A word from Atwood
Atwood is an intimate, romantic, must dine Chicago classic restaurant adjacent to the world famous Burnham Hotel. (An Al Capone hangout) This is one of Chicago's most historical buildings located in the heart of Chicago's Central Business District. Only blocks away from Architectural river boat tours and directly along the State Street retail shopping circuit and the many Art’s of the theater district. Enjoy fresh, locally farmed ingredients while dining in our vibrant, must see, dining room. Chef Derek Simcik and our attentive staff offer excellent service, “contemporary” American comfort food in a memorable setting. Atwood is a Chicago staple, casual restaurant in the heart of the Loop, featuring a creative twist on what, in one time, was referred to as American comfort food.

  • "As visitors to Chicago we booked this restaurant based on Open Table ratings and the notations that this was a romantic spot. We simply didn't see the attraction. Located in a hotel lobby, with little privacy, poor service, and only average food, this was not what we expected. On a special night it was very much a let-down."

  • "This was our second visit to the Atwood Cafe, the first with their new chef. The food was perfect: a delightful watermelon/tomato salad, shrimp fettuccine, and espresso-rubbed rib eye. The odd part--at 8 on a Saturday, the place was empty (last time it was packed). The kitchen was closing early to handle routine maintenance. Strange timing. Our server must not have had enough to do, because she wanted to chat each time she passed the table. Then she started interrupting us mid-sentence. I finally asked her to leave us alone to talk. The manager immediately brought our check, although we were still eating, and tried to take our plates, as did as did the bus staff, repeatedly. Food was great, but service was a bit bizarre."

  • "I've been going here for years and was eager to take my out-of-town friends there. It was very good, as usual, except for the service. Our waiters changed mid-meal, with the explanation that our first waiter had to leave. He, however, remained there waiting on the table next to ours the entire evening. It was odd. Also, it felt as if they were eager for us to leave . . . that was subtle, but the feeling was there, nevertheless."

  • "Brunch options are pretty varied and quite tasty but you should not be in a hurry. Although the restaurant wasn't very crowded, it took quite a while to get answers from the waitress. If you're not in a hurry, quite nice since it leaves you plenty of time to chat with friends."

  • "Our server, Mary, was beyond amazing. The corn chowder was layered with flavors (I could just eat that over and over again). My husband's salmon was to die for. Perfectly cooked and flavored exceptionally well. My trout was underseasoned and the orzo was too salty. When eaten together, it was perfection. But if you eat them seperately, it was not enjoyable. We will definately come back here."

  • "With so many new restaurants opening (and closing) this is one we always find ourselves going back to, knowing the food and ambiance are consistently outstanding. There was a period, though, where we weren't so sure we were their target market - when they changed their menu to small plates only. On our last visit, we were so glad to discover they are once again offering the option of a main course."

  • "I have had lunch here several times over the years but this time the entrees were not so great. The poutine appetizer was delicious,but the mussels were unusually tiny and the turkey burger was mostly filler, not much turkey flavor at all. It came with a tomato coulis that amounted to a few cherry tomato skins. We decided we will try it again, but stick to appetizers and dessert!"

  • "The food was very good as well as the service. The monk fish I ordered was very good and my husband's pork chop was done quite well (not dry but not rare). The portions were big enough that you don't need to add sides. We didn't know that and ordered a side each and couldn't finish them. The mac and cheese side was too much cheese and not enough mac but it was tasty. The staff was attentive and it was a quiet sort of romantic room which made our date more enjoyable."

  • "Atwood was a last minute decision that we found on Open Table. Had never heard of it and decided to try. The waiter was outstanding, explained everything very well, offered suggestions, talked to us about the building and the history. He knew a lot about the wine list and helped me make a good choice with that as well. It was our first trip to Chicago, and this was a great find. The food was great, I had the vegetable gratin and my husband had fish. Delicious. We highly recommend Atwood!"

  • "The good note of the evening was the charred octopus and house chorizo wow what flavor, though charred worried me. The main course sole cooked in paper was swimming and there was so,little fish that it was embarrassing for the price. Food cost here couldn't have been more than 3 %. They kindly offered and I accepted a substuite the trout again farm raised makes me wonder about the quality of everything coming from the kitchen. First bad meal in Chicago and I come here lots"

  • "Very seasonal food selection and unique items to chose from. We tried the "pickles" as an appetizer which was not your typical pickle. It was pickled green tomatoes and cantalope! Very unique taste.....two of the three of us enjoyed it the other did not like it at all. I had the Monkfish entre' and it thought it was great. Small portion but very good. Others had pork tenderloin which was also very good. Cheese selection was awesome as well. A bit cramped as it is smaller than I had anticipated and tables were very close together."

