Diner Reviews
  • "Food was unexciting. Beautiful surroundings and a hot corner location."

  • "Excellent food and service. Enjoyed the evening at Atwood. We went for Friday dinner after 7pm. The restaurant was very busy around 5-6:30pm with pre-theater crowd, but it was cozy, quiet, and romantic after 7pm. Highly recommended."

  • "We went to Atwood before a show at the Oriental Theater --- it was outstanding! Great food, fair prices, quick service. Will definitely be back!"

  • "Very close to the Ford Theatre. The food was excellent. Great decor and the service was very good. $$$ (glad my girl was treating, lol)."

  • "The food was very good. Service was slow to commence, but once started was very attentive."

  • "We completely enjoyed the ambiance, the food and the service. The starter cheese plate has a nice selection of cheese with great raisin bread. The entrees (steak and pork) were delicious and the dessert (cheesecake) satisfying. Looking forward to our next visit."

  • "We came to Atwood with family after getting married at City Hall and it was the perfect place to celebrate. We ended up coming an hour earlier than expected and they accommodated us with no problems. Service was friendly and quick (but didn't feel rushed in any way), food and drink were delicious. We'll be back!"

  • "Our server Via was attentive, friendly, recommendations were perfect for us and made our evening enjoyable. And most of all kept us on schedule so we could get to our play on time."

  • "The space is beautiful. I love the Atwood for that. But, not having been there is a long time I was surprised by the heavy emphasis on pork. I am a non-meat eater. I ordered the veggie burger, which was large, but surprisingly made with LOTS of cheese. It was accompanied by crème fraiche, which I asked for on the side. I was surprised at how unhealthy it was. Overall, I felt that my options for healthy/non meat were limited."

  • "excellent for before theater as several are within easy walking distance. ."

  • "This one of a kind fine dining cafe is back on top of the Loop lunch scene after having gone through a few years of the bacon-lard-cream obsession of a previous chef. Still beautiful and now revitalized with the creative energies of skilful new chef. Bravo!"

  • "Living in Tennessee again after leaving Central Illinois and missing the train trip to Chicago, I was able to return to Chicago and ride the train from Lincoln with a girlfriend and dine at my favorite Atwood Cafe. Great food, wonderful service, fabulous views, super place to people watch and to be watched. The lovely hostess is a sweetheart. The only sad part was my waiter for years has moved on. Not to worry. The young man who waited on us was terrific. I only wish I lived closer. Thanks for a heart-warming lunch on a beautiful day in your wonderful city. Hope to return for another lunch soon......"

  • "The food and service were very good, but the noise level is a problem. My guest and I had trouble hearing each other from across a small table, which detracts from the food, service and setting. This is common in many "loop" restaurants (think Townhouse and 1 N Kitchen). I've noticed many NYC restaurants put sound-absorbing materials on the bottom of tables, which helps restaurants with hardwood floors and high ceilings. Food - The turkey burger has a creative mix of spice making it very flavorful with an almost meatloaf consistency. Service - extremely professional and attentive."

  • "Have been hearing how wonderful this place is for some time. Feel it is overrated. Best thng is its location, and the dining room is nice but cramped. Menu very limited, price of drinks way too high. Snooty waiter. Would not return, lots better places in downtown Chicago."

  • "Beautiful room, and the food typically is excellent."

  • "Tucked on one of the busiest corners of the city, this little restaurant takes you back in time. Lovely ambiance with a delicious variety of menu items make it perfect for after shopping, before theater or just a nice dinner."

  • "Always love dining here before a night at the theatre, but disappointed by the new menu and step up in pricing."

  • "We have always loved Atwood and each time we go there it is perfect - food, ambience and service. Consistently great and inventive."

  • "Love the atwood for ambiance, service, and -- usually -- extraordinary food. This time was no exception, with one small exception. We ordered brunch, everything was stellar (don't miss the homemade donuts and jam!), but the hash brown potatoes were truly subpar. They had very little flavor and were little more than skillet-fried cubed potatoes with a bit of onion and red pepper. I would expect more from a place that puts such ingenious and delectable items on the menu as a Southwestern Benedict comprised of BBQ pulled pork over cornbread. Luckily that one, along with the other main dishes, were extraordinary with no exception."

  • "We had a wonderful breakfast for our first time visit!"

