea is fantastic. The choices are eclectic homey and delicious all at tthe same time. If shrimp and grits are on the menu when you go, look no further! The prawns are perfectly paired with the savory buttery grits- I was sad when it was over, although the serving was more than generous. My dining partners had the pulled pork sandwich, a beautiful vegan lasagna and poached eggs on salmon hash-- all great. The service was excellent. Cannot say enough about how good this place is. Stanford court guests are lucky to stay and eat here. We locals are lucky to be able to go any time!

    My bf and I went here on a Saturday for lunch and it was not crowded at all, there were only 2 other groups dining. The decor is very chic and neat. The ambiance is romantic in that sense, not that the place is dark and has "mood lighting" it is well lit, from natural lighting. The restaurant seems to be an extension of the lounge, but when you see the bar, then u know you're in the dining area. We sat at a cute table with blue high leather back chairs, not far from the bar. I had a turkey and bacon club sandwich which came w home made chips. The bf had a burger with fries.     A little stuffy. They placed every man wearing suits or sport coats in this one room that was off to one side. We had our reservations far in advance, yet had a two top at the edge of that room of suits. Those that were more relaxed dress were in the main dining room and looked like they were having a more relaxed time. The dress code said they required jackets, I guess they made exceptions to the rules. If a place requires a sport coat, then they should require it, one family that the boys looked sloppy, they put them at the nicest booth in the restaurant. So, the moral is, don't adhere to the rules and you will get better seating. Hmmmmm!

    the service was awesome. Ramon was our waiter and explained everything and was just so genuine and nice. i had the california cheese plate and hubby had the club sandwich. we were both so stuffed that we couldn't have dessert.

    Everything on the menu sounded delicious, but nothing was. I think it tried too hard and didn't cover the basics of using good ingredients, treating them well, and letting them speak for themselves. It was also considerably higher priced than we anticipated. Their profile suggested $$, but there was not one entre under $20. We live about a block away, so we wanted to try it. Now we know the only reason to go is if you are staying at the hotel and don't want to leave the building.

    Far from a satisfactory replacement for Fournou's Ovens, which was in its own private space a floor below. Aurea opens off the reception desk for the hotel, and suffers the fate of being a hotel dining room.

    This hotel lobby level restaurant is a hidden gem. It was a very quiet Friday evening, we had the whole dining area to ourselves! The three course tasting menu is a great value, reasonably priced with good size portions. Service was excellent and friendly.

    The service was excellent but the food was mediocre at best. The duck was tasteless and the crème brûlée was very poorly done. It was Christmas dinner and a true disappointment. There are too many good restaurants in San Francisco to waste your time and money here. I would recommend that you go somewhere else.

    The food was very good. Overall, the service was marginal. Our reservation was for 1 PM. Intially, the waiter was attentive, then his service became overly attentive and rushed. We thought what is going on? It became clear when we were mid-way through our entree, at 1:50 PM, and he asked if we could order our desert as the kitchen closed at 2 PM. This was meant to be a relaxed lunch. The bill was presented with the desert. We relaxed with our coffee, without seeing the waiter again, leaving the restaurant at 2:30 PM. Don't go here if you want a relaxed lunch.

    Food and service - outstanding. Attentive without being overbearing. I was treated like a guest and not a customer. I ordered two small plates expecting smaller portions than I received. The crab/shrimp cakes were fabulous, served with fresh quacamole and a peach salad. It was a surprising combo but worked together beautifully. Next I had the dayboat scallops. They were pan seared and served on top of a lovely corn risotto. Unless you are very hungry or are with a few people, you only need one small plate. I would definitley go back next time I am in town.

    An improvement from when I was here several months ago. Maitre D' was very attentive and greeted us warmly. Server was equally as attentive. Food quality was excellent however I'd like a little more variety and additions to the menu. Overall a good gastronomic experience.

    What a pleasant surprise this turned out to be after a late-adjourning alumni event across the street. The food was fine--the salmon was especially good--and the wine list surprising. It appears not many non-hotel guests try Aurea because the place was empty, but it's worth remembering if you're in the area and hard pressed to find a nice table nearby.

    There was no host or hostess. I asked several staff members if I could seat myself or if I needed to wait to be seated and they all told me they would get someone to help me. It was not crowded at all but when I was seated, I was offered the two worst tables in the place. Really disappointing service.