  • "It's been several years since I visited Atwood Cafe. I've regularly recommended it to people. This brunch was a disappointment. I ordered biscuits & gravy. The biscuits were hard & cold. There was about 1 tablespoon of absolutely tasteless gravy on each biscuit. There were 3 very thin slices of a tiny sausage (think about a pencil eraser and you get the idea in terms of size & taste.) They came with poached eggs which were perfectly cooked but tasted of vinegar, and a side of the most shriveled "fried" potatoes I've ever seen."

  • "To be very honest, we were quite disappointed. 3 of the 4 entrees were not up to par, one was undercooked and was sent back to the kitchen. An appetizer of calamari and scallops was devoid of scallops. A side dish was 1/2 the portion of the same side dish served to nearby tables, with an excuse that the kitchen ran out of serving dishes. For a total bill of over $300 it was nowhere up to the standard of our previous visits to the Attwood."

  • "We stopped by Atwood on a weeknight for a late meal after a film at the Gene Siskel Film Center, just a couple blocks away. Due to the hour, we chose a cluster of small plates and dessert. The charcuterie, in particular, was outstanding - ample and wonderfully diverse in its offerings - especially when paired with a baguette and the seasonal pickles. For dessert, we shared the lemon cake, which also surpassed our expectations. We found Atwood to be an unexpectedly good value for the money and plan to return the next time we are in the area."

  • "Food was good: Monkfish with polenta and tasty glazed carrots. Husband had trout and orzo. Cocktails are pricey; specifically I ordered a tommy margarita for $14. It was the smallest margarita I've had... not worth the $$ in my opinion. Waiter was courteous and attentive. Ambiance is okay, but this place is cramped. I could have easily rubbed elbows with the guy sitting at the table next to me. We had a 6:30 Atwood reservation with a 8:00 show at the Oriental. Serving of entrees was a little slow considering there were several empty tables. At 7:40, we had not received our check... had to summon the waiter to speed up so we could make the show on time."

  • "We enjoyed a great brunch at Atwood for 8 people (2 families of 4). They were gracious and accommodated our request for sitting near the light as opposed to the back. Freshly squeezed OJ was delicious. Parents enjoyed the egg white fritatta with spinach and goat cheese which came with a really lovely fruit bowl (not just melon but pineapple and lots of different berries). Only complaint would be that other than that frittata a lot of the other egg dishes don't come with any veggies/fruit - for example, the Arwood is just eggs, bacon, cheese, potatoes, toast. That's a lot of carbs! In retrospect we probably could have asked to switch out the potatoes for fruit. May next time. They generously let us chat for 45 min after the bill was paid."

  • "After enjoying a matinee performance of "Motown", we had an early dinner at Atwood, and again, we really enjoyed our meal. The beet salad is delicious, with thin raisin toasts accompanying the small dices of beets topped with a wonderful melted, creamy cheese. Our server was gracious, making nice recommendations throughout our dinner. We shared the chicken for our entree and requested a side of the orzo pasta, which tasted wonderful with the chicken and onions. Homemade lemon cake with blueberry compote left us very happy at the end of our meal. We saw many other items on the new menu that we will try in the future. A very enjoyable meal indeed!"

  • "The Atwood Cafe is a great place for good food and better ambiance. The restaurant is beautiful and still has that old Chicago style feeling (note the amazing ironwork near the elevators). I've been for brunch, lunch, and afternoon tea, and always have great service and food. In an area with not a whole lot of interesting dining choices, this is a solid place to go for a relaxing meal or to impress an out of town guest. Note - it is a bit pricey..."

  • "The Atwood is a stand by whenever we make a day trip downtown. The throwback style of the restaurant, unique seating, great food, and great not in your face stay long and linger service is a real joy. The menu isnt expansive, but it is very good. The coffee is strong. The bagels muffins eggs bacon etc are prepared just right. The staff lets us linger although I admit we arent ever there at a rush. Located not far from Art Institute and Grant Park/Millenium/Bean . A bit pricey but below average for downtown. I love it here and am very appreciative of how they treat my wife."