  • "Good food in an elegant, historic location. Attentive wait people and friendly staff."
    Dined on 7/3/2014
  • "Still an elegant spot in the heart of the Loop, but the lustre of the menu has faded .... A colleague and I met for lunch ... she ordered a frisee salad with chicken that was absolutely paltry by any measure. My lobster pot pie was topped with a light flaky crust that promptly turns to mush in the rich but rather unremarkable lobster cream. Sandwiches and burgers appeared from a distance to be a far better bet there, but for the price you might as well go to the Michelin-rated NAHA. Not my first time dining there by a long stretch...maybe not my last, but not my first choice anymore..."

  • "Atwood has a great intimate atmosphere in an historic Chicago building in the Loop. Convenient for the theater crowd or just an intimate dinner. The wait staff are attentive and knowledgable. The cocktail and wine list have great choices. The menu is limited but whatever you select is good. I would be surprised to see it reviewed on "check please"."

  • "The menu had several food embellishment words that were unknown. Had to ask many questions of the waiter to know what a particular dish included."
    Dined on 6/30/2014
  • "Love the little snuggly chair. Love the rabbit sausage and the scallops. Cod balls were bland. Needed more cod fish taste. Wine good. Service very attentive."

  • "the location is perfect for dinning after the theater. the menu seems sparse and difficult to understand. the food was good but not worth the price. portions small."
    Dined on 6/29/2014
  • "We were expecting lunch at 12:30, not brunch, but no worries--the brunch was delicious! Gracious setting."
    Dined on 6/29/2014
  • "The space is fabulous. The service was friendly and the food was OK. Worth going to for the renovated interior space, one of the first repurposed public buildings turned into a hotel and restaurant."
    Dined on 6/28/2014
  • "Food is superb - a clear level up from the past (although it was always good). Rabbit sausage and chicken liver mousse small plates were excellent, as was the grilled pork loin entree and Brussels sprouts/ bacon side. A solid wine list. The caramel cheese cake was also excellent. Excited to go back"

  • "We really made a great choice with this restaurant. We were staying at a near by hotel, and did not feel that adventurous , so this was close by with good reviews, loved the decor; warm & comfortable with large windows & a corner location so lots of outside views. The quaint Burnham Hotel is in the building & together they cover the footprint in a very Historic local. We both had salads and different fish entry's . The food was perfectly cooked and very well presented. The service was friendly, and warm, and the staff all worked well together. This is a treat!."

  • "The Burnham is my usual stay in downtown Chicago, and I usually have at least one dinner at Atwood during each stay. The kitchen has enough talent, originality and attitude (without arrogance) to be taken seriously. Within the Burnham's compact lobby space, Atwood carves out a zone of casual intimacy. Service cheerful, capable and without undue self-conscious intrusion. This time, our server Mary hit just the right note of cordiality and expertise. Menu sufficiently expansive, but I wouldn't mind a couple of lighter options."

  • "The food was superb. Although we arrived 10 minutes late, we were able to make our theater reservations with time to spare. Service was great."
    Dined on 6/26/2014
  • "This is one of the few restaurants in the Loop that has good food, friendly service, isn't trendy and doesn't pack the tables so that you are forced to hear the conversations at the neighboring tables. If we happen to be in the Loop and want a bite to eat, even without a reservation, we will try to see if there is a table. We always suggest the Atwood if someone asks us a for a restaurant downtown."

  • "We had a small dinner party at Atwood to celebrate my daughter's graduation from college. The service was attentive and the ambience of the restaurant was perfect. We had a wonderful evening with good food, good wine and wonderful service. The entire staff had signed a congratulations card for my daughter. It was very sweet. Our server was wonderful!"

  • "Atwood's service was excellent. The wait staff was very attentive and the food was delicious. A great choice prior to attending the theatre!"
    Dined on 6/20/2014
  • "We were going to the theater, the Atwood is conveniently located, has a parking option. The portions were small and the food was acceptable, but the service was outstanding. The Atwood is a good choice when attending the loop theater options."

  • "Even after the restaurant filled up, we were able to converse without any noise interference. The service started out quite attentive and, of course, slid downhill as the restaurant filled up. We actually had some time to kill and for that reason my friend ordered dessert as we didn't want to take up the table without eating or drinking. When the bread pudding was presented it was not even warm (the waiter had assured us it would be). When we sent it back, we waited over 20 minutes for it to reappear (having to remind waiter twice), and by the time it did reappear, we now did NOT have any more time!! The very kind manager(?) gave us her card and told us the next time we are there dessert is on the house."

  • "We loved the ambience, the Bloody Maria , and the service. The breakfast burrito was great but the biscuits and gravy could have used more gravy. Definitely will try again."
